[00:00:14] about the first chapter of the series that we'll be covering in depth next week with our guest David Evelyn. No relation. No relation. It would be strange if uh it was like the first name

[00:00:27] you know? Yeah. Uh I'm Jordan with me today as usual is my lovely co-host David say hi David. Hi. I can't do it anymore. I don't even know what you were going. I don't even know anymore. I was

[00:00:38] gonna try and sing Bohemian Rhapsody because we're covering Mama Yu-yu. Mama Yu-yu. Hi David. Honestly one of my better attempts. Uh good attempt David yeah this is uh Mama Yu-yu. Hi

[00:01:00] David. You know I can do it like uh. It's almost like you're a musician. I know right? I just have a dog that's long. Hey that's good. It's more practical than being a musician. Yeah she's mad

[00:01:10] at me. I took her toy away for this recording but anyway Jordan you mind telling us a few details about this manga? Yeah so this is Mama Yu-yu. I think it is pronounced that way. I don't know.

[00:01:18] Mama Yu-yu was created by Hayashi Yoshihiko. It ran from September 11th never forget 2023 to April 8th 2024. 29 chapters maybe three volumes but let's see how this manga started off. Let's go into the

[00:01:36] first chapter plot summary. How about that David? What do you think about that David? Huh? What do you think about that shit? I think it's great. This is the hard one to really think about so

[00:01:45] let's go for it Jordan. Tell us what happened in this manga. A long time ago there was a war between demons and humans. Each generation there was one hero one demon king with markings on their

[00:01:55] hands to identify them. However the war is over and the two factions live together in harmony but despite all this there are still heroes and demon kings. Now the current hero Corleo lives

[00:02:06] with the current demon king Mamama who's actually a woman but she's not called like demon queen she's demon king who she's kind of a maternal figure to him a mama if you would. Whoa whoa

[00:02:19] blowing my mind with that. Yeah one day however a hero from another dimension Evan Algreen appears in their world. Evan's world is still at war and he is shocked to find that humans and demons are

[00:02:32] coexisting. Evan says that his world's demon king will arrive in their world too and he must defeat it but he's immediately thrown in a dungeon. Corleo goes to speak with him because he's like

[00:02:42] man why am I still a hero what does it mean to be a hero there's nothing to fight what does it mean? Evan reveals to him they have something called sigil sorcery which allows him to teleport them

[00:02:53] both outside of the prison where they spar. That night the demon king from Evan's world appears and he teleports Corleo and himself over to fight it. Evan immediately crushes the demon king into a cube

[00:03:02] and then says he actually brought Corleo here so he could kill him because two heroes existing will cause rifts in the space-time continuum or something. First he wants Corleo to tell him

[00:03:10] what a true hero is as if on cue the demon king breaks out and goes to attack Evan but Corleo pushes him out of the way getting sliced into pieces. Oh no cut my life into pieces. Corleo wakes

[00:03:25] up to find mama and Evan kneeling over him as Evan uses his own life force to save Corleo at the expense of his life because he did a real good hero thing and Evan lived long enough to see himself

[00:03:35] become the villain. Corleo sits up as mama goes to embrace him with tears flowing from her eyes. End of chapter one. End of chapter one. So first impressions they kind of closed out a story right

[00:03:47] there David it doesn't really end with uh an idea of where it's gonna go from here. Yeah this is a big earth child where it's a fun first chapter I feel like if you were to tell me how many chapters

[00:03:58] this should have been I would have said like 12 I think you could have told a really interesting 12 chapter story so I feel very good this is going to completely fall apart because it's not 12

[00:04:07] chapters. I think that that makes a lot of sense I think it has potential because I gotta tell you man this is some cool paneling this is like really interesting paneling. The paneling is

[00:04:19] so experimental I wouldn't be surprised if we found out he like worked under Fujimoto but I'm sure he didn't because we would have known that ahead of time but this is some very experimental

[00:04:26] he has a lot of micro panels and he definitely you can tell this is trying to emulate film techniques with like a lot of hard cuts a lot of panning and stuff. I don't know if I'd say that I

[00:04:36] don't know if it's I'd really call it like film I think that he's just using a lot more uh creative techniques like I've seen these in like some American comics that are done by good authors

[00:04:50] like there were aspects of it that almost reminded me of animal man where it was like they were breaking out of the panels and stuff. Oh god I love Grant Morrison. Oh so good no I felt this

[00:04:59] guy was uh really trying to use the medium of specifically comics. Yeah this is definitely a guy with a lot of potential even if the series falls apart just because it's always nice to see an

[00:05:10] author that's actually trying to be creative with their paneling. He's really trying to make something that fully uses the medium of comics in a way that like you could not translate this one-to-one

[00:05:22] to anime. This has diegetic gutter energy if I've ever seen it. Kinda yeah. But to actually get into it I think it is cool it's like a contemporary setting where it's like yeah so demons and humans

[00:05:32] like we wage wars but things are good now and I really do like this idea from the beginning where it's the idea of a hero who's not needed in his current era and how it kind of plays on the idea

[00:05:42] of a chosen one but you know it's kind of a right hero wrong time sort of mentality that I haven't really seen in a manga like this before. Yeah it feels like you know in shows like the Justice

[00:05:53] League Unlimited or something I don't remember if there's specifically an episode where this happens in that but like there are these episodes and shows where it's like they go to another world

[00:06:02] and it's like this is the world where everything is okay and we won and it's all hunky-dory oh this is cool. Like I think Spider-Man probably has one like that. Yeah. Yeah like the one where

[00:06:13] the alternate reality where he's an actor. Yeah yeah like stuff like that but this one takes place in that world from the start. Yeah it's just they're just buddies with their demons you know.

[00:06:24] Yeah I gotta say like it's nice to see a series where it's like humans and demons where it's like nah the demons are also basically people they're just people there's guys. They're like

[00:06:35] dude my account is a demon. It's like why would I want to kill demons? He got me six grand back on my tax return. Yeah. Yeah this is the thing is like you can tell that this author is trying to

[00:06:45] already break his story like he had a really strong plot I don't know if he needed the Isekai guy to be here or he could have kept the Isekai guy in and now it's like someone who's been warforged

[00:06:55] you know he's lost everything and now what does the hero do when he has won in a way that the main character doesn't get to experience because he already was born into an era of peace you know?

[00:07:04] Maybe but I also do think it's interesting for this character to be confronted with like an alternate reality version of him where it's like oh this is like a real hero and like it makes him

[00:07:15] kind of think about like maybe his own shortcomings like the whole thing is like what does it mean to be a hero you know? And then he's like I guess being a hero is pushing yourself out

[00:07:25] of the way of big pac-man face with teeth that's coming to eat you. Yeah. No I mean we'll see how it handles it I mean it's on this show so that's that doesn't really uh bode well for its chances.

[00:07:41] Yeah. But no I'm interested you know? I think this will be the next Earthchild. I also I don't know I felt like it would have been nice if this had been like chapter two or three where he got

[00:07:52] to like know Evan because Evan literally shows up is arrested and then backstabs him and that just feels like a lot going on where we don't really get to see the contrast of the two characters.

[00:08:00] I kind of agree I think it might have been cool if like the demon king was coming to this world like in the future. Yeah. And like Evan and Corleo had to team up and like work together to

[00:08:13] fight the demon king you know? And like god the demon king could be like this big looming threat coming over he- like Future Trunks! Yeah. That's what I'm talking about. Yeah yeah there you go. That's what I'm really talking about here guys. Oh everything's better with Future Trunks.

[00:08:28] Oh yeah yeah Dragon Ball Super superhero might have been better if Future Trunks was in it. I just saw that. Every time Future Trunks isn't on screen all the characters should be going

[00:08:37] where's Future Trunks? Legit uh Dragon Ball Super the only arc I've seen from it that I've been like semi interested in was the Future Trunks one. Yeah even if that arc made zero sense.

[00:08:50] With Goku black turning into super saiyan gay. Rose. I know. God. Jesus Christ it was still way better than like the first grouping of episodes I saw. Oh my god. Oh also another

[00:09:06] experimental technique is I thought it was cool how they did like NPC interviews at the start of the series to kind of establish the setting. Yeah. And that's a that's a really cool technique. I

[00:09:14] think Chainsaw Man has done that but I've never seen that in the first chapter and it seems like it's actually quite a clever idea to get some like organic storytelling all through the series

[00:09:23] didn't really have a framing for why these people were kind of being interviewed but I'll let it be. It did remind me of the part of Chainsaw Man part two where like they're going around

[00:09:32] interviewing people about Chainsaw Man and then they get to Danji who's just like uh Chainsaw Man is like really cool. Yeah. But like did you notice that like in those interviews they interviewed this one guy who was just a completely different art style from everybody else in the

[00:09:50] manga? Oh no I must not have noticed that. Go look at it it's like the first page where that happens. I mean that's the whole idea is like there may be other people from other worlds in the series and

[00:10:01] I really hope that they introduce other power systems like I think that's really cute how Black Clover has different types of power systems that all kind of work under one central set of

[00:10:09] rules just it adds a little bit of variety to how all the characters have different ways of interacting. We saw that in Dark Mage which was cool. Yeah first of all the guy I'm talking about

[00:10:18] is the middle right panel on the first black and white page. Oh okay yeah that's really cool. You see what I'm talking about? Completely different art style. He had one of his assistants

[00:10:29] draw it when he forgot to do it. No but uh they definitely introduce and foreshadow a power system sigil sorcery here which is kind of interesting. Yeah. But yeah I feel like I would read another

[00:10:42] 10 chapters of this it sounds like you would too. I would absolutely I just part of me is like I think it's a cool idea but part of me is like I just want to see how this is gonna probably turn

[00:10:50] into a garbage fire. This just seems like too interesting idea to have only lasted 29 chapters unless it fell apart. I hope that the paneling doesn't fall apart because I feel like like we

[00:11:00] saw with Family Deadly Sins where he just kind of gave up on interesting paneling as he just kind of gave up on the series. I feel like the paneling carries a lot of this chapter. It's so

[00:11:11] interesting. It is so cool. There are moments where it kind of makes it a little confusing but the rest of the time and even during that time it is just it's really cool looking and gets the job

[00:11:22] done pretty damn well. Yeah I'd agree with that. And then Jordan what do you think will happen next? So I think that Evan's arrival already paused rifts which will bring demons into the world. Yeah. I think that political strife starts tearing society apart and starts to threaten

[00:11:38] to reignite the war and I think that Corleone's humanity develops its own sigil sorcery to fight back. How about you man? I think those are all cool guesses. Yeah it'd be interesting if demon like actually evil demons and they infiltrate demon society and they're like trying to but

[00:11:52] the demons are like what we have it good why would we want to change the status quo? Yeah so I think that would be really fun. My guesses are I think the main character has also

[00:12:00] been isekai'd and he's not actually native to this world. I think he's gonna have a big training arc trying to learn how to use the power system. Actually that might be what kills the series is

[00:12:09] they have like eight chapters of him doing that. Oh my god what if there's a tournament? Fuck no he's in an interdimensional tournament and then there'll be a ton of fun cameos or

[00:12:19] spoofs of famous characters. The way that I see it there are two possible ways that this series is gonna go and I mean like I could be totally wrong either demons come into his world or he

[00:12:32] goes to another world. I should say bad guys yeah because obviously Evan was kind of a bad guy and he was not a demon so either the antagonists will come into his world or he'll go into the other

[00:12:43] worlds and try and figure out like how do I become a hero here. Those are the two ways that I'm looking at it. Just imagine he gets reversed he gets double isekai'd like dark mage. Fun fact the

[00:12:53] only non-manga we've ever covered on the show by accident. Whoops! Anyway Jordan what's your power word my man? Mama. Yeah. Mama because it's mama you you and my mama isn't it who

[00:13:04] if we haven't mentioned seems to be a potential situation where I mean she's only 36 but she looks like uh 10 so. Yeah they call her so old that she's 36. God so ancient. Bones to dust. Oh my god.

[00:13:20] She'll finally be the high quality manga'd mom we've been looking for. Yeah. Ship her in Orpheus. Anyway mine is isekai because uh yeah I had a flight that got moved because of a thunderstorm

[00:13:30] so I got up at 5 a.m yesterday so not doing so great but can't all be winners right Jordan? It's okay David. You know who is a winner though Jordan? Uh our listeners? Yeah and people who

[00:14:35] knots. Yep I personally am a character called Esper Cargo who ate a Din Din Mooshied Zone fruit and it's a real fun challenge to figure out how that fruit is useful. You know tabletop gimmick

[00:14:46] characters are so fun to think of and then you actually have to play them and realize oh shit this is why most people don't do this. And yeah so anyway the Jordan I think you might also be

[00:14:59] thinking of a shanks this career where shanks is actually like really really good to his crews. He's like a quantity over quality kind of guy and he's actually very happy to have a lot of

[00:15:08] weaker crews under him. That's true. I mean I was just thinking I'm not strong enough at all to join shanks but I'm also not strong enough to join Luffy's crew. So I mean like I guess that that

[00:15:18] makes sense I don't know maybe the white beard crew they seem pretty cool. Yeah fair enough. I mean he's yeah pre pre paramount war when he was alive. Good yeah fair enough Jordan. All right

[00:15:30] next up we have from our wonderful manga historian Maxie B do you wear wigs? Have you worn wigs? Will you wear wigs and when will you wear wigs? I mean I have worn a wig before in certain situations

[00:16:14] like been priced out of Disney. I'm sure Universal's a good time but I mean like I had like some of the best food I've ever had in my life at Epcot like holy shit. Epcot's very good. Epcot's amazing we

[00:16:28] did like the Japanese place there just like a very traditional Japanese restaurant and we did like the French place where I had escargot for the first time and it was amazing. Interesting. So

[00:16:41] yeah I don't know it's uh I don't see how Universal can uh compete with that. Do they have French cuisine at Universal? I don't know but they do actually have a murder house where they'll

[00:16:52] actually kill you if you pay them enough because they don't fuck around. Anyway next up from Mr. Davey what do you want the second to last series to be covered in Shonen Flop to be? Who the fuck

[00:17:12] be a great one. I also thought that that we would just jump to it and do a revisit of Time Paradox Ghost Rider. Yeah that makes sense. Because I don't think we're getting to a 13 year anniversary

Yeah I was actually reading about how there were like technical limitations why the Digimon evolution system is so arbitrary because they couldn't really fit in progressive like tons of alternative paths

[00:18:30] so they're like yeah it's kind of just fast and loose because we just can't fit more Digimon in the device. Yeah. I personally would go Gilmon voiced by Steve Blum aka Spike. Gilmon rules. I

[00:18:39] love Gilmon. Gilmon is definitely the best partner Digimon. Yeah. And Galmon is super cool as well. Man Digimon Tamers is just a fucking cool series. Digimon Tamers is great. I know some people would

[00:18:51] say Ranamon but those people are furries. Yeah. God. I love how um was it Jesse Otaku did in a sorry not to deadname them I'm not sure what their current name is. Oh yeah yeah I know who it's

[00:19:01] talking about. Jezu Otaku. Oh okay thank you. I think they still use that username it's just the correction no he goes by Jacob Chapman. Whoops. But yeah I love how they use the German dub which

[00:19:14] gives them a very masculine voice in any clips they show during their review. That's so funny. Still trying to get any out of context to review Digimon Tamers but anyway next up we have our
