[00:00:09] Welcome to Shonen Flop Chibi, the first Suppressions mini episode where we talk

[00:00:13] But the first chapter of the series will be covering in depth next week with our guest, Trenton

[00:00:18] I'm Jordan and with me today as usual is my lovely co-host David, say hi David

[00:00:23] Hi David

[00:00:24] What series are we covering this week David?

[00:00:26] We are talking about Takamara Gahara

[00:00:28] Nope

[00:00:29] No?

[00:00:29] Oh, it's Takamagahara

[00:00:31] Sure, I've heard it both ways

[00:00:33] Maybe it's Takamagahara

[00:00:35] I don't know

[00:00:35] I don't know

[00:00:36] I use the Italian pronunciation, you know instead of the French

[00:00:39] Takamagahara

[00:00:40] Ah ma-

[00:00:42] In a fantasy world where everyone dares to be Italian

[00:00:45] Oh god

[00:00:46] Wait, and that author's name?

[00:00:48] Jordan?

[00:00:49] Shigeru Miyamoto

[00:00:50] Araki

[00:00:51] Oh yes

[00:00:52] Oh god, so Jordan why don't you actually tell us about this series?

[00:00:57] Alright, so this is Takamagahara by Kawaii Juzo

[00:01:02] So he sounds pretty cute David

[00:01:04] He was like Kawaii, ay ay ay

[00:01:06] This ran from July 9th 2012 to November 5th 2012

[00:01:12] I think shortly before the- before the end of the earth

[00:01:15] I can't believe we've been living in a simulation ever since

[00:01:18] I mean it kind of feels like that honestly

[00:01:20] But this went for 17 chapters and 2 volumes

[00:01:24] Yes it did

[00:01:26] Yeah, what an interesting first chapter

[00:01:28] Why don't we hear about it?

[00:01:29] Oh yes, alright

[00:01:31] Let's get into the fucking plot summary

[00:01:32] So I mean this series- first thing you gotta know

[00:01:35] Kamizawas are superpowers

[00:01:38] And people with those powers are called Takamagahara title drop

[00:01:42] And they like go to some kind of school

[00:01:44] Which like is not relevant in this chapter

[00:01:46] But it will most likely be relevant in the next one

[00:01:49] And it says that they fight those overcome by karma or something

[00:01:54] This series didn't really explain how its power system is in the first chapter?

[00:01:57] No

[00:01:57] And you just kind of forget about it for about 80% of this chapter

[00:02:00] Part of it is like- was that like mandated by Shounen Jump

[00:02:04] Where it's like no, you gotta let them know that like a power system's coming dude

[00:02:09] You gotta let them know

[00:02:10] Yeah

[00:02:11] Yamato Yamada was born into a family of super athletes

[00:02:16] Yet he longs to be a mangaka, just like me

[00:02:19] He has four brothers who are all super strong fighters

[00:02:23] And want him to stop making manga and start punching people

[00:02:29] Everyone at school wants him to do sports because of his family

[00:02:33] But he really just wants to be a fucking nerd

[00:02:36] And probably wants to listen to podcasts about manga as well

[00:02:41] He makes people read his manga

[00:02:43] But David it's so fucking bad that they almost die

[00:02:47] In PE that day they are playing baseball

[00:02:50] Yamato goes up to bat and knocks the ball through the cage

[00:02:55] Destroying his bat

[00:02:57] No one even knows what happens to the ball

[00:02:59] And gym class is over anyway

[00:03:01] So they all go back to class

[00:03:03] Real class I mean

[00:03:04] Unlike the fake class which is fucking gym class popcorn David

[00:03:08] Yamato then goes to a shrine to pray for success as a mangaka

[00:03:11] But only gets a message saying that today is the last day of his normal life

[00:03:15] On his way to school he finds a destroyed baseball

[00:03:17] Which he thinks may have been the one from earlier

[00:03:19] But quickly dismisses that because it would have been a world record home run

[00:03:23] Yamato and I love just it's just absolutely been destroyed by the friction

[00:03:26] Oh yeah, the cork is out

[00:03:28] He destroyed the bat when he hit it

[00:03:30] Yeah

[00:03:31] Yamato thinks he got a love letter

[00:03:32] But was actually a note issuing a challenge written by a delinquent

[00:03:35] With a huge pompadour and beautiful handwriting

[00:03:37] I love how he was like wait a minute

[00:03:39] But the handwriting was so beautiful the guy was like

[00:03:42] I studied calligraphy

[00:03:46] He and his gang want to take Yamato down

[00:03:48] In order to prove how tough they are

[00:03:49] Since he's one of the Yamada brothers

[00:03:51] Yamato then punches the guy with his right hand

[00:03:53] Sending him flying far into the sky

[00:03:55] It's like that scene from a Dora Rara

[00:03:57] Where the guy gets punched so hard all his clothes come off

[00:04:00] So fucking that's a great scene

[00:04:02] It's like a Jesse and James type thing

[00:04:04] You know, yeah

[00:04:05] There I go blasting off again

[00:04:08] Ayyy

[00:04:10] He then goes to the nurse wraps his right arm in a billion bandages

[00:04:13] And wonder what the fuck just happened

[00:04:15] Weenmile his creepy substitute teacher is like

[00:04:18] He has awakened

[00:04:21] Oh god

[00:04:22] Jordan I want to hear the awakening of your first impressions

[00:04:26] Wow, this was a chapter

[00:04:29] This series clearly does not take itself too seriously

[00:04:31] Oh it knows exactly what it is

[00:04:33] Which is good

[00:04:34] Do you consider this like kind of postmodernism

[00:04:36] Like this is clearly a commentary on the state of Shonen Jump manga at the time

[00:04:40] You think?

[00:04:41] So like this came out in 2012

[00:04:42] But I honestly would have if you told me this came out like 2002

[00:04:45] I would have believed it

[00:04:46] It just like this came out the same year as assassination classroom

[00:04:49] And it doesn't feel remotely like a series that is only 10 years old

[00:04:52] And I feel it's made like that on purpose

[00:04:54] Like it feels older?

[00:04:56] Yeah, this feels like

[00:04:57] Yeah

[00:04:57] I think it feels old because it's making fun of things

[00:05:00] That would have been played straight as tropes in the early 2000s

[00:05:02] Like think about Beachy

[00:05:03] And how that kind of its art style its presentation its power system

[00:05:06] And it just and I'm not saying this is a negative

[00:05:08] I just think it feels intentional like this author tried to make a manga

[00:05:11] That felt like it was 10 years older than it actually was

[00:05:13] I mean, here's the thing

[00:05:15] Postmodernism is the most frustrating thing to try and define in the entire world

[00:05:21] I wouldn't really call this postmodern

[00:05:23] Like you'd have to be so meta and comment on like the very medium itself

[00:05:30] As in I'm talking about like not even just like the tropes

[00:05:34] I mean like fucking the paper that it's printed on and shit like that

[00:05:39] Yeah

[00:05:40] I can't even go into what is postmodernism

[00:05:43] That's a whole other thing

[00:05:45] It's really about the dada you don't ism

[00:05:47] It kind of is honestly

[00:05:50] Oh God

[00:05:51] This series definitely does feel like it's commenting on something

[00:05:57] Yeah

[00:05:57] Because it just gets it out of the way

[00:06:00] Kind of where it's like we're five super strong brothers

[00:06:04] Oh, but one of our brothers doesn't want to be strong

[00:06:07] And I really like how they do the the family push-up

[00:06:11] Yeah

[00:06:12] They're just so wholesome, you know

[00:06:14] They're so wholesome

[00:06:15] Yeah

[00:06:16] Listener for context

[00:06:17] The big brother gets on the bottom

[00:06:19] The second oldest gets on top of him

[00:06:23] The next oldest gets on top of him

[00:06:25] And so on till they get to the youngest

[00:06:26] And then they all do push-ups

[00:06:28] It's pretty good

[00:06:29] I also think it's really funny how it's like Yamato is like

[00:06:32] I'm gonna win the Tezuka Award

[00:06:34] I'm gonna be like

[00:06:35] I'm gonna go to the moon

[00:06:37] And everyone's like this is like the worst fucking manga I've ever read

[00:06:41] Yeah

[00:06:41] He wants to be this way and he's legitimately terrible at it

[00:06:45] It just cracking up how bad they were at making manga

[00:06:49] So it's like he's a savant

[00:06:50] And it's just it's so interesting how he's so blatantly designed by Dustin to be like a shonen protagonist

[00:06:56] And he just wants to do what he actually wants to do but he has zero affinity for it

[00:07:00] Yeah

[00:07:01] And he is like single-minded about it too

[00:07:03] Yeah

[00:07:03] He does not want to be this person that his family and friends think that he should be

[00:07:09] And are probably like right about it

[00:07:11] Because he's fucking terrible at what he wants to do

[00:07:16] Yeah

[00:07:16] It just cracks me up

[00:07:18] Yeah, it's really good

[00:07:19] Ah poor guy

[00:07:20] Oh the poorest

[00:07:22] Poorest guy

[00:07:23] I also can't believe this got an official translation

[00:07:25] This just doesn't feel like something Viz would have had someone go back and translate

[00:07:30] I'd be curious

[00:07:30] I want to hear from Max to see how this got an official translation

[00:07:33] Because this is just straight on the Viz site

[00:07:34] This is an official ass manga

[00:07:36] Yeah

[00:07:36] Like in a fit as opposed to the fake manga that is unofficial

[00:07:41] Like what the fuck did I mean by that?

[00:07:43] What if for the cover it's him training

[00:07:46] I'm just making you wonder if it's like Mob Psycho

[00:07:48] But his family is the body improvement club

[00:07:51] Oh God

[00:07:51] Because that's literally what his brothers are is the body improvement club

[00:07:55] You're not wrong

[00:07:56] Well, that's another one to toss in

[00:07:57] We are also decided maybe doing a Scott Pilgrim parody

[00:08:00] But I don't know Jordan's thinking about it

[00:08:01] So we'll see what we could be none of these

[00:08:03] I'm thinking about it, you know

[00:08:06] This also this is like in my head

[00:08:08] Candid this is in the same universe as Cromartie High School

[00:08:10] It just has the exact same energy

[00:08:11] Where weird shit is going on and no one seems to really care

[00:08:14] Yeah, no Cromartie High School is fucking amazing

[00:08:17] And it's not super off

[00:08:19] I wouldn't describe it as exactly the same

[00:08:22] I feel like Cromartie is like so fucking out there

[00:08:26] And so ridiculous like like Cromartie is closer to postmodern than this series

[00:08:31] I think

[00:08:32] Yeah

[00:08:32] But I see where you go with that

[00:08:35] Like the high schoolers don't really feel like real characters

[00:08:40] They are very much like stand-ins

[00:08:43] Like for like stereotypes kind of

[00:08:46] Because the author is just kind of like don't worry about it

[00:08:48] Don't just they're not something you should really be thinking about

[00:08:51] Don't worry about it

[00:08:52] Also speaking of stand-ins

[00:08:54] This dude is like his own stand

[00:08:57] Yeah, he's got hermit purple

[00:08:59] Well, he does a stand rush

[00:09:00] He does

[00:09:01] On the bully dude. Yeah, doesn't he?

[00:09:03] I thought he just punches him once

[00:09:04] Oh, maybe he was one of his other brothers

[00:09:06] There's a lot of punching in this chapter

[00:09:08] No, his older brother goes fucking nuts on a punching bag

[00:09:12] Oh, okay. That was what it was

[00:09:13] Yeah

[00:09:14] My apologies

[00:09:15] I also love how like the youngest brother is like

[00:09:17] I took down a bully and became the king of the elementary school at third grade

[00:09:23] And he's just like tiny compared to all the other brothers

[00:09:26] It's pretty good

[00:09:27] We stan our short kings Jordan, you know that

[00:09:29] Yeah, or it's like his older brother's like

[00:09:32] How did Yamato turn out like this as a baby instead of a crib?

[00:09:36] I just made a pile of shonen jumps and rested him on that

[00:09:40] And then I read shonen jump to him

[00:09:43] How did he turn out this way?

[00:09:45] Exactly

[00:09:46] I like, indisputably if I really liked this chapter

[00:09:49] I was like are we gonna, this could be the first time we have two non-flops in a row

[00:09:52] I don't know, we'll see

[00:09:54] It's short as well so it doesn't seem like it has time to shit itself

[00:09:57] But hopefully this isn't a first chapter wonder where

[00:10:00] I guess it's a good migration into it is

[00:10:02] I would very much read another ten chapters of this

[00:10:04] How about you Jordan?

[00:10:05] I would too. I would

[00:10:06] God, this is just a fun chapter

[00:10:08] It was

[00:10:09] And then Jordan, what do you think will happen next?

[00:10:12] I think Yamato will have to show off his powers to the headmaster of that

[00:10:17] That school that was mentioned in like the first page

[00:10:21] He'll have to do this in a fight before he's let into the school

[00:10:25] I think the manga will become a series about high school students fighting monsters

[00:10:28] Who were consumed by karma or something or whatever they said

[00:10:32] And I think that Yamato has one of those glass cannon powers

[00:10:34] Where he can only use it once and then his arm gets all fucked up for a while

[00:10:38] Kind of like Deku

[00:10:39] How about you?

[00:10:40] I think those are good guesses

[00:10:41] Those are I'll be honest Jordan not to be political

[00:10:44] But I think your guesses were better than mine.

[00:10:45] Thank you.

[00:10:46] All right.

[00:10:46] Mine is I think Yamato will realize the stronger he gets the better he gets at manga

[00:10:51] So he has to embrace becoming more powerful to actually make manga.

[00:10:54] That's not terrible.

[00:10:55] I like that

[00:10:57] Because it keeps talking about how making manga seems to make his hands stronger

[00:11:00] I think he will have a female crush where it'll be like that scene where she actually thinks this manga is good

[00:11:05] And like that start, you know that kicks it all off

[00:11:07] And I think there will be a scene where he's fighting like a bad guy

[00:11:11] And he can't quite do it and his brothers who don't have power stepping in help him

[00:11:14] It's like that scene where it's like they all grab him by the legs and the monster couldn't

[00:11:17] But it's just enough to let him beat the bad guy, you know

[00:11:19] Yeah

[00:11:20] Yeah, his brothers are fucking family push-up time.

[00:11:24] I love his brothers.

[00:11:25] They're so good.

[00:11:26] Oh man, and then I love hearing power words Jordan.

[00:11:29] So what was yours?

[00:11:30] Bruh, because it's just like damn look at this crazy shit

[00:11:33] And also he's got brothers

[00:11:34] Remember that meme where it's like girls that say hi and girls that say bruh.

[00:11:37] No, yeah, it was like like there's an avatar one where he was like shit.

[00:11:41] What's the name of the waterbender Katara?

[00:11:43] Yeah, and Katara was girls that say hi and Azula was girls that say bruh.

[00:11:48] That was a good meme.

[00:11:49] But yeah mine was right.

[00:11:50] Yeah, he's just he's you know, he's just a righty and he likes to write bozinga.

[00:11:55] Hey pun.

[00:11:57] Oh, all right.

[00:11:58] All right.

[00:11:58] All right.

[00:11:58] I know that wasn't my best but you know what is our best is our community.

[00:12:01] So let's get into Q&A.

[00:12:03] I want to thank everyone who submits their questions on the discord.

[00:12:06] Thank you so much.

[00:12:06] You can find a link to it in the show notes or on our site ShonaFlop.com

[00:12:10] starting with a Spooky Skelly.

[00:12:12] What is your favorite cliche?

[00:12:13] Why and what story uses it the best?

[00:12:16] David, I love manga that's just like really find it enjoyable when it's

[00:12:22] like, oh this is like super powerful manliness and burning like passion.

[00:12:28] And so she Gundam.

[00:12:30] Yes, she Gundam.

[00:12:30] I love she Gundam so much.

[00:12:35] I love it.

[00:12:37] I have to do my yearly rewatch of it actually.

[00:12:40] Oh God, I have a deal now or whenever I lose a pound I get to show

[00:12:43] Rachel a new anime.

[00:12:44] So maybe put that on the list.

[00:12:46] I got so excited when I was watching Gurn Lagun in theaters.

[00:12:50] Yeah, no spoilers, but people know where a certain character says

[00:12:54] leave it to me and that scene happens man.

[00:12:56] That's so awesome.

[00:12:57] I don't know how to describe it.

[00:12:58] I just love the cliche when people have like a teammate that's like

[00:13:00] kind of like really uncontrollable, but he's on their side and they

[00:13:02] go and you just see him like wrecking ass and they go.

[00:13:04] I'm glad he's on our side wild card like when the Hulk does

[00:13:09] shit in the Avengers movies.

[00:13:10] Yeah, I love that cliche.

[00:13:11] That's also the like the old man who's super powerful.

[00:13:14] Yeah, you know, like literally Master Asia and she cut the

[00:13:18] he's so good like silvers in one piece.

[00:13:21] Yeah.

[00:13:21] All right next up from Dude Rocks.

[00:13:23] If you got a billion dollars, what would you do?

[00:13:25] You know what?

[00:13:26] I would buy a three-bedroom house in New York City that would

[00:13:29] take about the majority of the billion dollars, but man,

[00:13:31] that'd be great to have an office.

[00:13:33] You know you ever see office space David nothing.

[00:13:36] Oh, not two chicks at the same time.

[00:13:39] Do you chicks at the same time?

[00:13:41] No, I don't know.

[00:13:42] I would I never worry about money again and I'd kind

[00:13:45] of just probably do art more and yeah, that's a huge

[00:13:50] improvement in my life right there.

[00:13:52] Just not having to worry.

[00:13:54] Oh, that does sound nice.

[00:13:55] Be really nice.

[00:13:56] Yeah, I think you only need about seven million dollars

[00:13:59] in liquid to never work again.

[00:14:00] If that's if my if I recall, oh, that's it.

[00:14:02] Yeah.

[00:14:03] Oh cool.

[00:14:03] I'll just do that.

[00:14:04] Yeah.

[00:14:04] Yeah, it's super easy and then you just pay yourself

[00:14:06] like a $200,000 your salary for the rest of your life

[00:14:09] off the interest.

[00:14:09] Yeah.

[00:14:10] Yeah.

[00:14:10] Yeah.

[00:14:11] Oh man.

[00:14:12] All right next up from Ozzy Rat best gift ever given

[00:14:14] best gift received.

[00:14:16] I don't know what like the best gift I've ever given

[00:14:19] is I've been doing a lot of drawings recently as presents

[00:14:24] and then I spend too much time on them and miss the

[00:14:26] birthday.

[00:14:27] Yeah, four months later, but like I'm excited to get

[00:14:30] mine from you.

[00:14:31] Yeah, I drew David something and it's been like

[00:14:34] months, but I will send it to him at some point

[00:14:37] that some point I also drew my nephew's favorite

[00:14:42] baseball player and I missed his birthday by almost

[00:14:45] a month because I'm a fucking perfectionist and

[00:14:48] it's really difficult for me to just send it to

[00:14:50] him when it's like oh yeah, it's like half

[00:14:52] done.

[00:14:52] You know what I mean?

[00:14:53] Like no, it's it is painful for me to do that.

[00:14:57] So yeah, I got to send that to him soon, but I think

[00:15:00] the best gift I've received last year for my birthday

[00:15:04] Steph gave me a special Pikachu edition Game Boy

[00:15:10] color, which was the exact same Game Boy color

[00:15:13] I had as a little kid.

[00:15:14] Oh, it was just like I was just kind of like

[00:15:18] blown away by it and I still look at it and I

[00:15:20] smile.

[00:15:21] That's really cute.

[00:15:22] Yeah, how about you David?

[00:15:23] So mine is both of these unsurprisingly in fall

[00:15:26] of Rachel.

[00:15:26] The best gift I ever got was my little puppuccino

[00:15:30] ravioli the Goblin.

[00:15:31] She was my birthday gift last year and then my

[00:15:33] best gift I would assume is when I gave Rachel

[00:15:35] an engagement ring so that she would marry me

[00:15:37] and guess what she said.

[00:15:39] Yes, she did.

[00:15:41] Whoa.

[00:15:41] Oh my God shocker.

[00:15:43] My wife said yes.

[00:15:44] Oh my God.

[00:15:46] All right next up from T Wolfwood who's

[00:15:48] listening in right now.

[00:15:48] Hi T Wolfwood.

[00:15:49] Hey T Wolfwood.

[00:15:50] Would you rather have crab stuffed mushrooms

[00:15:52] or a salt and vinegar chicken sandwich?

[00:15:54] I do not eat crab because I don't eat seafood.

[00:15:58] So I could definitely do the salt and vinegar

[00:16:00] chicken sandwich, which doesn't sound that

[00:16:01] bad.

[00:16:01] I mean that sounds like a nice like way

[00:16:03] you could make like a fried chicken sandwich.

[00:16:05] So I actually I probably pretty openly eat

[00:16:07] that.

[00:16:08] Are these supposed to be disgusting?

[00:16:10] I don't think so.

[00:16:10] These are very normal ingredients.

[00:16:12] Crab stuffed mushroom sounds pretty good.

[00:16:15] Actually, I don't know maybe maybe maybe

[00:16:18] I'm wrong.

[00:16:19] Maybe it's like T Wolfwood has had these

[00:16:21] and they're disgusting but like, I don't know.

[00:16:24] I kind of feel like I'd be fine with either

[00:16:27] like salt and vinegar chicken sandwich

[00:16:30] sounds totally fine.

[00:16:32] But like yeah, I'm interested in that crab

[00:16:34] stuffed mushroom.

[00:16:35] It's like those memes where it's like hey

[00:16:37] would you poop in a toilet for six trillion

[00:16:39] dollars?

[00:16:42] T Wolfwood has mentioned though that they are

[00:16:44] both good.

[00:16:44] So it wasn't supposed to be like a would

[00:16:46] you rather?

[00:16:46] Okay.

[00:16:47] All right.

[00:16:48] Finally from spubby if you could go over

[00:16:50] an already covered shown a flop series

[00:16:52] with a different guest you already have

[00:16:53] had on the show.

[00:16:54] What would you go with?

[00:16:55] I would say that we have actually talked

[00:16:57] to quite a few official translators.

[00:16:59] It would be have definitely been super

[00:17:00] fun to talk with the official translator

[00:17:02] on some of these series.

[00:17:03] So that's that's really what stands out

[00:17:05] to me or get an official translator

[00:17:07] to cover a really shitty shittily translated

[00:17:10] series.

[00:17:11] Yeah, and just see what they have to say

[00:17:13] about it.

[00:17:14] That's a good idea too.

[00:17:15] My gut reaction was Alex Patak on Super

[00:17:20] smartphone.

[00:17:20] Oh, yeah, I know Shuckmeister was actually

[00:17:23] very sad when I told him we had already

[00:17:24] covered cool shock BT.

[00:17:25] So I think that would have been a fun

[00:17:27] one to have done with him.

[00:17:28] Oh, that would be cool.

[00:17:29] I'd be down for that.

[00:17:30] Yeah, that'd be rad.

[00:17:31] Yeah, but thank you everyone who submitted

[00:17:33] their questions.

[00:17:33] We really appreciate it and Jordan.

[00:17:35] I want to say I really appreciate all

[00:17:37] of your hard work on the show.

[00:17:38] Thank you David for all the work that

[00:18:20] deadly sins and Jordan what are

[00:18:22] we dropping in the month of May?

[00:18:23] We're going to cover our guesses

[00:18:26] that were on the previous chibi

[00:18:28] episodes as see what we got right

[00:18:30] and we're doing an overview

[00:18:32] of the cover arts.

[00:18:35] We actually are shifting to a new

[00:18:36] system where instead of once a

[00:18:37] quarter we are now doing the

[00:18:39] Shonen drop where Jordan and I are

[00:18:41] going to be talking about every

[00:18:42] episode we drop in the month.

[00:18:43] So we're playing a big game of catch

[00:18:50] details and we're also be digging

[00:18:52] into some interesting questions

[00:18:54] that take too long.

[00:18:54] I've got a really excited one.

[00:18:55] It's very record of Ragnarok

[00:18:57] inspired where Jordan and I are

[00:18:58] going to be talking about something

[00:19:00] that takes a little bit of research,

[00:19:01] but it's going to be fun to argue

[00:19:02] about so stay tuned for that piece

[00:19:04] of content that we're going to be

[00:19:05] dropping every month now along
