[00:00:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Welcome to this episode of Shonen Flop where we talk about manga and Shonen Jump that didn't

[00:00:33] [SPEAKER_04]: make it big.

[00:00:33] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm David, I'm Jordan.

[00:00:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Next week we'll be talking about, ooh, Super Dog!

[00:00:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Really?

[00:00:37] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know how to say that second word but Super Dog, that's not a word for ravioli.

[00:00:41] [SPEAKER_04]: If you'd like to read along with us, be sure to join the discussion in our Discord and

[00:00:44] [SPEAKER_04]: submit your six words summary finally to our Discord in our episode description and

[00:00:48] [SPEAKER_04]: on our website, shonenflop.com.

[00:00:50] [SPEAKER_04]: But this week we are talking about Wizards Soul and we are joined by our guest,

[00:00:53] [SPEAKER_04]: the wonderful Tri-Attack Zach.

[00:00:55] [SPEAKER_04]: Hello!

[00:00:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Hey!

[00:00:57] [SPEAKER_04]: Thank you so much for submitting the Be a Guest form.

[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_04]: It's always awesome when people fill that out.

[00:01:01] [SPEAKER_04]: We do try and go through it.

[00:01:02] [SPEAKER_04]: People are looking, it's linked in every episode.

[00:01:05] [SPEAKER_04]: And Zach, do you mind telling the audience a little bit about yourself?

[00:01:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, so I am Tri-Attack Zach.

[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_02]: I am an amateur Twitch streamer, a standup comedian and all around just lover of all

[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_02]: things.

[00:01:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Weave, Otaku and Nerdy trying to basically cut up my little nerdy quarter on the internet

[00:01:21] [SPEAKER_02]: where I can share the stuff I love with everyone and in return.

[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Everyone can kind of share their stuff with me and we just kind of teach each other

[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_02]: things, learn things and have a good time.

[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_04]: I can respect that.

[00:01:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And so why did you pick the name Tri-Attack?

[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Just for the rhyme or is it actually your favorite Pokemon move?

[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_02]: So it is actually my favorite Pokemon move.

[00:01:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Oregon Z is one of my favorite Pokemon and about 10, 12 years ago when I first

[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_02]: had the idea of maybe dabbling in content creation, I wanted to do almost exclusively

[00:01:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Pokemon content and I just wanted to have something that meant something.

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_02]: So it was my favorite move from my favorite Pokemon and just like how Tri-Attack

[00:01:57] [SPEAKER_02]: has the three elements in it, there are multiple components to who I am.

[00:02:01] [SPEAKER_02]: So that way I don't get locked down to just one thing.

[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_04]: I love it.

[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm just imagining now speaking of Porygon Z, Porygon Sigma and it just

[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_04]: fucking is a portico with that fucking meowing face.

[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Kind of wish your name was like Josh, but like you changed it to

[00:02:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Zach to fit with Tri-Attack.

[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that is not above something that I would do.

[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_02]: I love a nice catchy rhyming name.

[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Isn't that right, Horton Jordan?

[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, God damn it.

[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_04]: All right, Jordan's like, I have a super bad headache.

[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_04]: He was like, well, try to think of a nice rhyme on the spot, Jordan.

[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_04]: You got this.

[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_04]: I have a literal migraine.

[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_04]: That's the experience of reading this manga.

[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, no.

[00:02:50] [SPEAKER_04]: All right, let's get into manga details.

[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_04]: So Jordan, tell us all about the series.

[00:02:55] [SPEAKER_03]: So this is a wizard soul Koi no Seisan, which literally means Holy War of Love

[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_03]: or apparently G-Hot of Love.

[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, the word G-Hot shows quite a few times in this manga.

[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, holy shit.

[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_03]: This is created by Aki Eida and that is Aki Star.

[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_03]: There's like a little star in between Aki and Eida, but notable

[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_03]: people they had as assistants.

[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_03]: No one really knows, but an assistant runs her various socials.

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Did you just say her?

[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my God. Yeah, that's right.

[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_03]: It's our second ever female mangaka.

[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Whoa, put it on the board.

[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Our second ever confirmed female manga.

[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_03]: You're right. But yeah, it's really cool.

[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_03]: And that kind of there are little bonus comics at the end and

[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_03]: at the end of a lot of these chapters and most of them are translated.

[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, well, we'll talk about it.

[00:03:49] [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, apparently she is a prolific doujin circle leader and mangaka.

[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_03]: And apparently there's just like a massive list of things she's done.

[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_03]: But according to Maxi B, some of the things were

[00:04:02] [SPEAKER_03]: a bonoji, koiwa, hikari, please wake up, kusakabe san and hokago metaverse.

[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, another metaverse, David.

[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh God, just that please wake up.

[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_04]: I was like, what if someone listening is like anacoma?

[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Please wake up.

[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Please wake up. It wasn't your fault.

[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Just come on a little bit.

[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Just a little.

[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_03]: It was your fault, but please forgive yourself.

[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, but yeah, so this this ran in monthly comic flapper as in the 1920s.

[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, flappers.

[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_03]: And according to Maxi B, this is this is what girls in the ponsor ran in.

[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. Wow.

[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_03]: That's the manga where like the girls

[00:04:43] [SPEAKER_03]: transformed into tanks, right?

[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_04]: No, they it's just cute girls doing cute tank things.

[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Right. Yeah, it's basically Harry Potter school.

[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_02]: But instead of magic, everyone gets a tank.

[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_02]: That's better than Harry Potter.

[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_03]: But according to Maxi B, it is it is a magazine for adult men,

[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_03]: but usually starring women, which I don't know this one.

[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_03]: This one felt more like a straight up shoujo manga.

[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_04]: It probably was shoujo, to be honest.

[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. And it ran from August 2013 to August 2015.

[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Twenty two chapters, four volumes.

[00:05:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Let's get into the plot summary about that.

[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, let's do it.

[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_02]: The entire world is centered around wizard soul,

[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_02]: a card game that is that's 90 percent magic.

[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_02]: The gathering 10 percent made up bullshit.

[00:05:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Monaca works in a car shop

[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_02]: frequented by kids who she routinely loses to.

[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Sakurai is a boy with a powerful deck who has a crush on Monaca

[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_02]: and likes walking her home one day.

[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Monica's out of work father comes home to reveal

[00:05:36] [SPEAKER_02]: he got caught in a rare card scam.

[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Look in boomers and put them all into severe debt.

[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_02]: God damn it. Yeah, he kind of fucked up.

[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. Yeah, just just a little bit.

[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_02]: The only hope they have of paying it back is for Monaca to win

[00:05:50] [SPEAKER_02]: a big W.S. tournament so she gets serious

[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_02]: and breaks out the annoying bullshit deck.

[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I just realized I wonder if there's ever any references to why

[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_02]: shorts, which is another popular Japanese card game.

[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's one that I keep seeing.

[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_02]: And that's basically just the anime card game, right?

[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Where they have they have chains on man cards.

[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_04]: I've never heard of this.

[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's just like a weeb card game.

[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't actually know how you play it.

[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_04]: My friend just had cards and I made fun of him for it.

[00:06:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh yeah, it pretty much just exists

[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_02]: for anyone who's too cool to play any other anime card game.

[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_02]: So you get to play them all.

[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Yep.

[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to go to Otacon by the end of the week.

[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe I'll see some of them there.

[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_03]: You definitely can find white shorts cards.

[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_03]: So what is it called?

[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_04]: White shorts.

[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_04]: White shorts.

[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Weiss Schwartz.

[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Weiss Schwartz.

[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_04]: It's German words. Just Google it.

[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Just Google it.

[00:06:38] [SPEAKER_02]: We've card game.

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_02]: So it means white black?

[00:06:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I think so.

[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Just go into your local card shop and start yelling in German

[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_02]: and someone will eventually get it.

[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Look for the person who smells the worst,

[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_04]: they're probably playing it.

[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Let me just openly insult people.

[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_04]: No, no, no.

[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's so it's all people who like manga,

[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_03]: AKA our listener.

[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's how mighty number nine was like,

[00:06:58] [SPEAKER_04]: oh, look at these weebs in their basement to play.

[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_03]: And they're like an anime fan on prom night.

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_03]: It's your fucking demographic

[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_04]: that's going to be playing a mega man game.

[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Anyway, sorry, please, please do continue, Zach.

[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_02]: She needs points in order to join the tournament.

[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_02]: So next day she challenges Sakurai to a game.

[00:07:13] [SPEAKER_02]: If she wins, she gets all of his.

[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_02]: And if he wins, she'll do whatever he wants.

[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Whoa.

[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Ooh.

[00:07:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank God he's not like a creep because anyway,

[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_02]: which he thinks is her way of telling him that she likes him.

[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_02]: She ends up crushing him in a horrible, annoying way

[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_02]: and taking all of his points.

[00:07:34] [SPEAKER_02]: He leaves in a huff and they both regret

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_02]: that it looks like their relationship won't recover.

[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Popcorn Jordan.

[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's great because like this apparently affects

[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_03]: his chances of getting into high school.

[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_03]: There's like a grade well to apply her your score.

[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_04]: So she really fucked up his life by doing this.

[00:07:51] [SPEAKER_03]: She like fucked him up.

[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Can we take a second just to be like how into this card game

[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_02]: this world is like a small jump ahead?

[00:08:00] [SPEAKER_02]: But apparently you can add your college grades

[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_02]: with how good you are at the game

[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_02]: and your horoscope is determined by the game.

[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's borderline dystopian.

[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I feel like it's taking Yu-Gi-Oh!

[00:08:13] [SPEAKER_03]: to its logical conclusion in like a different way.

[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, there's literally your dueling performance

[00:08:19] [SPEAKER_04]: can influence what high school you go to in Yu-Gi-Oh!

[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_03]: And probably oh yeah, because they have special

[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_03]: duelist ice goals.

[00:08:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and probably like also what jobs you can get.

[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh God, imagine the interview

[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_03]: is you have to duel your interviewer.

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Or they make you open a pack of cards

[00:08:36] [SPEAKER_04]: and they're like I only hire lucky people.

[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. Oh my God, the LinkedIn posts in that world

[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_03]: must be horrible.

[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_03]: God, see, I want to see more shit like that.

[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_03]: They didn't really talk about

[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_02]: how their entire society's warped around this.

[00:08:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Can you imagine your entire life

[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_02]: depends on whether you can top deck

[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_02]: the final piece of Exodia?

[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_03]: It turns out that the reason why

[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Monica is so good is that her terminally ill mother

[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_03]: was an expert player and her mother had this idea

[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_03]: that like the more she suffered, the better her luck was

[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_03]: and the better her playing was.

[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_03]: So like young Monica got the idea where it's like

[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_03]: because of this, like she's resigned herself

[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_03]: to her fate and hasn't really been trying anymore.

[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_03]: So if I defeat her, then she'll rally

[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_03]: and she'll be able to recover.

[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_03]: She didn't win even once.

[00:09:27] [SPEAKER_03]: But in the process,

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_03]: learned incredibly powerful techniques

[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_03]: as well as horrible trauma.

[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Monica's first match in the tournament is against Ota,

[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_03]: a fat girl with a fatty deck.

[00:09:40] [SPEAKER_03]: And don't blame me for that.

[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_03]: That's what they say.

[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_04]: They dressed her up in like,

[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_04]: what was it they dressed her up as in like a cover page?

[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_02]: It was like they put her in like a cat made outfit.

[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_04]: It was a cat made. OK.

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. Monica just really hates playing

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_03]: because it's triggering to her mother's death.

[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_03]: I wonder why.

[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_03]: So like while she's playing,

[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_03]: like there's all these there are like these black text boxes

[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_03]: and she has this blank expression on her face.

[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_03]: And but despite this, she just crushes Ota.

[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Next, a girl who has a crush on Sakurai

[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_03]: that Monica defeated in Chapter Two tells her next opponent, Oji,

[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_03]: that Manaka stole her deck and she gives him a list of her cards.

[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't help him win against her.

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Her next opponent is Aki, a.k.a. Roman.

[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Hey, cousin. Hey.

[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Hey, cousin.

[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_03]: You you have to go bowling.

[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Big Dark Magician Girl T T's anyway.

[00:10:34] [SPEAKER_04]: This is the Jordan we're getting tonight.

[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_03]: She runs a fucking exodia deck.

[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Manaka switches things around and exodia obliterates her ass instead.

[00:10:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Next, she's pitted against a cat girl named Kokono

[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_03]: and her best friend slash maybe girlfriend, Yukino.

[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_03]: There's there's something there.

[00:10:53] [SPEAKER_03]: It's a little bit of chemistry.

[00:10:54] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know. Maybe they're just friends.

[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_02]: They're in lesbians.

[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Just just friends, only friends.

[00:11:00] [SPEAKER_02]: And they were dueling partners.

[00:11:02] [SPEAKER_03]: They were roommates.

[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Yukino was bullied because even though she has an encyclopedic knowledge

[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_03]: of WS, she is trash at the game.

[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Kokono, however, stood up for her by dressing silly, which brought them together.

[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_03]: The jealous girl from earlier takes Monica's deck and marks her

[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_03]: cards up with a utility knife.

[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_03]: She then tells Kokono that Manaka is cheating.

[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_03]: However, Antler Kokono loses.

[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_03]: The jealous girl walks up and asks, Hey, why didn't you tell the judge?

[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_03]: You would have got her disqualified.

[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_03]: And Yukino says it's because you're fucking lying.

[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_03]: You're a fucking piece of shit bully.

[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_03]: And Manaka was not paying attention to that shit.

[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_03]: It didn't even make sense.

[00:11:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Which cards were you fucking marked up?

[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Fuck off. Go away. We don't like you.

[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they just like mark some random ass cards.

[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. And I love the recon.

[00:11:50] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, by the way, these cards have always had sleeves on them.

[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_04]: I just never true them.

[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_04]: That was a weird, weird take.

[00:11:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Here's the thing.

[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Clearly, the offer is not actually very well versed of how high level

[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_04]: magic gathering play goes because there's a lot of little things.

[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_04]: And I think in some jokes, she's like, I have a consultant.

[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_04]: So she probably didn't really play magic that intensely before making this.

[00:12:12] [SPEAKER_04]: She mentions that she's like a casual place.

[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. Now, I think one of the things at the end,

[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_02]: they mentioned that they wanted to make it because they didn't have anyone

[00:12:21] [SPEAKER_02]: to drink and play magic with or something along those lines.

[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Like she wanted to play against other female magic players,

[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_03]: but like it was really hard to find them.

[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Popcorn David, her next opponent,

[00:12:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Samugi is an ancient 29 year old talented victim of the Dunning Kruger effect.

[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Could you imagine being 29 years old?

[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_04]: God already in the grave.

[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_04]: That triggered me so much when I saw that.

[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_02]: There's a Yu-Gi-Oh player who's in his fifties

[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_02]: and he is one of the most beloved players in the pro league right now.

[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_02]: He's the guy who did exodia.

[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he pulled off exodia at a YCS.

[00:12:56] [SPEAKER_03]: He pulled off exodia.

[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_03]: It was so cool. Oh my God, it was the coolest fucking thing.

[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_04]: But anyway, yeah, it's a close match of Monica,

[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_04]: but Monica wins because Monica can never lose.

[00:13:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Then she plays against an asshole who makes fun of Sakurai

[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_04]: and she obviously wins because he sucks.

[00:13:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Then she defeats a girl off a deck of cute cards.

[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_04]: It's time for the finals where Monica plays against a dude named

[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Chikudate with a Hawaiian burned deck who's a protege of Samugi.

[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_03]: All of his cards were dated.

[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_03]: They're we're like Hawaiian.

[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, yeah, there was a lot of really weird references that was cool.

[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, this whole time Monica has been absolutely miserable.

[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_04]: But Chikudate's love of the game makes her start to question

[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_04]: if maybe she can enjoy it too.

[00:13:35] [SPEAKER_04]: She still crushes him though and wins the tournament.

[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Since she won, she gets to play an exhibition match against the White

[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_04]: and Idle, who is an expert at White, was fucked.

[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_04]: I saw WS and I started saying White Schwartz.

[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Monica puts together her deck with all of her friends' cards and loses,

[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_04]: but she already won the money.

[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_04]: So who gives a shit?

[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_04]: The next day, Sakurai goes into the card shop to find Monica's swamp

[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_04]: with fans trying to get her autograph.

[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_04]: He gets her to come play WS with him as he struggles to tell her he loves her.

[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Monica says she hates playing, but he says that he disagrees.

[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Monica wouldn't be this ready to play if she hated it.

[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_04]: She realizes that actually she does kind of like it and cries a little bit.

[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_04]: They go for a walk and Monica tells Sakurai she loves him at the end,

[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_04]: except Jordan wrote awesome.

[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_04]: He's going aww and he got a chibi point.

[00:14:14] [SPEAKER_04]: That motherfucker.

[00:14:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, the end.

[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_04]: So anyway, let's get to the characters.

[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Zach, do you mind telling us about Monica Ichinose?

[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Which is the last name I don't want to talk about

[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_04]: because it just makes me think of Ichinose's deadly son.

[00:14:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Same.

[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_02]: That gets me the entire time too.

[00:14:32] [SPEAKER_02]: It took me a while to even realize her name was Manaka or Monica.

[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_02]: However we want to pronounce it.

[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah.

[00:14:38] [SPEAKER_02]: So Monica is the main girl.

[00:14:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Her the deck that she uses, I think is one of the most.

[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's probably the high point to me is the fact that she uses

[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_02]: like a stun control deck, like literally designed to make everyone else

[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_02]: have no fun just like her.

[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Not only that, but like people comment on the fact that her deck

[00:14:56] [SPEAKER_03]: is filled with garbage, like her deck should just fucking suck.

[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Like they're all like extremely conditional cards,

[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_03]: but like she's good enough where she makes it work basically,

[00:15:07] [SPEAKER_03]: which I thought was cool.

[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_03]: And like, yeah.

[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_02]: One thing that I wrote down about her that I when then the first start

[00:15:13] [SPEAKER_02]: that I'm just like, oh, it's kind of funny.

[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_02]: She's cute and happy and she has this like kind of dark, no fun deck.

[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_02]: And then as the story progresses, she kind of just starts matching the deck

[00:15:23] [SPEAKER_02]: more and more getting darker and darker.

[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[00:15:27] [SPEAKER_04]: You saw when those black text boxes come out, you're like,

[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_04]: all right, this is going to be some fucked up shit is going to be going on.

[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[00:15:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Holy shit.

[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_03]: She just is miserable playing this.

[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_04]: I also want to say, I don't remember the last time we saw a proper

[00:15:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Kudere character.

[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_04]: What's a Kudere?

[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_04]: A Kudere is like Robin from One Piece, like the bad bitch arch type

[00:15:44] [SPEAKER_04]: where she knows what she wants and how to get it.

[00:15:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if I would describe her that way.

[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_03]: It's more like she she's a Sundarai for the for the card game itself.

[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.

[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_04]: She's definitely at first.

[00:15:55] [SPEAKER_04]: If I at first thought she might have been a Yandere,

[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_04]: which imagine that she was legit, like I will do anything

[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_04]: to win these games and start like, you know what, David?

[00:16:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't think she's any dare.

[00:16:06] [SPEAKER_04]: That's impossible.

[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, every girl does have to be a dare type.

[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I understand that.

[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_03]: But like all Darries are beautiful.

[00:16:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Every girl and Vegeta must be a dare.

[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_03]: It's the best Sundari.

[00:16:20] [SPEAKER_03]: The best Sundari.

[00:16:21] [SPEAKER_04]: I also want to say that I actually talked to Tucker

[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_04]: and her name, despite having the word mona in it,

[00:16:27] [SPEAKER_04]: is not a reference to Magic Gathering.

[00:16:29] [SPEAKER_04]: He checked it's a different spelling in Japanese.

[00:16:31] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a possible that maybe the offer just didn't realize it was spelled differently.

[00:16:36] [SPEAKER_04]: But it could have been a pun.

[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, but it's just like it doesn't seem to intentionally be

[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_04]: that her name is a magic gathering reference.

[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a short bit.

[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Got you. OK. Yeah.

[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_02]: I never even noticed that until you brought it up.

[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_02]: I just I just like Japanese name.

[00:16:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I just thought that it was like it seemed like

[00:16:52] [SPEAKER_04]: could have been a fun nod, right?

[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Because that's the name of the resource system magic.

[00:16:55] [SPEAKER_04]: It's mona. I digress.

[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah. Yeah.

[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_04]: So what I'll see you guys think about her.

[00:16:59] [SPEAKER_04]: I just I don't know.

[00:17:00] [SPEAKER_04]: I just kind of wasn't that big a fan of her, to be honest.

[00:17:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think one of my kind of hang ups is kind of like I said,

[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_02]: I like the idea of having a main character in a hard game,

[00:17:11] [SPEAKER_02]: manga or anime playing more of a degenerate stun deck

[00:17:15] [SPEAKER_02]: and then maybe gaining confidence going into other decks or, you know,

[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_02]: just there could be a fun twist on it.

[00:17:21] [SPEAKER_02]: But it eventually just turned into every chapter.

[00:17:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Someone trying to come up with a giant strategy engine.

[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_02]: She just goes no and takes away all the stakes.

[00:17:30] [SPEAKER_04]: She had so much plot armor, like Yu-Gi level plot armor

[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_04]: where she just always had the proper card.

[00:17:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I thought that like her backstory was very interesting with her mother.

[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I actually really liked that whole thing.

[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_03]: I thought they were like the best chapters in the series.

[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. Where it's like she was going up against her mom

[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_03]: and as her mom like got more and more terminally ill,

[00:17:54] [SPEAKER_03]: her deck became more and more filled with like zombies

[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_03]: and like skeletons and stuff.

[00:18:00] [SPEAKER_03]: I thought that was like a really cool way to use the premise of like the cards.

[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, also made like a lot of sense.

[00:18:07] [SPEAKER_03]: It really made you understand why she was simultaneously very good at this game,

[00:18:13] [SPEAKER_03]: but like did not like playing.

[00:18:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, like where it's like, yeah, she was playing every day

[00:18:18] [SPEAKER_03]: against basically essentially a grand master of wizard souls.

[00:18:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Like every day, but it was an extremely traumatizing experience.

[00:18:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_03]: She also had a bunch of people at school that like hated her for no reason.

[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, they hated her because the one girl was in love with Sakurai and teenagers.

[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and got basically jealous of Monica

[00:18:42] [SPEAKER_03]: and she was also kind of the leader of her clique.

[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_03]: So her clique kind of did whatever she wanted.

[00:18:47] [SPEAKER_03]: And that's her. And then speaking of clique,

[00:18:50] [SPEAKER_04]: Jordan, do you mind telling us about Sakurai?

[00:18:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so he's kind of like the male love interest.

[00:18:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Not as important as Monica.

[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he just kind of is there.

[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_03]: He's there every now and then.

[00:19:03] [SPEAKER_03]: He kind of shows up in disguise to watch her play.

[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Clearly loves her like whenever they talk, it's like he's very awkward

[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_03]: and he doesn't know how to talk about anything other than wizard souls.

[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you know, it's actually kind of believable for a middle schooler.

[00:19:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know. But yeah, he's like a really good player,

[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_03]: but she still has fucking points.

[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, she really fucked him over.

[00:19:24] [SPEAKER_03]: She fucked him over.

[00:19:26] [SPEAKER_02]: How does that allowed at the tournament?

[00:19:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, can you imagine if like, let's say I ran into a NASCAR driver

[00:19:33] [SPEAKER_02]: and I said, hey, if I can beat you in a race,

[00:19:35] [SPEAKER_02]: I get to take your place at the next race.

[00:19:38] [SPEAKER_03]: At the end of the series, I think she was kind of saying,

[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_03]: hey, let me give you your points back, kind of like she needed it

[00:19:45] [SPEAKER_03]: to get into the tournament and win and win it.

[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_03]: But I think it was like kind of stated or implied that she was

[00:19:51] [SPEAKER_03]: at least trying to give him his points back.

[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_03]: I think he said, no, you keep them.

[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm already homeless.

[00:19:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Or it's like my parents are already rich as fuck.

[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_03]: So he also gives Manaka the card Holy War,

[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_03]: a.k.a. Jihad.

[00:20:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Jihad.

[00:20:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Jihad.

[00:20:15] [SPEAKER_03]: It's dark hole from Yu-Gi-Oh,

[00:20:16] [SPEAKER_03]: wipes all the monsters on the field.

[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I love the only time she ever actually draws it.

[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_02]: The first time she ever actually draws it, she doesn't even use it.

[00:20:27] [SPEAKER_02]: She literally discards it right in front of him like, I don't need this.

[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_02]: What a dick move.

[00:20:32] [SPEAKER_03]: God, oh God.

[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Now, she she was playing like an asshole, basically,

[00:20:36] [SPEAKER_03]: but it was all like it was all like psychological and shit.

[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. Oh, man.

[00:20:42] [SPEAKER_04]: I feel that's it.

[00:20:43] [SPEAKER_04]: There was really there were a bunch of side characters.

[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_04]: I did appreciate that they kept them relevant, but no one really matters that much.

[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_04]: So why don't we get into why it failed?

[00:20:52] [SPEAKER_04]: Speaking of how she discarded his gift, what an asshole.

[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_04]: So, Zach, what would you say are some things

[00:20:58] [SPEAKER_02]: that stood out to you, things you didn't enjoy as far as that goes?

[00:21:02] [SPEAKER_02]: I think one of the first things that gets me

[00:21:05] [SPEAKER_02]: it very clearly wanted to be Magic the Gathering.

[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_02]: But the let me copy your homework, but change a few things version.

[00:21:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:21:13] [SPEAKER_02]: And because of that, I was expecting Magic the Gathering,

[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_02]: but then they brought in setting like in Yu-Gi-Oh!

[00:21:20] [SPEAKER_02]: and using monsters as energy like dual masters and Vanguard.

[00:21:25] [SPEAKER_02]: And they never explained just the base rules,

[00:21:29] [SPEAKER_02]: which you need for those hype moments.

[00:21:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Like in order to know why someone assembling Exodia is cool,

[00:21:35] [SPEAKER_02]: you need to tell them, oh, because if you get all of them, it's an auto win.

[00:21:38] [SPEAKER_02]: And they never really did that.

[00:21:40] [SPEAKER_02]: And I actually made a note of it.

[00:21:41] [SPEAKER_02]: They didn't explain the whole monsters as crystals or whatever mechanic

[00:21:46] [SPEAKER_02]: until chapter nine, just under halfway through the series.

[00:21:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. Well, that her like big dual where she gets all the points,

[00:21:54] [SPEAKER_04]: they never actually explain how the game works.

[00:21:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, here's the thing is I said before,

[00:21:58] [SPEAKER_04]: I maybe I feel more frustrated than you, Jordan,

[00:22:00] [SPEAKER_04]: because I understand what competitive magic is like.

[00:22:03] [SPEAKER_04]: And I can tell how she didn't do her homework.

[00:22:05] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like if someone came in and made like a manga about a metal band

[00:22:08] [SPEAKER_04]: and everything was like they just read a Wikipedia page,

[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_04]: you would probably be pretty pissed too.

[00:22:12] [SPEAKER_03]: No, David. No, no.

[00:22:14] [SPEAKER_03]: What you're what you're describing is my reaction to the Doctor Who episode

[00:22:17] [SPEAKER_03]: that was about music, where they just stated all this complete bullshit

[00:22:21] [SPEAKER_03]: about music theory and chords that was just absolute trash

[00:22:25] [SPEAKER_03]: and made me really fucking mad. So I know what you mean. Yeah.

[00:22:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. It's like so for instance, something that stood out to me

[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_04]: is well, first there was a sleeve thing where she was like

[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_04]: she must be such casual.

[00:22:35] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like obviously everyone who's playing competitively use of sleeves.

[00:22:38] [SPEAKER_04]: But our thing was she had a character say,

[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_04]: oh, I changed my deck for day two to be better against a wider range of decks.

[00:22:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Like inherently day two would mean that you would have less diversity

[00:22:48] [SPEAKER_04]: because a, you're playing against less people. Yeah.

[00:22:50] [SPEAKER_04]: And there's going to be less types of decks

[00:22:52] [SPEAKER_04]: that are able to compete competitively.

[00:22:54] [SPEAKER_04]: So naturally it's going to be self selected.

[00:22:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Doesn't make sense with how professional magic tournaments would work.

[00:22:59] [SPEAKER_02]: But you want to be more and more specific as time goes on.

[00:23:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Like you can you want the wide array at the beginning

[00:23:04] [SPEAKER_02]: because last thing you need is one chump rogue deck to get a good top

[00:23:08] [SPEAKER_02]: deck on you and knock you out of the tournament.

[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_02]: But once you get past that variety,

[00:23:12] [SPEAKER_02]: you know, once you get into the top 64, top 16,

[00:23:15] [SPEAKER_02]: there's probably only going to be four to six different decks.

[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's also like I don't think she really understood

[00:23:22] [SPEAKER_04]: that competitive magic is a Swiss system.

[00:23:24] [SPEAKER_04]: And it was really annoying also that she never lost

[00:23:26] [SPEAKER_04]: because in a Swiss system, you can lose.

[00:23:28] [SPEAKER_04]: You can probably lose once or twice and make day two

[00:23:31] [SPEAKER_04]: if it's a big enough tournament, which this looked like

[00:23:32] [SPEAKER_04]: if given the prize was like twenty thousand dollars or something.

[00:23:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. Yeah. It was massive.

[00:23:37] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like, does she not know like she had people still competing?

[00:23:40] [SPEAKER_04]: But it's like you can play and it was needed.

[00:23:43] [SPEAKER_04]: She needed to lose a match.

[00:23:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. And it would have been completely fine.

[00:23:46] [SPEAKER_04]: You can go X one and day two most tournaments.

[00:23:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Right. I think the main thing that we've got a great

[00:23:51] [SPEAKER_02]: and it comes down to the believability.

[00:23:53] [SPEAKER_02]: If you're if they wanted to do their own game or do an homage to magic,

[00:23:56] [SPEAKER_02]: you need us to believe that this game is so beloved

[00:24:01] [SPEAKER_02]: and is so solid that it makes everyone want to play it.

[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_02]: But it felt so messy.

[00:24:07] [SPEAKER_02]: And even if I wasn't big into card games, which I have boxes and boxes

[00:24:11] [SPEAKER_02]: of yugos and magic cards, like it still just doesn't feel like a game.

[00:24:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Like when you watch yugioh, even if you don't necessarily know what's

[00:24:18] [SPEAKER_02]: happening between the dramatic monologues and all the energy they put around it,

[00:24:23] [SPEAKER_02]: it sucks you in and it teaches you the basics once you get to battle city.

[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_03]: So here's the thing on one hand,

[00:24:29] [SPEAKER_03]: I kind of feel like the point of the manga was not the game itself,

[00:24:34] [SPEAKER_03]: but like kind of the things around the game.

[00:24:36] [SPEAKER_03]: But at the same time, I can agree with that.

[00:24:38] [SPEAKER_03]: That's still a significant portion of of like the manga.

[00:24:43] [SPEAKER_03]: It reminds me of Cypher Academy a little bit where Cypher Academy's issue.

[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_03]: What is that?

[00:24:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Like you can listen to our review of it on the Patreon.

[00:24:51] [SPEAKER_03]: But basically there's a part of it that I genuinely like.

[00:24:56] [SPEAKER_03]: But the majority of it is just complete, skippable, unreadable trash.

[00:25:01] [SPEAKER_03]: And like this, I wouldn't say it's to that level.

[00:25:05] [SPEAKER_03]: But still, when they're having the card game, a lot of the time,

[00:25:09] [SPEAKER_03]: my eyes just kind of skim over it and it's like I draw this card and it's like,

[00:25:14] [SPEAKER_03]: well, OK, I don't fully understand what that does.

[00:25:17] [SPEAKER_02]: But like, OK, half the the the duels aren't shown.

[00:25:22] [SPEAKER_02]: They show them playing like two cards and then they cut to everyone

[00:25:25] [SPEAKER_02]: watching it and you read the captions of the big screen of everything

[00:25:28] [SPEAKER_02]: that's happening while you're not watching.

[00:25:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's kind of show don't tell by necessity sort of.

[00:25:36] [SPEAKER_03]: You know what I mean?

[00:25:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, yeah, it's just also since you don't really explain the game,

[00:25:39] [SPEAKER_04]: you don't really know like how close it is because almost every game was like

[00:25:43] [SPEAKER_04]: she just locked them down and that was like it.

[00:25:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Like she pretty much wins the exact same time every single game.

[00:25:49] [SPEAKER_03]: It's sort of in some ways it reminded me of the game

[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_03]: that like Komugi and Meruem play in the Kamera arc.

[00:25:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we're like you don't know what the fuck the game is,

[00:25:58] [SPEAKER_03]: except not done as well.

[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Basically, yeah, but also that the 100 hundred isn't about it.

[00:26:05] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, the better comparison is Green Island,

[00:26:07] [SPEAKER_04]: which had a very robust explanation and well thought out of the game works.

[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_03]: I was going to say Green Island,

[00:26:12] [SPEAKER_03]: but I understand how Green Island works a lot more.

[00:26:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Jordan was like, oh, what's the closest

[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_04]: comparison to an arc and fall to a card game arc?

[00:26:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, Khmeri and also again,

[00:26:24] [SPEAKER_04]: like the characters aren't that interesting.

[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_04]: They're hung around, which is great.

[00:26:27] [SPEAKER_04]: But the fact that there's really only one character to talk about in a 22

[00:26:29] [SPEAKER_04]: manga series, there was a lot of characters that show up

[00:26:33] [SPEAKER_04]: and then just aren't really that interesting, you know?

[00:26:35] [SPEAKER_03]: This was the Monica show kind of and people reacting to Monica.

[00:26:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Like so you're saying it's just Monica.

[00:26:42] [SPEAKER_04]: That's a DDLC reference.

[00:26:44] [SPEAKER_04]: DDLC, Doki Doki Literature Club.

[00:26:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Right. OK.

[00:26:48] [SPEAKER_04]: There's got to be some people listening, doing the fucking point meme.

[00:26:51] [SPEAKER_03]: No, I understand what you're talking about now.

[00:26:54] [SPEAKER_03]: It just, yeah, anyway, it was very much

[00:26:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Monaco was entirely like the thing was based around.

[00:27:01] [SPEAKER_03]: But like, yeah, there weren't really many supporting characters.

[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, there were a bunch of supporting characters,

[00:27:07] [SPEAKER_03]: but none that we're really like focused on in the same one.

[00:27:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. And we got one chapter of them

[00:27:12] [SPEAKER_02]: set of them trying to crack the code that is the main character

[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_02]: only to get shut down.

[00:27:18] [SPEAKER_02]: It kind of it really felt like they tried to put in the different

[00:27:23] [SPEAKER_02]: player types as each character.

[00:27:25] [SPEAKER_02]: So that way, if you didn't like the main character,

[00:27:27] [SPEAKER_02]: you might get attached to one of the side ones because I got

[00:27:30] [SPEAKER_02]: somewhat attached to Roman.

[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I love the fact that she just plays the deck she likes.

[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I loved Roman.

[00:27:35] [SPEAKER_03]: She was. Yeah, I loved Roman.

[00:27:36] [SPEAKER_03]: She was great.

[00:27:37] [SPEAKER_03]: She was just like that.

[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I would have run an exodia deck, motherfucker.

[00:27:41] [SPEAKER_02]: And I like how they don't even just reference exodia,

[00:27:44] [SPEAKER_02]: but they reference in this world that there's a deck

[00:27:46] [SPEAKER_02]: where if you get seven cards,

[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_02]: you automatically win.

[00:27:49] [SPEAKER_02]: And if you look, the cards are just the dragon balls.

[00:27:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's great.

[00:27:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Really? No, we're talking about positives.

[00:27:57] [SPEAKER_04]: We can't do that yet.

[00:27:57] [SPEAKER_04]: We'll be there in a minute.

[00:27:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Awesome. Oh, man.

[00:28:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Also, how did you guys feel about the art?

[00:28:01] [SPEAKER_04]: I thought the art was just kind of very gets the job done.

[00:28:04] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like a workhorse art.

[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, the art was cute.

[00:28:07] [SPEAKER_03]: It was what it needed to be,

[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_03]: although I don't know sometimes it didn't work.

[00:28:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I thought that like the dark shadows over people's faces

[00:28:14] [SPEAKER_03]: like in some ways they look good.

[00:28:16] [SPEAKER_03]: In other ways, they look kind of awkward the way that it was.

[00:28:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, just like me.

[00:28:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, also, holy shit, this entire mug is one tournament arc.

[00:28:26] [SPEAKER_04]: There's nothing else fucking happens except she goes.

[00:28:28] [SPEAKER_04]: She meets an opponent.

[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_04]: There's maybe an interesting fun fact.

[00:28:31] [SPEAKER_04]: They have a game and then she kind of just wins

[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_04]: because the game doesn't really explain itself or make the matches

[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_04]: interesting. So it always has to be like a super crazy 180.

[00:28:38] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, I outsmarted your 500 IQ

[00:28:41] [SPEAKER_04]: because she can't really make an individual

[00:28:42] [SPEAKER_04]: beat by beat match interesting.

[00:28:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know how this manga would have kept going.

[00:28:46] [SPEAKER_03]: No, me neither.

[00:28:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I think this this manga needed to end when it did.

[00:28:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I guess maybe the next arc would have just

[00:28:53] [SPEAKER_03]: there would have had to have been a big shift,

[00:28:55] [SPEAKER_03]: at least in how Monica was.

[00:28:57] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, but why don't we I think we're right

[00:28:59] [SPEAKER_04]: and start talking about our section,

[00:29:01] [SPEAKER_04]: says everyone cool if we go into what it did well.

[00:29:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[00:29:03] [SPEAKER_04]: So I know we talked about a little bit in why it failed,

[00:29:05] [SPEAKER_04]: but Jordan, really you have said you actually quite like the series.

[00:29:07] [SPEAKER_04]: So what are the things that really you enjoyed the most?

[00:29:10] [SPEAKER_03]: So as I said, I really like Monaca's like traumatic back story.

[00:29:15] [SPEAKER_03]: I thought that was like really interesting.

[00:29:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. And it was also like I really thought it was like compelling

[00:29:20] [SPEAKER_03]: how like this is not really a series about a card game.

[00:29:24] [SPEAKER_03]: This is a series about a girl learning to rise above her trauma

[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_03]: and kind of reclaim this thing that like she's good at,

[00:29:32] [SPEAKER_03]: but like that has been kind of taken from her due to trauma.

[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I thought that was like really interesting.

[00:29:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Like whenever Monica is like super dark and just miserable,

[00:29:43] [SPEAKER_03]: like she is you can just feel it like the author does an incredible

[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_03]: job of just making you feel this intense misery

[00:29:51] [SPEAKER_03]: and just emotionlessness.

[00:29:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Those black text boxes, man.

[00:29:55] [SPEAKER_03]: The black text boxes, the blank stare.

[00:29:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And then it contrasts immediately with her when she's not playing the game

[00:30:02] [SPEAKER_03]: and she's like much more like positive and like much more normal

[00:30:06] [SPEAKER_03]: and like just kind of acting like middle school girl.

[00:30:09] [SPEAKER_04]: So would you say that she's middle school girl

[00:30:10] [SPEAKER_04]: that has some sort of alternative personality where she can play a card game?

[00:30:14] [SPEAKER_04]: She's always not that great at it, a very high level.

[00:30:16] [SPEAKER_03]: No, because she's great at it.

[00:30:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Were you comparing it to something, David? Yes.

[00:30:20] [SPEAKER_03]: What were you comparing it to? Yu-Gi-Oh. Yes. Oh, yeah.

[00:30:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Right. I got thrown off because I'm like,

[00:30:26] [SPEAKER_03]: you he's not a teenage girl.

[00:30:27] [SPEAKER_03]: But besides that, I understand what you said.

[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_04]: No, it's fine.

[00:30:32] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't think that's a sincere ripoff.

[00:30:34] [SPEAKER_02]: No, not at all.

[00:30:36] [SPEAKER_02]: I kind of got weirdly that dynamic as well

[00:30:38] [SPEAKER_02]: with kind of what felt like an alternate personality

[00:30:41] [SPEAKER_02]: that I feel really came out when her not boyfriend got insulted

[00:30:46] [SPEAKER_02]: and then she just officially let it all out.

[00:30:49] [SPEAKER_02]: So that mix with some of the mechanics that we talked about earlier

[00:30:52] [SPEAKER_02]: makes me kind of think that a little bit more of some other card games

[00:30:55] [SPEAKER_02]: and other card anime and manga were slipped in.

[00:30:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I mean, you know, this definitely has influences.

[00:31:01] [SPEAKER_03]: But like what I think is interesting is this almost feels like

[00:31:04] [SPEAKER_03]: well, what if the real world did the Yu-Gi-Oh thing

[00:31:07] [SPEAKER_03]: where like everything was based around the card game?

[00:31:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Would that actually be like it's almost like a parody of Yu-Gi-Oh?

[00:31:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Like except without like the hologram technology.

[00:31:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Like what would it be like if it was actually just people playing cards?

[00:31:22] [SPEAKER_04]: I've been wanting to read the manga for Yu-Gi-Oh

[00:31:24] [SPEAKER_04]: and apparently they don't have the hologram stuff in Duelist Kingdom.

[00:31:27] [SPEAKER_04]: They just sit at a table and play.

[00:31:29] [SPEAKER_02]: What? The manga goes completely off.

[00:31:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Like the anime is almost nothing like the manga.

[00:31:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Like you'll find like some stuff that lines up,

[00:31:39] [SPEAKER_02]: but you have to get through the Yu-Gi-Oh Zero stuff first where...

[00:31:42] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah, I'm not even talking Yu-Gi-Oh Zero.

[00:31:44] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm talking like I'm talking about Yu-Gi-Oh Manga Duelist Kingdom.

[00:31:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh no, I've read Yu-Gi-Oh Season Zero.

[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I know where it's like they didn't even have the card game

[00:31:53] [SPEAKER_03]: until like most of the way in.

[00:31:55] [SPEAKER_03]: And the card game is called Magic and Wizards.

[00:31:57] [SPEAKER_04]: So they were not so great.

[00:31:59] [SPEAKER_04]: So I guess the wizard and this is probably an homage to that.

[00:32:02] [SPEAKER_04]: There's your fun fact.

[00:32:04] [SPEAKER_04]: And as I said before, I do appreciate that the opponent she defeats stick around.

[00:32:08] [SPEAKER_04]: They didn't really talk about it, but it is a tournament with a round robin system.

[00:32:10] [SPEAKER_04]: So they were still playing.

[00:32:11] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's just nice that they didn't despawn, you know?

[00:32:14] [SPEAKER_03]: And I also like how one of the reasons she hates playing is

[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_03]: like she hates playing to win basically

[00:32:21] [SPEAKER_03]: because the way that she knows how to play to win

[00:32:23] [SPEAKER_03]: is to play this style that she knows everyone fucking hates to play against.

[00:32:29] [SPEAKER_03]: And so she's convinced that everyone she plays against is going to fucking hate her.

[00:32:33] [SPEAKER_03]: But after she beats them and people are like, nah, we still like you.

[00:32:38] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like what?

[00:32:39] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's like kind of sweet to see her like realize, oh,

[00:32:42] [SPEAKER_03]: like I don't destroy friendships this way.

[00:32:44] [SPEAKER_02]: That's that's nice.

[00:32:45] [SPEAKER_02]: That was something else I really enjoyed too.

[00:32:48] [SPEAKER_02]: That actually kind of struck a chord with me.

[00:32:50] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm one of those people that when I get into something,

[00:32:52] [SPEAKER_02]: I kind of become a hardcore casual where so when I got some

[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_02]: of my friends got into playing like Yu-Gi-Oh master duel and Magic Arena

[00:33:00] [SPEAKER_02]: and I had all my prebuilt decks and they weren't have

[00:33:03] [SPEAKER_02]: and I was worried they wouldn't have fun with it.

[00:33:05] [SPEAKER_02]: So I have like half my decks are for climbing the ladder and grinding.

[00:33:09] [SPEAKER_02]: And the other half are just for fun ones

[00:33:11] [SPEAKER_02]: because I was worried they wouldn't want to play anymore.

[00:33:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I had that issue too.

[00:33:14] [SPEAKER_04]: I have some commander decks that I don't play if I'm trying to have fun.

[00:33:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Also, can I just say the match and then like the call back to the match,

[00:33:23] [SPEAKER_03]: like the match where she just goes for 20 rounds attacking.

[00:33:27] [SPEAKER_03]: That was great.

[00:33:28] [SPEAKER_03]: That was amazing. That was beautiful.

[00:33:31] [SPEAKER_04]: But that was like one of the only times I really changed the formula.

[00:33:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I kind of agree with you, but like that moment was like really good.

[00:33:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Basically what happens is it does an amazing job of showing

[00:33:41] [SPEAKER_03]: how her deck sucks to play against, but that it's really strong.

[00:33:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Where basically she gets her opponent into a loop

[00:33:49] [SPEAKER_03]: where her opponent can do nothing and it's her turn again.

[00:33:53] [SPEAKER_03]: And she attacks their life points for like a little bit of damage at a time.

[00:33:57] [SPEAKER_03]: And then it just repeats over and over and over again

[00:34:00] [SPEAKER_03]: until like it's the most boring game you can possibly play against.

[00:34:04] [SPEAKER_03]: And so there's just one page with the same panel repeated like 20 times.

[00:34:09] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's amazing.

[00:34:10] [SPEAKER_02]: That was one of my favorite things because it displayed the monotony so well.

[00:34:16] [SPEAKER_02]: It did a great job.

[00:34:17] [SPEAKER_02]: And a matter of fact, it was it was just like 500.

[00:34:20] [SPEAKER_02]: No, 500.

[00:34:21] [SPEAKER_02]: No, 500.

[00:34:22] [SPEAKER_02]: No, for like a page and a half.

[00:34:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it was just so good.

[00:34:26] [SPEAKER_04]: I loved it. And you know what else?

[00:34:27] [SPEAKER_04]: I love talking about where could have gone to show again to that.

[00:34:30] [SPEAKER_04]: So, Zach, what would you say something you would have revised

[00:34:32] [SPEAKER_04]: about the series to have made it more successful?

[00:34:33] [SPEAKER_02]: So I think the first thing I would have revised is

[00:34:36] [SPEAKER_02]: I would have kind of put the game a little bit more to the forefront

[00:34:40] [SPEAKER_02]: because as it stands right now, it felt like it was a romance

[00:34:44] [SPEAKER_02]: that they just happened to put a card game in.

[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_02]: And obviously they should have put the romance first in forefront.

[00:34:49] [SPEAKER_02]: But I think leaning into the card game a little bit more,

[00:34:52] [SPEAKER_02]: like maybe have if it went a little longer,

[00:34:55] [SPEAKER_02]: have the have the two characters go on a date

[00:34:57] [SPEAKER_02]: where they try not to talk about the card game

[00:35:01] [SPEAKER_02]: or where they try to or like

[00:35:02] [SPEAKER_02]: but it just ultimately ends with them

[00:35:05] [SPEAKER_02]: like playing in or in the middle of a busy restaurant

[00:35:08] [SPEAKER_02]: to see who pays for the bill or something.

[00:35:10] [SPEAKER_02]: I think there would have been a lot of really fun and cute ways

[00:35:12] [SPEAKER_02]: to integrate that.

[00:35:14] [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's really the biggest thing I would do is just

[00:35:18] [SPEAKER_02]: I think the balancing of the card game to the romance

[00:35:20] [SPEAKER_02]: needs to be put a little bit more.

[00:35:22] [SPEAKER_02]: And then I would have cranked up the comedy a little bit more

[00:35:25] [SPEAKER_02]: like we talked about with the chip, five hundred chip, five hundred chip,

[00:35:28] [SPEAKER_02]: five hundred.

[00:35:29] [SPEAKER_02]: I think a little more things like that to just add some character

[00:35:32] [SPEAKER_02]: to the matches and to the players would have gone such a long way.

[00:35:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I completely agree.

[00:35:38] [SPEAKER_04]: I also think it would have been better if the game wasn't

[00:35:40] [SPEAKER_04]: so blatantly or brisk in of magic

[00:35:42] [SPEAKER_04]: and then she kind of duct tapes weird rules to it.

[00:35:45] [SPEAKER_03]: See, here's the thing.

[00:35:46] [SPEAKER_03]: It either needed to be less like magic

[00:35:48] [SPEAKER_03]: or it needed to be literally magic to gather.

[00:35:51] [SPEAKER_04]: There is already a romance magic

[00:35:54] [SPEAKER_04]: of gathering manga though, really?

[00:35:56] [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's actually getting an anime next year.

[00:35:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, we actually are guest.

[00:36:00] [SPEAKER_04]: David Evelyn is the official translator on it.

[00:36:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Whoa. So yeah.

[00:36:05] [SPEAKER_04]: So that also may be that I know exactly what I want to have

[00:36:08] [SPEAKER_04]: the series in our existence.

[00:36:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I feel like the alternative to it just being magic, though,

[00:36:13] [SPEAKER_03]: is it had to do something that like, you know, a good example

[00:36:16] [SPEAKER_03]: is Double Tai say where I don't know shit about Shogi, but they don't care

[00:36:20] [SPEAKER_03]: if you know anything about Shogi in that manga.

[00:36:22] [SPEAKER_03]: They don't give a fuck if you know anything like again,

[00:36:24] [SPEAKER_03]: the thing where it was like five hundred, five hundred, five hundred

[00:36:27] [SPEAKER_03]: that did an amazing job of showing it.

[00:36:29] [SPEAKER_03]: And there was like one or two other times

[00:36:31] [SPEAKER_03]: where you really understood it like the exodia one where it was just like,

[00:36:35] [SPEAKER_03]: oh, she just did her into her own strategy against her,

[00:36:39] [SPEAKER_03]: like just this total reverse.

[00:36:41] [SPEAKER_03]: I felt like that one was done pretty well.

[00:36:43] [SPEAKER_03]: But like, yeah, generally speaking,

[00:36:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I feel like I didn't understand what was fully happening.

[00:36:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I and this manga needed to do like a better job of that

[00:36:51] [SPEAKER_03]: because in those moments it was like the five hundred, five hundred

[00:36:55] [SPEAKER_03]: was like the best example of showing not telling.

[00:36:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. Imagine if it had been magic where so they just took magic

[00:37:00] [SPEAKER_04]: stats and multiply them by five hundred.

[00:37:02] [SPEAKER_04]: So it would have been just one damage, one damage.

[00:37:05] [SPEAKER_04]: So I think that would have been really cool.

[00:37:07] [SPEAKER_04]: I also feel like they didn't really talk much about her father's debt.

[00:37:10] [SPEAKER_04]: I really wanted her to have to have like a life or death match against

[00:37:13] [SPEAKER_04]: like a Yakuza guy and he loses a finger every time he like loses a match.

[00:37:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, you know, it's like just crazy shit.

[00:37:19] [SPEAKER_04]: She wins game one and cuts his pinky off or something.

[00:37:22] [SPEAKER_04]: You're basically saying you wanted the manga to be crazier.

[00:37:24] [SPEAKER_04]: It just felt boring, man.

[00:37:26] [SPEAKER_04]: They're living in a fucking world where everything is about card games,

[00:37:28] [SPEAKER_04]: but it's so uninteresting.

[00:37:30] [SPEAKER_02]: You bring that up and I just had a thought like because they even talked

[00:37:33] [SPEAKER_02]: about like the fake rare scam at the beginning, like do something with that.

[00:37:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Like have like a back alley deal where someone says show me the goods and they

[00:37:41] [SPEAKER_02]: open and it's all counterfeit secret rares or something.

[00:37:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I wanted to do as like that was well, that wasn't Yu-Gi-Oh!

[00:37:47] [SPEAKER_04]: too, but they're like just fake cars and shit.

[00:37:49] [SPEAKER_03]: It would have been nice to it for it to not be a tournament.

[00:37:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that was so boring.

[00:37:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it wasn't really doing much with the setting.

[00:37:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, like because then it's just a magic tournament.

[00:38:00] [SPEAKER_03]: We have those in real life.

[00:38:01] [SPEAKER_03]: OK, like it's kind of like I don't see why the whole world had

[00:38:04] [SPEAKER_03]: to revolve around magic, the gathering for you to have a magic tournament.

[00:38:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's just I felt this was overall a draft away where she just

[00:38:14] [SPEAKER_04]: needed an editor to sit with her.

[00:38:15] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like she didn't put this in the oven long enough before she started the series.

[00:38:19] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's fair.

[00:38:20] [SPEAKER_04]: And you can tell that because she didn't really have a plot.

[00:38:22] [SPEAKER_04]: She didn't really think about she didn't make the game mechanics

[00:38:24] [SPEAKER_04]: when she started, obviously, you know, yeah, draft.

[00:38:26] [SPEAKER_04]: There you go. That's another magic word.

[00:38:28] [SPEAKER_04]: So let's give Miss Lenox thoughts of why don't we get into that?

[00:38:31] [SPEAKER_04]: So a plot element I thought was going to happen is there's

[00:38:33] [SPEAKER_04]: actually a very famous case of a magic card that used to be worth absolutely

[00:38:36] [SPEAKER_04]: garbage and it's now worth hundreds of dollars.

[00:38:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Like people use this bookmarks.

[00:38:40] [SPEAKER_04]: It was just in the garbage and that card I'm going to pause and people will guess

[00:38:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Lion's Eye Diamond, Bulk Rare, some other cards came out and it just blew up.

[00:38:47] [SPEAKER_04]: I think there might have also been a rule change

[00:38:49] [SPEAKER_04]: and it just became one of the most valuable cards.

[00:38:51] [SPEAKER_04]: So I kind of thought maybe that was going to be like the happy ending

[00:38:53] [SPEAKER_04]: where he actually was right and a card did come out that made his like

[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_04]: Bulk Rare worth like 100 times what he bought it for.

[00:39:00] [SPEAKER_04]: I thought that actually feel like that would have been a fun cheesy.

[00:39:03] [SPEAKER_04]: That's kind of like what you would see in a Hallmark movie.

[00:39:05] [SPEAKER_04]: So now I kind of want to see a Hallmark movie about magic gathering.

[00:39:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, that'd be great.

[00:39:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Actually, wait, what's the name of that card of Lions Eye Diamond?

[00:39:14] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh my God.

[00:39:15] [SPEAKER_04]: And then also another thing is that control and swing of one creature

[00:39:18] [SPEAKER_04]: just over a ton of turns is probably a reference to the deck.

[00:39:21] [SPEAKER_04]: As I talked about in the chibi, Zach, are you familiar with what the deck is?

[00:39:25] [SPEAKER_04]: I am not. Is that Yadalok? No.

[00:39:28] [SPEAKER_04]: I know Yadalok is the Yu-Gi-Oh equivalent magic gathering

[00:39:31] [SPEAKER_04]: to invent these concepts.

[00:39:32] [SPEAKER_04]: So literally someone invented the idea of a control deck

[00:39:35] [SPEAKER_04]: and it was the first of its kind that people just called it the deck

[00:39:38] [SPEAKER_04]: where you just play counter spells and destruction.

[00:39:40] [SPEAKER_04]: And then you just swung with one creature about five times in one

[00:39:43] [SPEAKER_04]: or four times because it's a five five.

[00:39:45] [SPEAKER_04]: So I just thought that's fun.

[00:39:46] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's like it's weird how what she knew to reference

[00:39:49] [SPEAKER_04]: but then had really big gaps.

[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's like very strange who she talked to, especially because

[00:39:54] [SPEAKER_04]: a lot of these references are from early magic,

[00:39:56] [SPEAKER_04]: but this came out like 2015 and there was like absolutely no references

[00:40:00] [SPEAKER_04]: to the state of what the game was like at the time this came out.

[00:40:03] [SPEAKER_03]: It seems like she kind of alluded to this that like the people she was

[00:40:06] [SPEAKER_03]: getting a research one from were like magic players who

[00:40:10] [SPEAKER_03]: not as into the game as they used to be, you know what I mean?

[00:40:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Like like how if you've talked to me about Yu-Gi-Oh, I'd be like,

[00:40:17] [SPEAKER_03]: ah, Summon Skull, that's a good card, right?

[00:40:20] [SPEAKER_03]: So that doesn't shock me at all that this is like early magic, basically.

[00:40:25] [SPEAKER_02]: I found some of the cards that they created kind of fascinating

[00:40:30] [SPEAKER_02]: because some of them, I'm sure there is equivalent to the real life version

[00:40:34] [SPEAKER_02]: in Magic the Gathering, but some of them just felt so broken.

[00:40:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Like there was that one card she used all the time called Fog of War.

[00:40:41] [SPEAKER_02]: And depending on how it was drawn, it looked like it would have been

[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_02]: about like three to five mana.

[00:40:45] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's the thing that let them steal all of their monsters,

[00:40:49] [SPEAKER_02]: immediately get their own battle phase, attack with them

[00:40:52] [SPEAKER_02]: and then wipe the board with all the attacking monsters.

[00:40:54] [SPEAKER_02]: That feels so broken.

[00:40:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then everybody was like, why is she using that garbage card?

[00:41:00] [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, how is that bad?

[00:41:01] [SPEAKER_03]: That seems like a really good card.

[00:41:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, her cards were very situational.

[00:41:05] [SPEAKER_04]: That's fair.

[00:41:05] [SPEAKER_04]: There have been decks like that, like Amulet Titan or actually

[00:41:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Eldrazi Winner where there are just cards that are just look like

[00:41:11] [SPEAKER_04]: a pile of cards. Oh, eggs.

[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Just there was a deck called Eggs.

[00:41:15] [SPEAKER_04]: I won't go into it, but essentially a lot of posts on Reddit

[00:41:17] [SPEAKER_04]: were how does this deck win?

[00:41:18] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a kind of you just jerk off for about 10 minutes

[00:41:20] [SPEAKER_04]: and then you win.

[00:41:21] [SPEAKER_04]: And they actually banned the cards not because they were overpowered,

[00:41:23] [SPEAKER_04]: but because it was such a miserable experience where there was

[00:41:26] [SPEAKER_04]: like a notable tournament where one guy said, I just have no

[00:41:28] [SPEAKER_04]: response to anything he does.

[00:41:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Tell me when he's ends his turn and he left to go the bathroom

[00:41:33] [SPEAKER_04]: mid like and this was like in like a top 16 match that was like being televised.

[00:41:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Those are some of the best when you tune it.

[00:41:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not sure, like just kind of get to you, give a little bit.

[00:41:43] [SPEAKER_02]: I feel like years ago, there's this player, his name is Jesse Cotton

[00:41:46] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's considered like one of the greats.

[00:41:48] [SPEAKER_02]: He's won multiple YCS sort of it.

[00:41:50] [SPEAKER_02]: And they put him in a feature stream match up against

[00:41:52] [SPEAKER_02]: like a 10 year old kid.

[00:41:54] [SPEAKER_02]: And I think if I remember right, I think the rules are you're not allowed

[00:41:58] [SPEAKER_02]: to scoop on a streamed event.

[00:42:01] [SPEAKER_02]: What?

[00:42:01] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what scooping means.

[00:42:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Pick up all your cards and you give up.

[00:42:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Like you're done.

[00:42:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. Yeah.

[00:42:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Like you basically give up and say, OK, go next game.

[00:42:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh.

[00:42:09] [SPEAKER_02]: But so because you're not allowed to do that on a featured streamed match,

[00:42:12] [SPEAKER_02]: it's just this grown man like full on.

[00:42:15] [SPEAKER_02]: I think he's won like two or three tournaments at this point,

[00:42:18] [SPEAKER_02]: just powering and flexing on this 10 year old kid.

[00:42:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I thought you were going to say the kid like kid one, but no.

[00:42:29] [SPEAKER_04]: No, no, no.

[00:42:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, by the way, my story, what's even better is the guy wrote

[00:42:33] [SPEAKER_04]: when you play Magic Out of there online, there's a button that means auto concede,

[00:42:37] [SPEAKER_04]: like auto like give up or not like surrender, but just let your point do whatever.

[00:42:41] [SPEAKER_04]: He wrote that on like a sticky note and just put it on his chair on like his chair and left.

[00:42:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Also, I want to say Persephone, which was like her really big card.

[00:42:49] [SPEAKER_04]: I feel like it changed effects mid match because at first it seemed like it brings

[00:42:53] [SPEAKER_04]: the creature back to its owner's control, which is why her combo works.

[00:42:57] [SPEAKER_04]: But then later she steals a creature with it.

[00:42:59] [SPEAKER_04]: And the first lady was like, I don't need to care about what's in my graveyard.

[00:43:02] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, so it's like, I don't know, maybe I misunderstood,

[00:43:05] [SPEAKER_04]: but it seemed like the offer legitimately changed the effect of that card meant game

[00:43:08] [SPEAKER_03]: kind of glazed over what the cards did sometimes.

[00:43:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I was just like, did I was it?

[00:43:14] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. Oh, and my final is also they had to explain why someone might mirror

[00:43:18] [SPEAKER_04]: a face mask because they're sick and I'm like, oh, how things 2015 was such a simpler time.

[00:43:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Did you guys have any armistice?

[00:43:26] [SPEAKER_04]: Should I get in a maxi bees?

[00:43:28] [SPEAKER_02]: The only one that I want to point out real quick is I loved the little

[00:43:31] [SPEAKER_02]: tournament cards that they gave for everyone that had their stats.

[00:43:34] [SPEAKER_02]: And one of the stats was a deck price.

[00:43:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not sure if you saw that.

[00:43:38] [SPEAKER_02]: And there's like some characters where the deck price was like maxed out.

[00:43:42] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, no, I didn't see that. That's great.

[00:43:43] [SPEAKER_04]: I did see there was a car that was infinity, infinity as a stats,

[00:43:46] [SPEAKER_04]: which never came up. So I'm not quite sure why they put that in.

[00:43:49] [SPEAKER_04]: That's weird to put that in and then not do anything with that.

[00:43:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. But now let's get into some maxi bee fun facts.

[00:43:54] [SPEAKER_04]: They said, I cannot stress enough that this author's name is Aki Starita,

[00:43:58] [SPEAKER_04]: a fully filled out five point star is not asterisk is not open star.

[00:44:02] [SPEAKER_04]: It is considered misspelling their name if you do not use that explicit character.

[00:44:08] [SPEAKER_04]: You do not need me to tell you wizard souls heavily based on magic

[00:44:11] [SPEAKER_04]: gathering. And if you squint, you can apply game knowledge.

[00:44:13] [SPEAKER_04]: And they want to say that they used to play Grixas that similar

[00:44:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Makas, but they don't play anymore.

[00:44:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Rare cards, games as depicted in the manga aren't far from reality

[00:44:20] [SPEAKER_04]: where people often speculate on one increase in value.

[00:44:23] [SPEAKER_04]: And the offer between chapters make it clear magic

[00:44:25] [SPEAKER_04]: isn't the only card game inspired wizard soul as was Prince of Tennis card game

[00:44:29] [SPEAKER_04]: gets specific mention.

[00:44:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Huh? What? It's a bit different.

[00:44:33] [SPEAKER_04]: It's about playing a game of tennis crazy using your deck for players

[00:44:36] [SPEAKER_04]: and shots in a playmat for layout.

[00:44:38] [SPEAKER_04]: That actually sounds really interesting.

[00:44:40] [SPEAKER_04]: I want that really bad now.

[00:44:42] [SPEAKER_04]: I kind of want to play that. What?

[00:44:45] [SPEAKER_04]: That's so cool.

[00:44:46] [SPEAKER_04]: So they have a single official single player only PS2 video game

[00:44:50] [SPEAKER_04]: card hunter, so you try playing that, Jordan.

[00:44:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Wow. Yeah.

[00:44:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Notably, the art takes up a lot of space on the cards

[00:44:56] [SPEAKER_04]: because how pretty the boys are.

[00:44:58] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, that is the draw of Prince of Tennis.

[00:45:01] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, you know, fair enough.

[00:45:03] [SPEAKER_04]: All right. So why don't we get to final verdict?

[00:45:05] [SPEAKER_03]: How does that sound? Oh, real quick, another another miscellaneous

[00:45:07] [SPEAKER_03]: thought, I thought it was really funny how like instead of

[00:45:10] [SPEAKER_03]: like the heart of the cards, it was just misery.

[00:45:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I kind of stole that from Tucker's part of the cards.

[00:45:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Six word summary. So yeah, let's get into it.

[00:45:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Part of the cards starting with six word summaries

[00:45:21] [SPEAKER_04]: from our community. Tucker, the heart of the cards suffering.

[00:45:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, where did if I heard that one?

[00:45:26] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, no, it was.

[00:45:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. Maxi B said tap your manga right to left or Paladin

[00:45:31] [SPEAKER_04]: CG DCT cute girls doing car tournaments.

[00:45:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Blah, it's the drama of the cards.

[00:45:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Jimmy, what jokes think playing TCG does?

[00:45:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Dachar's in author cast.

[00:45:42] [SPEAKER_04]: The reader's interest descends.

[00:45:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Diego, true love is all about the cards.

[00:45:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Dude rocks should have been about the lesbians.

[00:45:48] [SPEAKER_04]: That's true.

[00:45:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Glamournac, you'll never be better than you.

[00:45:51] [SPEAKER_03]: You don't have a ghost of a chance.

[00:45:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Ghost of a chance.

[00:45:55] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, man, I wish we could get a little career.

[00:45:56] [SPEAKER_04]: That would have been so fun if we had a little caribou.

[00:45:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, God.

[00:46:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Gray Potter, each knows he's a real deadly sin.

[00:46:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Playing blue, correct.

[00:46:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Captain Clueless romance was exiled until last turn.

[00:46:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Lord Anubis, the two year curse strikes again.

[00:46:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Meru, shuffle Targon manga into its owner's library.

[00:46:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Portal man, heart.

[00:46:13] [SPEAKER_04]: My heart is in your cards.

[00:46:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Heart, those were heart emojis.

[00:46:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Very cute.

[00:46:16] [SPEAKER_04]: And I guess I don't count because I was still six words.

[00:46:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Redblade, sad bean learns to love again.

[00:46:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Wrestling Warhammer nerd as a blue player.

[00:46:22] [SPEAKER_04]: A limo counterspell.

[00:46:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Spubby, Monica could have.

[00:46:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Spubby, Monica really could have used ravioli tokens.

[00:46:30] [SPEAKER_04]: A shout out.

[00:46:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, man, I want my goblin dog spike cancel series.

[00:46:34] [SPEAKER_04]: It cannot be regenerated.

[00:46:35] [SPEAKER_04]: T. Wolfwood, the really, she knows a family since Mongo.

[00:46:38] [SPEAKER_04]: This is better.

[00:46:40] [SPEAKER_04]: She knows.

[00:46:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. And Thor's, you activated my sad card, Kyba.

[00:46:45] [SPEAKER_04]: My six word summary is Monica be draw pass and draw pass.

[00:46:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Nice. How are you, Jordan?

[00:46:50] [SPEAKER_04]: You've activated my trap card.

[00:46:52] [SPEAKER_04]: Trauma. Whoa.

[00:46:54] [SPEAKER_02]: And then how much is that the first one I have is

[00:46:57] [SPEAKER_02]: anyone want to play Neopets TCG instead?

[00:47:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Then even makes card fight Vanguard look good.

[00:47:04] [SPEAKER_02]: And then finally assembled the five pieces of Flop Zodia.

[00:47:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Flop Zodia is pretty good.

[00:47:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Flop Zodia is good.

[00:47:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I kind of like the first one because I forgot that there was a Neopets TCG.

[00:47:17] [SPEAKER_03]: They just rereleased it like two weeks ago.

[00:47:19] [SPEAKER_04]: I just saw an ad for it, actually.

[00:47:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I always forget that Neopets still exists.

[00:47:25] [SPEAKER_02]: No, my wife is super into Neopets right now.

[00:47:27] [SPEAKER_02]: We're literally what they're calling the Neopets Renaissance.

[00:47:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Ha, ha, ha.

[00:47:33] [SPEAKER_02]: It's in the hands of the original owners again.

[00:47:35] [SPEAKER_02]: They're like constantly trying to upgrade it,

[00:47:37] [SPEAKER_02]: but it still runs off the same like crappy code from like 2008.

[00:47:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, God. All right.

[00:47:46] [SPEAKER_04]: And then it's time, Jordan.

[00:47:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Are you calling this not a flop?

[00:47:48] [SPEAKER_04]: I wish. OK.

[00:47:50] [SPEAKER_04]: You were like, oh, this is going to be such an upset

[00:47:52] [SPEAKER_04]: and opinion between us.

[00:47:53] [SPEAKER_04]: I maintain that I really enjoyed this manga, but it's a flop.

[00:47:57] [SPEAKER_04]: All right. I agree.

[00:47:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Happy, Zach. Yeah, it's definitely a flop.

[00:48:00] [SPEAKER_02]: It's definitely doesn't go to like full on flop, but it's not certified.

[00:48:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Definitely not. Again, I really enjoyed it and I maintain that.

[00:48:08] [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, it's flop.

[00:48:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's not certified.

[00:48:11] [SPEAKER_04]: It's just kind of boring. Yeah. All right.

[00:48:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Sounds good to me.

[00:48:14] [SPEAKER_04]: So what should people check out instead?

[00:48:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Mine is just kind of lame, but fuck it.

[00:48:17] [SPEAKER_04]: We just read and destroy all humanity.

[00:48:19] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, I don't know what that is.

[00:48:21] [SPEAKER_04]: It's literally the manga I just talked about.

[00:48:23] [SPEAKER_04]: That's a map that's literally a magic, the Gathering Manga.

[00:48:25] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's set in like 1998 and it's just people playing

[00:48:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Magic Gathering and it's about two teenagers falling in love.

[00:48:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, that's cute.

[00:48:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's literally what you would have wanted out of this manga.

[00:48:34] [SPEAKER_03]: How about you, Jordan?

[00:48:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Hey, you like card games?

[00:48:37] [SPEAKER_03]: They slay the spire.

[00:48:39] [SPEAKER_03]: I love slay the spire. Slay the spire.

[00:48:41] [SPEAKER_03]: I play it constantly.

[00:48:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Why am I not surprised? Constantly.

[00:48:46] [SPEAKER_02]: I played that for the first time like a week ago.

[00:48:48] [SPEAKER_02]: It's so good.

[00:48:49] [SPEAKER_02]: It's way too addicting.

[00:48:51] [SPEAKER_02]: I know I have over 2000 hours in it.

[00:48:55] [SPEAKER_02]: I can't get sucked into it.

[00:48:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Otherwise, I won't go to work.

[00:48:57] [SPEAKER_02]: You won't go to work.

[00:48:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Get it on your phone, then you'll be able to go to work.

[00:49:03] [SPEAKER_04]: And then, Zach, what is your recommendation?

[00:49:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Honestly, there is a YouTube channel

[00:49:07] [SPEAKER_02]: called Tolarian Community College.

[00:49:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah, the professor.

[00:49:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, watch the professor.

[00:49:12] [SPEAKER_02]: He does.

[00:49:13] [SPEAKER_02]: He they do commander things.

[00:49:14] [SPEAKER_02]: And honestly, the dynamics in the relationships that form

[00:49:17] [SPEAKER_02]: in those hour long games are way better than anything in the book.

[00:49:21] [SPEAKER_04]: So I have reached out to the professor.

[00:49:23] [SPEAKER_04]: He's not gone back to us.

[00:49:24] [SPEAKER_04]: So maybe one day. One day.

[00:49:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, and then Jordan, I would say this is not the worst series

[00:49:28] [SPEAKER_03]: we've talked about not even remotely.

[00:49:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, who knows?

[00:49:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Maybe next week.

[00:49:32] [SPEAKER_04]: So let's get in the wrap up.

[00:49:33] [SPEAKER_04]: How's that sound, gang?

[00:49:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Zach, I want to start by saying thank you so much for joining us today

[00:49:37] [SPEAKER_04]: and being an awesome member of the community.

[00:49:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Where can people find all the great things you do?

[00:49:56] [SPEAKER_02]: into reading manga and watching anime.

[00:49:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, that's awesome. Nice.

[00:50:00] [SPEAKER_02]: And then also on the YouTube, occasionally,

[00:50:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm getting some my stand up edited down

[00:50:05] [SPEAKER_02]: so that'll be on there as well.

[00:50:07] [SPEAKER_02]: So just really look for a tri attack, Zach, under all the things

[00:50:10] [SPEAKER_02]: and you'll probably find me.

[00:50:12] [SPEAKER_04]: That's awesome. I appreciate it.

[00:50:13] [SPEAKER_04]: I've been wanting to make videos at some point, but I'm too ugly.

[00:52:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Ravioli is realized she can actually pet herself.

[00:52:10] [SPEAKER_04]: So what she now does is if I'm on the couch is reachable to her.

[00:52:13] [SPEAKER_04]: She will grab my hand and then put it on her back

[00:52:16] [SPEAKER_04]: and then start running circles around the couch.

[00:52:19] [SPEAKER_04]: So I will keep petting her without actually having to move.
