[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_01]: One of those that I think people should read more.

[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Now I always go to me and Roboco.

[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's one of the people.

[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah we got to cover that at some point Jordan.

[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah the thing about me and Roboco first of all the first chapter is pretty good.

[00:02:32] [SPEAKER_01]: But it's like I think a lot of people dismiss it because it's just a gag manga

[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_01]: most of the jokes are just parodies.

[00:02:39] [SPEAKER_01]: The whole concept is a parody of the Raimon and then it goes into parodying jump stuff

[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_01]: very meta but what I like is if you read the entirety of the magazine which I don't

[00:02:48] [SPEAKER_01]: often anymore because I'm a father and don't have the time but I try to and

[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_01]: when you're reading like chapter by chapter you get to Roboco and it's kind of

[00:02:58] [SPEAKER_01]: like this story about a bunch of people who love Shounen Jump and they're

[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_01]: reading the magazine and they love the magazine as much as you do and it's

[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_01]: got like a nice break on all the other series.

[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_01]: It feels different and it feels like a love letter to the other series that

[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_01]: you like. So if you were a fan of Shounen Jump definitely check it out.

[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_03]: That kind of reminds me of just from your description of like Bobobo.

[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah I haven't read Bobobo yet.

[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Really.

[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_02]: We covered the fastest cancellation in Shounen Jump history was by the author of Bobobo.

[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay so this is hands and again there is an apostrophe which Tucker notes here

[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_03]: does not appear to serve any purpose which is true.

[00:04:02] [SPEAKER_03]: I do not understand like what the hands own.

[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_03]: The hands own all of us Jordan for we must caress the world and its beauty.

[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_03]: I hear he has the whole world in his hands.

[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_03]: But this was written by Yuichi Itakura and this guy was an assistant for Masashi Kishimoto

[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_03]: writer of a little thing called Naruto and Samurai 8 which is our eighth episode.

[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Our eighth episode it had to be.

[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Also an assistant for Yusuke Murata of Ice Shield 21 and One Punch Man fame

[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_03]: as well as crash pointed out an assistant for Takahiko Inoue's real and

[00:04:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Kadeo Yamamoto's Ichi the Killer which I didn't realize was a manga.

[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I know that is an extremely gory movie.

[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm actually not sure if the manga is an adaptation or if it's or if the movie

[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_01]: which one came first I don't know but yeah there is a manga at least.

[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_03]: It replaced Nazo no Murasame-kun by Mikio Ito which went for three volumes

[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_03]: and it was replaced by Jyukai Ningen Jumbor by Hiroyuki Takei of Shaman King

[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_03]: and Bootsuzone fame again Bootsuzone one of our episodes.

[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_03]: This was also a mega flop at 10 chapters. David I think from now on you know we have the U19 club

[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_03]: we should have the mega flop club too. A mega flop is 10 chapters or less.

[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_03]: This time David did it but anyway we're not talking about that shit we're talking

[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_03]: about hands and so let's get into the plot summary Crash take it away.

[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Tachi Banadigo has a gambling addict dead bit father named Juzo who steals his money

[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_01]: to play pachinko in order to pay off his debt to the Yakuza.

[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_01]: He fails and sends Daigo to live with his friend

[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Senichiro a handball coach and his daughter Mizuki.

[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_01]: First though he has to deal with the dang Yakuza who want to take him

[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_01]: hostage or kill him or something.

[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Daigo runs away seeing Mizuki and taking her hostage for some reason.

[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.

[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_01]: He takes her to a bridge and then she gets angry and talks about how

[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_01]: she loves handball.

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_01]: He says handball is stupid so she throws a rock next to his head.

[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_01]: The Yakuza then find Mizuki and take her hostage.

[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Daigo says he wants to be hero because one time a guy saved his life and jumped out

[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_01]: of a building to him so he saves her popcorn Jordan.

[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Daigo starts living with them and Senichiro wants him to play handball because apparently

[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_03]: his dad was like the best player ever.

[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Daigo refuses cause he fucking hates his dad but changes his mind when Senichiro

[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_03]: takes a bullet for him from the Yakuza.

[00:08:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Senichiro stays in the hospital as Daigo goes with Mizuki to handball practice.

[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_03]: We're finally for the first time we see some fucking handball in this handball manga.

[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Since Senichiro is out, the evil coach Chikako shows up to make them all run laps and shit.

[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Daigo has to stay to the side cause he doesn't know what the fuck handball is

[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_03]: but jumps super high and it's impressive.

[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_03]: The team is split six on six but one side has Jin who's the ace popcorn David.

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Their first match is against Taisei who is coached by Daigo's dad.

[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_02]: What?

[00:08:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Die Gallow daddy.

[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Apparently he has to win the championships to make enough money so the Yakuza don't kill him

[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_02]: which I think was part of the plot of Smokey BB.

[00:08:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Sort of.

[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Just then Jin reveals that he's betraying their team to go to Taisei.

[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_02]: The team gets their asses kicked for a bit until Senichiro shows up having snuck out of

[00:08:56] [SPEAKER_02]: the hospital and brushed over.

[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_02]: He then explains all of handball to Daigo in five seconds and sends him to stop Jin.

[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_02]: He manages to score a bit and then Senichiro exposition dumps about Daigo's dad.

[00:09:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Apparently he borrowed a lot of money to keep a handball team going which put him in debt

[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_02]: to the Yakuza.

[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_02]: They kidnapped Daigo and he rescued him but jumped out of building and broke his legs

[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_02]: in the process so he couldn't play handball anymore.

[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Anyway they lose but Daigo made some cool plays.

[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Flash forward three months and they're in the finals.

[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_02]: But the manga is over and that whole plot on the Jordan plot that it was Daigo telling

[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_02]: the story to his kid never surfaced.

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Huh?

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_02]: You thought that it was like a how I met your father mother thing and it never came.

[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_03]: It was so confusing because in the first chapter it says this is the story about a guy whose

[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_03]: son became the best handball player ever and it was like that dad is Daigo or something

[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_03]: like the way it was worded made it seem like Daigo was the dad.

[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_03]: But now I just think it was a mistranslation.

[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh I am sure possibly yeah.

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_03]: I think it was a mistranslation though.

[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh what fun we have but let's get into the characters.

[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_02]: So Crash do you mind telling us about the main character a little bit?

[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay so Tachibana Daigo is I could describe him as very annoying.

[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_02]: A shounen protagonist with a capital S.

[00:10:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah he wants to be a hero I think that's the main thing of his character.

[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_01]: We kind of get why but also eh?

[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Like at first he's like ah this mysterious guy saved me and he wants to be a hero

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_03]: and then at the end it's revealed oh Daigo knows that it's his dad which I feel like

[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_03]: makes it make less sense.

[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah it could have been handled better because like it feels like it's like a trauma

[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_01]: he knows but he doesn't want to recognize and everything but I think the manga handled it

[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_01]: very poorly.

[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I will also say Daigo is a fucking idiot.

[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Like just a fucking moron.

[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_02]: So is his dad though so you at least see where he gets it from.

[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah but like Mizuki throws a rock at him

[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_03]: and so he thinks that handball involves throwing rocks.

[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_01]: She does say like this is handball yeah that's what handball is.

[00:10:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Dude.

[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh god.

[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my god like he also feels very inconsistent where like sometimes he's a fucking asshole

[00:11:06] [SPEAKER_03]: who doesn't care about anybody and then suddenly he cares.

[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like back and forth with him.

[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it is consistent in a way that it doesn't feel like he cares about the people

[00:11:14] [SPEAKER_01]: it feels like he cares to be a hero.

[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_01]: So it's when he's like oh I can be a hero here that's when he does it good.

[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_01]: It never feels like it's because he cares really.

[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah it's also this manga doesn't really have the time or care to really do any

[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_02]: character development so it's like we don't really understand these characters' motivations

[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_02]: besides I want to help my dad or I love this sport or oh wow I owe a lot of money to the Yakuza.

[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_03]: It's funny that he worked on Naruto because in some ways Daigo feels like the Naruto we have

[00:11:40] [SPEAKER_03]: at home.

[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah which is again very common in most of these manga we read.

[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah but it's like it just feels especially egregious here.

[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah and then Jordan do you want to tell us a little bit about Mizuki?

[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_03]: So Mizuki his dad's friend's daughter she's like I don't know she likes handball

[00:11:58] [SPEAKER_03]: and she's angry at Daigo for I think understandable reasons.

[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_03]: She is sometimes violent towards him but Daigo again antagonizes the fuck out of her

[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_03]: and that's kind of I don't know what the fuck else to say about her other

[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_03]: like she gets kidnapped multiple times.

[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_03]: There was a lot of kidnapping in this manga.

[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_03]: There was a lot of kidnapping a lot of Yakuza stuff like comparatively very little handball.

[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_01]: You guys read the one shot that predated this?

[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I did not.

[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_01]: So the one shot is actually about he plays handball because he falls in love with the

[00:12:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Yakuza boss's daughter.

[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_01]: That's a much more interesting idea.

[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_01]: That is way better.

[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Like the Yakuza tell him like you can only date my daughter if you play handball.

[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_01]: If you can handle my balls.

[00:12:47] [SPEAKER_03]: God I just don't know what the fuck else to say about Mizuki is the problem.

[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_02]: And then I'll take uncle is it since you wrote so I only say his name I think in the first

[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_02]: chapter so I had to go back.

[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_02]: He really loves handball.

[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_02]: He's easily bamboozled.

[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_02]: He really loves handball and yeah that's he's just a very caring uncle guy but a

[00:13:08] [SPEAKER_02]: lot of it right on Daigo actually playing handball and we get the super word plot

[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_02]: or Daigo lies to him about playing handball and then does and I didn't really understand

[00:13:14] [SPEAKER_02]: what purpose of that was.

[00:13:16] [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't.

[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_02]: He is definitely part of one of the funniest scenes where Daigo essentially treats him like

[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_02]: he's dead and he's like I will continue to play handball in your name when he's still

[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_02]: fine and then he does so at least he contributed to probably one of the best

[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_02]: moments of those series.

[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah yeah he seems like a good guy who Daigo makes cry very easily by just being like

[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_03]: handball's dumb and yeah he like being made fun of by a little kid it was too

[00:13:44] [SPEAKER_03]: much for him which you know the older I get the more I understand.

[00:13:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah oh man.

[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I was gonna say like Daigo trashes handball but he it's very clear like he doesn't know

[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_01]: what handball is so any criticism that he has about the sport is void and null.

[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_03]: You know what crash the problem is I also don't know what handball really is.

[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_02]: You guys didn't play it at school that Portuguese think?

[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_02]: No did not know a single thing about the sports I read it.

[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_01]: I played it a bunch.

[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_02]: So crash what would you say are some things you did not really like about the series

[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_02]: and maybe contributed to why it lasted 10 chapters?

[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean the thing is the end ball right it's the sports manga that if I'm not wrong we

[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_01]: only get to see the actual sport by chapter six which I don't know maybe it's not a lot but

[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_01]: in a 10 chapter manga that is a lot and that's when we see the sport that's not

[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_01]: when we see the the main character play because I think he only plays in the last

[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_01]: chapter if I'm not wrong.

[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah this manga absolutely does not actually want to talk about handball.
