[00:02:31] And me, I am also 32 years old. Anyway, let's get into the fucking plot summary. God, I can't believe I'm 32.

[00:02:37] Nito Asami's grandfather has severe dementia. He spends a lot of time helping him, but in the meantime, he's being bullied pretty intensely at school.

[00:02:46] Nito's friend Yuyya tries standing up for him. He wants to be an MMA fighter and tries to get Nito to join him, but Nito doesn't like violence.

[00:02:55] Out in the hallway, Nito bumps into now Okiba, a girl with a snaggle tooth. You know that anime snaggle tooth?

[00:03:01] Yeah, I haven't seen a cute thing like that in a while.

[00:03:03] Oh, such a cute little snaggle tooth. Who's training to be a pro MMA fighter.

[00:03:08] Although Nito mostly notices she has glasses which, as is established a few pages earlier, is his type, David.

[00:03:16] I can't believe he was talking shit about ass men though. For the record, Shonen Flop is a pro ass, and we've, well actually we think all women are beautiful, but we are a pro ass podcast.

[00:03:25] We are a pro ass podcast.

[00:03:27] And as said by a very famous Japanese developer, Ass is hometown.

[00:03:31] Who said that?

[00:03:32] So it was from Senran Kagura.

[00:03:36] Oh, Senran Kagura, that makes sense.

[00:04:03] Whenever you were talking about Ninjas right there, I just thought of Real Ultimate Power. You remember that?

[00:04:12] But yes, I remember Real Ultimate where you can kill yourself by swallowing a Frisbee.

[00:04:16] Yeah, the version of Sepuku in Real Ultimate Power is you take a Frisbee, you fold it up like five times and then put it in your mouth.

[00:04:26] Oh man, but I just know that Ninjas like to flip out and kill people.

[00:04:30] Not at all.

[00:04:32] That day, Nito goes home to his grandpa who has been training him in martial arts for years.

[00:04:37] Wow, that's a coincidental.

[00:04:39] He used to be a renowned fighter and training is the only time that he's lucid.

[00:04:43] Nito's sister, Rei, sees a sheet from school where Nito wrote that he wants to be a nurse in order to take care of his grandfather.

[00:04:50] Aw.

[00:04:51] Yeah, it turns out that Nito fused his grandfather's dementia as his fault because after his father died, he refused to train with him anymore,

[00:04:59] which coincided with his grandfather's decline, Popcorn David.

[00:05:03] Later on the train, Nito is getting bullied again, but Okiba films it and throws a kick,

[00:05:07] which Nito intercepts in the name of de-escalation.

[00:05:09] Okiba and Yuya drag Nito to an MMA gym where they show him the basics

[00:05:13] and he messes up the training by accidentally punching Okiba in the face.

[00:05:16] Nito leaves to meet his grandpa for training when he's accosted by the bullies trying to get him to take Okiba's phone and delete the video.

[00:05:22] Okiba secretly watches from behind a wall so Nito goes sicko mode and takes them all out with martial arts.

[00:05:27] She jumps in to stop him from breaking a dude's arm, deletes the video,

[00:05:31] and tells him to get lost before she starts kicking their asses.

[00:05:33] Okiba excitedly tells Nito, he just did MMA.

[00:05:36] Whoa!

[00:05:37] And begs him to come spar with her, but he has to run home to see his grandpa.

[00:05:40] When he steps into the dojo, his grandpa immediately knows he got in a fight.

[00:05:44] He asks Nito if it felt good to crush his opponents.

[00:05:46] See them driven before you, and they hear the lamentation of the women.

[00:05:50] And Nito says yeah, kinda did actually.

[00:05:52] And that sicko mode line reminds me how they actually have like a breakdancing thing at Legoland,

[00:05:56] and I was really disappointed they don't call it Bricko Mode.

[00:05:58] That is true, that would be pretty good.

[00:06:01] Not gonna lie, Bricko Mode.

[00:06:03] No, Bricko Mode!

[00:06:05] Alright, so Jordan, what were your first impressions?

[00:06:10] This manga just starts with dementia.

[00:06:13] This manga is like going there.

[00:06:15] If I had to read a manga about someone's grandfather having a severe case of dementia being very plot relevant,

[00:06:21] I'd have two nickels which isn't a lot, but it is weird that within the span of a month it's happened twice.

[00:06:33] I was gonna say, I didn't remember that part of killing me.

[00:06:36] That might actually be a plot in killing me.

[00:06:41] Vampire Dementia.

[00:06:42] Yeah, oh my god. That's interesting.

[00:06:44] But I think it's interesting how this handles it.

[00:06:47] You know, I really like Nito as a character.

[00:06:50] He really cares about his grandpa.

[00:06:53] He's a likable guy.

[00:06:55] This is so interesting because it's so character driven in a way I wasn't expecting.

[00:06:59] Like the author front loads all of the character interactions which is kinda good, kinda bad,

[00:07:04] but I was not expecting it.

[00:07:06] Maybe this is why the series actually I think has a pretty substantial fan base.

[00:07:09] A lot of people are requesting to cover it.

[00:07:11] And I can see why so many people kind of fought the series with something special

[00:07:14] because this is not the typical approach you would see in an action or in a sports manga.

[00:07:19] No, I mean an MMA of course, like it kinda toes the line between like an action fighting manga and like and sports, you know?

[00:07:27] You know, it's cause it is like he's fighting but it is kind of a sport.

[00:07:32] I think it's interesting how his grandpa was just kind of training him in some kind of martial arts

[00:07:37] and like what's interesting is they foreshadow that a couple times.

[00:07:41] They show Nito like doing some actually kind of impressive things.

[00:07:46] Like when he first gets in the way of a fight between a bully and Yuya,

[00:07:51] you see a little drawing of him like putting his hand in front of the bully's fist

[00:07:57] like almost in like a blocking way.

[00:07:59] And then another moment when he bumps into Okiba,

[00:08:01] he does like this backwards somersault to land correctly

[00:08:05] and it was like, oh, like I knew at that moment, oh, he's been like training.

[00:08:10] It's like a karate kid thing where he's just, oh fuck karate kid, that's what we should do.

[00:08:14] That would have been funny though if like all the chores he was doing for his grandpa

[00:08:18] was actually training him.

[00:08:19] I mean it's a blatant rip off of the karate kid but fuck it, that's still a great idea.

[00:08:23] Yeah.

[00:08:24] Though my issue with this chapter is because it's a character,

[00:08:26] Frodikus in Front Loads of Promise is like why do I really care about these characters?

[00:08:30] And it's like I don't feel like I have a good solution

[00:08:32] but it's also like we're on page like 35 when they actually do any sort of MMA

[00:08:37] which is way past the length of a normal chapter

[00:08:39] and I guess I get that's a longer chapter

[00:08:41] but still I was kind of like when is the point of this series actually going to start?

[00:08:45] Because for the first 35 pages, it could have been about any topic.

[00:08:48] Yeah, that's fair.

[00:08:49] It did almost feel like yeah, we're reading this like harrowing and tragic story

[00:08:54] of a boy trying to take care of his grandfather

[00:08:57] and then hey man, let's start punching and kicking.

[00:09:00] Yeah, I did kind of think that was interesting.

[00:09:02] I did like how it did feel kind of gradual.

[00:09:04] Like you have Nito like constantly trying to avoid talking about MMA,

[00:09:10] being like interested in MMA and stuff like that.

[00:09:13] One of the things is like I felt like they were going to do a little bit more.

[00:09:17] I mean they probably will in this series like with Nito's like aversion to fighting.

[00:09:23] Yeah, where it's like there's like kind of a conflict there where he doesn't like fighting

[00:09:28] but also he likes fighting.

[00:09:29] Yeah, I mean that's the thing.

[00:09:31] I wonder if he will on ironically go like have a 12 we saw on a rate.

[00:09:34] He has like a sicko mode where he just sees red, you know.

[00:09:36] Yeah, but it is also like he's doing MMA and he acts like oh wow, that's interesting.

[00:09:42] And like dude, you've been trained in this like you really didn't notice.

[00:09:45] You didn't really put two and two together that you've been doing like this complicated martial arts for your whole life.

[00:09:52] Yeah, that was kind of weird where it was like your fault.

[00:09:54] Your grandpa has just directly trained you in MMA.

[00:09:57] Yeah.

[00:09:58] And it's like why are you acting like you don't you haven't it was like so weird to get suppressed.

[00:10:02] Like is it like memory loss supposed to be a theme of this because like he suppressed these memories and his grandpa has dementia.

[00:10:08] So it's kind of weird.

[00:10:09] Like I understand not thinking about the martial arts as MMA, but after you see MMA, I feel like you'd be like oh yeah,

[00:10:18] I've been trained in that.

[00:10:19] Yeah, I know that.

[00:10:20] I have such mixed feelings about this chapter because it does things very interestingly,

[00:10:24] but I don't know if the things that make it different.

[00:10:26] I'm really happy that it is.

[00:10:28] Jordan, I also want to talk to you about the art style.

[00:10:29] What did you think of the art?

[00:10:30] I actually really liked the art.

[00:10:31] I think it was done pretty well.

[00:10:33] I enjoyed the art.

[00:10:34] I just felt like I don't know something was missing and also something about keep us designed just something just feels weird about it.

[00:10:40] Maybe it's a thing.

[00:10:41] I don't know.

[00:10:42] It's just like when I was looking at her she just seemed she just seemed kind of strangely designed.

[00:10:45] I kind of agree.

[00:10:46] Like the Fang is strange.

[00:10:48] I really was not expecting it because the Fang is for those who don't know it's like this thing that shows.

[00:10:53] Up in anime sometimes it's like a cute little snaggle tooth for lack of a better word where it's just like it feels like it shouldn't be on a normal person.

[00:11:03] Yeah, it's kind of actually like do retry which has it's kind of a similar art style but do try was definitely drawn worse where it's like they had like these surrealistic elements but the art style was too realistic to make it not seem kind of clunky like I think if the art style was looser the Fang would seem so strange.

[00:11:19] This feels like if the do retry author was actually like good enough at anatomy sort of like when they are fighting like yeah no the anatomy and the construction of the grappling moves and stuff makes sense and you can understand what's going on which was a huge problem in do retry where it's just like this looks like shit.

[00:11:40] No, no this does not look like shit.

[00:11:42] This is like the good version of do retry.

[00:11:45] Yeah, this is the retry to do retry retry.

[00:11:48] This is the actual retry.

[00:11:50] God.

[00:11:51] I think though that overall I like the sense of character like I think it was clever that he said what his type was and then he saw her and it was like it kind of gave us like a short and it kind of shortcut his motivation of why he cares about the girl when he explicitly says she's his type.

[00:12:04] I did think it was funny where like when they're in the MMA dojo and she takes off her glasses he's like oh man she took off her glasses.

[00:12:11] Bummer dude.

[00:12:13] Thinking about the scene from Parks and Rec where Aji Plaza slaps Chris Pratt and she's like dude do you have a boner right now he's like yeah I think you do.

[00:12:21] She's like ew it locks the way forward.

[00:12:24] Oh god.

[00:12:25] He's like I only want you to beat me up while you're wearing your glasses.

[00:12:28] Basically yeah.

[00:12:29] Alright so Jordan would you read our 10 chapters of this?

[00:12:32] I would.

[00:12:33] I think the combination of MMA like you know as I said well constructed fighting and like we talk about does the author actually care about the sport they're talking about.

[00:12:44] I think this guy genuinely is interested in MMA and martial arts.

[00:12:47] I get that pretty heavily from this so I'm kind of interested to see where it goes and I think the combination of that with the discussion of dementia is like kind of interesting.

[00:12:58] It's always very cool or it's always very interesting when a Shonin jump manga actually takes role elements like again family since talks about COVID talks about bulimia talks about dementia and you can listen to that to see our thoughts but it was very interesting to actually hear real world topics discuss in the manga.

[00:13:14] Alright so Jordan what do you think is going to happen next and why don't I dive into my guesses because I see you're typing one of them says needle fights the guys so I figured that guess is not complete otherwise that is the easy.

[00:13:24] Well I just finished it in the middle.

[00:13:27] Yeah but at the time of my recording Jordan literally had one of his guests say need to need to fight the guy.

[00:13:33] So mine is need to getting more into MMA helps his grandpa get his mind back.

[00:13:38] There won't be any serious romantic subplots so I think it was just kind of a shortcut the offer took to get need to interested in her but it won't like turn into a romance and I think there's going to be a big tournament at the end but needle loses and for bonus points he will say he still loves MMA no matter what that is.

[00:13:54] So it's going to be like Rocky kind of where like he goes the distance but nah he loses.

[00:14:00] Yeah man that's why Rocky is Kino.

[00:15:24] He was like this guy was weak it was bullied in high school and then he got really strong and it helped him overcome that so I think that Nido is going to fight that guy.

[00:15:33] I think that there's going to be a time skip at the end where Nido is now a famous champion of MMA.

[00:15:39] Yeah, that sounds about right.

[00:15:40] And there will be a guy with a grudge against Nido's grandfather who he has to face.

[00:15:45] Is he gonna fight him or like his grandson?

[00:15:48] I'm going to leave it vague so that both are potential fucking coward.
