MAL Description:
Shion is a young man working for the Onmyou Organization under false pretenses. He is attempting to avenge the destruction of his nation and the deaths of his family members, and targets the Empress in an attempt to destroy her homeland. However, their destinies are in fact entwined, as she not only dislikes destruction, but wishes to unite all of Japan peacefully. (Source: ANN)

[00:00:29] Welcome to this episode of Shonen Flop where we talk about manga and shonen jump that didn't make it big. I'm David.
[00:00:33] I'm Jordan.
[00:00:34] Next week we'll be covering Wizard Soul which is a manga I can pronounce. If you'd like to read along with us be sure to join the discussion in the discord and submit your six word summary.

[00:00:45] But this week we are talking about Yamato Jordan say the second word.
[00:00:49] Gensouki.
[00:00:50] We are joined today though by Taryn aka Magalila. Thank you so much for joining us today.
[00:00:55] Thank you for having me. It's great to be here.
[00:00:57] We are so excited. I also want to give a big thank you to Brad aka Isekai sensei for recommending you.
[00:01:02] So I very much appreciate it. We've been very excited to have you on.
[00:01:05] I have to say I really enjoyed your Kaiju number eight review.
[00:01:09] I definitely felt how you brought up that it's an older Shonen Jump protagonist.
[00:01:13] I think we are currently the same age as him which means that we are about to be older than him which
[00:01:17] really makes me feel like I'm crumbling to dust.
[00:01:20] Yes ancient over here.
[00:01:22] I have to ask I know you have been reading a lot of lesser known because publishers send you material.
[00:01:27] What is something that I guess really surprised you?
[00:01:30] Let's be positive. What was something that was way better than you were initially expecting based on
[00:01:34] kind of just your first impression on it when you checked it out for your show?
[00:01:36] Oh, that's a great question. I mean because I literally am one of those people who just
[00:01:40] picks something up based off of the cover art in a bookstore which is not the move usually because
[00:01:46] that can go really poorly really quickly. Something that surprised me I'm just I'm looking around my
[00:01:52] apartment at all the books I have to try to see.
[00:01:54] I guess that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but when you have no context all you got is
[00:01:59] the cover. That's true.
[00:02:00] Well, the thing is there is a summary on the back. I just I don't always read it which is not wise
[00:02:06] because sometimes there are things listed on the back that are things that like I objectively know
[00:02:10] I don't enjoy so then why did I buy it? And that has happened sometimes. I mean I think the biggest
[00:02:16] thing for me is my favorite genre is the villainous genre and before I actually started reading them
[00:02:23] and same thing for isekai. So like female led isekai are so incredibly different than like the tons of
[00:02:29] isekai male lead anime we get. So when I started reading isekai I had this expectation of what it was
[00:02:38] going to be and I do enjoy some of those like very silly isekai anime we get.
[00:02:42] Okay, but my question is how do they compare to vending machine led isekai?
[00:02:48] Fair question. I never actually watched that one even though it did look fascinating. I mean so the
[00:02:53] biggest difference like you know there's usually harems in the male led ones. There's not as much
[00:02:58] like character development. The female led ones the isekai thing I've always seen it as it's really
[00:03:02] just making it so that like from the very first start of the story the female character has a
[00:03:07] very distinct purpose. There's a goal there's usually they have to use their wits to sort of get out
[00:03:12] of something especially in the villainous ones where they usually have a rough idea of like the
[00:03:17] doom that they're supposed to live through and then they immediately have to start doing everything
[00:03:22] they can to change the story. So like and then other than that like you don't often know it's an isekai
[00:03:27] like you could jump in in chapter two or three and not even be aware that it's someone who's
[00:03:31] reincarnated or whatever it is. So I think that's the biggest thing for me is like isekai gets a really
[00:03:37] bad rap because of all of the ones that are really popularized but the ones with female led
[00:03:42] characters are so incredibly different so they were much better than what I was expecting.
[00:03:47] Oh that's awesome. So you say villainous are these ones where the main character comes in and like
[00:03:53] they are the bad guy basically? Kind of so it can go in different ways so often the manhwa so the
[00:04:00] Korean comics are a little bit different than the Japanese manga ones we get but usually what's happening
[00:04:05] is often it's characters who get reincarnated into like an otome game as the villainous character so
[00:04:12] they'll know that in like six of these endings their character is exiled or beheaded or something
[00:04:19] terrible is going to happen so they like as a person in their soul are not necessarily a villain
[00:04:25] character but they are perceived by everyone around them as a villain and so then it's like they have to
[00:04:31] go through this very interesting journey of like trying to change the plot so that's winning people
[00:04:37] over and they can take really different forms some of them are really really silly and then one of my
[00:04:42] favorites it's actually she's convinced that she cannot change her ending so every time she wins
[00:04:48] someone over she makes them promise that they'll kill her if she starts being evil because she's convinced
[00:04:52] she's gonna do these things like the plot somehow gonna make her do these terror and they're terrible
[00:04:57] things like she in the story has someone murder his mother like it's actual evil things yeah so she's
[00:05:03] convinced that like she is going to end up doing those things against her will so it just sets up a
[00:05:08] start that you can go really fun silly direction or you could have this sort of like almost horror
[00:05:13] scene things where you're really trying to fight against that fate that's so interesting yeah i mean
[00:05:18] isekai is such a complex genre because there's so many bad isekai yeah a lot of them are just what if
[00:05:24] this character was the protagonist of dragon quest yes that's why i absolutely love fantasy anime that's
[00:05:31] not an isekai shout out to free run free run is so good even though ijan called it an isekai which
[00:05:36] showed how little research did you see her like top 10 isekai anime has free run is number six and
[00:05:42] they're like what are you really gonna trust the website that gave god hand to three fair but i will
[00:05:48] trust the podcast that talks about this manga so shall we move into getting into the details on the series
[00:05:52] yep yeah jordan take it away so this is yamato gensoki tucker had a little bit to say uh about
[00:06:00] the title yamato is the family name of the emperors of japan the yamato era more or less like the longest
[00:06:08] dynasty in recorded human history like this has been the same family for a very long time the yamato
[00:06:13] era was the first era when the yamato emperors came into power and you know yamato's also used to
[00:06:18] refer to uh the japanese people as a whole i remember uh in megaman actually david there is
[00:06:25] yamato man and then in megaman battle network they changed his name to japan man for some reason but
[00:06:33] yeah the word genso means fantasy and the key at the end isn't really a word but a a suffix that can
[00:06:38] be slapped to the end of a noun to mean something like a record or chronicle of tucker says that uh if
[00:06:44] he had to give this an english title he would have chosen something like uh yamato fantasy
[00:06:48] chronicles okay interesting okay yeah also just for the record tucker is one of our researchers who
[00:06:55] works on the show and they provide us with a lot of detail on like the translation and pronunciation
[00:06:59] and stuff cool so thank you tucker for that thank you and this was written by kentaro yabuki who was
[00:07:05] an assistant for takeshi obata i feel a man who needs no introduction a man who needs no introduction
[00:07:12] because he is the artist of death note yeah he did do death note he also did platinum end and
[00:07:20] and school judgment yeah school judgment uh don't read school judgment kentaro yabuki had as an
[00:07:27] assistant shiho kashiwagi i have no clue who that is i got nothing i hadn't heard of their series
[00:07:33] either so it's okay but maxi b says they're famous so i'll take their word on it uh right but this dude is
[00:07:39] actually a legend in his own right yeah this dude's done shit that i have heard of like black cat i've
[00:07:44] actually read a little bit of black cat i read it a really long time ago i remember i enjoyed it but
[00:07:50] i could not tell you a thing about it at this point it is one of the most 2000 or like early 2000s manga
[00:07:57] you could possibly find if you understand what i mean by that yep he also did to love rue oh i learned
[00:08:04] that that title is actually a pun because in japan it is called to love rue which is like trouble
[00:08:11] interesting i can almost see that yeah and yeah that was a big hit yeah he also did uh to love rue
[00:08:17] darkness which is a continuation which is extra horny i believe it and he did darling in the franks
[00:08:24] the manga version oh yeah huh this man loves his horny oh yes that's the horny mech anime uh
[00:08:32] say this is pretty tame in comparison yeah yeah right this is him like clearly trying to do
[00:08:39] something different he's like oh no i should just make horny manga that's much more successful yeah i
[00:08:44] feel like after black cat he was just like i'm horny fucking whatever and then finally he did ayakashi
[00:08:50] triangle which is also a pretty big hit yeah relatively big hit yeah uh it was infamously
[00:08:57] taken off shown and jump because it was too horny for the magazine wow that says a lot considering
[00:09:03] the most recent chainsaw man i was gonna say yeah well this one literally has like a girl masturbating
[00:09:09] in the shower oh cool and it was like it was in print shown and jump which chainsaw man part two is not
[00:09:15] yeah and they're like maybe we shouldn't be putting this in a magazine for 12 year olds with school
[00:09:20] judgment printed in shown and jump i think it was but there's a difference between sexualizing and
[00:09:25] straight up showing someone masturbating yeah right taron for reference uh school judgment's a pedophile
[00:09:31] manga oh cool great yeah i love that that's why i said don't read it multiple times and it is right on
[00:09:38] the shown and jump app if somebody were to decide to read it and they had a shown and jump app subscription
[00:09:43] yeah whatever it's right there so you know wow great oh man but jordan do you want to tell us how
[00:09:49] long this series ran for yeah we're talking about yamato gensuki thankfully not the other one the other
[00:09:55] thing i just mentioned yeah so this ran from february 15th 1999 to june 14th 1999 so this was a short
[00:10:02] run it replaced hara luya two boy and when i say two it is i i like boys two men and the o has a
[00:10:11] slash through it like it's like a scandinavian letter work it work hallelujah is that that might even
[00:10:18] just be like a version of the name of the word hallelujah but it was created by haruto umezawa
[00:10:25] 33 volumes hit with an anime all right and the series that replaced this was servibi by sunomaru
[00:10:33] that was three volumes that was a flop this series started at the same time as field no okami fw
[00:10:40] jean shukyu den what a title but we're seeing a lot of titles by yoichi takahashi that was also a flop
[00:10:49] and what's more a title dice wo hilda dice king tilde by munanori michimoto two volumes flop but
[00:11:00] yamato gensuki 18 chapters two volumes obviously a flop because it's on this show let's hear what happens in
[00:11:07] these chapters it's warring states era japan and shion is a teenage assassin working for a group
[00:11:12] known as the anmyo union his job is to kill the heads of state and watch the whole nation crumble
[00:11:17] he does this because no joke he thinks that destroying every nation will result in no more war
[00:11:22] shion is sent to the yama nation where he defeats the young empress io in a duel with his super cool
[00:11:27] assassin magic and becomes her bodyguard he goes to kill her but she reveals that she knew he was
[00:11:32] an assassin because he used assassin magic which is something only assassins do whoa
[00:11:38] she tells him she wants to unify japan and end wars that way and that she'll conquer the holy city of
[00:11:44] takama to do so because it's the center of japan or something then shion's buddy shows up and takes her
[00:11:49] hostage telling him to kill her because destroying all nations is how you end wars io is like that's
[00:11:55] fucking stupid where will all the people go and shion is like oh shit i never considered this very
[00:12:00] obvious consequence of my actions shion jumps in to defend her betraying his old allegiance to stop
[00:12:06] the other assassin his determination makes his sword turn into a shingu a magic sword named sukiyomi and
[00:12:12] he kills the bad guy and resolves to protect io popcorn jordan the captain of the guard doesn't
[00:12:17] trust shion but then he thwarts an assassination attempt and he likes shion then he asks shion to
[00:12:21] teach them magic and he doesn't want to do it so the captain doesn't trust shion and then they fight
[00:12:26] a little shion says he'll teach them and then he likes shion again it turns out that every nation
[00:12:30] with info on takama is getting wrecked by the onmyo union so they go to a nation with info on takama and
[00:12:37] see it getting wrecked by shura a guy from the onmyo union he has a cool shingu and reveals that shion
[00:12:44] was the heir to the tsukuya royal family which was wiped out by onmyo shion gets mad when he learns this
[00:12:51] and fights back sending shura running then we find out that there's a descendant of a takama citizen
[00:12:58] living in the forest of no return so they decide to go there to do so io enlists the help of retsu
[00:13:04] a kid who gets a crush on io gets jealous of shion being near her and just all around fucking sucks i
[00:13:10] hate this guy so much i really really do not like this character get him the fuck out of here he could
[00:13:15] talk to plants though so he's useful for navigating the forest popcorn david they go to a town in the
[00:13:21] front of the forest of no return where a guy tries to turn ropes into snakes to stop them from going
[00:13:26] and he's like dang you can tell with those eyes that she's seen hell and tells the guy about how
[00:13:30] you actually was adopted by the previous queen they enter the forest and are stopped by guardians
[00:13:34] controlled by haru the descendant they were looking for and she brings them to her home she thinks to
[00:13:39] herself dang you can tell by i was eyes that she's seen hell haru sends you into a cave to prove she's
[00:13:44] not evil where she encounters a mirror that digs up her trauma meanwhile a bad guy from
[00:13:48] omg named coma shows up to fight shion they train together and coma has a big chip on his shoulder
[00:13:54] about shion being better so he shows shion his new shingu which looks like an evil version of his
[00:13:59] huh where have i seen this kind of idea before they fight and kiss uh no they don't kiss and coma wins
[00:14:05] at first but then shion is unconscious he meets his dad who slaps him and tells him to wake up
[00:14:09] shion wakes up and wins that's kind of it bye bye
[00:14:14] yeah as we've mentioned many times uh there are only about three ways that cancelled manga and
[00:14:21] this is the ending where they just pretend it didn't end like they're in denial that the manga
[00:14:27] actually got cancelled yeah it's just like to be continued yeah it was weird yeah let's get into
[00:14:34] the characters so uh do you mind telling us about shion yeah so shion has is framed as this like
[00:14:41] tragic past um his whole nation was wiped out and then the assassin showed up and were like hey we can
[00:14:48] end war and he believed them and so then he goes around essentially assassinating leaders to take down
[00:14:53] their nations which is like the slow way of ruining a nation and then when he actually you know meets io
[00:14:59] all of a sudden he's very like blushy and caught off guard by someone being nice and like noticing that
[00:15:05] other humans exist yeah i mean so then you know he sort of tries to train people because he's like
[00:15:10] super strong but also like he doesn't have a control on his emotions and soul and things so i mean he
[00:15:16] is framed as supposed to have tons of character growth it just happens very fast it really seems like the
[00:15:24] second eo brings up like the smallest criticism of his ideas and what he believes he's like
[00:15:30] fuck i'm an idiot yeah because he's an idiot he's just so mopey yes he's so oh god he's he's annoying
[00:15:40] like i mean to be fair like everyone he knows was murdered yeah and he's like isn't he like 13 or
[00:15:47] something yeah he's like 12 or 13 yeah so like he's a kid so i kind of get like the first time someone's
[00:15:53] nice to you you like yeah because the first thing he thought the assassins were being nice to him and he
[00:15:58] immediately started killing people so like i guess this is a better version of that that is fair i like
[00:16:03] how it's that trouble like you were the only one who was ever nice to me yeah yeah um also his dad is
[00:16:08] like really important i it was like his dad was like a royal or something i feel like i kind of miss
[00:16:12] his dad was the king yeah he was like the emperor of their nation the sukoil the bear nation
[00:16:19] the bear nation yeah also i think he's a tsundere oh 100 yeah he's a tsundere rare male tsundere
[00:16:27] category like vegeta from dragon pussy or very similar to like windbreaker i don't know windbreaker
[00:16:32] yeah i'm unfamiliar oh you it just had an anime it's excellent but the the main character is very
[00:16:37] similar in like demeanor but i would say like more appealing but i'm just imagining an izakai that
[00:16:42] time i got reincarnated as a tsundere yeah oh man he also has like a massive sword
[00:16:48] that is literally taller than he is which i thought was funny and it can get bigger and it
[00:16:54] can get bigger yeah oh god all right and then jordan do you mind telling us about uh the empress
[00:17:00] ew yeah so so this is eo eo i think is very stupid because here's the thing eo is constantly putting
[00:17:08] herself in danger and it's like eo you're the empress if you die your entire nation is fucked like
[00:17:16] how do you not know this like the first time we see her she is fighting she is dueling shion then
[00:17:24] they go to approach this uh area that's getting like currently sacked by like shura the bad guy
[00:17:31] she's just like no i must put myself in the fray in between my bodyguard and the bad guy and it's like
[00:17:39] why do you even have a bodyguard right she felt like very confident in the first chapter and then
[00:17:45] the offer just completely retconned like she was like a tomboy at first and then she just became
[00:17:49] kind of useless she's just not well written like having read a lot of similar stories where the
[00:17:55] female lead like can fight and do things or maybe is like an empress whatever it's like when they need
[00:18:01] her to show up and be brave they write her as if she has these skills that she's never used before
[00:18:06] like that when they're in the forest and all of a sudden she's the only one who can hit the got
[00:18:10] whatever those golem type tree things were yeah but it's like that it's never she's never shown
[00:18:16] training she's never like it skipped over all the parts that should have shown her like why she has
[00:18:21] that strength it's just magically when they need her to be the strong female character they have
[00:18:25] her as that and then otherwise she's just this sort of like kind of love interest with a dark past
[00:18:30] yeah we'll definitely get into it but the characters do not really seem to actually act like independent
[00:18:36] characters in this series also at some point they decide that she had like horrible trauma yes i feel
[00:18:42] like they hadn't really brought that up prior to it but then characters just start saying man look at
[00:18:48] her eyes you could just fucking tell that she's been through some shit and they never get to that they
[00:18:53] never actually get to what that trauma is because i guess you know the manga refused to acknowledge that
[00:18:58] it was over yeah i'm just imagining the trauma was like such a first world problem like imagine where
[00:19:04] it's like oh my butler had to live on the grounds they didn't even have their own butler's quarters
[00:19:09] so i had to see them when they were going to bed oh god right oh talking to the help is just the worst
[00:19:15] i know right although i thought it was implied that she wasn't actually royalty yeah she was adopted by
[00:19:21] like queen himiko so i said on the last uh on the chivvy that this was these characters were from
[00:19:28] romance of the three kingdoms i was wrong they are from the records of the three kingdoms which
[00:19:33] was a historical document that formed the basis for romance of the three kingdoms but yeah so
[00:19:41] allegedly you know these are historical characters io was allegedly like a real person and so was himiko
[00:19:48] let's get to the next character uh renza i hate him i hate him so much i i'm so annoyed by this
[00:19:53] i liked him you did i did out of all of them he seemed the most consistent i mean if you're a big fan do
[00:20:00] you want to talk about him i mean he shows up as a very typical like rival love interest um immediately
[00:20:06] falls in love with io like wants all of her attention will do anything to protect her has these
[00:20:12] like nature powers where he can like hear the spirits in the forest that like tell him what's going to
[00:20:17] happen so he sort of has this like predictive ability which is kind of cool and then you know they
[00:20:21] write in that he has some trauma and stuff but i just found it really refreshing like he's very
[00:20:25] like ride or die for io like he would run around and follow shion and help him like i just he seemed
[00:20:31] like of all of them the most like i don't know interesting like fully fledged human i thought he
[00:20:38] was kind of like i don't know i knew what to expect from him i think is what it was so it's felt
[00:20:43] refreshing that was my problem though like this manga already felt extremely generic to me and then
[00:20:49] when he showed up i'm like oh of course this character's in here of course they got the horny guy
[00:20:54] who's like uh who views uh this guy as like a threat like all right whatever like i was just
[00:21:00] like personally i was just done with him the second he showed up but jordan he was abandoned as a child so
[00:21:06] he has trauma oh god the fucking trauma oh my god can you believe it what are the odds and man you
[00:21:16] won't believe it but io's got the worst trauma of all of them oh my god and you really won't believe
[00:21:22] it because it's never shown it's never shown there's a lot of things that are never shown there's
[00:21:27] also shura who is technically the big bad he doesn't really show up much i just wanted to shit
[00:21:31] on him because he's like such a stupidly blatantly evil guy who's just like oh you made me use 20
[00:21:37] of my power interesting let me see how you grow i could stop this plot now but for reasons i never
[00:21:44] explain i won't well then he goes down in one hit yeah he's yeah he's like no no i'm just gonna
[00:21:50] leave now i i i didn't lose i'm i'm just leaving baka baka this manga would be great if every
[00:21:57] character was in dairy and it just fucking didn't mix yes if this manga was a parody this character
[00:22:04] feels like a parody i maybe like 20 years ago it wasn't such a trope but at this like if he was
[00:22:08] introduced straight face in a manga now i would have thought he's a parody that that's fair i'm not
[00:22:14] manga was good when it came out i would never say that but this manga has not gotten better with age
[00:22:20] what's the name of the fake manga that's in witch watch oh i don't remember but it's really good
[00:22:25] oh god i need to get the name of it i still will never forget the moment where it's like somebody
[00:22:31] asks like uh this guy if he's gonna do something and he's or if he believes something or something
[00:22:36] it's like it's something mirage no but at the same time yes yes so good anyway god oh um
[00:22:43] uran mirage this feels like a real version of uran mirage anyway let's get into why it failed so
[00:22:49] what would you say are some issues because i think the spoiler alert we didn't like this series very
[00:22:54] much but what were some things that really stood out to you as issues i mean to me it felt like i
[00:22:58] was reading bullet points of a story yeah yeah so it's just like nothing ever settled it was just
[00:23:04] like immediately like if there was a conflict which often the conflicts did not feel like real
[00:23:09] conflicts it would be resolved within like a couple of pages like there was no real it didn't
[00:23:14] feel like the characters were struggling it didn't feel like they even were getting to know each other
[00:23:17] which the thing i always enjoy the most is sort of the character development aspects and it was just
[00:23:22] sort of like he showed up immediately has a connection with people then there was a guy who
[00:23:26] didn't like him and then so they sort of fought and now they're best friends and now he's gonna train
[00:23:30] people and then we don't actually see the training and then all of a sudden they're good at
[00:23:34] things like it just it felt like there was never any actual development of anything it was just sort
[00:23:39] of like here's what i need to do to get to this next plot point but just like super accelerated yeah
[00:23:45] and even the fight scenes are like that where he just cuts around them because the artist clearly
[00:23:49] doesn't like drawing fight scenes so he just shows kind of the impact after like an implied fight scene
[00:23:54] i also feel like this series got redundant a bunch of times like um you know you just mentioned it's
[00:23:59] like oh these guys fight to uh establish that they're friends but like you know already
[00:24:03] learned respect yes he'd already earned respect because he already saved eo and then this guy was
[00:24:10] just just made up some bullshit about how oh well you're only here to protect eo well then i don't
[00:24:15] respect you and it's like dude he saved your empress yeah what the fuck like it doesn't make any sense
[00:24:23] like this conflict was already solved what are we doing wasn't there some plot where he still wanted
[00:24:28] to kill her in the first chapter that also is just completely forgotten about god i don't remember
[00:24:32] well i think it's because she says all the who would be left of the nation and then he just drops
[00:24:37] it this first chapter feels like a completely different manga because there's plot points and
[00:24:41] characterizations that are ignored yeah which is so weird right yeah i also like the whole purpose
[00:24:47] of this like is the unifying japan aspect and they keep mentioning there's all these different
[00:24:52] nations but then also they mention that she has a bunch of other unions with other nations and it's
[00:24:56] just sort of like they'll like name drop the name of a country or nation or whatever
[00:25:00] we're calling them and then like i was supposed to know who they were aligned with or why would i care
[00:25:05] like it just felt like the world wasn't actually real like it just there's the assassins and then
[00:25:12] it was them and there were supposed to be all these other people fighting for control of this
[00:25:16] like secret city situation but we never actually hear that they exist yeah well did you guys have any
[00:25:23] understanding why they were looking for the secret city no i thought that it was because it was the
[00:25:30] center of japan and so that's why they needed control of it because then you would have like
[00:25:34] the best strategic spot i don't know if that's true i guess it's like my question because it seemed like
[00:25:40] she didn't want to conquer it she wanted to prevent other emperors from conquering it or like there's a
[00:25:47] power of god that will protect them if they take it in the very last chapter they have that old woman
[00:25:54] hints that like the the source of the magic system that's you know is in that city right okay so i i
[00:26:03] think it's just we didn't get there in the story because there's also like this whole thing like in the
[00:26:08] very last chapter they're like oh this sword like heavily implied that the sword is like one of five keys
[00:26:13] for the door to this city and that's why the assassins even exist because they're trying to
[00:26:18] cultivate these people to awake these like soul swords and so i i think it maybe was center of
[00:26:24] magic or something but i don't know that there was also like they made a big deal about this magic
[00:26:29] system and then he just like kind of skips actually explaining it or showing anything interesting
[00:26:33] because it's like the same abilities every single time yeah they even had a literal teaching arc where
[00:26:38] he is teaching people and i still didn't understand anything about it i don't know that we can even call it
[00:26:42] a teaching arc because it was like two pages that's true i just like the idea that there was
[00:26:46] literally a teaching arc which is outrageous oh my god yeah yeah it's also just like there was so much
[00:26:53] talking and dialogue in the chapters were so inefficient that rope snake chapter that jordan mentioned is like
[00:26:58] a sentence was an entire chapter instead of being like six pages yeah yeah well why did we need to
[00:27:04] spend so much time with the old man he didn't do shit yeah i mean just to make it seem like they're
[00:27:09] special for being able to get past him oh you've solved my snake puzzle oh damn yeah i guess i guess
[00:27:17] you can go then which like i don't even understand the point of that because like there's the forest
[00:27:22] golems like so i think he was trying to save them or whatever i don't know yeah he was basically trying
[00:27:27] to scare them from getting killed by the forest golems yeah nothing happened and moose happened so
[00:27:33] slow i just lost track of everything going on you know they also don't really establish what the current
[00:27:37] situation in japan is it's like you need to historically understand this era of japan which
[00:27:42] i didn't really know yeah so i'm like i don't really understand the value of what they're trying
[00:27:46] to do and what's so important they either went too slow or too fast yeah there's nothing in between
[00:27:51] in the second chap they meet like this uh other nation and then the nation just immediately reveals
[00:27:59] that it's like the onmio union secretly in disguise and like that felt like that felt like
[00:28:04] you're gonna string us along for a couple chapters or at least one full chapter nope no
[00:28:09] yeah just the second they show up yeah there's no tension like you're never worried something's
[00:28:14] gonna happen because it immediately happens so like there was no point where i was ever like
[00:28:18] invested or concerned about these characters because there was no situation that actually felt
[00:28:23] threatening yeah it's also these characters were entirely reactive despite the thought being that
[00:28:28] they should be proactive of having an agenda so it's like they just let people have things happen
[00:28:32] to them and they're like oh i guess we'll deal with that now and i'm like well weren't you like
[00:28:36] you had like this really noble goal that you're trying to do like none of you actually seem to
[00:28:40] organically be bringing change into this world also i just i just really feel like everyone was stupid
[00:28:45] yeah in this yes like yeah they should be more proactive like they have this goal to conquer
[00:28:53] japan why are they being just like so docile i guess well that was the thing that bothered me the
[00:29:00] most about eo is like they say that all these other like unions are following her now but it's like
[00:29:05] why like she hasn't yeah she's not plotting anything she's not they say she has these like
[00:29:10] she called they call her a priestess but like at no point do we see any of that so the justification
[00:29:16] is hilarious because they straight up say yeah actually eo kind of sucks at everything but she's got
[00:29:23] like a really nice smile that makes everyone want to follow her right you got to protect that smile
[00:29:28] like as a woman sucks to read like that being her only worth is like oh she's cute and like attracts
[00:29:35] people with her smile and wins them over is awful to read like especially when they're trying to frame
[00:29:40] her as this like woman who can take down things with a spear it's like i where is that coming from
[00:29:44] yeah we can tell this offer doesn't exactly have the highest thoughts of women based on his other
[00:29:50] material based on the other words which like now that i know that i'm glad how she was written in this
[00:29:56] one frankly that's true this is probably this was his best written female character i did notice by the
[00:30:01] way her breasts started growing in size throughout the manga too as she got dumber yeah of course they
[00:30:07] did she was getting bimbo by the manga yeah she literally real-time bimbofication that tracks
[00:30:14] yeah oh god oh just like his master obita anyway why don't we get into what it did well jordan as
[00:30:21] i don't even i was gonna say something about how you're not a bimboers i i don't know i'll just
[00:30:25] fucking go for it from bimbo to himbo there we go jordan take it take it away so what it did well
[00:30:32] um swords looked cool yeah there were a lot of shots like really close-up shots of the sword
[00:30:38] where i was like does he like not have the sword designed yeah yeah it seemed like sometimes like
[00:30:43] the sword didn't end um which that's kind of a cool concept but it wasn't what he was doing it was
[00:30:49] just that long of a sword it couldn't fit in the panel it's like kamina's sword in gurin lagon
[00:30:55] yeah oh my god yeah i don't know uh shit the art i think was decent yeah the art was decent yeah the
[00:31:03] art was actually like pretty good in parts you know he couldn't draw a fight scene for the life of him
[00:31:08] though the setting is interesting to see something uh based this far back in japan i mean you know i've
[00:31:15] we've seen it once or twice but like you know that's cool i mean i think like there are plot ideas
[00:31:23] in here that are good ideas and i've read other things that do them really well like inherently the
[00:31:28] idea that he is betraying his assassin family and then is like going against the guy who essentially
[00:31:35] like took a man and raised him and you know then there's that like rival and stuff that's all like
[00:31:39] it's a good idea it just wasn't executed well same thing with her as like a princess empress whatever
[00:31:45] like that is fundamentally a good idea and there are other stories that do it better it's just it
[00:31:50] just wasn't executed well yeah that's that's the thing this is a cool idea i actually unironically
[00:31:55] like the idea of the main character actually being in a teacher position because it's very rare to see
[00:31:59] in this kind of series it doesn't make sense that he's 12 years old and teaching people but it did
[00:32:02] show at least the npcs wanted to be helpful like they're like oh teach us magic so we can help you fight
[00:32:06] the npcs yeah i love that you call them npcs yeah they never got names no that's very fair it's just
[00:32:15] really funny more agency than some of the main characters because they're like well we're not
[00:32:19] helpful why don't you help us gain this ability to be useful which at least is novel in a lot of
[00:32:23] series we've read yeah like why didn't eos to be taught this magic that probably would have been
[00:32:28] useful yeah yeah or the princess and at least the series didn't sexualize the female characters like
[00:32:34] his other works that's good right i like the idea of like this secret city they have to find that's a
[00:32:39] really compelling idea it's just we never got there but like the fact that you know there might be a seal
[00:32:44] or whatever they have to break like that's a cool like kind of like a castle in the sky vibes which i
[00:32:50] love that movie so yeah i also think that these are good character designs good character good character
[00:32:58] designs i was getting a real jango and sabota from bok tai feeling from you know the main character and
[00:33:07] the bad version of the main character is evil twin oh yeah it's a real shadow and sonic situation
[00:33:13] yeah yeah actually yeah as our listeners may better recognize yeah i just wanted to talk about bok tai for
[00:33:22] five seconds of course it's the power of the sun in your hand yeah let's get into where it could
[00:33:29] have gone taryn what are some things that you feel you would have really revised about the series to
[00:33:33] have made it more successful i think the biggest thing is like you could keep the bare bones plot but
[00:33:38] it just needed to slow down and actually like live in the plot let the characters breathe i feel like
[00:33:45] there was no scenes where like characters were just interacting to get to know each other so then
[00:33:49] we don't get to know them i mean and i'm especially critical of eo again just because i've read so many
[00:33:54] other stories where the story is centered around a female lead who is a queen or a princess or an
[00:34:00] empress who is fighting to save their country or whatever it is and i think if you know they could
[00:34:05] have shown whatever the secret trauma was uh from the beginning like if that really was truly the plot
[00:34:12] point because it was hinting at the fact that she was special in some way because of what she'd gone
[00:34:16] through and i think if that had been explored throughout if they had shown her getting trained
[00:34:21] and like getting good at using the spear or if she already started at it maybe learning magic or
[00:34:25] something like just letting them actually get to know each other because it literally like they meet
[00:34:30] all of a sudden they're besties then they're defeating the assassins then they're going on like
[00:34:35] it just was so quick paced that nothing ever really felt developed so if they'd just taken the time to let
[00:34:42] us actually get to know these characters i think it would have been like way more successful yeah you
[00:34:48] know and then if after like the big thing where he's meeting his former mentor like there was no fallout
[00:34:52] from that where he was like upset that he had met him and had to fight him it was just oh we did this
[00:34:57] like let them have emotions i feel like kind of most of the issues seem to be centered around eo
[00:35:03] because hey author you know there are ways to show that her eyes reflect some kind of trauma like he just
[00:35:10] kept saying her you could see hell in her eyes but whenever they show her eyes she's kind of smiling
[00:35:14] and like nah you can like do stuff with that there are ways to like express this i also just she had to
[00:35:20] be for lack of a better term more bloodthirsty she needed to want it more it seemed like she had no
[00:35:28] pragmatism basically she didn't really seem to want to do the dang thing it felt like she was doing
[00:35:35] it so that they wouldn't get destroyed as opposed to actually wanting to unify japan which i think
[00:35:40] are two very different motivations and like just being on the defensive is not as interesting for
[00:35:44] a character especially because it really like when i was trying to write a summary for this i really kept
[00:35:48] feeling like she was actually the lead compared to because he's yeah she has interesting but like
[00:35:53] there was nothing until the last chapter they didn't reveal like the special stuff about him really
[00:35:57] yeah i don't know you had to be more hardcore yeah something i think would have been interesting
[00:36:02] is what if she was kind of like i don't know how familiar you are term of chainsaw man but what if
[00:36:06] she was legit like in our makama where she was like i need to do this shit because it actually has to
[00:36:11] get done blood has to be spilled to unify the japan and one of the main character yeah initially
[00:36:16] believes her and sees how extreme her thoughts are and what she's willing to do and he's like fuck
[00:36:20] maybe i really do actually need to kill her right exactly and that would have been really cool
[00:36:24] because they alluded to in the first chapter and dropped that as a concept it would have been
[00:36:28] interesting if things weren't fully dropped you know what if yeah like maybe the main character
[00:36:34] regrets like betraying the place that he lived with like right what if his uh the onmyo union wasn't
[00:36:41] like obvious bad guys maybe they had like a reason to want to bring down like nations like it's one of
[00:36:48] those things where if you said like oh these are guys who are total anarchists who want to like end war
[00:36:54] basically and like like you know it's like i might not agree with that but like okay i can see where
[00:36:59] they're coming from but no no they're just cartoonishly evil well i think also even if they didn't change
[00:37:06] like the setup of like who was good and evil they should have had him be her bodyguard still intending
[00:37:11] to kill her for a while and then she wins him over like throughout the process and i feel like the
[00:37:17] reveal of her also knowing he's an assassin would have hit much harder if like she had known he was an
[00:37:22] assassin for weeks and was just manipulating him and trying to get him over to her side like that
[00:37:29] in and of itself that should have never been resolved in chapter one yeah yeah i also think
[00:37:33] it would have been interesting if they'd actually done something with the magic system like i honestly
[00:37:37] like the teaching idea and what if like when he gets kicked out of the guild he actually like loses his
[00:37:41] connection to the mana system and now he has to like kind of be like a mortal and like really teach
[00:37:46] and like build up this army from scratch like i think base building is such a cool idea and going from
[00:37:52] would have been a really interesting way to heighten the stakes and show a sense of development
[00:37:56] every chapter where you're really seeing them upgrade their settlements gain new territory gain
[00:38:00] new allies in a way that the series just literally focuses on three people despite it being about
[00:38:04] unifying an entire country or taron like the thing with like him not blowing his cover maybe he
[00:38:10] would have fought with like his mentor in order to keep his cover and then that would be a whole thing
[00:38:15] yeah like it just would add a lot more to him as a character the reveal of her knowing would have
[00:38:21] been much more interesting and it would have been like oh i thought she was just this cute princess
[00:38:25] or empress and i keep calling her a princess because she doesn't feel like an empress honestly
[00:38:29] no but it would have felt like uh immediately our perspective on her switch is there too
[00:38:34] yeah i mean it just didn't feel like anyone was utilized well i mean and even the magic system i found
[00:38:41] confusing because it's like there's the magic where you know he can use the assassin rock magic stuff
[00:38:46] which is supposed to be super rare but then also there's this whole like manifestation of your soul
[00:38:51] into a sword system and i never really understood if everyone could do that or if it was just certain
[00:38:57] people and like why was it only the assassins could use the rock magic was it just that they
[00:39:02] were taught it and everyone could do it so that's when we hit the like teaching arc i didn't understand
[00:39:06] what they were being taught honestly now you say magic system i think you could argue there was no magic
[00:39:13] system there was just magic there was just magic magic that's sarah silverman gif that's the thing
[00:39:22] is like i feel like there could have been a really interesting and we've definitely seen other manga
[00:39:26] that are pretty much this idea actually executed in the ways that we wanted to as tyrian you've said
[00:39:30] that you just want to talk about a different manga it's like hey it's this but better so i know we're
[00:39:34] almost at that spot but why don't we get to miscellaneous thoughts and then we can actually dive
[00:39:38] into some things people should read instead of this series all right so to all kick things off with
[00:39:43] thoughts this kind of reminds me of the worst parts of slime reincarnation where they just have
[00:39:47] chapters of people just talking about things and nothing actually happens and a lot of people drop
[00:39:50] the series including myself yep and i was like holy shit i was like they were making these mistakes 20
[00:39:55] years ago it's like you can't just have people talking about doing things for six chapters and
[00:39:59] expect people to actually care about what's going on anymore now is slime reincarnation different
[00:40:03] from that time i got reincarnated as a slime i'll leave it to as a puzzle for the listener to figure
[00:40:08] that out i also was imagining one of the main characters just because there was that scene where you
[00:40:12] like had cooking and it was really terrible and imagine if the mc was like giga chatting he was
[00:40:16] like bro you suck at cooking that would have actually been something like an actual character
[00:40:20] moment though oh no did you have any miscellaneous thoughts i mean the thing for me i actually the
[00:40:25] most interesting character was the rival who showed up in like the last two chapters just because he was
[00:40:30] like so passionate and he had a drive to beat the other guy and all of a sudden he like had worked
[00:40:34] really hard and manifested the sword and it's like why is this character who i've known for a chapter
[00:40:39] more compelling than everything else you've written why did they have two separate bad guy
[00:40:43] wait why didn't they just bring the main bad guy back for that chapter if it was ending right it was
[00:40:47] very weird that he was just like chilling like over like watching what was happening like a villain
[00:40:54] yes chilling like a villain oh god yeah and yeah he that last guy had soul edge that was 100%
[00:41:01] nightmare like weapon yeah that was what i put in my notes i was like this is some soul caliber shit
[00:41:07] that was nightmare versus siegfried right there i mean this was made like 1999 that is not a
[00:41:13] coincidence that was like peak soul caliber yeah i also though maxi b has some really interesting
[00:41:19] thoughts where they said eo's design was reworked kyoko kurosaki and black cat who in turn was reused
[00:41:24] into a root this sort of recycling and reuse of characters is a bit of a staple of the author's work
[00:41:28] and uh we've definitely seen other things like um have you ever heard of omagodoki zoo no i have not
[00:41:34] have you heard of my hero academia yes so that series actually recycles the design of a gang orca
[00:41:40] and because he was like whoa this character is i was really good i gotta put in a not canceled manga
[00:41:46] he's right that that was a really good character design to his credit yeah but it's just funny how
[00:41:51] we were like wait we've seen this guy before yeah he just showed up in the middle of the manga i was
[00:41:55] like wait isn't that a character from my hero academia i love when they do that's so stupid um i mean
[00:42:01] fuji moto did that too weird naio is from a one shot he made oh in the decades since this has flopped
[00:42:06] it's become quite relevant again where spoiler alert this is actually a prequel to ayakashya uh
[00:42:13] ayakashi ayakashi triangle david i would have been really disappointed if you mispronounced triangle
[00:42:19] triangle um this is the actual spoilers it turns out that the main duo are the latest incarnation of
[00:42:25] the main characters of this series so we actually get some sort of ending and just spoiler that's good
[00:42:32] yeah this is like how uh the ending to batman beyond was just one episode of justice league
[00:42:39] unlimited yeah but yeah and then some bonus author trivia the author is a big fan of dragon ball and
[00:42:44] once won a contest for suggesting a fusion between gohan and trunks hopefully that was before goten and
[00:42:49] trunks fused that's really stupid you should not be winning an award for that whoa what if go what
[00:42:55] yeah seriously uh yabuki is go hanks also speaking of witch watch he is actually brothers in love with
[00:43:03] the offer of witch watch so i actually wonder if uran raj actually is making fun of this series
[00:43:08] oh my god god what a fucking small world that's amazing i love it and then early in their career
[00:43:14] asumo akimoto osamu akimoto yeah that one kuchikame fame praised how he drew curls encouraging
[00:43:22] him to keep working on them to the point where decades later it's literally what he's known for
[00:43:25] again we gotta stay in this series for not actually sexualizing women especially because she's like 14 or
[00:43:31] something i really wonder if he was like dude if i had put boobs in this series it would have been a hit
[00:43:35] he might have been right though given his other material he might have been right unfortunately but
[00:43:41] yeah as everybody and for those who don't know kuchikame is like the simpsons of shonen jump in that it
[00:43:47] was like a comedy that ran for like 30 fucking years yeah and then some volume extras include
[00:43:52] full page sketches of the major characters um and afterward and uh max b said that's it there's not
[00:43:57] a lot of meat on these bones nope does anyone have any other miscellaneous thoughts not really
[00:44:04] oh what this is just generic i don't know this was a manga all right so well then i think then it
[00:44:11] sounds like it's time for the final verse so let's get into that let's get started with our six
[00:44:15] stories from the community tucker says fuck this just read japanese history maxi b says ancient
[00:44:20] history quickly becomes ancient history boom dackerson yada yada yada japan was unified diego
[00:44:26] expecting more ecchi from the offer and reject story focus return to horny it seems that seems to be what
[00:44:33] he's good at i don't know yeah i mean he knows he knows his audience you gotta respect it dude rock
[00:44:37] says yabuki manga flopped back to horny glornak iron spot political drama but even more boring
[00:44:43] gray potter empress couldn't even unify a fan base oh that's that's savage oh boom captain
[00:44:48] clueless story ended with to be unified lord anubis the black cat crossed yamato's path portal man
[00:44:54] shogun games went downhill after this spubby a yabuki series where's the nudity and spike a try of
[00:45:00] are a try tries and aya fails oh that's a good one that's that's clever and then um tarim what was
[00:45:06] your six for summary so i took mine as more of a literal here's what the story is supposed to be
[00:45:11] about um as opposed to a funny like that's totally fine which it's more of an idealized what i wanted
[00:45:17] it to be so empress uses assassin to unite japan okay because that's what i would want it to be
[00:45:22] that's what i would have wanted it to be too but yeah jordan how about yours so imagine that i am
[00:45:27] taking my index finger and putting it to my temple as i say can't fight wars if they're dead
[00:45:34] god and then i had three um so you guys will have to let me know just because we didn't have a ton from
[00:45:38] the audience let me know which one is the best mine were please please please just stop talking
[00:45:43] and then in honor of the sundary motagnes my plot's boring on purpose baka and wanted historical fiction
[00:45:50] not historical fantasy so i know it's not the third like historical friction so those were mine i think
[00:45:55] the bako one's my favorite yeah yeah i agree but i also just like the the pure rage of please please
[00:46:02] please stop talking yeah i was listening to a lot of sabrina carpenter i'll do it anyway do we all feel
[00:46:07] this is a certified flop this was pretty bad yeah yes so taryn will you tell us and i know you've
[00:46:13] been here to say what is something someone should check out instead um so it's a shoujo not a shounen
[00:46:18] but i'm sorry i'm sorry you're not no i know i know i'm kicked out no no that's fine it's yona of
[00:46:25] the dawn we actually were on a podcast about that so jordan i've read that series i mean it's i mean
[00:46:31] number one it's still ongoing it's at like 42 volumes or something but just everything this
[00:46:36] attempts to do it does so much better because the the female lead um who is the lead of the entire
[00:46:43] series it it starts out with her living her normal life as a princess in her kingdom and in the first
[00:46:50] i don't know if it's the first chapter or second chapter all of a sudden her father is murdered by
[00:46:55] her childhood love who she thought she was going to grow up to marry who's actually i think he's like
[00:46:59] a distant cousin or something and then all of a sudden she's they're shooting at her trying to kill
[00:47:03] her she's going on the run she leaves with her other childhood friend and so now immediately she
[00:47:09] has to figure out like can she get her country back she's fleeing she's having to interact with all of
[00:47:14] the other countries and they are all actually explored they all have different unique fighting
[00:47:19] styles she learns how to fight throughout this process she has hawk who's the male lead train her
[00:47:24] and there's also like magic and fantasy elements because there's the kingdom that she runs was
[00:47:30] started by this sort of ancient dragon king and so there were four dragons that supported him and so
[00:47:37] the whole thing is is she the reincarnation of this famous king and so there's these people who
[00:47:42] manifest these dragon powers and so there's four of them and she has to go around and find them and
[00:47:48] gather their strength and they themselves are essentially the equivalent of like an entire army
[00:47:52] so there are army battles in this there's scenes where she's has to work with people who were her
[00:47:57] enemies or people who were her friends or suddenly her enemies it just it does everything better like
[00:48:02] as a female character she is leaps and bounds above you um hawk i think is a more successful
[00:48:09] shion because he's he's not an assassin but he is now essentially positioned to have to murder his former
[00:48:15] best friend to get her her kingdom back oh it's just there's so much more like intrigue within the
[00:48:22] characters yes like you and you care about them and then all of these different dragons that she's
[00:48:26] collecting have this special bond with her so there's also like a romantic drama the unfortunate
[00:48:31] thing is because it's a shoujo people constantly call it a romance and there is a romance plot to
[00:48:36] it but like it's a subplot just like romance is a subplot in like so many shonen jump series
[00:48:40] um like black clover and like you knew yasha kind of right like well like black clover fairy tale all
[00:48:46] have tons of romance right like if the girl's a main character then it's a romance i don't know what
[00:48:52] to tell you that's just that's the rules i don't make them it's like it's my constant struggle that's
[00:48:57] why i read a kanibanashi for the romance yeah my favorite thing is uh to make videos where i call
[00:49:04] like shonen series romance like hell's paradise is a romance because his whole plot is saving his wife
[00:49:08] like you can't argue otherwise that's that's what it is like that's his whole goal in life yeah so
[00:49:13] like it's it's a very long series it's still ongoing so you definitely have time to catch up but
[00:49:17] it's just if you like the base plot of this it does it 12 times better can you do me a favor and
[00:49:23] and make a video arguing how evangelion is a romance i haven't seen that but i could watch it and do it
[00:49:29] go you should uh well because i the other day on my netflix it had the newest naruto movie in the
[00:49:36] romance section so i've i've been like collecting data to just do the biggest like series on why every
[00:49:43] shonen jump like if yana of the dawn is a romance here are all these other series that are too
[00:49:47] yeah it's like it's like the whole arguing that everything's an isekai thing except it's romance
[00:49:53] right exactly oh man speaking of netflix the evangelion new dub people kind of hated it because
[00:49:59] like they replaced the iconic characters but like i judge both dubs you know what yeah the old one is
[00:50:04] iconic uh but the new one is better i'm sorry that's how i feel about the sailor moon ones
[00:50:09] yeah like dubbing in the 90s was a lot worse well they also changed a lot i love how chill chuck
[00:50:16] aka chucklefuck and shinji have the same voice actor really yeah i've been watching dungeon meshi i like
[00:50:21] it so shinji voices chucklefuck i actually call him chucklefuck so much that my friend actually
[00:50:26] thought that was his name in dungeon meshi for a long time yeah uh my recommendation is the elusive
[00:50:32] samurai which is much the same the last surviving thing of like an a clan trying to unify japan build his
[00:50:38] army so it's essentially what i want out of this where it's him kind of starting from scratch getting
[00:50:41] his allies having wars uh it's a fun series an anime i think started or starting soon so you can just
[00:50:46] check that out it has some uneasy there's a character who's pretty much a pedophile in it that i really
[00:50:50] don't like so i'm hoping the anime toned it down by the way it's a pretty good read and it's by the guy
[00:50:54] who made assassination classroom oh my recommendation is a manga that is the complete opposite of this manga
[00:51:01] in every single way and david that's berserk which is speaking of positivity speaking of positivity
[00:51:08] that's the it's all the positivity reverse for berserk it is an extremely brutal manga do i have to explain
[00:51:16] berserk to you no do i have to explain berserk to you listener it's berserk it's really good
[00:51:23] not a hot take not a hot take at all but the coldest take i can think of i think
[00:51:28] all right well then i guess jordan though this since this is certified flop is this the worst thing
[00:51:33] we've ever read no no it's bad it's not not the worst thing we read is this the worst manga you've
[00:51:39] ever read in your life no uh we've all lived very blessed lives what is what would you say is the
[00:51:44] worst thing you've ever read i mean there's some things i've read i really don't like age gaps
[00:51:50] they're bad yeah yeah well like if it's an appropriate adult age gap that's fine the thing i don't
[00:51:55] like is being caught off guard by an age gap and it is a very common thing to not mention it in the
[00:52:00] description um so when i do actually read the summary and it's like oh this is a cute romance
[00:52:04] between like a tech ceo and a employee whatever but it's like the employee is actually a 14 year old
[00:52:11] intern or something oh god um so a lot of that like so i can't think of like a specific title on the top
[00:52:17] of my head but it's a lot of that where it's like you're enjoying something and then all of a sudden
[00:52:21] you're really not what's like the most recent terrible manga that you've read besides this can
[00:52:27] you remember well yeah i'm trying to think of what the title is um it's essentially a rape fantasy oh
[00:52:34] cool yeah it's framed as like a villainous isekai so i was really excited for it i thought i was going
[00:52:40] to love it and it starts out where she is engaged to the prince he wants to leave her so she magically
[00:52:48] drugs him ties him up to a bed um oh jesus sleeps with him and the whole time is using language that's
[00:52:56] like framing her actions as good and uses like rape apology language saying like oh he you know
[00:53:04] finished so he enjoyed it so he it's not a bad thing so that was really bad i can't think it's
[00:53:10] something is like all it's something titled like i'll have my way with you or something before you
[00:53:15] discard me we might have to put a trigger warning in this episode well and the thing is that there's
[00:53:20] no warning about this in the description yeah at all so you go in thinking you're gonna read like a
[00:53:25] pretty standard like romance story where the woman's exiled or something and instead you are reading along
[00:53:30] with the protagonist you're supposed to sympathize with someone i mean and then he gets revenge and
[00:53:35] stuff so it's all over a mess but it's just like was bad oof well definitely people should not check
[00:53:41] that out no yeah no shall we get to wrap up let's do it taryn i want to say thank you so much for

[00:54:14] stuff i'm buying or i'll post like shopping vlogs and then i review what i like or people ask me for
