[00:00:28] Welcome to this episode of Shonen Flop where we talk about manga and shonen jump that didn't make it big. I'm David.
[00:00:32] I'm Jordan.
[00:00:33] Next week we'll be covering Dear Animonet if you'd like to read along with us.
[00:00:37] That's definitely how you pronounce that.
[00:00:38] Go with the spiciest way of saying that word.
[00:00:41] Be sure to join the discussion in our discord and submit your six word summary.
[00:00:44] You can find a link to the discord in our episode description and on our website shownonflop.com.
[00:00:48] But this week we are talking about Psych House in the middle of the street and we are joined by our guest Solomon.
[00:00:54] Solomon, thank you so much for joining us today.
[00:00:55] Thank you.
[00:00:56] No, thank you guys.
[00:00:57] Thank you guys for having me.
[00:00:58] Do you mind telling lines a little bit about yourself?
[00:01:00] Hi, I'm Solomon.
[00:01:01] Generally you find me is like I'm King Solomander most places, but I stream a little bit and I host a one piece watch through slash watch along podcast with two of my best friends.
[00:01:10] But we're not on it.
[00:01:11] What's it called?
[00:01:12] It is One Journey.
[00:01:13] Ooh.
[00:01:13] Ooh.
[00:01:14] Very fun because I have a guy who watches anime, doesn't watch one piece and another guy who hates anime.
[00:01:20] So do you record it with the anime out of context guys?
[00:01:23] Who do you think his two best friends are?
[00:01:24] Sometimes I think so.
[00:01:26] Till's going to be like, wait a second.
[00:01:28] Wait a minute.
[00:01:29] Are you Dylan?
[00:01:31] And he just, his voice just suddenly changes and it's Dylan.
[00:01:34] My voice drops like four octaves.
[00:01:38] You thought your guest was Solomon, but no, it was me, Dylan.
[00:01:44] I also want to say that, Solomon, thank you so much for both being a patron and filling out the Be A Guest form.
[00:01:49] We always love to look through it, so we appreciate you wanting to be on the show.
[00:01:52] And we always try and find opportunities to have both people who are patrons and people who fill out that form on the show.
[00:01:57] With that in mind, I'd be curious.
[00:01:59] This is a shameless plug.
[00:01:59] What made you want to be a patron?
[00:02:00] Honestly, I'm a patron of a couple of different things.
[00:02:03] I like to support just guys or anyone who I just tend to enjoy their content, really, as best I can.
[00:02:08] Nothing special about us.
[00:02:10] Great job, David.
[00:02:11] Great, great job with trying to get this plug now.
[00:02:14] No, I will say, like, I work like 5 a.m. shifts and whenever you guys have an episode that I haven't listened to, that 5 a.m., I'm like, ah, this will help.
[00:02:21] Hell yeah.
[00:02:22] Hell yeah.
[00:02:23] This is going to keep me laughing through the morning.
[00:02:26] Oh, well, we appreciate it.
[00:02:28] I guess the floppies are coming up.
[00:02:30] Is there anything you're really open for when this episode of the year that's coming out?
[00:02:32] You guys have covered some bad shit this year.
[00:02:35] Yeah, we really have, haven't we?
[00:02:38] Yeah, we have.
[00:02:39] I mean, it's pretty much green, green, green sweep on the positive categories.
[00:02:43] Let's not really play any fucking games this year, right?
[00:02:46] I was so sad when that got canceled.
[00:02:49] I know.
[00:02:50] I don't know if there's anything remotely challenging it this year.
[00:02:55] I mean, what else is there?
[00:02:56] Mama Yu Yu or fucking the MMA manga?
[00:02:59] Oh, the MMA one I actually really enjoyed too, though.
[00:03:02] Yeah, I liked that.
[00:03:03] But it's like, Grinker Grades is the only one where we were just flat out, no, this is good.
[00:03:07] But also, I almost wish that when David said Psych House, I already made this joke on Chainsaw Minute,
[00:03:12] but we just suddenly stopped and started talking about an episode of House.
[00:03:18] Or Corey in the House.
[00:03:19] I've never seen either one.
[00:03:20] Well, that's my favorite anime.
[00:03:22] There's something canceled about Corey in the House.
[00:03:24] Anime Out of Context removed mentions of it from their Patreon.
[00:03:28] So something happened where they took it off and they replaced it with the Joey Wheeler.
[00:03:32] This is like, Anime Out of Context heads can back me up.
[00:03:35] This is part of, like, Corey in the House would definitely be a part of the Anime Out of Context iceberg,
[00:03:39] which is a reference to the Shonen Flop iceberg, which is, I will say, if you don't normally listen to warm-up audio,
[00:03:44] that was a very wild warm-up audio that we had.
[00:03:47] It was pretty good.
[00:03:48] That was probably one's best warm-up audio if that was a category.
[00:03:52] It might be worth maybe subscribing to the Patreon if you want to hear it.
[00:03:55] Subtle, Jordan.
[00:03:56] And remember...
[00:03:57] It's a good thing to be subscribed to.
[00:03:59] They're funny, usually.
[00:04:00] Jordan is like that dude from, whatchamacallit, Dark Place,
[00:04:03] where he was like, I know authors that use subtext and they're all cowards.
[00:04:06] Yeah.
[00:04:07] You mean the main guy from Dark Place, Garth Marenghi?
[00:04:10] Yeah, there we go.
[00:04:11] Yeah.
[00:04:11] Fuck, I love that line.
[00:04:12] Blood, blood, blood, bloods and bits of sick.
[00:04:15] Anyway, let's get into actually talking about this manga.
[00:04:17] How does that sound?
[00:04:18] Oh, man, but there's so much to talk about besides the manga.
[00:04:23] But I guess that's the premise of the show.
[00:04:27] Let's get into the manga details.
[00:04:29] Tucker says that the title is probably going for some kind of play on Psyche,
[00:04:35] which is Saiku and Cycle.
[00:04:39] Saikuru.
[00:04:40] So it's like a pun.
[00:04:41] And yeah, this is called Saiku Byori.
[00:04:44] That's the Japanese title.
[00:04:45] And Byori is likely a term for, as Tucker says, ideal weather, sort of maybe activity.
[00:04:50] And so apparently all together, it sounds like a perfect day to go cycling.
[00:04:55] How nice.
[00:04:55] And also a perfect day for using our psychs.
[00:04:58] We'll get into it, but the title of this series is kind of crazy in Japanese.
[00:05:02] Yeah, he went through like what, like 20 fucking.
[00:05:06] He made like 20 different logos, too, for each idea he had.
[00:05:09] Yeah, this guy tried really hard with like a shitload of different ideas.
[00:05:13] And this was apparently the best he could come up with.
[00:05:16] Yeah, we actually did reach out to Jan,
[00:05:18] who was a prior guest in the official transglomerate of the series.
[00:05:20] And she was like, they just told me to call it Psych House.
[00:05:23] So she was not involved in the decision.
[00:05:25] Though apparently the English name Psych House
[00:05:27] was one of the names they considered for the series in Japan.
[00:05:29] Oh, well, yeah.
[00:05:31] Anyway, this is Psych House and it was written by Omusuke Kobayashi.
[00:05:36] Other works include, well, this is his debut series,
[00:05:40] but they got a few one shots, including Yamaviko no Nichijo 2022 Weekly Shonen Jump.
[00:05:46] Hare Tokidoki Ame 2022 Shonen Jump.
[00:05:50] Plus Ashita Akira no Tanagokuro 2022 Weekly Shonen Jump.
[00:05:55] And Hoki no Karyudo 2023 Weekly Shonen Jump.
[00:05:59] David, this one entered into the Golden Future Cup, but did not win.
[00:06:03] So this this manga is not a result of the Golden Future Cup curse.
[00:06:07] There we go.
[00:06:08] No, it turns out that you can still.
[00:06:10] You can still suck shit.
[00:06:12] Fail at manga, even if you don't have the fucking curse.
[00:06:16] Exactly.
[00:06:16] Psych House ran from the 12th of May 2024 to the 8th of September 2024.
[00:06:22] It replaced Shadow Eliminators.
[00:06:24] Hey, we were talking about the floppies earlier and what series might win best series.
[00:06:30] Shadow Eliminators not going to win best series.
[00:06:33] Yeah, I would agree with that.
[00:06:34] I'm definitely on board.
[00:06:36] But yeah, that was episode 111.
[00:06:38] The series that replaced this was Shinobi Undercover by Ippon Takaguchi and Santa Mitarashi.
[00:06:45] Same authors as Candy Flurry, apparently.
[00:06:47] David, what are your thoughts on it?
[00:06:48] David, apparently you've read it.
[00:06:50] I read it and then I read like two chapters of it.
[00:06:52] And I was like, okay, this is the same thing over and over.
[00:06:55] And then I read an art chapter and I was confirmed.
[00:06:56] So I stopped reading it.
[00:06:58] Oh, don't worry.
[00:06:58] I've kept reading it.
[00:06:59] It still keeps going the same exact thing.
[00:07:03] And I was like, this is going to get canceled.
[00:07:04] I should probably stop reading it so we can cover it.
[00:07:06] A series started at the same time as Psych House.
[00:07:10] Astro Royale, which is over two volumes doing all right.
[00:07:14] Kyokuto Necromance.
[00:07:16] Hey, wait a minute.
[00:07:16] That series is also not going to win best series in the floppies.
[00:07:20] And that was, I believe, last episode.
[00:07:22] Yeah.
[00:07:23] But Psych House ran for 17 chapters.
[00:07:24] This is U19, baby.
[00:07:26] U19.
[00:07:27] Yeah, I do.
[00:07:28] And only 12 of them were the same chapter over again.
[00:07:31] Yeah, may as well.
[00:07:32] And then, so, why don't we actually find out what happened in the 17 Astro chapters?
[00:07:38] Let's get into the plot summary.
[00:07:40] Katone is a high school girl who has the ability to teleport herself and objects.
[00:07:44] Also, her dad left.
[00:07:45] Her mom is in a coma and she's poor.
[00:07:47] One day, she meets a kid named Suya who wears a bucket on his head
[00:07:51] and can make things bigger or smaller at will.
[00:07:53] He chases her down and tells her that these powers are called psychs
[00:07:57] and invites her to live at his psych house.
[00:07:59] With other psychics, I mean, psych not used.
[00:08:02] Users, not psychics.
[00:08:03] That's different.
[00:08:05] Because she's too broke to afford food, she agrees.
[00:08:08] There she meets Kyoko, an alcoholic whose power is reading minds.
[00:08:12] Moa, a young girl whose power is creating copies of herself.
[00:08:15] And Kazu, whose power is being Moa's dad.
[00:08:18] The best superpower, honestly.
[00:08:20] Yeah.
[00:08:20] Fatherhood really is the best superpower.
[00:08:23] Popcorn Jordan.
[00:08:24] They kind of just dick around for 12 chapters.
[00:08:27] Popcorn David.
[00:08:28] They stop an invisible guy stealing things from a jewelry store
[00:08:30] and hand him over to the psychic police in the first and arguably only act
[00:08:34] that hints at a potential plot.
[00:08:35] Yeah, I think this is only a multi-part arc.
[00:08:37] Then Moa uses Kyoko's powers to read Katone's coma mom's mind,
[00:08:41] discovering she psyched herself into a coma using her dream psychic powers,
[00:08:45] which apparently were all psychic.
[00:08:46] No, no, not psychic, David.
[00:08:48] What?
[00:08:49] There's psyched powers.
[00:08:49] Just psyched powers.
[00:08:51] Sorry, psyched powers.
[00:08:52] Where she has the unique ability to see images while she sleeps.
[00:08:57] Guys, this is just like...
[00:08:59] I don't know what the opera...
[00:09:00] The opera literally says...
[00:09:02] It's pretty much since dreaming is a psychic power,
[00:09:04] and I'm like, no, it's really not.
[00:09:06] Jesus Christ.
[00:09:07] We're all psychs.
[00:09:08] God, I've just destroyed any remaining fabrics of respect we had for this series
[00:09:13] I've just now ruined.
[00:09:15] Katone goes into her mind to find that her mom is replaying the last day
[00:09:19] she had with her husband and daughter together,
[00:09:20] but Katone gets her to wake up, and yeah,
[00:09:23] and it reminded me a lot of Family Deadly Sins,
[00:09:26] which was a much better series than this for the first two volumes.
[00:09:29] Yeah.
[00:09:29] So let's get into the characters.
[00:09:30] Solman, can you tell us about Katone?
[00:09:32] So Katone, our main character here,
[00:09:34] she has the psych for teleportation for anything that she touches.
[00:09:38] By the way, by the way, you can read those notes,
[00:09:41] but those are just David's notes.
[00:09:42] You don't have to say that.
[00:09:43] Just so you know.
[00:09:44] If you have anything else to say, you can totally say that.
[00:09:46] He's listened to the pod.
[00:09:47] He fucking knows.
[00:09:47] Yeah, but we don't say that on the pod, David.
[00:09:50] I know this shit.
[00:09:51] I listen to the warm-up audio.
[00:09:53] Okay.
[00:09:53] I bet he reads the notes in cross comparison.
[00:09:55] He's what we didn't talk about.
[00:09:57] I definitely do not read the notes.
[00:09:59] I'm too lazy to do that.
[00:10:00] Yeah, no one fucking reads those notes.
[00:10:01] It's fine.
[00:10:03] They're there if you want them.
[00:10:05] I should put something where it's like,
[00:10:06] I'll send you a $50 bill if you find this,
[00:10:10] and Discord me the code word.
[00:10:12] I'll do it.
[00:10:12] I'll do it.
[00:10:13] Well, now people know I'm going to do this,
[00:10:15] so now I can't.
[00:10:16] We put it in a random episode's note, like notes.
[00:10:20] Like all I hid in my treasure in one place.
[00:10:23] But no one wants to read all those fucking show notes.
[00:10:26] Oh, and no one wants to read my recording notes.
[00:10:28] Your shit's like eight pages long, man.
[00:10:30] Double single size, single space.
[00:10:34] I think I did it.
[00:10:35] I did it like twice, and I went never again.
[00:10:37] Oh, listeners can already tell little interest we have in talking about this series.
[00:10:43] But it's so interesting.
[00:10:45] Back to Katone.
[00:10:46] Back to Katone.
[00:10:47] She has like a really hard life, but she is, by the way, like perfect in every way.
[00:10:52] She's smart.
[00:10:53] Yeah, like all, like if you can imagine a perfect girl, it's Katone, apparently.
[00:10:58] If you can imagine somebody that the author wishes was his girlfriend,
[00:11:02] you would probably imagine Katone.
[00:11:04] Yeah.
[00:11:05] Because it's like she's just so smart and cool and pretty and nice, clever,
[00:11:11] not materialistic either.
[00:11:12] And dang, she got them proportions, if you know what I mean.
[00:11:15] There's one chapter they just really aggressively sexualize her in the shower.
[00:11:18] Yeah.
[00:11:19] She has insane five highs.
[00:11:21] All throughout the series.
[00:11:23] Yeah, that's like, it's like weirdly part of the school uniform, but only for her.
[00:11:26] Yeah, why would it?
[00:11:27] What school uniform would say, oh, we need you to have stockings that high?
[00:11:30] But like not high enough.
[00:11:32] Well, that's the, it's a concept to a Japanese term.
[00:11:34] It's like, what is it?
[00:11:35] The favorite place or something?
[00:11:36] There's a Japanese term for that space between the end of the stocking and the skirt.
[00:11:40] Interesting.
[00:11:41] I feel like I've heard that, yeah.
[00:11:42] I'm going to look this up.
[00:11:43] Someone will respond in the comments about what term I'm thinking of.
[00:11:48] Uh, yeah, there's not much more to add.
[00:11:50] No.
[00:11:50] There's not much more to add.
[00:11:52] I guess it is nice that there's a female protagonist,
[00:11:55] because I thought Suya was the main protagonist and clearly he isn't.
[00:11:58] I mean, I guess she's the POV.
[00:12:00] Is there a protagonist?
[00:12:01] I suppose she is.
[00:12:03] I guess she is.
[00:12:04] Yeah.
[00:12:04] But Jordan, why don't you tell us about Suya?
[00:12:06] Uh, he's a kid with the power to make things grow,
[00:12:09] and he wears a bucket on his head, and he's kind of dumb.
[00:12:12] I don't know.
[00:12:12] You want anything else?
[00:12:13] He wears the same outfit every day.
[00:12:15] By the way, the term is Zatai Ryuki, which means absolute territory.
[00:12:20] Interesting.
[00:12:21] Is that like absolute territory fields?
[00:12:24] That's just the term between the end of the stocking and the start of the skirt,
[00:12:27] and there's a lot of reference images on the Wikipedia page.
[00:12:30] You say that, and I just hear Evangelion's memes.
[00:12:33] Maybe I was inspired by this.
[00:12:35] It's the AT film.
[00:12:37] They have a diagram and everything.
[00:12:40] This is a very robust Wikipedia page.
[00:12:44] Oh, God.
[00:12:45] Anyway, yeah, so he's a psychic kid.
[00:12:47] He can, you know, as you say, he can grow.
[00:12:48] I think about 90% of the chapters in this manga just end with Suya doing something wacky
[00:12:52] with his powers, and that's like the whole point of the chapter.
[00:12:54] Yeah, he's like the problem solver of the manga.
[00:12:57] That's arguably the whole point of the manga.
[00:12:59] It's very hard to have conflict in a series where everyone has very powerful psychic abilities.
[00:13:03] Was that serious?
[00:13:09] It's like Katone literally, to circle back to her, was like, they were doing a tennis tournament
[00:13:13] where you had to use your psychic powers, and she's like, I can't because it just breaks
[00:13:16] this entire tournament because I have teleportation.
[00:13:18] They did this with like multiple games, and each time it was like Katone was like, oh,
[00:13:23] wait, I would either break this or my power is useless.
[00:13:26] And it's just like, well, then why did you put that in there, Arthur?
[00:13:30] You didn't have to have them play games where their powers were unusable.
[00:13:35] Yeah.
[00:13:36] Do we even want to talk about any of our characters?
[00:13:38] They're just kind of there.
[00:13:38] You got the drunk psychic girl and the duplication girl genius.
[00:13:44] The duplication girl genius.
[00:13:47] Then like a genius girl.
[00:13:49] And then dad.
[00:13:50] And the guy's power is to be a reliable father in a manga.
[00:13:53] The dad, yeah.
[00:13:54] All right.
[00:13:54] Speaking of fathers, let's get into Wyatt.
[00:13:58] It's so fun.
[00:13:59] Such a shit thing to say.
[00:14:00] Oh, he unsubscribes as a patron.
[00:14:02] That's fine.
[00:14:03] Let's get into it.
[00:14:04] So tell us more, Jordan.
[00:14:06] What were some things the series didn't do so well?
[00:14:07] You know, David, it's amazing to read a manga that's only filler.
[00:14:12] Yeah.
[00:14:13] No killer.
[00:14:14] Nothing happened.
[00:14:15] It's so funny because I read all these people and we were struggling with this too.
[00:14:20] We were like, is this a gag manga?
[00:14:21] Is this slice of life?
[00:14:22] And the reason why we're asking these questions is because I think we are desperately trying to
[00:14:26] figure out who the fuck this manga is for.
[00:14:28] Yeah.
[00:14:29] Because it's like, it's not obviously atrocious in the way that a lot of other things are.
[00:14:34] It's just boring as fuck.
[00:14:36] Yeah.
[00:14:37] I don't really know who this manga was for.
[00:14:40] I like the way I think I actually might be too positive.
[00:14:43] I should save that.
[00:14:44] It's it's just it feels like it's in the wrong place.
[00:14:47] And yeah, just nothing.
[00:14:48] There's nothing here.
[00:14:50] How like?
[00:14:50] Oh, it's not not for a binge read for sure.
[00:14:53] On one hand.
[00:14:54] Yeah, maybe it shouldn't have been in this magazine.
[00:14:56] But even if it was in the magazine where this kind of thing goes, it's still a shitty version
[00:15:00] of what it's trying to do.
[00:15:01] Yeah.
[00:15:02] These characters are not interesting.
[00:15:04] Katoni is the only one who has any hint of character.
[00:15:06] I mean, Suya literally goes through absolutely no adversity or we learn pretty much nothing
[00:15:11] about any of these characters backstories.
[00:15:13] Absolutely nothing.
[00:15:14] I mean, I guess the psychic girl is like, oh, yeah, I cheated at cards and I won.
[00:15:19] But actually, no, David, actually, she only cheated to catch the cheater.
[00:15:24] Shut the fuck.
[00:15:25] She's like Dexter for poker.
[00:15:27] Shut the fuck up.
[00:15:28] And then the art is just kind of OK.
[00:15:30] I guess the job done.
[00:15:31] I went sometimes and then it's bad.
[00:15:33] Other times.
[00:15:34] I think it's honestly like the artist, I think, is fine, but I just don't like the art style.
[00:15:39] It's just kind of a sloppy art style, you know, it goes back and forth.
[00:15:42] I don't know.
[00:15:42] I feel like the artist fucks up a lot.
[00:15:44] Like, I feel like things go off model quite a bit sometimes.
[00:15:48] Yeah.
[00:15:48] There are series where you can be off model.
[00:15:50] I don't think this was one, though.
[00:15:52] No.
[00:15:52] And yeah.
[00:15:53] Oh, my God.
[00:15:54] The sudden sexualization.
[00:15:56] Like the first couple chapters.
[00:15:58] It's like, I don't know.
[00:16:00] I kind of sensed that something was going to happen just because of the way that like
[00:16:04] Katone was drawn with like the proportions.
[00:16:06] And of course, like the thigh highs.
[00:16:08] But I was like, ah, you know, I don't know about that.
[00:16:11] And then it just has a shower scene.
[00:16:12] Yeah.
[00:16:13] That shower scene was super weird.
[00:16:14] It was super fucking weird.
[00:16:16] First of all, it also recontextualizes the fact that Suyu's ability is to make things
[00:16:21] and people large and small.
[00:16:23] Like the moment when he shrunk her dresser and she was like, oh, no, now my underwear is too
[00:16:29] small.
[00:16:30] Yeah.
[00:16:30] And again, it's like, I guess it's like a thing, right?
[00:16:33] It's like, it's not really this makes you laugh.
[00:16:35] You're just like, I guess that's silly.
[00:16:36] I guess.
[00:16:38] Yeah.
[00:16:38] And along with that, it was also really annoying how Katone kept fucking talking about how,
[00:16:44] oh, no, am I getting fat?
[00:16:45] Oh, my God.
[00:16:45] I think I'm getting fat.
[00:16:46] There was literally like four or five chapters where that was like part of the plot.
[00:16:50] Yeah.
[00:16:51] And I feel like every time it was just Suyu making things smaller.
[00:16:55] Yeah.
[00:16:55] And there's so many interesting applications of their psychic powers that they offer.
[00:16:59] Sometimes they'll be like, I know I can do interesting things with this.
[00:17:01] And then they just phone it in for 90% of the series.
[00:17:04] And it's the same application of their powers every time.
[00:17:07] Yeah.
[00:17:07] I said like, oh, they kind of dick around for 12 chapters.
[00:17:10] They really do.
[00:17:11] It just really feels like the same chapter over and over again.
[00:17:14] There were times where I was like, wait, didn't I just read this?
[00:17:17] Like, it's seriously an unbelievably redundant manga.
[00:17:21] Like the author didn't know who this manga was for.
[00:17:23] The author didn't know what was going to happen in this manga because nothing happened.
[00:17:28] The author never found out.
[00:17:29] Also, how old are these characters?
[00:17:31] Because it seems like Suya is like 10 years old.
[00:17:34] But why is he in high school classes?
[00:17:35] I don't think he's 10 years old.
[00:17:37] I just think he wears like oversized clothes and is stupid.
[00:17:40] They even have a thing about how he can make his clothes exactly fit him.
[00:17:43] But he just chooses not to blatantly.
[00:17:46] Yeah.
[00:17:47] Like they have the like chapter where like they go shopping and he's just just bucket.
[00:17:51] Yeah.
[00:17:52] Yeah.
[00:17:52] Just bucket.
[00:17:53] He wears like his school clothes to sleep.
[00:17:56] And like he only has one set of clothes.
[00:17:59] It's like that joke from Doug where they go into his closet and it's just the same thing
[00:18:03] over and over again.
[00:18:04] It's like that, except not as good as Doug.
[00:18:07] Yeah.
[00:18:07] Oh, Doug.
[00:18:08] The coma mom plot is super weird where they have like this very serious plot in the background.
[00:18:13] Yeah.
[00:18:14] Like what the fuck is up with that?
[00:18:15] Why didn't they just say she's like living abroad or her mom's like working abroad or something?
[00:18:19] Yeah.
[00:18:19] The coma mom thing was just very weird.
[00:18:21] And there's like a hint that they're going to deal with a girl who's been going through abject
[00:18:25] poverty.
[00:18:25] That could have been a way to bring in some kind of drama or conflict.
[00:18:29] Like this girl who's been literally having to steal like food.
[00:18:33] Also, why would a girl who is starving so much she has to steal from food give a shit
[00:18:37] about being getting a little fat and having to talking about going on a diet?
[00:18:42] Like, well, I mean, part of that is food quality where your poor kind of circles back
[00:18:45] where you can't get proper nutrition.
[00:18:47] But it sounded like she wasn't able to eat much at all.
[00:18:50] I mean, I'm aware of like the food quality thing, but it's like also with her power,
[00:18:54] she could steal healthy food.
[00:18:55] Yeah.
[00:18:56] She also could make money very easily with her power.
[00:18:58] Imagine if she was the fastest stalker at any job she worked.
[00:19:01] Like imagine how she trivializes manual labor.
[00:19:04] I thought you said stalker, like stalking.
[00:19:08] She could stock the shelves at a convenience store in like 20 minutes.
[00:19:11] Because here's the thing as well as the world seems like they're cool with the psychic
[00:19:14] powers.
[00:19:14] No one makes a big thing.
[00:19:15] So she could just openly use her powers for commercial purposes and be fine.
[00:19:19] It seems apparently nobody knows about them until suddenly the cops show up and they have
[00:19:23] like anti psych gloves.
[00:19:26] Well, that wasn't like the regular cops because the regular cops didn't believe like the convenience
[00:19:30] store lady or the jewel lady about the invisible guy.
[00:19:33] But like there's like psych police, like a special police force type thing.
[00:19:38] Psych, it's the police.
[00:19:39] Yeah, it's just the setting of this world doesn't even make sense.
[00:19:42] And it's such a simple setting.
[00:19:44] How do you like not even have internal consistency when there's all like five things to keep track
[00:19:48] Right.
[00:19:48] This is not complicated.
[00:19:50] Anytime the series is approaching potential conflict, it's like, nah.
[00:19:54] Anytime the series is approaching any like potential moral questions.
[00:19:58] Like I keep coming back to how the mind reading girl was like, yeah, I cheated at poker, but
[00:20:04] I only cheated against people who were cheating.
[00:20:07] I was going to say this for miscellaneous fault, but it kind of reminds me of graduation from
[00:20:11] the adventure zone where it's like everyone, even the evil people have their like evilness
[00:20:15] justified.
[00:20:16] It was like they're doing abinals and they were talking about swindlers, but he explicitly
[00:20:20] is like, oh, but the swindlers swindle each other equally.
[00:20:22] So it all works out in the end.
[00:20:23] And it's like, why just make people be bad.
[00:20:27] You don't have to justify every single fucking thing.
[00:20:29] Man, I'm glad I stopped listening to the adventure zone after the first one.
[00:20:32] Yeah, I heard abinals is really fucking bad.
[00:20:36] Man, I remember when Taz was good.
[00:20:37] It was.
[00:20:38] It was good.
[00:20:39] Just like how I remember how this manga has some good parts.
[00:20:42] So why don't we get into the positives?
[00:20:44] Yeah.
[00:20:44] All right, Solomon, what did you like about this?
[00:20:46] I actually enjoyed a little bit of it for like the found families type stuff.
[00:20:50] I'm always a sucker for that.
[00:20:52] Like any found family type thing, because sometimes your like normal family life is a
[00:20:56] little rough.
[00:20:56] So I enjoy that really.
[00:20:58] Ha ha.
[00:20:58] I don't know anything about that.
[00:21:00] Ha ha.
[00:21:00] Ha ha.
[00:21:01] Ha ha.
[00:21:02] You mean that transition where I said, speaking of fathers, let's talk about family.
[00:21:06] Yeah.
[00:21:06] Ha ha.
[00:21:07] See, we got dad.
[00:21:08] Dad was good.
[00:21:09] Ha ha.
[00:21:10] Dad was good.
[00:21:11] Yeah.
[00:21:11] Dad was good.
[00:21:12] He was just dad, but he was good.
[00:21:13] You know what?
[00:21:14] That's the most effective power in the manga, actually.
[00:21:18] Yeah.
[00:21:18] Him being a good dad, honestly, it was half the time because I did read this week to week
[00:21:22] as it got released.
[00:21:23] And I'd be like, what's dad doing?
[00:21:24] Yeah.
[00:21:25] Kind of the most interesting character.
[00:21:27] Not even kind of, just he is, because it's like he's by definition not special, kind of.
[00:21:34] Which then makes him special because everyone else is, yeah.
[00:21:37] Yeah.
[00:21:38] And he actually had some kind of responsibility.
[00:21:41] And yeah, there was something there that nobody else had.
[00:21:45] And it wasn't that much.
[00:21:46] Like he's not that great of a character, to be clear.
[00:21:48] It's by comparison, he's a little bit better.
[00:21:50] I actually really liked the joke where house is like, has a big plant growing out of it.
[00:21:57] And it's like, oh, there's a 24 hour live stream of the house.
[00:22:00] Yeah.
[00:22:01] The neighbor across the street.
[00:22:02] We switch it and he's like, wait, there's immediately a comment like, did it just change?
[00:22:08] The giant bee comes flying off of it.
[00:22:11] Yeah, the giant bee is pretty good.
[00:22:12] Can't have conflict because he accounted for the giant bees scenario.
[00:22:15] I was like, oh, is this almost a plot where they have to go get the giant bee?
[00:22:19] No.
[00:22:19] No.
[00:22:19] And they just have a giant bee hanging out.
[00:22:22] As soon as the giant bee leaves the flower, it turns back into a normal size bee.
[00:22:26] Like, how does your power work?
[00:22:28] Anyway, pause it, pause it.
[00:22:29] I will say at the very least, it's nice that this was a very quick read.
[00:22:32] Did not stress.
[00:22:32] This was not too on ice where I was having Hunter Hunter flashbacks.
[00:22:36] I got through, I think this whole series in maybe 45 minutes, which is what you want out of.
[00:22:39] I did not.
[00:22:40] This was, I had.
[00:22:41] You're right.
[00:22:41] You spent so much time on the plot summary.
[00:22:43] Yeah, but I had to push myself to get through this manga because I was just so fucking bored.
[00:22:47] Like, because yes, David, you're right.
[00:22:50] There was no plot.
[00:22:51] Exactly.
[00:22:52] That's the problem.
[00:22:53] Nothing was pulling me through.
[00:22:55] Anyway, this is what it did well.
[00:22:56] I got another one for what it did well.
[00:22:58] Go for it.
[00:22:59] So I'll say like, since I read this week to week, I will say it was a nice little read
[00:23:02] to have on Shonen Jump to break things up with how serious some of the other Jump series can
[00:23:07] tend to be.
[00:23:08] They'd be like, all right, I've gone through a couple of serious ones.
[00:23:10] Let me just get a little chuckle in and then go back to the serious things.
[00:23:14] So it's a nice little like break from those.
[00:23:16] I respect that this series was trying to do kind of its own thing in Shonen Jump.
[00:23:20] I do.
[00:23:21] I respect that.
[00:23:22] Yeah.
[00:23:22] This had the bones of a cool idea because like a sci-fi slice of life is just, it's fun,
[00:23:27] right?
[00:23:27] That's like a fun idea where it's like, there have been other psychic comedies.
[00:23:30] What was the one in Shonen Jump that had to do with a psychic that was really big?
[00:23:33] It was like Psyche or something.
[00:23:34] There's Psyche K, I guess.
[00:23:36] Yeah, that one.
[00:23:37] Like having a twist and slice of life is cool.
[00:23:40] And it's kind of the worst part about this is like, this could have been a fun idea.
[00:23:42] Yeah.
[00:23:43] Which also shows how little positive I have or that really should have been in the
[00:23:46] where it could have gone second.
[00:23:47] But I want to say at least it tried something novel, even if its execution wasn't good.
[00:23:51] Yeah.
[00:23:52] I guess.
[00:23:52] I know.
[00:23:53] And at least they had one bad guy with psychic powers.
[00:23:55] We didn't think that would ever happen.
[00:23:57] I guess.
[00:23:57] Yeah.
[00:23:58] I guess he was a bad guy.
[00:23:59] Technically he was, wasn't he?
[00:24:01] There was a two chapter arc.
[00:24:02] Two chapter arc with one bad guy.
[00:24:05] Oh, what a chapter.
[00:24:06] Invisibility.
[00:24:07] Oh, Jesus Christ.
[00:24:10] Which by the way, you know that if that manga went on for five more chapters, he was going
[00:24:14] to join the psych house.
[00:24:15] Oh yeah, for sure.
[00:24:16] Oh, no doubt.
[00:24:17] Maybe he was there and he was invisible the whole time.
[00:24:20] Oh my God.
[00:24:21] Yeah.
[00:24:21] Yeah.
[00:24:22] I wouldn't even mention the, uh, what was he?
[00:24:24] The trash panda.
[00:24:25] Oh yeah.
[00:24:25] What the fuck was up?
[00:24:26] Oh my God.
[00:24:27] Right.
[00:24:27] I totally fucking forgot.
[00:24:29] They had a fucking raccoon dog.
[00:24:32] Good dog.
[00:24:34] And then that was his psych was that he could speak.
[00:24:36] All right.
[00:24:37] We need to get into where it could have gone.
[00:24:38] This is nothing to a positive.
[00:24:40] And I even forgot to write the plug.
[00:24:43] So before we get into where it could have gone, if you've been enjoying the show,
[00:24:46] we'd really appreciate it if you subscribe to the Shonen Flop YouTube.
[00:24:49] We're trying to hit our goal of 1500 YouTube subs.
[00:24:52] And if we do it, we're going to do a bonus episode on the Bill King Epilogue.
[00:24:55] If you're already subscribed, thank you so much.
[00:24:57] I got you.
[00:24:57] And then, um, on that note, just really, you had to play more into how psychic powers
[00:25:02] can just fit into life.
[00:25:03] You needed to have some sort of backstory that this was contributing.
[00:25:06] It doesn't have to be full fledged, but like take for instance, high school family.
[00:25:10] That's a fun slice of life about a very strange back setting, but they make it work.
[00:25:14] For those who don't know high school family, we've covered it on Shonen Flop.
[00:25:17] It's about a boy who starts high school and his entire family, including his mom, dad,
[00:25:22] eight year old sister, and cat all enroll in high school with him.
[00:25:24] His cat is magical.
[00:25:26] His cat is wonderful.
[00:25:27] It manages to have a plot, has a lot of fun.
[00:25:29] And so it shows that that kind of absurdist slice of life comedy can absolutely work.
[00:25:34] David, all I want is conflict.
[00:25:36] Just give me some conflict.
[00:25:38] Okay.
[00:25:38] Like make it so that not everybody is super fucking nice.
[00:25:42] You just moved in to, and you now have like a bunch of roommates.
[00:25:46] Nothing's happening between you guys.
[00:25:48] It all just works out wonderfully.
[00:25:50] Yeah.
[00:25:50] Everyone gets along great.
[00:25:52] Everyone gets along great.
[00:25:54] Come on.
[00:25:55] Like, like I want some conflict.
[00:25:57] It doesn't have to be like violence.
[00:25:59] It doesn't have to be fighting, but like something.
[00:26:01] Have some kind of personalities clash.
[00:26:03] They could have met the psychic that put her mom in a coma.
[00:26:06] Well, no, her mom did.
[00:26:07] Her mom put herself in the coma.
[00:26:09] Yeah.
[00:26:10] Well, that's what I mean is like, it wasn't like they couldn't even have a bad person responsible
[00:26:14] for that.
[00:26:14] Exactly.
[00:26:15] Nobody's evil in this world.
[00:26:17] They just needs to be bad.
[00:26:18] There's bad in the world and you need a little bit of it to drive a story forward.
[00:26:23] It's like the series is set up as if it's some kind of fish out of water, but it ends
[00:26:27] up being taking a fish and putting it in water.
[00:26:30] And then it's just like, okay, well then we're just now we're just watching a fish in
[00:26:34] water.
[00:26:34] Great.
[00:26:35] Cool.
[00:26:35] Yeah.
[00:26:35] You have this girl whose mom is in a coma, who is poor, broke, has had to live by herself,
[00:26:41] can barely afford to eat, has to steal for food.
[00:26:45] Doesn't this girl have trauma?
[00:26:47] Wouldn't she react suddenly to suddenly having stability like this?
[00:26:51] Wouldn't that create a different situation from how she acts from everybody else?
[00:26:55] Like, no, it doesn't.
[00:26:56] Apparently she goes on a fucking shopping spree.
[00:26:59] Yeah.
[00:26:59] She's just so completely fine.
[00:27:01] She's fine.
[00:27:01] She has no bad habits at all.
[00:27:03] Nothing.
[00:27:04] She's fine.
[00:27:05] She's fine.
[00:27:05] I got, I'm just imagining if the series had done like a 180 and it got really intense
[00:27:09] and really played with these instead of being bullshit slice of life that was, didn't make
[00:27:12] any sense.
[00:27:13] God, like, um, again, I'm not asking for like super brutal conflict.
[00:27:18] I'm asking for something.
[00:27:19] Yeah.
[00:27:20] You can, you can have mild conflict.
[00:27:22] That is fine.
[00:27:23] Rory Dragon's great.
[00:27:24] Rory Dragon's fantastic.
[00:27:26] Yeah.
[00:27:26] Oh, yeah.
[00:27:27] We'll get into Rory Dragon.
[00:27:29] Uh.
[00:27:30] Oh, like the only thing I can think of is like, they could have easily gone the route,
[00:27:33] which they kind of did with the invisibility guy of introducing people with other psychs
[00:27:37] who are doing bad things and how she clearly was conflicted because she had done a bad thing.
[00:27:43] Run with that.
[00:27:44] But she's fine.
[00:27:45] She's fine.
[00:27:46] And like her bad thing is like shoplifting a rice ball because she can't eat.
[00:27:51] Even when the fucking person who runs like the convenience store finds out he's not even
[00:27:57] mad at her.
[00:27:58] He wants to help her.
[00:27:59] And he's like, I'll give them to you for free.
[00:28:00] Like, no, she actually didn't really do anything wrong.
[00:28:03] Honestly, that would have been a great spot for her to be a convenience store.
[00:28:06] Hey, you can pay those off by working for me.
[00:28:08] Yeah.
[00:28:08] Bam.
[00:28:09] Yeah.
[00:28:09] I don't know why they didn't do that.
[00:28:11] Imagine like working at a convenience store with psychic power.
[00:28:13] Someone's like, oh, hey, where are the towels?
[00:28:15] She could literally just be like, well, I stocked them and then teleport the mirror.
[00:28:18] And they're like, whoa, you know, and that's how she like makes friends.
[00:28:20] She had those like normie friends that didn't matter at all.
[00:28:23] And I think the author forgot about him and brought him back for like a chapter.
[00:28:25] You just reminded me that they existed.
[00:28:27] Yeah, I think it is so funny that I forgot that that raccoon dog existed because that
[00:28:32] guy shows up and then he's part of the group for the rest of the manga.
[00:28:35] And I just completely forgot that he existed.
[00:28:38] But is he really part of the group?
[00:28:41] He did have that zoo chapter where he just complains about being the only fairly animal at the
[00:28:45] zoo.
[00:28:45] Right.
[00:28:45] Yeah.
[00:28:46] Listener, you may be hearing us say these things and you're like, well, you know,
[00:28:49] it sounds like a lot happens in this manga.
[00:28:51] Nothing happens in this.
[00:28:52] Nothing happens in this.
[00:28:54] It has the sin of being boring.
[00:28:57] Yes.
[00:28:57] And that's why I think we're really struggling.
[00:28:59] I mean, essentially, this series just needed to be about a girl who discovers like kind
[00:29:04] of a found family in a way that the series didn't represent.
[00:29:06] And really the conflict of how do you have such a hard life scraping by literally not having
[00:29:11] parents is very traumatic and she doesn't seem to really care.
[00:29:14] This series beyond just conflict, this series could have been very sweet.
[00:29:18] You could have had it like that.
[00:29:20] Yeah, but it didn't.
[00:29:21] Again, the issue is it's like you read this and I'm like, who is this series for?
[00:29:25] Why does I read this series?
[00:29:27] What is happening here?
[00:29:28] Like who cares about anything that is happening?
[00:29:30] Yeah, I who cares about anything?
[00:29:32] And I also don't care about the series anymore.
[00:29:34] So let's get into miscellaneous thoughts.
[00:29:35] Uh, uh, uh, I guess like this is kind of like what if Yotsuba was psychic?
[00:29:39] Though I do.
[00:29:40] Yotsuba was great.
[00:29:41] Also shout out to Flying Witch, which is another like slice of life.
[00:29:45] But the people have have witch powers.
[00:29:47] This is unrelated, but I was my friend was needed help naming their podcast about Gilmore Girls.
[00:29:52] And I was like, oh, you could dress up like witches and call it Grimoire Girls.
[00:29:55] Did they like that?
[00:29:56] They were mad that they didn't think of that.
[00:30:00] Fuck, just kill me now that that didn't.
[00:30:02] Anyway, yeah.
[00:30:03] But yeah, I just like there's so many things in this space.
[00:30:07] Like you're right.
[00:30:07] Rory Dragon just eats the series lunch.
[00:30:09] Like I don't think they would have printed this if Rory Dragon was still in Shodan Chum.
[00:30:12] Oh, man.
[00:30:13] Rory Dragon's great.
[00:30:14] Rory Dragon.
[00:30:15] Fantastic.
[00:30:15] But but it's also like there isn't like so much outward conflict in that.
[00:30:19] It's just kind of it's interesting.
[00:30:21] Yeah, it's because it feels like real problems, though.
[00:30:23] It feels like real problems.
[00:30:24] And there is conflict.
[00:30:25] Like one girl, she has to deal with her girl in her class actively hating.
[00:30:28] Yeah.
[00:30:28] Yeah.
[00:30:29] It's being a high school girl with a weird power.
[00:30:32] Yeah.
[00:30:32] That's what a slice of life is supposed to be.
[00:30:34] It doesn't mean there's not conflict.
[00:30:35] It might mean there's not violent conflict.
[00:30:38] It's everyday conflict.
[00:30:39] You know, everyday things happen that create conflict and stuff.
[00:30:43] And then none of them happen here.
[00:30:45] This fucking nothing happens here.
[00:30:47] This is this is nothing.
[00:30:48] Yeah, it's a manga about nothing.
[00:30:50] It's a manga about nothing.
[00:30:52] We also haven't talked about Witch Watch, which is probably the most explicitly this idea done better.
[00:30:58] But again, like again, like the thing is, Witch Watch not only has a plot, Witch Watch also is an actual gag manga.
[00:31:05] This is not a gag manga.
[00:31:06] This is not funny.
[00:31:07] Like, oh, God, it's not really trying to be.
[00:31:10] It's trying to be like cute.
[00:31:12] And it's like, fine.
[00:31:13] It's not.
[00:31:14] It's like, God, it's Jordan.
[00:31:16] So mad.
[00:31:16] I'm so mad.
[00:31:17] I don't know if we're doing biggest waste of time this year in the floppies, but this is winning that.
[00:31:21] How dare you compare this to Witch Watch?
[00:31:24] I'm just saying that I don't actually know how this was printable in the same magazine as Witch Watch, because what does this do that you don't get from reading Witch Watch?
[00:31:30] Solomon, have you read Witch Watch?
[00:31:32] I am about 50 chapters in.
[00:31:33] Isn't Witch Watch fucking awesome?
[00:31:35] A lot of text sometimes, but I do enjoy it.
[00:31:37] But that's the point.
[00:31:40] You know what you're getting into with that series.
[00:31:43] No, it's quite good.
[00:31:44] I enjoy it way more than I enjoyed this.
[00:31:47] So, yeah, it's like I want to see a reason to read this, because otherwise it really is just like, oh, this girl goes to live in a house and they got powers.
[00:31:56] And isn't that wacky?
[00:31:57] Isn't that fucking wacky?
[00:31:59] And everything goes great.
[00:32:00] Yeah, it's all good now.
[00:32:01] And it's like, well, OK, fine.
[00:32:04] I also thought it's weird they can mention the movie WALL-E, but they can't say YouTube.
[00:32:07] Yeah, they do say WALL-E.
[00:32:08] They say we're going to watch WALL-E, Link.
[00:32:10] And then I have a question for you guys.
[00:32:11] What is the psychic power you were most surprised didn't show up?
[00:32:14] Probably flying or super strength.
[00:32:16] I'd say they're so common and easy to use.
[00:32:19] That's true.
[00:32:19] That's a good one.
[00:32:20] Turning into animals.
[00:32:22] I mean, I thought that's what I thought that's what the raccoon dog was going to do, but nope.
[00:32:26] Did you guys realize no one actually has telekinesis?
[00:32:28] Yeah, that's true.
[00:32:29] Yeah.
[00:32:29] She can teleport, but she can't actually move things without teleporting.
[00:32:32] Yeah.
[00:32:32] So it's like, what the fuck?
[00:32:34] That's like the that is the psychic power when you think of psychic powers, right?
[00:32:37] Well, David, they're not psychic powers.
[00:32:39] They're psychs.
[00:32:41] You're right.
[00:32:42] I hate this.
[00:32:43] I hate this series.
[00:32:45] So anyway, do you guys have any other miscellaneous thoughts?
[00:32:48] I could go into Maxi B's thoughts because I don't have anything else.
[00:32:51] OK, if you want to read them off, be my guest.
[00:32:53] All right.
[00:32:54] This guy's like favorite manga include like Levely and Golden Camoey.
[00:32:59] And David really likes Yatsubo.
[00:33:01] Yeah, it's very apparent.
[00:33:05] As we mentioned earlier, this guy came out with like 50 fucking titles for this series.
[00:33:09] Had a designer make almost 20 goddamn logo designs and had a whole 3D model of the house made with
[00:33:15] like these complex schematics with like it had like a ton of rejected cover designs.
[00:33:20] He tried so hard and none of it like you can't see like any of the effort in this series.
[00:33:25] Well, he spent so much time on pre-production that he didn't.
[00:33:28] It's like one of those video games where it's like they spent like the first year and scrapped
[00:33:31] and then just stapled something together in the last like eight months they had.
[00:33:35] This information shocks me.
[00:33:37] Yeah.
[00:33:37] This is the Halo 2 of manga.
[00:33:39] This is like the original design document for like Quake that where it was going to be
[00:33:44] like this super complicated RPG.
[00:33:46] It was good.
[00:33:46] They were going to make Daikatana.
[00:33:48] And then they were just like, fuck it.
[00:33:49] Let's just make Doom in 3D.
[00:33:51] And they did.
[00:33:52] But yeah, apparently the volume title includes those 49 alternate titles and 18 fucking logo
[00:33:59] designs.
[00:34:00] Like just all this shit.
[00:34:02] But yeah.
[00:34:02] And then the translator Jan Cash told us that a lot of the characters have like these interesting
[00:34:08] things going on with their names.
[00:34:09] Because again, the author spent a shitload of time writing the Bible for this series,
[00:34:14] including Nemuru Suya, whose name means to sleep.
[00:34:18] And he's sleeping all the fucking time.
[00:34:20] Suya Suya is the onomatopoeia for sleeping.
[00:34:22] And Moa's name is more in English.
[00:34:26] That's how you pronounce that.
[00:34:27] Yeah.
[00:34:27] Which, you know, she's the girl who creates more of herself.
[00:34:31] And her father's name, Kazu, can mean number.
[00:34:33] And their last name is Nanba, which is how you pronounce number.
[00:34:38] Huh?
[00:34:38] Huh?
[00:34:39] Get it?
[00:34:40] Hmm.
[00:34:41] So funny.
[00:34:42] Oh, man.
[00:34:42] God.
[00:34:43] It's like you put all your effort in the wrong places, my guy.
[00:34:47] Yeah.
[00:34:47] I don't even know.
[00:34:48] And the big thank you from Jan Cash for getting to us.
[00:34:51] It's really.
[00:34:51] Thank you so much, Jan.
[00:34:53] Super cool.
[00:34:53] We had that last time.
[00:34:54] I think our last episode, we also had David Evelyn give us trivia.
[00:34:57] So whenever we cover our professional translated series, we will try if they've been a guest
[00:35:01] on the show to see if they can send us any notes.
[00:35:02] Yeah.
[00:35:02] That's a really cool treat that they were able to get us some additional trivia.
[00:35:05] And you know what else is a really interesting treat for our listeners, everyone?
[00:35:09] And what's that?
[00:35:10] The final verdict.
[00:35:11] Yeah.
[00:35:13] This is definitely our Any% Speedrun episode.
[00:35:16] All right.
[00:35:16] So right.
[00:35:16] Let's get into it.
[00:35:17] To it.
[00:35:17] What the six word summaries from the community?
[00:35:19] From Tucker.
[00:35:19] It never goes beyond the pale.
[00:35:21] Oh, that's a that's a really good one.
[00:35:22] Hey, Maxi B.
[00:35:23] This house is not a home.
[00:35:25] 090Z truly was the house of mid.
[00:35:27] Artil, a manga about nothing with superpowers.
[00:35:30] Or a paladin.
[00:35:30] Superhero manga outlives my hero academia.
[00:35:33] Not clickbait.
[00:35:33] Balf.
[00:35:34] There's no crime worse than shoplifting.
[00:35:36] Blah Moo Moo.
[00:35:36] Lots of fluff.
[00:35:37] Not much else.
[00:35:38] Chicken Warlord never got to its bucket list.
[00:35:41] CT3 LA couldn't teleport to an interesting character.
[00:35:44] Deckerson.
[00:35:44] My psychic power is speed reading.
[00:35:46] Diego, enter the Mickey Mouse psych house.
[00:35:48] Doogie.
[00:35:49] I already got Buckethead on Spotify.
[00:35:50] That one's for you, Jordan.
[00:35:51] Oh, yeah.
[00:35:52] By the way, David, in 2015, Buckethead released 119 albums.
[00:35:57] Oh, yeah.
[00:35:58] He's crazy.
[00:35:58] He's crazy.
[00:36:00] That's just like, what?
[00:36:01] I'm not joking, man.
[00:36:03] Look it up.
[00:36:03] Yeah.
[00:36:04] Dude rocks.
[00:36:05] Good manga in the wrong magazine.
[00:36:07] Funky Green Overdrive.
[00:36:08] You want an actual plot?
[00:36:09] Psych.
[00:36:09] That's the wrong manga.
[00:36:11] Oh, Super Hot Fire.
[00:36:13] That was one of our cover arts.
[00:36:14] Glornack Ironspawn.
[00:36:15] With great power comes great disappointment.
[00:36:16] Grey Potter.
[00:36:17] As sweet and fackas.
[00:36:19] Fackas.
[00:36:19] I don't even know what these fucking words are.
[00:36:21] As sweet and vacuous as saccharine.
[00:36:24] Okay, there you go.
[00:36:25] Isekai Sensei, why can't we have nice things?
[00:36:27] In JRPG, astrologist whiffed sure, but was never great.
[00:36:30] And then, Jordan, I'm going to pass it to you because we had a fuck done this week.
[00:36:33] Jesus.
[00:36:33] Psych house was truly a home.
[00:36:35] So, you know, take that, Maxi B.
[00:36:37] Lord Anubis, insert obligatory Super Hot Fire reference here.
[00:36:41] Hey.
[00:36:42] Oh, yeah.
[00:36:43] Luffy 0-3-2-1.
[00:36:44] So dull.
[00:36:45] Readers went comatose, too.
[00:36:47] Portal Man.
[00:36:48] Manga's not getting a second Genesis.
[00:36:50] Resident Warhammer nerd.
[00:36:52] Psych.
[00:36:52] I'm not participating this time.
[00:36:55] Savia.
[00:36:55] So laid back it's almost comatose.
[00:36:58] Spubby.
[00:36:58] You expected a long runner?
[00:37:00] Psych.
[00:37:01] Alternately, you expected a long runner, but it was ideal.
[00:37:05] Spike.
[00:37:05] Oh, no.
[00:37:05] This psych house has no foundation.
[00:37:08] T. Wolfwood.
[00:37:09] Cute.
[00:37:10] Sweet.
[00:37:10] Short.
[00:37:11] Not great.
[00:37:12] Thors.
[00:37:12] Should have teleported to another publisher.
[00:37:14] Watchtower.
[00:37:15] Another U19 already?
[00:37:16] Please say psych.
[00:37:18] Zylon.
[00:37:19] Gil gets axed.
[00:37:20] Psych gets psych.
[00:37:22] Yellow Cup.
[00:37:23] Psych.
[00:37:23] All a waste of time.
[00:37:24] Ulysse and teleport me away from psych house.
[00:37:27] How about you, David?
[00:37:28] House in need of a magazine rehome.
[00:37:31] Yeah.
[00:37:32] How about you, Jordan?
[00:37:33] Really is nothing but filler.
[00:37:35] And Solomon?
[00:37:35] I had two.
[00:37:36] My first one that I had was Cute Family for a different magazine.
[00:37:40] Yeah.
[00:37:40] And then Cool Powers and Interesting Plot.
[00:37:42] Psych.
[00:37:43] Hey!
[00:37:43] Oh, got him.
[00:37:44] Dang.
[00:37:45] Boom.
[00:37:46] Not.
[00:37:47] Yeah.
[00:37:48] And also, I think this was not a flop.
[00:37:50] Psych.
[00:37:51] This sucks.
[00:37:52] Fuck it.
[00:37:53] Say what.
[00:37:54] I think this is a certified flop.
[00:37:56] It's certified for me.
[00:37:58] How about you, Solomon?
[00:38:00] I definitely don't read as many bad things as you guys.
[00:38:02] I'd probably say it's a certified flop.
[00:38:04] Oh, there we go.
[00:38:06] Here's the thing.
[00:38:07] I mean, like, I think I mentioned in the last episode, I have a new rubric for determining
[00:38:12] if something is a certified flop or not.
[00:38:14] How would you respond to somebody telling you to read this series?
[00:38:18] Why'd you waste my time?
[00:38:19] Exactly.
[00:38:20] Why would you waste my fucking time?
[00:38:21] And that's kind of how I feel.
[00:38:23] This series wasted my time.
[00:38:24] If I read a series and feel nothing except why did I read this series?
[00:38:29] That is a certified flop for me.
[00:38:30] That is absolutely that dog.
[00:38:32] Yeah.
[00:38:33] So let's talk Rex.
[00:38:35] I mean, there's so many things to recommend.
[00:38:37] Could say let's read Yotsuba.
[00:38:39] Let's read Rory Dragon.
[00:38:40] Let's read Witch Watch.
[00:38:41] Pick one of those.
[00:38:42] Any of them.
[00:38:43] They're all way better than this.
[00:38:44] I pick X-Men.
[00:38:47] Oh, actually, I have another series.
[00:38:49] X-Men.
[00:38:50] I don't know what its English name is, but it's Dory Elf.
[00:38:53] No, a bunch.
[00:38:54] So it's essentially about a single dad.
[00:38:56] I'm going to find that series now.
[00:38:58] Thank you so much for telling me about it.
[00:39:00] Just look up cute elf girl baby mom.
[00:39:02] Or I don't know.
[00:39:03] Someone can post in the comments what the series, but essentially it's about a warrior who comes
[00:39:07] across an orphan elf and is like, whoa, that's a high elf, not a normal elf.
[00:39:11] That's really special.
[00:39:12] I need to take care of her.
[00:39:13] And it's all about him learning to be a single father in a fantasy world.
[00:39:16] Oh, that's cute.
[00:39:17] Yeah.
[00:39:17] You're like, oh, that does actually sound cute.
[00:39:19] Yeah.
[00:39:19] So that's my rec along with other much better series that are literally this, but done better.
[00:39:23] Jordan, what's your rec?
[00:39:25] X-Men?
[00:39:27] Fuck.
[00:39:28] Is that real exciting?
[00:39:29] Check it out.
[00:39:30] Okay.
[00:39:31] That's good.
[00:39:31] Yeah.
[00:39:31] That's a good one.
[00:39:32] There you go.
[00:39:32] Solomon.
[00:39:33] Solomon, what's your rec?
[00:39:35] I would say probably Witch Hat Atelier.
[00:39:37] Oh, that's good.
[00:39:38] Yeah.
[00:39:39] Yeah.
[00:39:39] Yeah.
[00:39:39] That's a good rec.
[00:39:40] Good rec.
[00:39:40] That's the found family right there.
[00:39:42] I love it.
[00:39:43] All right.
[00:39:43] And then Jordan, I think this isn't even close to being the worst thing we've ever read.
[00:39:46] This is pretty high up actually on the certified flop list.
[00:39:48] It's just so unbelievably mid.
[00:39:51] It's just boring.
[00:39:52] Yep.
[00:39:53] Is that your six word summary?
[00:39:54] Well, my six word summary.
[00:39:55] It's just so unbelievably mid.
[00:39:57] That's my second six word summary.
[00:39:59] Whatever.
[00:40:00] Close enough.
[00:40:00] It says so unbelievably.
[00:40:01] It's just so unbelievably fucking mid.
[00:40:04] How about that?
[00:40:05] Anytime I'm only five.
[00:40:06] There you go.
[00:40:06] I just add in fucking somewhere.
[00:40:08] Or wow.
[00:40:09] Yeah.
[00:40:09] Wow.
[00:40:09] It's just.
[00:40:10] Yeah.
[00:40:11] All right.
[00:40:11] So shall we get into wrap up?
[00:40:12] Yeah.
[00:40:13] So Solomon, thank you so much for joining us today in the speed run adventure.
[00:40:17] Where can people get more of you using all that precious time I saved by how short this

[00:42:36] and open the mystery box.
[00:42:38] Jordan, what was our bonus episode this month?
[00:42:40] And what did we talk about in the mystery box?
[00:42:41] Well, David, I finally made you read Get a Robo Go.
[00:42:45] Yes, with Xander Cannon, as you said.
[00:42:47] With Xander Cannon, as we just said.

[00:42:56] episode, episodes up to a week in advance, and behind-the-scenes content like warm-up
[00:42:59] audio, which this episode you really will want to hear it.
[00:43:02] It's good.
[00:43:02] Or our recording notes.
[00:43:03] I also want to read off some of our wonderful patrons.
[00:43:05] Starting from our Dolphin Dads, we have Glornak.
[00:43:07] Rachel, my wonderful wife.
[00:43:09] I was having a rough day, and she offered to buy me magic cards, which, you know, that's
[00:43:13] how you know she's a ride or die.
[00:43:14] And Sean, my womb is open.
[00:43:15] Okay.
[00:43:16] Moving on down to the ravioli tier, where ravioli really lived.
[00:43:20] The risk was calculated, but man, am I bad at math, where ravioli stole bread off the
[00:43:25] table, except she likes to eat it in her bed.
[00:43:27] So she ran over to the bed where Rachel and I were in the room.
[00:43:31] Rachel and I were in to go eat it.
[00:43:33] And she just looks at us, and she's like, oh, fuck.
[00:43:35] I didn't think this through, did I?
[00:43:37] And then we have Chris, Eva, Jeanette Davis, Lady T, Matt, Scarlett-Mirmerden, T, Tiffany,
[00:43:42] and Trevor.
[00:43:43] Moving on down to the King of the Forest, we have 090Z, Bandit Stoof, my girlfriend, Brad,
[00:43:47] Chad, Ivan, Jacob, Justin, Kirbymont, Marty, Riley, Sarah, T. Wolfwood, and Tommy Boyd.
[00:43:52] And a big thank you to our Galactic Ball Federation officers and our Beast Children.
[00:43:55] Thank you.
[00:43:56] I love all of you very much.
[00:43:57] And to Jordan, anything you want to toss in?
[00:43:58] So listen to Mission Ignition and also like...
[00:44:01] Hire Jordan to make music.
[00:44:02] Hire me to make some music, please.
[00:44:04] I'm trying to get into the scoring for video games and stuff like that.
[00:44:11] So if you're an indie game dev especially, hit me up.
[00:44:13] Yeah, it's exciting stuff.
[00:44:14] All right, and let's get in the sign-off.
[00:44:16] Thank you so much for joining us.
[00:44:17] Tune in next Monday as we give our first thoughts on Dear Anemone.
[00:44:20] This has been David.
[00:44:21] This has been Jordan.
[00:44:21] That's definitely not Dear Anemone.
[00:44:24] Nope.
[00:44:24] And this has been Sullivan.
[00:44:25] I'm going to pronounce it wrong in different ways every time during that episode.
[00:44:29] That's okay.
[00:44:29] And you've been listening to Shonen Flop.
[00:44:31] You bought Flop and Floppers.
[00:44:32] Yeah.
