[00:00:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to this episode of Shonen Flop where we talk about manga and shonen jump that didn't make it big. I'm David. I'm Jordan. [00:00:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Find a link to the discord in our episode description and on our website shonenflop.com. You might tell the audience a little bit about yourself.
[00:00:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Hi, I'm Brendan Hull. I am a manga letterer. I letter manga such as Green Green Greens of course.
[00:00:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Whoa, what a coincidence.
[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Hey!
[00:01:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah!
[00:01:01] [SPEAKER_03]: So you have heard of this manga, okay.
[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Manga Awards Best New Manga Winner Hashtag DRCL Midnight Children
[00:01:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not familiar with that. I've never heard of that before.
[00:01:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh wow, really?
[00:01:13] [SPEAKER_01]: DRCL Midnight Children?
[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, by Shinichi Sakamoto.
[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:01:18] [SPEAKER_01]: I feel like such a plea but I haven't heard of it either.
[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_01]: It's the best new manga.
[00:01:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Got an award, yeah.
[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:01:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I gotta keep that in mind.
[00:01:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Ultimate Exorcist to Yoshi.
[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Ultra Man, Along Came a Spider-Man.
[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Along Came a Spider-Man?
[00:01:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, both of them together.
[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, Ultra Man, Along Came a Spider-Man?
[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Whoa!
[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Now that's a fucking crossover. Goddamn.
[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_03]: If Ultra Man was in Avengers Endgame, I would have watched it.
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Look at Jordan and his counter-cultural looking ass.
[00:01:46] [SPEAKER_01]: I've been lettering for, I think, four years now?
[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, I haven't been keeping track of that shit.
[00:01:51] [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, I'm here to talk about some greens and some gulp.
[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Hell yeah.
[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_02]: I believe you are our second letterer on the show,
[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_02]: so it's always a pleasure to have people that worked on the manga.
[00:02:00] [SPEAKER_02]: I believe I asked this of our last letter, so I have to ask you as well.
[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_02]: What is your favorite haunt?
[00:02:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Ready for anything BB.
[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Interesting.
[00:02:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Which is the main dialogue font used in green, green, greens.
[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Whoa!
[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my god.
[00:02:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I looked that up.
[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Nice.
[00:02:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh shit.
[00:02:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's like actual comic font.
[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh fuck.
[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_03]: It's so interesting because like comic fonts, it's like they're almost comic sans.
[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_03]: But they're not.
[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_03]: There's just like that little bit of difference that makes all the world.
[00:02:30] [SPEAKER_02]: What makes it your favorite font?
[00:02:32] [SPEAKER_01]: I really like the letter forms.
[00:02:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I like the alternate glyphs that it uses.
[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_01]: So if you're able to alternate between different versions of each letter throughout like the text that you've placed into a text box.
[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_01]: So if you were to zoom in and look closely, you'd notice that the R's are all different from each other and there's different A's.
[00:02:50] [SPEAKER_01]: It's not always the same A used in every word.
[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_01]: I love just the roundness of it and the line weight that it has and how well that line weight can work with different art styles.
[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_01]: It's just a very nice font.
[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_02]: See, I can tell you're a professional because you really put thought into this.
[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_02]: I think too hard about this.
[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_02]: I wrote a paper on Century Gothic in college, so I do respect the fonts.
[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm glad you respect it.
[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_01]: It's a great font.
[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_01]: What can I say?
[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_01]: It is.
[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_01]: I put too much.
[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_01]: I put way too much thought into that shit.
[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if I'd say too much.
[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_03]: It's your job.
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I guess I put as much thought as I should into it.
[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Much like this show.
[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_02]: So let's move into discussing Green Green Greens as we get into the manga details.
[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Jordan, tell us about it.
[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, this is Green Green Greens.
[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_03]: As Tucker notes here, the title is just the words in English.
[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_02]: It's very, yeah, a very strong translator note.
[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Written by Kento Tarasaka, notable people they were an assistant for, was Tadatoshi Fujimaki of Robot Laserbeam fame.
[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Look, Brando, you know what Robot Laserbeam is, right?
[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I have no idea what that is.
[00:03:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my God.
[00:03:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, so I have to do this, David.
[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_03]: What do you think Robot Laserbeam is about?
[00:04:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Robot with a laser beam.
[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_03]: It's about golf.
[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_01]: You know what?
[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe I should have thought of that.
[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_01]: In your defense, it's a really stupid title for a golf manga.
[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_03]: It's about an autistic guy who can hit balls in a very straight line.
[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_03]: It also gets racist towards the end.
[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh.
[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, Kento Tarasaka's other works include, you know, a bunch of one shots and stuff.
[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_03]: And fucking Beast Children, David.
[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_03]: What the fuck?
[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, so Beast Children, Brando, is very important to the Shonen Flop lore because that was the first manga we ever read on Shonen Flop where we said, wow, this is objectively terrible.
[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_02]: And we had to create a new rating in our rating system for the quality of the series.
[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, we have certified flop now because Beast Children was just so much worse than the other manga that we had covered before.
[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_03]: To be fair, it's episode four.
[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's not like we covered that many other manga.
[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_03]: But still, it was just like we were reading it and we were like, how did this even get into Shonen Jump?
[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_03]: This is abysmal.
[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_02]: This is terrible.
[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_02]: But we've found out that Beast Children was just the top of the shit iceberg.
[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_03]: I would say it's in the middle, but definitely not at the bottom.
[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_02]: They're far worse than Beast Children.
[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_02]: There are things far worse than Beast Children like School Judgment or Zot or Build King.
[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, man.
[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_02]: And then, Jordan, can you tell us more about the series?
[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_03]: So this is Green Green Greens.
[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_03]: It ran from November 26, 2023 to June 9, 2023.
[00:05:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Beep beep.
[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Hey, this is Jordan from the future.
[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Some audio got cut out where I learned that this series was going at the same time as the Masters tournament.
[00:05:36] [SPEAKER_03]: So the following is a reaction to learning that information.
[00:05:41] Again?
[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_02]: For context, right now, Beast Children ran during the World Cup that was hosted in Japan and got canceled the week after the Rugby World Cup ended.
[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_02]: So this guy, they just say you can run it during the sports event.
[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_02]: We'll see what happens.
[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_03]: It seems very clear that they were like, well, we're not going to cancel our rugby manga during the World Cup.
[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_03]: So if there's a huge golf tournament in Japan, I guess they were like, we're not going to cancel our golf manga during the golf tournament.
[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah.
[00:06:07] [SPEAKER_03]: So this replaced the Ichinose family's deadly sins by Taizan 5.
[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_03]: That ran for six volumes.
[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.
[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_03]: You can listen to our analysis of it on Patreon.
[00:06:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Shonenflop.com.
[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Very nice lettering in that.
[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Whoever did that.
[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Good job.
[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, totally.
[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_03]: I wonder who it was.
[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_03]: The series that replaced this was Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi.
[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Hey, I think somebody mentioned that earlier in this recording.
[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Nice lettering in that.
[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I forget where, but like, I just remember hearing the lettering's just like very good.
[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I hear people actually just read it for the lettering.
[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I wish more people did that.
[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_02]: That'd be so good.
[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_02]: That'd be fucking amazing.
[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm surprised there hasn't been like a manga about fonts.
[00:06:52] [SPEAKER_02]: There probably is.
[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Probably is somewhere.
[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I think so.
[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what.
[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_01]: That'd be really good.
[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_01]: What the font is a manga about fonts.
[00:06:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I think Seven Seas published it.
[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Actually, isn't that a website that you can download fonts from?
[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_01]: There's a manga called that as well.
[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, really?
[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh my God.
[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah.
[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_03]: So the series that started at the same time as Green Green Greens was Shadow Eliminators.
[00:07:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my God.
[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Shadow Eliminators, David.
[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Hey.
[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_03]: It was our previous episode.
[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_03]: That was a manga that landed in the same category that we invented for Beast Children,
[00:07:21] [SPEAKER_03]: I believe.
[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Three volumes flopped.
[00:07:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Episode 111.
[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_03]: It's the previous episode.
[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_03]: But Green Green Greens.
[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_03]: 26 chapters.
[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Three volumes.
[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Let's get into the plot.
[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Taken away too soon.
[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Spoiler alert.
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I feel like our why it failed section is going to be a little bit short on this episode.
[00:07:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Compared to the last episode, at least.
[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_02]: But let's find out what happened in those 26 chapters as let's get into the plot summary.
[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_01]: High school student Haku Yaesaki doesn't have any goals in life.
[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, why try and do anything when there's always going to be someone better than you?
[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_01]: His friends are doing things like playing baseball or studying med school or trying to
[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_01]: make a video game, but he's just tagging along.
[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_01]: One day, he runs into a classmate of his, Nadeshiko Oga, who in contrast is deadly serious
[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_01]: about becoming a pro golfer.
[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Yaesaki makes a comment about how she could make a lot of money off of that like Tiger Woods.
[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_01]: And Oga makes him hit some balls at the driving range where she works.
[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_01]: When he does a shitty job, she roasts him for never trying anything or putting work into
[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_01]: anything or having anything to offer.
[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Hurt by her comment, Yaesaki starts really practicing his golf swing.
[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Eventually, he hits a ball pretty far and Oga realizes he did that with a weaker club,
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_01]: meaning he's strong.
[00:08:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Dang.
[00:08:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Popcorn Jordan.
[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Yaesaki soon really starts getting into golf, even getting a job at the driving range
[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_03]: like Oga so he can practice more.
[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_03]: After winning a driving competition against Shikara, a jealous co-worker with a crush on
[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Oga, who probably would have mattered more if the series kept going, Yaesaki is offered
[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_03]: a chance to play at the newcomer's welcome tournament where he'll play actual golf on an actual course
[00:08:56] [SPEAKER_03]: for the first time.
[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Whoa.
[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my God.
[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Just then, he meets Oliver Shiramine, who came from America to deliver a message from
[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_03]: his mother at golf college.
[00:09:06] [SPEAKER_03]: So Oga can go to golf school in the US and get a bachelor's degree in golf and probably
[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_03]: a master's.
[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Get it?
[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Yaesaki tries to get Shiramine to teach him putting, but Shiramine refuses until Yaesaki
[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_03]: is able to help him reconnect with his little brother through Pokewan cards.
[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_03]: I wonder what that is.
[00:09:27] [SPEAKER_03]: You guys.
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Legally distinct, Gargoy.
[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Legally distinct Pokewan.
[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_03]: And Yaesaki decides he's going to try and get a birdie in his first tournament.
[00:09:37] [SPEAKER_03]: And with Oliver's help, he's able to.
[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_03]: He actually is able to get two.
[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_03]: And he briefly overtakes Oga.
[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Oga's like, what the fuck?
[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm losing to this newbie?
[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_03]: And refusing to get defeated by Yaesaki.
[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Oga has a very important flashback to her mom and then gets an eagle.
[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Popcorn Dave.
[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_02]: I love how they have a chart that explains all the different terms, which we definitely
[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_02]: really could have used in our chibi episode because I think, George, you used the term
[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_02]: birdie very wrongly.
[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I used the term wrongly.
[00:10:07] [SPEAKER_02]: It's okay.
[00:10:07] [SPEAKER_02]: It happens.
[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_02]: All right.
[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Next, Oga plays in a legit golf tournament, which is like for realsies and invites Yaesaki
[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_02]: to be her caddy.
[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_02]: She pushes herself to the point where she badly hurts her elbow, but ends up coming in second
[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_02]: place.
[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_02]: She'll be unable to golf for a few months and ugly cries with Yaesaki about how she lost.
[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Yaesaki is feeling down after Oga's injury.
[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Actually, someone on the Discord asked me to make that into a emoji, which I have done
[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_02]: as them crying.
[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Yaesaki is feeling down after Oga's injury.
[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_02]: And so Oliver invites him to play golf where he reminds Yaesaki of the importance of golfing
[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_02]: like yourself and not like someone else.
[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Before leaving for America, Oliver gives Yaesaki a key to a storage unit filled with old
[00:10:41] [SPEAKER_02]: clubs.
[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_02]: However, it's in the United States, so he's got to get good enough at golf to go there
[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_02]: and get them.
[00:10:46] [SPEAKER_02]: The last chapter has Oga taking Yaesaki to get his first golf club that's his and not
[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_02]: borrowed from the driving range.
[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_02]: It reflects on how it's okay to fail sometimes.
[00:10:53] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's not about being the best, but improving.
[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Much like how this offer drastically improved from Beast Children.
[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_02]: I just thought what a absolute glow up.
[00:11:00] [SPEAKER_02]: That was insane.
[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Holy shit.
[00:11:02] [SPEAKER_02]: We'll get into it.
[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_02]: But first, let's talk about some characters.
[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_02]: So, Brendo, as our wonderful guest, do you mind telling us a bit about the main character
[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_01]: of the series?
[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_01]: You're making me actually think really hard about this series, and I haven't had to think
[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_01]: about it very hard in a while.
[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, Yaesaki, he's a high schooler.
[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, he's a bit of a slacker.
[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_01]: He's a bit, maybe a little insecure about how he doesn't know what he's going to do,
[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_01]: but his friends seem to have it all together.
[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_01]: We don't really get a huge introduction to him.
[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_01]: He kind of just goes straight to the golf course, and he can hit balls really hard.
[00:11:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I kind of felt like I missed why he was so motivated to play golf.
[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_03]: One of my biggest problems with this series, and we'll talk about it why it failed, is that
[00:11:39] [SPEAKER_03]: I feel like Yaesaki isn't as interesting as he could be.
[00:11:42] [SPEAKER_03]: He sort of just becomes a POV where he starts and he doesn't care about anything.
[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like, oh, I try.
[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not good at anything.
[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not good at anything.
[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_03]: And then Oga makes him hit a golf ball.
[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_03]: He's like, hey, I'm not terrible at this.
[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_03]: And she just made me feel like I suck and I shouldn't suck.
[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_03]: So let me try.
[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_03]: We actually try for once.
[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_02]: That's a fair, but I just felt like they didn't sell too much of why he got super obsessive
[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_02]: with golf early on in the series.
[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_03]: No, I think that's fair.
[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Honestly, I kind of feel like he's not the main character.
[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I also feel like the series can't really make up its mind if he is good at golf or not.
[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Because there are scenes where he excels and they're just like, and then they feel like
[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_02]: they kind of wreck Connor.
[00:12:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, that was a fluke.
[00:12:22] [SPEAKER_02]: He's actually not very good at golf.
[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_02]: And I couldn't really tell what his actual skill level was.
[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_03]: I think the idea is that he's very strong.
[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_03]: He's very good at hitting the ball very far.
[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_03]: And then like, not very good at anything else.
[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_03]: You know what?
[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_03]: That's fair.
[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I think that's the idea.
[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_01]: And I think he's supposed to be like how short of a time he's been doing it.
[00:12:43] [SPEAKER_01]: But then like, as soon as he's up against people like Oga and Hagio, was that the other
[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_01]: dude?
[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_01]: He starts seeing that he's maybe a little out of his league there.
[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_03]: I appreciate that because it would have sucked if like he started and it was just like,
[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_03]: wow, he's already as good as Oga and he's already better than everybody.
[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I hate sports manga that do that.
[00:13:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_03]: So thankfully it was like, no, he's not very good.
[00:13:08] [SPEAKER_03]: He just started.
[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Of course he isn't.
[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_03]: As Brendo said, he's good for a beginner, but it's still pretty clear he's a beginner.
[00:13:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Like he has talent in the game, but he still has to cultivate that.
[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_03]: And then you know who does have talent is Oga.
[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Jordan, do you mind telling us a little bit about her?
[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, you mean the real main character?
[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Oga's great.
[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_03]: She is easily the most interesting character in the whole series for me.
[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_03]: She is extremely serious about golf.
[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_03]: She's put her heart and soul into the game and has been trying like so hard for years because
[00:13:39] [SPEAKER_03]: her mom is a pro golfer in America and she got divorced from Oga's dad and she went to
[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_03]: America and Oga stayed in Japan with her dad and now lives with her grandma because her
[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_03]: dad hates golf.
[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:13:52] [SPEAKER_03]: She wants to be able to go to America and get her golf degree and meet her mom again,
[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_03]: basically, and be like, I'm on the same page as you.
[00:14:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_02]: One thing I really like is that she's this cold character, but they really explain it.
[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_02]: And she's not like kind of like a robot where she there are moments where you actually see
[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_02]: personality from her.
[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_02]: She's not like Sasuke where Sasuke is never fun.
[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_02]: She will make jokes like she has her own sense of humor that I think the offer really reflected
[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_02]: well that stayed true to the core concept of how serious she is as a character.
[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_03]: You also kind of see her emotionally break down a few times like in a realistic way.
[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Just imagine George calling that scene where she just starts bawling her eyes out after
[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_02]: the tournament.
[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Small emotional reaction to the tournament.
[00:14:33] [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't say small.
[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_03]: It was pretty notable.
[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_02]: But no, like.
[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Weekly Raiders, if you notice, she may be crying in a scene.
[00:14:39] [SPEAKER_03]: God damn it, David.
[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Fuck.
[00:14:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I didn't say that.
[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Motherfucker.
[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Brenna, did you have any thoughts on Oga that we haven't mentioned so far?
[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I think she has like the most interesting design of any character.
[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Like she's just.
[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Just cool character design.
[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Goes very well with her personality.
[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_01]: It really did seem like the series was going to be like Haku or Yaesaki obviously has his
[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_01]: stuff going on.
[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_01]: But like it did seem like it was maybe going to start exploring other characters and
[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_01]: they were kind of going to be the meat of it.
[00:15:12] [SPEAKER_01]: But then it kind of ended really abruptly.
[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Yaesaki was like not the character I was most interested in.
[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I was most interested in Oga and seeing where she was going and what she was going to do.
[00:15:24] [SPEAKER_03]: And their interactions are actually pretty good.
[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_03]: I really like.
[00:15:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Seems like there's a little bit of some kind of relationship growing there.
[00:15:31] [SPEAKER_03]: But like it's never forced.
[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_03]: It's not actually like stated.
[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_03]: It just kind of seems like there's like one or two moments where it seems like it might
[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_03]: start happening.
[00:15:39] [SPEAKER_03]: But you know.
[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_03]: It's not the point basically.
[00:15:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:15:43] [SPEAKER_02]: And then finally there's Oliver.
[00:15:44] [SPEAKER_02]: I like Oliver.
[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_02]: He is like kind of serious.
[00:15:47] [SPEAKER_02]: But like he wants Yaesaki to succeed.
[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Which is rare to see in these types of characters.
[00:15:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Which is definitely a theme where you can just see these archetypes actually represent
[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_02]: really well.
[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Where he is like I am pushing you because I know you can handle it.
[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not pushing you because I'm an asshole.
[00:15:59] [SPEAKER_02]: You know.
[00:15:59] [SPEAKER_03]: But he also like has a reason to kind of like we've seen a lot of manga where there's just
[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_03]: some guy who's who's like you know I call it the kind of older brother thing where it
[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_03]: feels like the main character wants a guy to be his older brother.
[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't get that from Oliver because first of all at first he wants nothing to do with
[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Yaesaki.
[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Like Yaesaki really really tries to get him to help him and finally is able to.
[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_02]: He even tries to bribe him with a thousand dollars.
[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like I don't want your money.
[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_03]: It's not why I'm fucking doing this.
[00:16:27] [SPEAKER_03]: And so like eventually he tries to help Oliver reconnect with his younger brother.
[00:16:33] [SPEAKER_03]: And that's when I think Oliver is like OK well you know what I actually kind of like this
[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_03]: guy.
[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Let me help him out.
[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_03]: And yeah he's got like some talent.
[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_03]: I think he can go far.
[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.
[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_02]: I feel like he would definitely say the phrase skill issue.
[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh yeah.
[00:16:44] [SPEAKER_02]: But yeah I also love how that detail that he knows nothing that isn't golf related.
[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Like he really struggles to play the Pokemon TCG.
[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Sorry the legally distinct Pokemon TCG.
[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Pokemon.
[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_03]: At one point they're like how do kids understand a game this complex?
[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_03]: And then Yaesaki asked him a question about golf and he goes into this extremely detailed
[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_03]: complicated answer.
[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's like OK so if you understand golf you can figure out this game.
[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Which I've seen some very smart people struggle with the rules of Magic the Gathering.
[00:17:11] [SPEAKER_02]: So fair enough.
[00:17:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Look a lot of it is what you learned at a young age.
[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_03]: If you started playing Magic when you were younger it just makes perfect sense.
[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_03]: If you haven't then it's like what is this?
[00:17:22] [SPEAKER_02]: OK.
[00:17:22] [SPEAKER_02]: So now that I think we've discussed all of the main characters of the series let's get
[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_02]: into some of the issues the series had.
[00:17:29] [SPEAKER_02]: So Brenda what would you say something that stood out to you as something that you felt
[00:17:32] [SPEAKER_02]: the series didn't do so strongly?
[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I think a part of why it didn't like catch on for a lot of people was just it didn't get
[00:17:39] [SPEAKER_01]: to like actual golf very quickly.
[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_01]: It took a while to get there which I personally didn't actually mind at all but.
[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't either.
[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_01]: I definitely saw how that failed to capture an audience.
[00:17:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:17:50] [SPEAKER_01]: In a way I think that's just a skill issue on the reader's part.
[00:17:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Get good.
[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Just read it dude.
[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I love that expression skill issue.
[00:17:59] [SPEAKER_02]: It's really good.
[00:18:00] [SPEAKER_03]: In Beast Children it takes only half the manga to get to actual rugby.
[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah I was going to say this is not new for the author.
[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_03]: But I think that's a lot more OK with golf because hitting the ball and driving is like
[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_03]: a significant portion of golf.
[00:18:14] [SPEAKER_03]: 60% of the skill set is at the driving range.
[00:18:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:18:17] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's like you're still clearly watching actual golf.
[00:18:20] [SPEAKER_03]: In Beast Children they invent these tiny little bullshit rugby-ish games that like one guy can
[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_03]: play against another guy and it's nothing like rugby.
[00:18:28] [SPEAKER_03]: At least with this it's like no people do driving at the driving range.
[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_03]: That is a thing that people do.
[00:18:33] [SPEAKER_03]: That is an important thing in golf that people play.
[00:18:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:18:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I also Jordan had pointed out but it was funny.
[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_02]: So when people posted screenshots of green green greens I made a joke and I was like this
[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_02]: looks like the Beast Children artist practice for another five years.
[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_02]: And someone on the Discord was like hey buddy guess who drew this manga.
[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_02]: This is unquestionable improvement but there are times where you still see some off models
[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_02]: some weird perspective.
[00:18:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Jordan posted a screenshot on our chat where it's like a face is just put on like the wrong
[00:18:57] [SPEAKER_02]: side of the mouth.
[00:18:58] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's like you can tell this guy is probably in our two or three years away from really
[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_02]: feeling like it doesn't feel like a better version of Beast Children's art.
[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_03]: He still does the Dominic Dian mouth on the cheek thing.
[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Which that's one of those things where it's like I never understood why people had to do
[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_03]: that in comics.
[00:19:16] [SPEAKER_03]: That always felt like a cost-cutting measure they use in anime so they don't have to redraw
[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_03]: the you know like profile.
[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure it really helps with perspective.
[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Even despite that though the art was pretty like pretty good.
[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Few little hiccups but it was like really nice to look at.
[00:19:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Every single aspect of this manga was a drastic improvement.
[00:19:35] [SPEAKER_02]: It's absolutely he spent those four years really well.
[00:19:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah we're not kidding when we said when we read Beast Children we were like how the
[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_03]: fuck did art this bad get in Shonen Jump?
[00:19:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah and then we read Zan and we really.
[00:19:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:19:47] [SPEAKER_02]: That was like his uncle is the editor of Shonen Jump.
[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah there's no other way that got in there but anyway there are a couple hiccups with
[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_03]: the art.
[00:19:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes you're like kind of that doesn't really work that great.
[00:19:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Generally it's fine though.
[00:19:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Generally it's pretty good.
[00:20:00] [SPEAKER_02]: But we are in the negative so we have to stay on that.
[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_02]: So Jordan what is something that you feel we haven't brought up yet that you saw?
[00:20:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah there we go.
[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_03]: No I genuinely think my biggest issue with this is that Yaesaki isn't that interesting a
[00:20:13] [SPEAKER_03]: lot of the time.
[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Like he's flat in comparison to the other characters.
[00:20:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:20:17] [SPEAKER_02]: And as we talked about his motivation to golf is I just didn't think was very well explained.
[00:20:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:20:21] [SPEAKER_02]: I do want to say I disagree.
[00:20:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I think spending six chapters at the driving range in this it's essentially six chapters
[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_02]: of the same scene does feel like it dragged along a little bit.
[00:20:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Like yeah I think it would have helped if they had done like maybe like even just a three
[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_02]: whole thing where they're just like let's get you on the course just to feel what it's
[00:20:36] [SPEAKER_02]: like.
[00:20:36] [SPEAKER_02]: And I think it could have broken up because it's literally imagine you're reading this
[00:20:39] [SPEAKER_02]: manga for almost two months and it's in the same room for two months.
[00:20:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Especially because like the manga improves in quality when they get to the field.
[00:20:46] [SPEAKER_03]: God it's hard to come up with like pure negatives.
[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_01]: The thing is like the way that it's kind of paced once Yaesaki starts practicing golf is
[00:20:54] [SPEAKER_01]: like sort of similar to Hajime no Ippo in a way except Yaesaki I don't think is as interesting
[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_01]: a character as Ippo.
[00:21:01] [SPEAKER_01]: No.
[00:21:01] [SPEAKER_01]: And you have like kind of similar events.
[00:21:03] [SPEAKER_01]: A lot of him practicing on his own and then like a like a practice round against someone
[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_01]: else.
[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_01]: In this case it's Hagiyo.
[00:21:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Like it's very similar but like whereas in something like Ippo you have like character
[00:21:14] [SPEAKER_01]: motivations like he's been bullied by people.
[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_01]: This is kind of something some way for him to have an outlet for that.
[00:21:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Yaesaki he's just kind of he just kind of hit a ball once and he kind of kept going at
[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_01]: it.
[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Like it's hard to figure out why we're here.
[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Another kind of issue I have that kind of bugged me a little bit.
[00:21:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Not not that much but like where it's like yeah he's not incredible about golf but it
[00:21:37] [SPEAKER_03]: does it is like well he still has a little bit of a natural advantage based on like how tall
[00:21:41] [SPEAKER_03]: he is and how strong he is.
[00:21:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Like it doesn't bother me too much because it's kind of foreshadowed a couple times in
[00:21:47] [SPEAKER_03]: the first chapter where they're like you know man like you're good at this shit if you tried
[00:21:53] [SPEAKER_03]: you would be better but you don't try.
[00:21:56] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's like he actually tries for once and it's like oh yeah hey I like this.
[00:22:01] [SPEAKER_03]: But no I agree.
[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like bugged me a little bit.
[00:22:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Did they explain how he was so strong?
[00:22:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Because like the other guy who disappeared so I'd leave his assure.
[00:22:08] [SPEAKER_02]: They actively are like oh he works out a ton he's like very physically strong.
[00:22:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Well there isn't even like Yosaki used to work at a convenience store and he'd carry
[00:22:15] [SPEAKER_02]: all the boxes like it just I don't think they explained how he was so strong.
[00:22:19] [SPEAKER_03]: The only reasoning they give there's two.
[00:22:22] [SPEAKER_03]: One he's tall and the other one is that he's just he's just athletic.
[00:22:26] [SPEAKER_03]: He's been athletic his whole life.
[00:22:27] [SPEAKER_03]: But didn't they like talk about he doesn't do any sports?
[00:22:29] [SPEAKER_03]: They talked about how when he does do sports he's actually very good at it but he doesn't
[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_03]: do it.
[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_03]: He doesn't apply himself.
[00:22:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you remember the baseball player was like man when we were playing catch you had a better
[00:22:39] [SPEAKER_03]: arm than I did and Yosaki was like oh I didn't shut up.
[00:22:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Fair.
[00:22:43] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to be really brave and say I think also there's kind of an interest ceiling in
[00:22:46] [SPEAKER_02]: golf where golf there's just a lot of elements that golf that make it hard to be a successful
[00:22:49] [SPEAKER_02]: sports series primarily because it is kind of there's no team elements to it like yeah
[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_02]: you can have your golf buddies but there's not any like really cool team ups or worrying
[00:22:57] [SPEAKER_02]: about like dealing with your team members and stuff because it's all just you versus the
[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_02]: world in golf when it comes to the actual like the actual competition.
[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Also I'm going to say it golf's kind of lame.
[00:23:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Golf is not that interesting a sport.
[00:23:07] [SPEAKER_03]: If I was like a kid reading Shonen Jump I would not give a fuck about golf.
[00:23:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I still I don't really care about golf at all.
[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like they mentioned it in the mog isn't that a sport for old men and it's like yeah
[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_03]: it kind of is is the thing like there are a lot of reasons why I see it failing in specifically
[00:23:25] [SPEAKER_03]: in Shonen Jump that don't relate to its quality like the fact that the main focus character
[00:23:32] [SPEAKER_03]: is a girl.
[00:23:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't think that that diminishes its quality but I can see how that might turn you know
[00:23:38] [SPEAKER_03]: sexist Shonen Jump readers off.
[00:23:40] [SPEAKER_03]: As we know Shonen Jump is proudly sexist.
[00:23:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:23:43] [SPEAKER_03]: As they talked about it in their own manga about Shonen Jump.
[00:23:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
[00:23:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Brenda we read a manga about like the creation of Shonen Jump where an editor was like yeah
[00:23:51] [SPEAKER_03]: you know we don't want to have any women on this on this editorial staff.
[00:23:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean women don't know what guys like and this is Shonen Jump.
[00:23:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:23:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:23:59] [SPEAKER_03]: It was like not even hiding it.
[00:24:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm glad the section is short because I think we have a lot of really nice things to say
[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_02]: about it.
[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_02]: So why don't we get into what it did well.
[00:24:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you.
[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_02]: God.
[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_02]: However before we get into that if you've been enjoying this show we'd really appreciate
[00:24:11] [SPEAKER_02]: if you subscribe to the Shonen Flop YouTube.
[00:24:13] [SPEAKER_02]: We're trying to hit our goal of 1500 YouTube subs and if we hit it Jor and I are going
[00:24:17] [SPEAKER_02]: to do a bonus episode on the Build King Epilogue.
[00:24:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh my God.
[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Just remember that series we said Brenda was way worse than Beast Children.
[00:24:22] [SPEAKER_02]: If you're already subscribed we really appreciate it.
[00:24:25] [SPEAKER_02]: So Jordan though yes so what's something that stood out to you as a positive.
[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_02]: This manga made me want to play golf.
[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah I was like I honestly was like shit I might actually want to play golf.
[00:24:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't like golf.
[00:24:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I've played golf before and like I was kind of like ambivalent towards it.
[00:24:38] [SPEAKER_03]: This manga made me really just want to go out to a driving range and hit some balls
[00:24:43] [SPEAKER_03]: around like what the fuck.
[00:24:44] [SPEAKER_03]: This is the first sports manga we've covered on the show that made me actually want to play
[00:24:49] [SPEAKER_03]: the fucking sport.
[00:24:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:24:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Like that's amazing.
[00:24:51] [SPEAKER_02]: How about you Brenda did this make you want to play golf?
[00:24:53] [SPEAKER_01]: It didn't make me.
[00:24:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not a sport guy in any capacity so it didn't make me want to play golf but I was very
[00:24:58] [SPEAKER_01]: captured by how even though we didn't know a whole lot about Yaesaki the way he was written
[00:25:05] [SPEAKER_01]: and the way characters like Ogo were written.
[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Like it made me care about golf and from their perspective and it was very interesting and
[00:25:13] [SPEAKER_01]: very cool.
[00:25:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Even though there are some questions about why Yaesaki loves golf when he or like how
[00:25:19] [SPEAKER_03]: he goes goes from like zero to loving golf pretty quickly.
[00:25:23] [SPEAKER_03]: It is like infectious when you see how much he loves golfing and how he scores something
[00:25:28] [SPEAKER_03]: it's like yeah and it's like yeah you go Yaesaki but really Oga is what really sells
[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_03]: this for me when she when she was trying to get an in Eagle and she had a like the flashback
[00:25:39] [SPEAKER_03]: to her mom and there were all these emotions like she didn't want to lose to this guy she
[00:25:43] [SPEAKER_03]: didn't want to do all this and then it flashes to like reality oop there goes gravity the bowl
[00:25:48] [SPEAKER_03]: goes into like the hole and I'm like yeah like I physically like popped my fist and I got
[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_03]: a little emotional.
[00:25:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:25:56] [SPEAKER_03]: And I was like yeah any manga that makes me do that you're doing something right man.
[00:26:02] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't give a fuck about golf.
[00:26:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I cared about something involving golf.
[00:26:06] [SPEAKER_02]: I also think the series made me think of Blue Box in a good way where the characters
[00:26:09] [SPEAKER_02]: have like these little side jokes and stuff but it just made them feel more fleshed out
[00:26:13] [SPEAKER_02]: like um it's like when that one character who's super like has a huge crush on Oga and he's
[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_02]: like Oga this swing is for you and like the assistant's like Oga I think someone's saying
[00:26:23] [SPEAKER_02]: your name and she's like yeah I don't care.
[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_02]: I love that guy.
[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And I just thought that was a really funny joke where this series is funny but it doesn't
[00:26:30] [SPEAKER_02]: feel like a gag manga which is exactly the tone it wanted to be.
[00:26:34] [SPEAKER_03]: No there are legitimately funny moments.
[00:26:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I loved that that guy in particular was really funny where like uh Yaesaki like kind of psychs
[00:26:42] [SPEAKER_03]: him out by giving him like um the golfing glove that like Oga gave him and he's like I don't
[00:26:48] [SPEAKER_03]: now I don't want to golf so hard.
[00:26:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't want to rip up this glove.
[00:26:51] [SPEAKER_03]: And uh no it was like frequently effortlessly funny and Oga would be drawn with like um
[00:26:58] [SPEAKER_03]: you know gag goofy faces and they were legitimately really funny.
[00:27:02] [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah like when Oga would golf and kind of go into like um kind of start to get like
[00:27:08] [SPEAKER_03]: emotional and stuff she would kind of go crazy like with how she was so focused on the game
[00:27:14] [SPEAKER_03]: as opposed to like her own physical well-being it was like pretty compelling.
[00:27:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah Oga is just a really interesting character and I think if I really do wish she had been
[00:27:23] [SPEAKER_02]: the protagonist I think that was a good call out.
[00:27:25] [SPEAKER_03]: The same time though first of all I feel like she was the protagonist and it was nice.
[00:27:30] [SPEAKER_02]: But the offer couldn't make her the protagonist for like political or not political you know
[00:27:33] [SPEAKER_02]: what I mean.
[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah but also like the way that Yaesaki was like the POV character and we got to see Oga through
[00:27:40] [SPEAKER_03]: his eyes I think still really worked.
[00:27:43] [SPEAKER_03]: I think that was a really good way to frame Oga.
[00:27:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:27:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah I agree.
[00:27:47] [SPEAKER_03]: It gave you the opportunity to have her be more competent and more established and not
[00:27:54] [SPEAKER_03]: act like your typical shonen jump hero.
[00:27:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah and then something that's unique about golf I do like is because you can really sit
[00:28:00] [SPEAKER_02]: and think about things it did really show you the tactical side of golf like it almost
[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_02]: feels like it's a turn-based RPG you know.
[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:28:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh yeah.
[00:28:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Just just like a unique thing about the sport that no other sport is like that.
[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Really oh what tool do I use?
[00:28:11] [SPEAKER_02]: What's the weather condition?
[00:28:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Really sitting and thinking and that also gives you a chance to have a character in a perspective
[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_02]: like legitimately she can sit and have that flashback and then think about how she's going
[00:28:19] [SPEAKER_02]: to do her move when she gets that what was an eagle and that actually works in the flow
[00:28:22] [SPEAKER_02]: of how golf works as a sport.
[00:28:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:28:24] [SPEAKER_03]: I also liked how robot laser beam has all these these moments where he's like oh he's
[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_03]: using like his special move or he's he's hitting the ball like a snake.
[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_02]: There's the seven colors of golf the secret techniques.
[00:28:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:28:37] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's like this one's like no they're fucking playing golf like how golf is played.
[00:28:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:28:41] [SPEAKER_03]: And I do really like how Yaesaki's improvement is like slow how it's like again there's like
[00:28:47] [SPEAKER_03]: this realistic quality to this where it's like yeah it would be fucking stupid if he just
[00:28:51] [SPEAKER_03]: suddenly became the best player.
[00:28:54] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's a contrast with Beast Children where the main character that Sakura I think was
[00:28:59] [SPEAKER_03]: like instantly really good at rugby.
[00:29:02] [SPEAKER_03]: He was like because he was he'd been obsessed with rugby and stuff.
[00:29:05] [SPEAKER_03]: What he did here was just way better.
[00:29:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I've never seen an improvement like this in manga at the end of the day.
[00:29:09] [SPEAKER_02]: I was in awe of reading this that this was the same guy as Beast Children.
[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I was constantly like genuinely I want to see what happens next.
[00:29:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I really want to follow these characters.
[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm really upset that I can't follow Oga's story about more.
[00:29:23] [SPEAKER_02]: And you know what's crazy speaking of robot laser beam?
[00:29:24] [SPEAKER_02]: This actually made me feel like golf may be physically taxing because they actually showed
[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_02]: it at a scale that seemed reasonable.
[00:29:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[00:29:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[00:29:31] [SPEAKER_02]: She actually fucked up her elbow and played through it and had repercussions.
[00:29:34] [SPEAKER_02]: He golfed for hours at the driving range.
[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_02]: That is fair for him to be exhausted doing that.
[00:29:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Robot laser beam the guy is like tired after like three holes and walking maybe a mile
[00:29:42] [SPEAKER_02]: at like 18 years old.
[00:29:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Just like me.
[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_02]: No one fucking believes that you are tired.
[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_03]: That's the thing.
[00:29:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I remember years ago there was all this controversy because there was a golfer who had he was like
[00:29:54] [SPEAKER_03]: a pro golfer but he had asthma and he needed like a golf cart that which was extremely controversial
[00:29:59] [SPEAKER_03]: because walking those 10 kilometers is part of the game.
[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_03]: That's not fair for him being able to do that without getting tired whereas everybody
[00:30:09] [SPEAKER_03]: else has to keep walking all that distance.
[00:30:11] [SPEAKER_03]: So yeah when he's oh my god my legs are killing me it's like yeah no that is a significant
[00:30:17] [SPEAKER_03]: part of golf.
[00:30:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:30:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Like you walk 10 kilometers that's that's six miles.
[00:30:20] [SPEAKER_02]: It's not nothing.
[00:30:21] [SPEAKER_02]: That's it.
[00:30:22] [SPEAKER_02]: That's a shitload of walking.
[00:30:23] [SPEAKER_02]: And carrying like what 20 pounds of clubs the whole time.
[00:30:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:30:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And then Brenda how about you.
[00:30:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Was there anything we haven't brought up yet.
[00:30:28] [SPEAKER_01]: I really like how the relationship between Yaesaki and Oga progressed and how Oga does
[00:30:34] [SPEAKER_01]: not like him at all at the beginning but just from him learning to respect golf as a sport
[00:30:39] [SPEAKER_01]: and learning to understand what she loves about it.
[00:30:42] [SPEAKER_01]: She starts to really like him as time goes on like fairly quickly which I assume is in part
[00:30:47] [SPEAKER_01]: because of how short it is but like just very very nice interactions with them and it's
[00:30:52] [SPEAKER_01]: very cool seeing like at the start of the series her straight up saying I hate you to like him
[00:30:58] [SPEAKER_01]: being like the only person she's really being emotional around and the only person she even
[00:31:03] [SPEAKER_01]: really jokes with.
[00:31:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:31:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Very nice interactions and it makes me very sad that I won't get to see how that progresses
[00:31:09] [SPEAKER_01]: especially like later when they both go on to play professionally like what is it gonna
[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_01]: be like when they're playing against each other professionally like it makes me so sad not knowing
[00:31:19] [SPEAKER_01]: what's gonna happen with that.
[00:31:20] [SPEAKER_03]: I know there's like this big thing where she gradually starts to really gain trust and
[00:31:26] [SPEAKER_03]: respect for this guy where it is like she's able to be emotional around him and let her
[00:31:32] [SPEAKER_03]: guard down which she's.
[00:31:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah the crying seems a very very brave choice but I think a good one from the author.
[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah it's the best chapter honestly.
[00:31:39] [SPEAKER_03]: It's really good.
[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_03]: She cries and you understand why she's crying you understand the emotions behind it because
[00:31:46] [SPEAKER_03]: it is golf as they show is very much a game about how tiny mistakes can cost you like titles.
[00:31:54] [SPEAKER_03]: She was ahead and then she went behind because she fucked up one hole.
[00:31:56] [SPEAKER_03]: She fucked up one hole and all of a sudden she was out of first place and yeah that would
[00:32:01] [SPEAKER_03]: that would absolutely just like destroy you inside.
[00:32:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Especially because it's not a team sport so it's hard for you not to 100% blame yourself
[00:32:09] [SPEAKER_02]: for anything that happens during a match.
[00:32:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:32:10] [SPEAKER_02]: You can't say oh you didn't you didn't catch this or you didn't read my single it is on
[00:32:14] [SPEAKER_02]: you every decision you make ultimately falls on you which it's interesting how things like
[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_02]: RTS is like Starcraft have become less popular over things like MOBA because by having teammates
[00:32:23] [SPEAKER_02]: and made people feel like it was less their fault because in Starcraft if you lose you can't
[00:32:27] [SPEAKER_02]: blame anyone for yourself and people really hated that feeling.
[00:32:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah no I don't I don't blame them that it's tough.
[00:32:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I also want to say at that note of the ending that was a great final page.
[00:32:35] [SPEAKER_02]: I wasn't sure how the series was going to do it because Brenda most series there's
[00:32:38] [SPEAKER_02]: like three different standard endings where it's either they time skip to the end they
[00:32:42] [SPEAKER_02]: shock on the ending or they just kind of pretend the series isn't ending and this is definitely
[00:32:46] [SPEAKER_02]: more of like didn't pretend the series was ending but the author clearly knew it and I
[00:32:49] [SPEAKER_02]: like how he was like this is all the time I had I didn't want to just ruin the pace of
[00:32:52] [SPEAKER_02]: the last few chapters I wanted to just finish this character arc even if it's not the end
[00:32:56] [SPEAKER_02]: of the series arc.
[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_02]: And I think that was a really great choice and a very self-reflective last page where he
[00:33:00] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure no one thinks Beast Children was awful more than this offer did.
[00:33:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:33:05] [SPEAKER_01]: When the first sentence on the last page is it's okay to fail.
[00:33:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:33:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Like he's optimistic and I don't think this series was a failure.
[00:33:12] [SPEAKER_02]: No.
[00:33:13] [SPEAKER_02]: It is the reader's fault for any non-flop series I got canceled.
[00:33:16] [SPEAKER_02]: That's and that's a rock fact.
[00:33:17] [SPEAKER_02]: I do think though for the sake of time we need to get on to where it could have gone okay.
[00:33:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:33:21] [SPEAKER_02]: All right now that we've talked about positives let's get into where it could have gone.
[00:33:24] [SPEAKER_02]: I know I complained about being in the driving range but I was imagining what if this series
[00:33:27] [SPEAKER_02]: was only about staying at the driving range and they never actually play a game of golf
[00:33:31] [SPEAKER_02]: and that's like the joke is they keep delaying them actually playing golf and there's like
[00:33:34] [SPEAKER_02]: different random reasons they don't actually golf in the series.
[00:33:38] [SPEAKER_02]: God.
[00:33:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Which probably for a real gag manga that actually could have been in a concept.
[00:33:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh my God.
[00:33:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Just call it when do we play golf.
[00:33:45] [SPEAKER_03]: I really wanted to see as we mentioned like a few times Yaesaki and Oga's relationship develop
[00:33:53] [SPEAKER_03]: you know like Full Drive.
[00:33:54] [SPEAKER_03]: I do want to say one thing about the ending.
[00:33:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Full Drive did this bullshit thing where it flashed forward three years and the main male
[00:34:02] [SPEAKER_03]: character and the main female character were suddenly boyfriend and girlfriend and you
[00:34:05] [SPEAKER_03]: didn't see any of the build up.
[00:34:07] [SPEAKER_03]: I was really worried this series was going to do that and it didn't so I appreciate that
[00:34:11] [SPEAKER_03]: but I really would have liked to see their relationship kind of grow and I don't just mean like a
[00:34:16] [SPEAKER_03]: romantic relationship.
[00:34:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean like relationship platonic or otherwise because it was really interesting how they
[00:34:22] [SPEAKER_03]: were like getting closer and closer in a very understandable way and I think that it would
[00:34:27] [SPEAKER_03]: have built more on that.
[00:34:29] [SPEAKER_03]: We obviously know that at some point Yaesaki was going to compete in the Masters Tournament
[00:34:33] [SPEAKER_03]: because the series starts out with a flash forward to when he's competing in the Masters Tournament.
[00:34:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:34:39] [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah like I wanted I wanted to see that progression.
[00:34:42] [SPEAKER_03]: I want to see where Oga's going.
[00:34:44] [SPEAKER_03]: You know what happens when she gets to America.
[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_01]: A lot of the stuff I said like I just I really would have loved to see their relationship
[00:34:50] [SPEAKER_01]: develop.
[00:34:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I would have loved to see what how how becoming professional golfers would have changed Yaesaki
[00:34:56] [SPEAKER_01]: and Oga's relationship.
[00:34:59] [SPEAKER_01]: How how things might have changed like after she went to America and and spent time there
[00:35:05] [SPEAKER_01]: like just a lot of thought of potential and a lot of possibilities and a lot of stuff it
[00:35:09] [SPEAKER_01]: was kind of building towards and like it hurts my soul.
[00:35:14] [SPEAKER_01]: This isn't like the best series ever but man I wish I could have seen where it would go.
[00:35:18] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm genuinely shocked.
[00:35:20] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm genuinely amazed.
[00:35:21] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean as for like the America thing I was I am kind of thinking well there's a few ways
[00:35:25] [SPEAKER_03]: they could have gone about that.
[00:35:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Either it meant Yaesaki would be alone and developing since he is the POV character or
[00:35:32] [SPEAKER_03]: he would have somehow gone to America with Oga.
[00:35:35] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's like I don't know what would have happened there but I hope that the author would
[00:35:38] [SPEAKER_03]: have found a way to not break them up because that's the most compelling part of the series
[00:35:42] [SPEAKER_03]: I think.
[00:35:42] [SPEAKER_01]: I think in a way if they did kind of get split up for a while that could have been interesting
[00:35:47] [SPEAKER_01]: in itself because like Yaesaki is like and Oga even mentions it near the end like his swing
[00:35:53] [SPEAKER_01]: is just based on her swing and the way he plays golf is like just based on her.
[00:35:58] [SPEAKER_01]: So how would things develop and change between them when he doesn't have her to imitate and
[00:36:03] [SPEAKER_01]: he does have to come into his own as a golfer like so many interesting ways this could have
[00:36:08] [SPEAKER_01]: gone.
[00:36:08] [SPEAKER_01]: That would have been really cool.
[00:36:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I really liked that aspect of it because like you know look I'm I'm an artist and
[00:36:15] [SPEAKER_03]: it's very easy to compare yourself to other people.
[00:36:18] [SPEAKER_03]: It's very easy to be like well I'm not as good at this as them.
[00:36:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I want to be them but you can't you know you're you.
[00:36:25] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's like you have to compare yourself to how you were in the past.
[00:36:28] [SPEAKER_03]: That's the only way to do it and to try and get better each time.
[00:36:31] [SPEAKER_03]: And I really liked that this series was talking about that.
[00:36:35] [SPEAKER_02]: I think one last thing also in terms of growth and stuff that I thought was really cool that
[00:36:39] [SPEAKER_02]: felt like it was discarded a little bit is Oliver has like very poor social skills and
[00:36:43] [SPEAKER_02]: the main character was kind of trading golf lessons for like social etiquette lessons and
[00:36:46] [SPEAKER_02]: helping him like find friends and stuff.
[00:36:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Not like you know transactional way but like as how friends do.
[00:36:50] [SPEAKER_02]: And I think that was actually a really cool theme for how someone is working with someone
[00:36:55] [SPEAKER_02]: who is a savant in the sport that they want to get better at.
[00:36:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:36:57] [SPEAKER_02]: You know it's kind of I don't know it just reminds me of like the Michael and Michael thing where
[00:37:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Michael Jordan taught Michael Jackson how to play basketball and Michael Jackson taught
[00:37:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Michael Jordan how to dance.
[00:37:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Really?
[00:37:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Which is like peak 90s.
[00:37:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah that was a thing they did.
[00:37:08] [SPEAKER_02]: That is the most 90s thing I've ever heard.
[00:37:10] [SPEAKER_02]: So that would have been I think that's a very cool theme and I think the author just didn't
[00:37:14] [SPEAKER_02]: have time for it but hopefully I wish they could have circled back into that being more
[00:37:17] [SPEAKER_02]: of a topic in there.
[00:37:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:37:18] [SPEAKER_02]: In this manga.
[00:37:19] [SPEAKER_02]: All right since we're getting into random thoughts let's get into Mancelini's thoughts.
[00:37:22] [SPEAKER_02]: So this actually makes me think of Time Paradox Ghost Rider where the author of that
[00:37:26] [SPEAKER_02]: is like a mediocre mangaka and he gets like in a time stop and he keeps working on manga
[00:37:30] [SPEAKER_02]: and making full series until he makes like the ultimate series and it's kind of like
[00:37:33] [SPEAKER_02]: how did he get this good in four years without having some sort of time stopping device to
[00:37:37] [SPEAKER_02]: practice.
[00:37:38] [SPEAKER_03]: It almost makes me feel like this series is like kind of autobiographical because he
[00:37:43] [SPEAKER_03]: started we see him at the beginning with Beast Children and he sucks.
[00:37:47] [SPEAKER_03]: He's not good at it.
[00:37:48] [SPEAKER_03]: But then like over the period that period of time he was clearly grinding.
[00:37:52] [SPEAKER_03]: He was like working.
[00:37:53] [SPEAKER_03]: He was like finding out like his own style like and he was trying to figure out well
[00:37:58] [SPEAKER_03]: what what can I do here?
[00:38:00] [SPEAKER_03]: What's what works for me?
[00:38:01] [SPEAKER_03]: And I think he really found it or at least he's really onto something here.
[00:38:06] [SPEAKER_03]: This series there's an aspect to it that feels personal.
[00:38:09] [SPEAKER_02]: And then how about you Brenda?
[00:38:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Was there anything that you feel like you haven't a chance to say yet?
[00:38:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Great lettering in this series.
[00:38:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Great lettering!
[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Is there any interesting tidbits from a lettering perspective you want to talk about?
[00:38:19] [SPEAKER_01]: There is one thing that I really like.
[00:38:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah!
[00:38:21] [SPEAKER_01]: In chapter five title for the series and the chapter title and the author name were like
[00:38:26] [SPEAKER_01]: integrated into the art.
[00:38:28] [SPEAKER_01]: And I got to like put the translator and letterer credit like on the little screen with those.
[00:38:32] [SPEAKER_01]: And that was a very cool thing.
[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_01]: And it felt very cool to like blend my credit into the artwork in a way that people are going
[00:38:39] [SPEAKER_01]: to actually be looking at it.
[00:38:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that is sick.
[00:38:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Otherwise, not not a honestly, you guys like compelled me to say a lot more than I thought
[00:38:47] [SPEAKER_01]: I would have to say already.
[00:38:49] [SPEAKER_01]: So it's it's hard to think of anything else now.
[00:38:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you guys like your your experienced podcast.
[00:38:55] [SPEAKER_02]: We've been there 112 episodes deep.
[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_02]: So I hope so.
[00:38:58] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought you were gonna get some nitty gritty where it's like I'm thinking about fuck
[00:39:01] [SPEAKER_02]: what's the new that guy from Parks and Rec then?
[00:39:03] [SPEAKER_02]: And you're like, so actually on page 12 of chapter seven, normally use a 12.
[00:39:07] [SPEAKER_02]: But I actually use size 13 font because I thought that'd make a little bit interesting.
[00:39:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Just a little joke to my fellow letterers, you know, real glad editorial didn't notice
[00:39:15] [SPEAKER_02]: or I'd have been in trouble.
[00:39:16] [SPEAKER_03]: In this chapter, I used the slightly less bold version of the font, you know, just to
[00:39:24] [SPEAKER_03]: kind of mix things up.
[00:39:26] [SPEAKER_03]: You see this, this letter over here, it was a little too heavy to convey the proper emotion
[00:39:31] [SPEAKER_03]: of the scene.
[00:39:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I felt I feel Brendan's being very quiet.
[00:39:34] [SPEAKER_02]: So I think we're deeply insulting his work.
[00:39:36] [SPEAKER_02]: No, no, no, you're good.
[00:39:37] [SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, no.
[00:39:38] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm appreciating it.
[00:39:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I also want to say I feel Oliver is the main character's Kamina from Gurren Lagann where
[00:39:44] [SPEAKER_02]: I was actually surprised to not see where he just punches him in the face and he's like,
[00:39:47] [SPEAKER_02]: are you going to get better at golf or not?
[00:39:48] [SPEAKER_02]: They're so crying in golf.
[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Oliver was a great character.
[00:39:52] [SPEAKER_02]: I loved him.
[00:39:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Also, when he, Oliver talked about top schools and he's like mentioning actual legit golf
[00:39:56] [SPEAKER_02]: schools, I thought he was going to put a joke in where it's like Stanford,
[00:39:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Yale, Alabama and be like Delaware Community College, the big four of golf schools
[00:40:04] [SPEAKER_02]: in America.
[00:40:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my God.
[00:40:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Speaking of great characters, we have Maxie B who has provided us some wonderful trivia
[00:40:09] [SPEAKER_02]: where they say the author's avatar has changed instead of a rugby head.
[00:40:13] [SPEAKER_02]: For obvious reasons, it replaced by a golem in a hoodie because apparently as a kid, he
[00:40:16] [SPEAKER_02]: liked golems in Monster Rancher.
[00:40:18] [SPEAKER_02]: So did I.
[00:40:19] [SPEAKER_02]: He also apparently is a very accomplished Street Fighter 6 player where he was master rank with
[00:40:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Luke, but then got his ass handed to him by the offer of undead unlock.
[00:40:29] [SPEAKER_02]: But he said that they are friends and that's really sweet.
[00:40:31] [SPEAKER_02]: And much like me, he owns 1700 PC games.
[00:40:35] [SPEAKER_02]: So he's probably personally.
[00:40:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Those fucking steam sales, man.
[00:40:39] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know how he has time to play it.
[00:40:40] [SPEAKER_02]: It says he owns them.
[00:40:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Not that he plays them.
[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_02]: And also to confirm the real life Masters tournament took place during the run in April
[00:40:47] [SPEAKER_02]: 2024.
[00:40:48] [SPEAKER_02]: So it was absolutely.
[00:40:50] [SPEAKER_02]: It was absolutely on purpose.
[00:40:51] [SPEAKER_02]: And much like.
[00:40:52] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm glad that it got extra time.
[00:40:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Unlike beast.
[00:40:55] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it should have gotten about 400 more chapters worth of extra time.
[00:40:59] [SPEAKER_03]: But I think I would have been fine with that.
[00:41:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:41:01] [SPEAKER_03]: If it kept up this level of quality.
[00:41:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:41:03] [SPEAKER_02]: And apparently he still to this day live streams him drawing these characters.
[00:41:07] [SPEAKER_02]: So he's very attached to this cast.
[00:41:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:41:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Maxie B also says there's volume extras, but for the interest of time, unfortunately, we're
[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_02]: going to have to skip that.
[00:41:14] [SPEAKER_02]: But you can read Maxie B's full notes on the Patreon.
[00:41:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:41:17] [SPEAKER_02]: All right.
[00:41:17] [SPEAKER_02]: And now let's get.
[00:41:18] [SPEAKER_02]: And speaking of things wrapping up, let's get into final verdict.
[00:41:20] [SPEAKER_02]: All right.
[00:41:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's get started with six words from Tucker.
[00:41:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Good, good, good.
[00:41:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Why ax ax?
[00:41:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Fuck.
[00:41:23] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, dude.
[00:41:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Maxie B jump readers touch green, green.
[00:41:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Artil said Mulligan Mulligan fairway green double bogey.
[00:41:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Ball said.
[00:41:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought it was just OK.
[00:41:33] [SPEAKER_02]: That's incorrect.
[00:41:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Blah, Moo Moo.
[00:41:34] [SPEAKER_02]: This should have been a hit.
[00:41:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Chicken Warlord piano to wholeheartedly loving your hobbies.
[00:41:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Diego, was that a robot laser beam reference?
[00:41:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Robot laser beam.
[00:41:42] [SPEAKER_02]: And then I think he wanted to make that.
[00:41:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Is that a Jojo reference?
[00:41:45] [SPEAKER_02]: He said he didn't have time to edit the image.
[00:41:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Funky Act 4 said.
[00:41:48] [SPEAKER_02]: I like golf.
[00:41:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Quit being mean.
[00:41:49] [SPEAKER_02]: And this one is very Hunter Hunter inspired.
[00:41:51] [SPEAKER_02]: It said robot laser beam.
[00:41:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Good writing with the unpronounced X's.
[00:41:55] [SPEAKER_02]: So it's robot X laser.
[00:41:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:41:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Glornak iron spot.
[00:41:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Ironically scored too low for jump.
[00:42:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:42:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Gray Potter golf manga.
[00:42:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Not up to par.
[00:42:02] [SPEAKER_02]: And flop.
[00:42:02] [SPEAKER_02]: No, the children are wrong.
[00:42:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Correct.
[00:42:05] [SPEAKER_02]: As I noted, someone explicitly said that as their six word summary.
[00:42:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Isakai sensei.
[00:42:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Great.
[00:42:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Gave glorious gleaming golf gift.
[00:42:11] [SPEAKER_02]: JRPG astrologist.
[00:42:13] [SPEAKER_02]: The best failure there yet was.
[00:42:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Captain Clueless.
[00:42:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Seven points over par for U19.
[00:42:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Last of the red rose.
[00:42:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Made the flop board care about golf.
[00:42:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's correct.
[00:42:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Luffy expertly put it straight into our hearts.
[00:42:24] [SPEAKER_03]: And then Meru.
[00:42:26] [SPEAKER_03]: GGG's undoing nonwithstanding.
[00:42:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Definitely amazing manga.
[00:42:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Portal Man.
[00:42:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Manga couldn't even catch any green.
[00:42:33] [SPEAKER_03]: And should have lasted longer than robot laser beam.
[00:42:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, pretty much.
[00:42:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Yep.
[00:42:37] [SPEAKER_03]: S. Bubby.
[00:42:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I will never forgive the Japanese.
[00:42:41] [SPEAKER_03]: With a part three Joseph image.
[00:42:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Spike.
[00:42:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Growing one step at a time.
[00:42:47] [SPEAKER_03]: And a hole in one bounces out.
[00:42:49] [SPEAKER_03]: The wolf.
[00:42:49] [SPEAKER_03]: The wood.
[00:42:50] [SPEAKER_03]: The Trafalgar.
[00:42:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Made my least favorite sport.
[00:42:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Interesting.
[00:42:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Aura Paladin.
[00:42:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Slow start.
[00:42:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Slay superb sports series.
[00:42:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Dackerson.
[00:42:58] [SPEAKER_03]: She cried.
[00:42:59] [SPEAKER_03]: He cried.
[00:42:59] [SPEAKER_03]: We cried.
[00:43:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Lord Anubis.
[00:43:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Gone in one, two, three, four.
[00:43:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Red Blade.
[00:43:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Yellow with joy.
[00:43:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Blue with sorrow.
[00:43:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Resident Warhammer nerd.
[00:43:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Chapters under par.
[00:43:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Should have gotten Mulligan.
[00:43:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Riley.
[00:43:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Beast Children manga.
[00:43:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Golf manga.
[00:43:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Good.
[00:43:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Scott.
[00:43:15] [SPEAKER_03]: The sports manga we needed, but.
[00:43:17] [SPEAKER_02]: And then Jordan, how about yours?
[00:43:18] [SPEAKER_02]: From Beast Child to Golf Adult.
[00:43:20] [SPEAKER_02]: That's a good one.
[00:43:21] [SPEAKER_02]: And mine was when nothing's about golf, everything is.
[00:43:24] [SPEAKER_02]: And then, Brendo, how about you?
[00:43:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Top tier green.
[00:43:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
[00:43:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Golf's epic.
[00:43:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I like it.
[00:43:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Wonderful.
[00:43:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I like it.
[00:43:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Wonderful.
[00:43:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I have a good feeling.
[00:43:32] [SPEAKER_02]: We all agree this is not a flop.
[00:43:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Holy shit.
[00:43:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Right?
[00:43:35] [SPEAKER_02]: No, this is not a flop.
[00:43:37] [SPEAKER_01]: God, no.
[00:43:38] [SPEAKER_02]: What the fuck?
[00:43:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Where did this come from?
[00:43:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Holy shit, dude.
[00:43:42] [SPEAKER_02]: This is me.
[00:43:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Jordan, I took on a rock leaf to discuss if this is the strongest thing we've read on this show.
[00:43:47] [SPEAKER_02]: I know.
[00:43:48] [SPEAKER_03]: It's beautiful, David.
[00:43:49] [SPEAKER_03]: It is so inspiring.
[00:43:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I love that.
[00:43:52] [SPEAKER_03]: I need to get the tier list up.
[00:43:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Here's the thing.
[00:43:54] [SPEAKER_03]: I think this might be the strongest genuine flop because Tricks Dedicated to Witches.
[00:44:00] [SPEAKER_03]: He quit.
[00:44:01] [SPEAKER_03]: He quit.
[00:44:01] [SPEAKER_03]: He didn't get canceled.
[00:44:02] [SPEAKER_03]: It's at least up there with Time Paradox Ghost Rider.
[00:44:05] [SPEAKER_02]: It's up there.
[00:44:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:44:06] [SPEAKER_02]: So Time Paradox Ghost Rider, I feel is a turnist because it really just, if you retconned it
[00:44:10] [SPEAKER_02]: into a mini series, you wouldn't have any issues with that.
[00:44:13] [SPEAKER_03]: It would have gotten worse if it kept going, but it got canceled at like the exact right
[00:44:17] [SPEAKER_03]: time.
[00:44:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Actually, it's the only series to have benefited from getting canceled about we've ever read.
[00:44:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:44:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[00:44:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Tricks Dedicated to Witches actually is currently what we consider the best one we've ever read.
[00:44:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And then Time Paradox Ghost Rider.
[00:44:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Those are the two S tier series.
[00:44:29] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, Brennan, have you read either of those?
[00:44:31] [SPEAKER_02]: I read the first one or two chapters of Ghost Rider and that's about it.
[00:44:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, Tricks Dedicated was also super, super fun to read.
[00:44:38] [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, that series, as we mentioned, didn't get canceled.
[00:44:42] [SPEAKER_03]: The author just quit.
[00:44:43] [SPEAKER_03]: He ran out of ideas.
[00:44:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:44:45] [SPEAKER_02]: So Jordan, right now, the highest ranked normal series we have read is Hard Boiled Cop and
[00:44:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Dolphin.
[00:44:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Ooh, this is tough.
[00:44:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Is this better than Hard Boiled Cop and Dolphin?
[00:44:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, this is so tough.
[00:44:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Have you read that one, Brennan?
[00:44:57] [SPEAKER_02]: I have not.
[00:44:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't have time to read.
[00:44:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm littering.
[00:45:00] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if this is better than Hard Boiled Cop and Dolphin, but like it's in the conversation.
[00:45:05] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
[00:45:06] [SPEAKER_02]: I feel like Hard Boiled Cop and Dolphin told a full story arc as well, even though blatantly
[00:45:10] [SPEAKER_02]: ended.
[00:45:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's the thing.
[00:45:12] [SPEAKER_02]: This one just is, all right, that's all the time I had, which is fine, but it also makes
[00:45:16] [SPEAKER_02]: it less of a comprehensive package.
[00:45:18] [SPEAKER_03]: I think that this is the flop series we read that we most want to keep going.
[00:45:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
[00:45:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I think that is unquestionable because, yeah, I feel satisfied with the ending of Hard Boiled
[00:45:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Cop and Dolphin, but I am not satisfied with the ending of Green, Green, Greens.
[00:45:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I needed to keep going.
[00:45:34] [SPEAKER_02]: My favorite part, though, Brendo, of Hard Boiled Cop and Dolphin.
[00:45:37] [SPEAKER_02]: So there is a guy who turns into a dolphin and Jordan had a guess that the main character
[00:45:41] [SPEAKER_02]: was going to turn into like a shark or something because it's set like in an island and it has
[00:45:44] [SPEAKER_02]: to do with like Neptune or like Atlantis and shit.
[00:45:46] [SPEAKER_02]: And there is a scene at the very last chapter, like some of the final pages, you see someone
[00:45:51] [SPEAKER_02]: who is a shark man dressed like the main character surfing.
[00:45:54] [SPEAKER_02]: And then the main character comes out and says, oh, look at that guy.
[00:45:58] [SPEAKER_02]: And I just vividly remember how Jordan got so fucking mad that the author knew everyone
[00:46:03] [SPEAKER_02]: thought he was going to turn into a shark at the end of the series and just put a giant
[00:46:07] [SPEAKER_02]: middle finger to Jordan on the like the last page of the series.
[00:46:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Me specifically.
[00:46:12] [SPEAKER_02]: It was such a beautiful ending.
[00:46:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Amazing.
[00:46:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, so God, I don't remember the last time we had a serious conversation.
[00:46:18] [SPEAKER_02]: If this is the best, the floppies, this is not going to be a hard floppies this year.
[00:46:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Whoa.
[00:46:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Unless there's something that the next three weeks, the next three episodes really weighs
[00:46:26] [SPEAKER_02]: up.
[00:46:26] [SPEAKER_02]: I am shocked.
[00:46:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's get into a wrap up.
[00:46:29] [SPEAKER_02]: I can't believe Beast Children.
[00:46:31] [SPEAKER_02]: The Beast Children offer is in the top five things we've ever read in this for this
[00:46:35] [SPEAKER_02]: podcast.
[00:46:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Incredible.
[00:46:36] [SPEAKER_02]: He's at the top and the bottom.
[00:46:37] [SPEAKER_02]: He's like, God, whoa.
[00:46:39] [SPEAKER_01]: He's the bookend.
[00:46:40] [SPEAKER_01]: You got to end it now.
[00:46:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:46:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:46:43] [SPEAKER_02]: God.
[00:46:44] [SPEAKER_02]: All right.
[00:46:44] [SPEAKER_02]: But we are going to end this podcast now with our wrap up.
[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_02]: So let's do it.
[00:46:48] [SPEAKER_02]: So I want to say, Brandon, thank you so much for not only being a fantastic guest, but your
[00:46:52] [SPEAKER_02]: amazing work on an absolute treasure of a series.

[00:46:59] [SPEAKER_01]: You can you can follow me on Twitter at Letterer Brendo.
[00:47:03] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't tweet that much about work, but I'll just I don't know.
[00:47:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I'll just tweet shit.
[00:47:07] [SPEAKER_01]: If I letter something really cool, I'll probably share it.
[00:47:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:47:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Follow me, I guess.
[00:47:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:47:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:47:12] [SPEAKER_02]: People may not have heard of.
[00:47:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I guess what is the series you're working on right now that you wish more people were
[00:47:16] [SPEAKER_02]: reading?
[00:47:17] [SPEAKER_01]: DRCL Midnight Children.
[00:47:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Everyone, please read that.
[00:47:20] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a shame the series wasn't bad or that could have been your recommendation.
[00:47:23] [SPEAKER_01]: No, that series is really good.
[00:47:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Both of you.
[00:47:26] [SPEAKER_01]: The DRCL part is actually pronounced Dracula.
[00:47:30] [SPEAKER_03]: It's hashtag DRCL.
[00:47:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow.
[00:47:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I love it.

[00:47:35] [SPEAKER_02]: That sounds good to me.
[00:47:36] [SPEAKER_02]: I also want to give props to Jordan for making the opening ending thing, being a great co-host

[00:49:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Hell yeah.
[00:49:11] [SPEAKER_02]: We're looking at the prototypes of some series we covered.
[00:49:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:49:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Which one?
[00:49:14] [SPEAKER_02]: To be determined.
[00:49:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Because I forgot that's what we were doing.
[00:49:17] [SPEAKER_02]: All right.

[00:49:28] [SPEAKER_02]: That was a good conversation.
[00:49:30] [SPEAKER_02]: We got a little woke.
[00:49:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Our warmup or our recording notes.
[00:49:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we got a little bit woke in that one.
[00:49:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Sorry, guys.
[00:49:35] [SPEAKER_02]: We're always woke.
[00:49:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Just some libs in here.

[00:49:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Did you know, fun fact, that apparently if you...
[00:49:51] [SPEAKER_02]: She's from Florida, so apparently it's a giant flex to go to Disneyland as someone from Florida.
[00:49:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Really?
[00:49:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, Disneyland.
[00:49:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I see.
[00:49:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:49:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:49:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Because it's like, you're doing it just to flex on people.
[00:50:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Sichuan.
[00:50:01] [SPEAKER_02]: And Sichuan, did you know that you smell different when you're awake?
[00:50:04] [SPEAKER_02]: See you tonight.
