[00:00:20] And welcome to this episode of Shonen Flop, where we talk about manga and shonen jump

[00:00:22] that didn't make big.

[00:00:23] I'm David.

[00:00:24] I'm Jordan.

[00:00:25] Next week, Jordan is joined by Dylan because I won't be here and they're going to be talking

[00:00:29] about service wars, which is actually very good.

[00:00:32] Really?

[00:00:33] If you'd like to read along with us, be sure to join the discussion in our discord and

[00:00:36] submit your six words summary.

[00:00:37] Find out like to the discord in our episode description and on our website shonenflop.com.

[00:00:41] Well, real quick, David!

[00:00:43] Why won't you be here next week?

[00:00:44] Because I am going to New Zealand for two weeks.

[00:00:47] Why, David?

[00:00:48] I'm gonna be in the rings of power the second season.

[00:00:51] I got cast as one of the hobbits because they didn't need to special effects for my height.

[00:00:55] And it's really funny, like it coincided with his honeymoon too.

[00:00:59] We're joined by our wonderful guest Amber.

[00:01:03] Amber, thank you so much for joining us today.

[00:01:05] Thank you so much for having me.

[00:01:07] Do you mind telling the audience a little bit about yourself?

[00:01:09] Yeah, hi.

[00:01:10] My name is Amber Carr.

[00:01:11] I go my blood buried part online.

[00:01:12] I'm a Twitch partner.

[00:01:13] But these days, I've been spending more of my time and my effort on my podcast Skull

[00:01:17] Tenders, which is sort of a D&D actual play that is tightly edited into a radio drama.

[00:01:22] Hell yeah.

[00:01:23] It is fantastic.

[00:01:24] It's really good.

[00:01:25] Thank you.

[00:01:26] You're having all the Skull Tenders on.

[00:01:27] This is three out of four.

[00:01:28] Yes, so listeners, not much of a guest who are whatever upcoming guests will be.

[00:01:33] Well, you know, first if you're not familiar, you should listen to Skull Tenders and then

[00:01:37] it won't be a yeah.

[00:01:38] Yeah, that's true.

[00:01:39] A surprise.

[00:01:40] You know, and you should listen to the past three episodes of our podcasts.

[00:01:43] I guess including this one and Cole.

[00:01:45] Yeah, that Jordan's comment is for people of R.A.

[00:01:48] Listen to this episode or just listening to it again.

[00:01:51] Just listen to all of our episodes and all of Skull Tenders and then you'll understand.

[00:01:56] At the same time, it's like Charlie and it's always sunny and filled up.

[00:01:59] You'll listen to two things at the same time.

[00:02:01] Yes.

[00:02:02] Exactly.

[00:02:03] Yeah, just putting both on at the same time.

[00:02:04] That's like Skull Tenders is very anime inspired.

[00:02:06] We blend them together.

[00:02:07] It'll work.

[00:02:08] There you go.

[00:02:09] And then Amber, what is your all-time favorite Dungeons & Dragons class?

[00:02:12] Ooh.

[00:02:13] It's tough because it depends.

[00:02:14] I guess if you're looking at like from a roleplay, super-spective or a mechanical perspective,

[00:02:18] I think that the life domain, clearic, like ooh, that's a great one.

[00:02:21] It's just so strong mechanically that it's hard to match up to a lot of other things, but

[00:02:25] I think my favorite roleplay perspective is probably like Artifacer.

[00:02:28] Mmm.

[00:02:29] Yeah, I like the mad scientist.

[00:02:31] It's a fun idea.

[00:02:32] It's a fun way to play a class.

[00:02:34] Artifacer's a great.

[00:02:35] I just played one for the first time a few weeks ago and it's just you just have so many

[00:02:39] fucking options though.

[00:02:40] Yeah, exactly.

[00:02:42] In the warm-up to this, these two were talking about match with the gathering and now they're

[00:02:46] talking about D&D classes.

[00:02:47] I have nothing to contribute to either of these.

[00:02:51] You've played Dungeons & Dragons before.

[00:02:52] I've played D&D with you.

[00:02:53] Yeah, but I like barely remember anything about the classes.

[00:02:57] Do you not play Baldur's Gate 3?

[00:02:59] A little bit.

[00:03:00] Well there you go.

[00:03:01] The classes are in there.

[00:03:02] Okay.

[00:03:03] Alright, well then I guess my favorite class based on Baldur's Gate 3 is a gate-wink.

[00:03:09] Oh that's a great class.

[00:03:11] There's okay buddy Baldur which is just Baldur's Gate 3 ship hosting.

[00:03:15] What's the name of the vampire dude?

[00:03:18] Astarian?

[00:03:19] Yeah, someone said I want to not and Astarian so bad but I have a koochi.

[00:03:23] The top comment was skill issue.

[00:03:26] That's right.

[00:03:27] Yeah, pretty much.

[00:03:30] Anyway, let's get into actually hearing about this fucker.

[00:03:34] So we're talking about Chagetcha or Chugetcha.

[00:03:38] I'm gonna Chagetcha.

[00:03:40] I guess I'm just gonna go with Chagetcha.

[00:03:42] It was created by Yoshio Sawai who also made bobo bobo bobo bobo.

[00:03:48] If you want to get just a basic idea, imagine if bobo bobo bobo was less coherent.

[00:03:54] Yes, I know what I just said there.

[00:03:56] But no one will feel this guy had his assistance who is Atsushi Namakiri of Switch and Red

[00:04:01] Blue on this manga.

[00:04:03] Don't know either of those.

[00:04:04] You say Matsui of assassination class?

[00:04:07] Remind me of that.

[00:04:08] That's a great series.

[00:04:09] Yeah, on bobo bobo.

[00:04:11] And now yeah, Matsumoto of Kaiju number 8 and previous episode Nekowapa.

[00:04:17] Yeah.

[00:04:18] On Shinetsu bobo bobo bobo bobo bo.

[00:04:21] So this guy did bobo bo which is insanely popular manga.

[00:04:28] David, I didn't realize until later that like, because like a whole joke is that bobo

[00:04:32] bo's power is a fist of the nose hair.

[00:04:35] It just occurred to me.

[00:04:36] Oh my god.

[00:04:37] That's how fist of the North Star sounds in like Japanese.

[00:04:40] Fist of the nose heart or what?

[00:04:42] Yeah.

[00:04:43] This is the North Star.

[00:04:44] Like oh, that's great.

[00:04:45] But yeah, the bobo bo wrapped up in late 2005.

[00:04:49] Took a month off to return to Shinetsu bobo bobo bobo.

[00:04:53] I guess that's like the, that's like bobo bo ship you then.

[00:04:56] Yeah.

[00:04:57] MaxiB says that it's more bobo bo but they have a Koala assassin and it's way worse.

[00:05:03] It's way worse and apparently there's some controversy that MaxiB does not go into

[00:05:09] here.

[00:05:10] But after that he did a Kirarinchou no abake festa which only went for one volume.

[00:05:17] This was his manga immediately following Chogu-cha and was apparently a children's book

[00:05:24] under Shueish's kids line, Wakawaku.

[00:05:28] And after that failed he did Fuari Don Patch which went for two years, three volumes in

[00:05:35] Psycho Jump and it's like cutesy bobo bo basically with Don Patch.

[00:05:40] And there was another Don Patch series called Honori Don Patch for one volume jump plus

[00:05:47] and seems like he made a Yatsubuk clone.

[00:05:50] Apparently these past two manga were just Yatsubuk clones with Don Patch instead of the

[00:05:55] 4chan girl.

[00:05:56] But yeah, enough about that shit.

[00:05:58] Let's get into the plot summary.

[00:05:59] Hell yeah.

[00:06:00] Oh god, the plot.

[00:06:01] Alright.

[00:06:02] Wait, there was a plot in this?

[00:06:04] I'm gonna learn about this plot for the first time in this summary.

[00:06:07] This was tough to write.

[00:06:09] The fact that this is like maybe 8 cents to speak so much about what happened in this.

[00:06:15] This was simultaneously very difficult and very easy to write.

[00:06:19] It's strange, but yeah.

[00:06:21] Good at Tokyo is a city with the toughest high school delinquents they're called Yankees

[00:06:26] and I'm always just baffled how many specific types of delinquents there are in Japan.

[00:06:31] But these high schools there engage in combat for dominance.

[00:06:36] One day, Chagacha or Chagetcha or Chagacha of Gachau.

[00:06:41] Of Gekiyatsu high school returns to the city after two years and just starts fucking shit

[00:06:46] up.

[00:06:47] He meets Masoto.

[00:06:48] His underclassmen tells him about how the dragon ninjas at Gorilla High are literally

[00:06:52] sending weak students up the river with watermelons or something.

[00:06:56] And they defeat him using Chagacha's Yankee.

[00:06:59] And that is like Yankee, but it's Yon and then Kee like Dragon Ball Z thing.

[00:07:04] He uses his Yonkee powers because he is known as the human bike for some reason.

[00:07:10] Puprity.

[00:07:11] Yeah, that has never made clear really.

[00:07:14] I don't get it.

[00:07:15] I think that was never made clear can be said about any set after every sentence in this

[00:07:20] plot summary.

[00:07:21] Yeah, that's true.

[00:07:22] All right.

[00:07:23] Word makes it to Kabu, Kintitimaru.

[00:07:26] I don't care who gives a shit up.

[00:07:29] Yeah, the third year president of Nare, a Sayokan high school, the highest rank school

[00:07:34] where someone from Gekiyatsu, a high school solo, it fell off the chart and one of the

[00:07:39] few actually funny jokes defeated Gorilla High.

[00:07:42] When Chagacha learns just how low Gekatsu is ranked, he decides to change this so he goes

[00:07:45] to an arcade and recruits Kauai Himawari, a girl who goes to his school and is very strong.

[00:07:51] I'm not going to bother as David just pointed out.

[00:07:54] I'm not going to bother correcting the numerous mispronunciations David just made.

[00:07:59] Jordan, we're four years into this just accept it.

[00:08:02] I'll accept it here.

[00:08:03] All right, but I'll also accept the fact that it's time for popcorn amber.

[00:08:07] Chagacha, then goes to school and joins a team that fights for the school in order to

[00:08:12] rise in the ranks.

[00:08:13] There are some other guys on the team, but the only one that really matters is Daraji

[00:08:16] who's like a young kid who's got such powerful young he skipped several grades because

[00:08:21] I guess that's how that works.

[00:08:22] I guess.

[00:08:23] They have a very, they have a very large and confusing fight against another high school

[00:08:28] in which they win in like a sweep, but it certainly doesn't feel that way when you're

[00:08:32] reading it.

[00:08:33] I guess.

[00:08:34] But they rise to be ranked as a result and that's pretty much all that happens.

[00:08:37] Yeah.

[00:08:38] Am I forgetting anything?

[00:08:39] No, I just none of it matter.

[00:08:41] No, exactly.

[00:08:42] No, you don't forget anything.

[00:08:44] Yeah, just imagine the most incoherent gags throughout all of this and you'll have

[00:08:51] a pretty good idea of what Chagacha is.

[00:08:54] Yeah.

[00:08:55] And then Amber, you might actually telling us about the main character of this series.

[00:08:59] Chagacha?

[00:09:00] I mean, it was hard because like characters, I feel like girls are bizarrely in the

[00:09:03] old defying.

[00:09:04] Oh, yeah, Ches, you are welcome to try your best and I do have some notes if you want

[00:09:10] to read those off.

[00:09:11] That's a fine starting point.

[00:09:12] Chagacha is like, he's supposed to be a third year student.

[00:09:15] He looks like a grown man.

[00:09:17] Oh, this is like where as most of it like the ranging which the ages look like they are

[00:09:21] compared to like the, they're actually supposed to all be within like three years of each

[00:09:24] other.

[00:09:25] Everybody like third years look like grown men and like first years look like a little

[00:09:28] of children.

[00:09:29] Yes, but he seems to just be his defining power just seems to be that he is super strong.

[00:09:33] Obviously, he uses his power the human bike which is not super clear exactly what that

[00:09:39] means.

[00:09:40] He also has a giant poop in the first episode and I don't think it's ever seen again

[00:09:43] after that.

[00:09:44] Oh, so disappointing.

[00:09:45] Another one of his defining characters seems to be the smoke cigarettes.

[00:09:49] Yeah, that's true.

[00:09:50] Yeah.

[00:09:51] How dare he?

[00:09:52] That's pretty delinquent of him.

[00:09:53] He's pretty cool and delinquent.

[00:09:55] Also like he says that he left for two years, where did he go?

[00:09:58] I don't know.

[00:09:59] He came back and he was like, I'm back to talk to my parents and then we never see his

[00:10:04] parents and I don't get it.

[00:10:05] He lives in a cigarette machine.

[00:10:07] He does and he has a giant poop which was super important and they never showed up again.

[00:10:11] Yes, it was like a giant poop shield.

[00:10:14] I will say the bit of him coming out of the cigarette machine and he's like almost the

[00:10:17] exact same size as it.

[00:10:19] It's like it's like, it's he's encased it like a suit of armor more than it is like

[00:10:22] a house.

[00:10:23] I did think that was pretty good.

[00:10:24] Yeah, he's really packed in.

[00:10:27] It's like a Hansel in the carbonite.

[00:10:29] Exactly.

[00:10:30] We'll get into this but there's so many times this manga is just almost funny.

[00:10:33] Yeah, and then George, do you want to tell us about my soda?

[00:10:37] Uh, some of the soda.

[00:10:39] He appears for a few chapters.

[00:10:41] He's like a first year and he meets Chagetcha and he's like, oh shit.

[00:10:44] Yo, I'm your underclassman.

[00:10:46] Chagetcha is like, that's cool.

[00:10:48] Let's let's work together and then Chagetcha is joining the team to uh,

[00:10:52] fight in the ranks.

[00:10:54] They're like, no, I'm a soda.

[00:10:55] You can't join and then the soda disappears for the rest of the month.

[00:10:58] Yeah, I don't understand what the point of his character was.

[00:11:00] Yeah, he doesn't really seem to serve any purpose at all.

[00:11:02] So Mrs. if like, he was a concept that was abandoned as he went further and writing

[00:11:06] it like are you saying that this offer gave up on some things about this manga?

[00:11:11] Really reaching here, I understand but I get the feeling that maybe this was not the

[00:11:16] most planned out in advance piece of media I've ever read.

[00:11:19] Yeah, this is actually not the first time we've read a manga where okay, Maxi

[00:11:22] maybe says it's ambiguous, but we have had offers say I give up.

[00:11:25] I can't write the series anymore and that's why it ends.

[00:11:27] Yeah.

[00:11:27] My favorite one is a series called Sokutotetsu Taiwaihen where it's pretty clearly like the

[00:11:33] author kind of doing a fourth wall break where he has a character representing himself show

[00:11:38] up and be like, guys, I'm sorry you were supposed to be so much better than this fuck.

[00:11:42] I'm done here.

[00:11:43] I'm so sorry.

[00:11:44] Let me end this right now.

[00:11:45] Yeah, and then to move on to the next character we have Himawari who the token female character

[00:11:51] I accidentally forgot what her name was, but I actually updated it and somehow that didn't

[00:11:55] update.

[00:11:56] So Jordan saw my shame in our notes document.

[00:11:58] But yeah, she's hot headed very strong doesn't take no BS very token female representation

[00:12:02] in action manga.

[00:12:04] I don't know what else to really say about her.

[00:12:08] She fights with her phone charm which is a bowling ball that is hanging.

[00:12:11] Oh yes.

[00:12:12] A full-sized bowling ball that is hanging from like a chain link chain off of her phone.

[00:12:17] She was gifted it by the Muscle King.

[00:12:19] Yes.

[00:12:20] Which is a reference.

[00:12:21] Was she gifted it by the Muscle King?

[00:12:23] Is that in the Smonga?

[00:12:24] I don't even know.

[00:12:25] I was thinking a reference to the last manga we read.

[00:12:27] Oh yes, you mean Saint Muscle?

[00:12:29] Yes, in Saint Muscle.

[00:12:30] So Amber there is a guy called the Muscle King.

[00:12:32] He means the Giant King.

[00:12:34] Giant King, yes.

[00:12:35] That's a gift from the Giant King.

[00:12:36] It's very important he's the Giant King.

[00:12:39] He has to be referred to as Giant King at all times Amber.

[00:12:42] He is a Giant King.

[00:12:44] Yes, to be fair and he gives people giant bowling balls to train with so like on ironically

[00:12:49] if this wasn't the same universe she might have gone it from the Giant.

[00:12:52] Anyway, Amber can you finish up and tell us about Doraji AK The Little Dude?

[00:12:57] Yeah, Doraji is the student that skipped a bunch of grades on account of like his high

[00:13:02] Yankee.

[00:13:03] His power level was just so strong.

[00:13:05] Yeah.

[00:13:06] He beat up all of his teachers and they passed.

[00:13:07] Yeah, he has like he seems to be some sort of like a DBC Pistiche or parody.

[00:13:12] He's kind of like a Krillin type character.

[00:13:13] Yeah.

[00:13:14] So hidden powers difficult to using it.

[00:13:15] It's like his powers are represented by like a slot machine at times.

[00:13:19] And after a while this it gets hard to tell which things are like other way gags and which

[00:13:24] things are gags that actually have sort of relevance on the plot.

[00:13:26] Yeah, but like he like turns into like puts on like a cat suit.

[00:13:29] It won't put like an out like a cat costume.

[00:13:32] I don't know if that's part of his power just a gag they were doing.

[00:13:36] But he's sort of like it almost seems like they are setting him up to be like their number

[00:13:39] two fighter before the series ended.

[00:13:42] He's on the like hover art for the series.

[00:13:44] So he was supposed to be a really big character.

[00:13:46] Yeah.

[00:13:47] No pun intended.

[00:13:48] I'm pretty sure one of the first things that happened in this manga is that a tiny dude

[00:13:53] and a cat suit falls on like a fighter jet piloted by a saying.

[00:13:57] Yeah, and I think that the little cat dude might be Doraji maybe huh?

[00:14:03] I don't know and I think the author might not have known either.

[00:14:07] No, no.

[00:14:08] This series is a fucking mess.

[00:14:09] So why don't we get into why it fit?

[00:14:12] Okay.

[00:14:13] So, yes, the Jordan what stood out to you as just I mean there are so many things that

[00:14:17] this series did terribly.

[00:14:19] What would you say stood out to you as the first thing?

[00:14:22] Pure chaos David pure fucking chaos like it is so impossible to follow this series.

[00:14:29] The series does not let a single joke breathe.

[00:14:32] It doesn't let you like like I went to read a couple chapters of Boba bow after this and

[00:14:38] Boba bow it's like they kind of take a few panels at least to tell one joke.

[00:14:44] This series takes a couple panels to tell like three jokes and so you miss like all

[00:14:51] of them or you grab onto one and kind of lose it and then they're talking about something

[00:14:56] completely different in the next panel and you're like what?

[00:14:59] What is this joke?

[00:15:00] What is going on here?

[00:15:02] And like as a result like there's so much shit going on that you can't even follow

[00:15:07] what the fuck is happening.

[00:15:09] Yep, like again with Boba bow you can follow Boba bow pretty easily.

[00:15:14] Yeah, like you get done with this one you get done with Chagachan you're like wow Boba

[00:15:18] bow sure was restrained yes it's like how you have those directors who like and my

[00:15:23] shammel on who makes like a really great movie and then he loses a lot of the studio control

[00:15:27] and you realize without that he is just too off the wire to actually be able to make

[00:15:31] a comprehensive movie and it's just like so interesting when you say how a really

[00:15:35] like a really good editor fixes a lot of the issues that some of these creators have.

[00:15:38] Yeah, well you know it's the old thing that used to say about and they still say about

[00:15:42] George Lucas where like that's the best example.

[00:15:45] Yeah where he made Star Wars and then he did the prequels and people like yo that's

[00:15:49] George Lucas he has an idea it must be good let's nobody tell him it's a bad idea

[00:15:54] and then he ended up with the prequels yep it's like poetry it rhymes it rhymes speaking

[00:15:58] of the prequels just yeah no idea what the fuck was going on also can we talk about the

[00:16:02] art on that note.

[00:16:03] What the fuck was going on in these pages.

[00:16:06] They are just this is messy like there's not like I'm not gonna say there's no character

[00:16:11] designs to like in there but there's this like there are a lot of characters are introduced

[00:16:15] rapidly and very dense frames all the time it's not the most handsome manga I prefer.

[00:16:21] No, it's not it's interesting because we've seen this before like with are you familiar

[00:16:25] with Triccio or I think that's I say it by the creator of Bill King Toreco yeah the creator

[00:16:30] Toreco made this manga Bill King which looks literally like if you asked Americans to

[00:16:34] draw an anime parody because he just completely lost the ability to comprehensively draw

[00:16:38] manga and it's interesting to see that again in this.

[00:16:41] It's like the specific way he draws characters doesn't really bother me like it's similar

[00:16:47] to how you drew characters in Boba Boba but if you go back to Boba Boba there's so much

[00:16:51] more space in Boba Boba like you can again see what's happening in a panel you look at

[00:16:58] the panel and you're like I know what is going on in that panel yeah but here there's

[00:17:03] so much shit it's just so busy is the problem.

[00:17:07] It's like claustrophobic yeah and all like that like I'm thinking about like well what

[00:17:12] frames of pieces art did work it's almost always when he would take the time and slow himself

[00:17:16] down to do a big one or two page image like when they come to the school of the guy who

[00:17:20] setting the kids up the river and he's like the big face on the side of the building with

[00:17:24] all the tentacles and it's just like one two page spread with that it's like oh wow this

[00:17:27] looks nice but then you get to the next page and it's like oh cool there are 16 panels

[00:17:32] on this page yeah the composition is atrocious like typically when you have a composition

[00:17:39] you want to have a focus like a main thing that draws the viewers eye and it's very rare

[00:17:44] that chagacha does this yeah there are actually not a lot of two page spreads the page spread

[00:17:51] from last week.

[00:17:52] Oh God Amber there was a two page spread last week that was literally just the main

[00:17:56] characters ass.

[00:17:58] Beautiful.

[00:17:59] Okay I promise that's the last time we're going to talk about St.

[00:18:01] Muscle.

[00:18:02] That series is going to stay with us forever.

[00:18:05] Yeah Amber though are there anything so you feel we haven't brought up that you would

[00:18:08] consider issues with this series?

[00:18:10] We already touched on it more than the character thing but like introducing characters

[00:18:13] that don't go anywhere yeah is like a very much a thing in this there's like a lot of

[00:18:18] that.

[00:18:19] Masato like why even have Masoto you could kind of entirely anything that he says like

[00:18:24] he doesn't really do anything early on I guess he does do with the ever really but

[00:18:27] you could pretty much he does nothing ever.

[00:18:30] Yeah you could give everything you needed to be said by him to hemoari and it'd be fine.

[00:18:36] Imagine if Masoto just dies in like the second chapter and they have like this really

[00:18:40] long flashback and mourn him for like five chapters when he showed up in like three pages

[00:18:45] God that would absolutely really fucking funny.

[00:18:48] It's almost like his only purpose is to show up and go ah you go to the same school as

[00:18:52] me.

[00:18:53] I'm in this year this school is called this.

[00:18:56] I think that is I think that is literally what he was there for a laugh because you've

[00:19:00] missed one other important responsibility has where it has to do this trip which I hate

[00:19:04] every fucking time it shows up when something ridiculous happens and the author's like they

[00:19:08] won't get why that's funny we need someone to say what you shouldn't be doing that that's

[00:19:13] funny because that's ridiculous and I fucking hate that show about every single God damn

[00:19:18] time it shows up in gag model.

[00:19:19] Oh God yes all the time all the time that's why he needed to be that's why he was literally

[00:19:25] in this manga so they had a character that could do that.

[00:19:28] Apparently I forget who said this we had them on the podcast I forget who was I'm sorry

[00:19:33] apparently a lot of humor in like a lot of Japanese humor is based more on the reactions

[00:19:40] yeah then American humor but it is still it's overdone I mean granted I think this series

[00:19:46] maybe needed it because the jokes are so unclear and they keep stepping all over it's all

[00:19:52] over themselves just constantly yeah it's also just there's no plot you gotta understand

[00:19:57] listener I wrote like eight sentences for that plot summary but so much shit happens in

[00:20:02] this series it's just that none of it matters yeah it is so interesting when we've read

[00:20:07] other series that were not I would say really good but it didn't feel like I was wasting

[00:20:11] our time like um Amber we read a series nano hazard which it wasn't terrible but the

[00:20:15] entire time you're reading it like everything matters it respected my time as a reader which

[00:20:20] the series does not yeah I would not say that it does that what mean to be fair uh it gives

[00:20:24] you a lot of information really fast so you can get done faster so maybe that's the way

[00:20:29] that it respects your time is it well I'll just put all these jokes as close together as possible

[00:20:32] since none of them were funny and then you can be done with it for the afternoon I'm gonna

[00:20:36] put all the unfunny jokes together so that the other unfunny jokes can breathe look worse

[00:20:43] than comparison yes I do want to say there were a few one or two funny jokes so why don't

[00:20:48] we get into what it did well so Amber as the most famous content creator out of the three

[00:20:53] of us what would you say are some things you think it did well not every character design

[00:20:56] this bad oh honestly there's like definitely some good ones like I think uh hemoari is very cute

[00:21:01] I really liked her uh I don't really like the way he draws her face it's like it's simple but

[00:21:06] it's very cute it's very it's evocative some of the jokes worked for me I like the rabbit

[00:21:10] that's always hot in a way the jokes the rabbit's great I love the rabbit the duck in the first

[00:21:14] chapter yeah like that I like when he punches the guy to Brazil every once in a while you'll be like oh

[00:21:21] okay oh you're you're actually doing it now okay and then the answer is no just it was just for

[00:21:26] that but and like I said I like the when he does take the time to do a one or two page spread

[00:21:30] it actually is quite nice like when you step away from like the clutter because it's really like

[00:21:35] the handling that makes everything so cluttered yeah because his art is pretty busy but that isn't

[00:21:39] a problem if you give the specific scenes more space to breathe uh so when he does like a big spread

[00:21:45] it's like oh that looks really cool it's very dense an action packed and so that like landed for

[00:21:49] me and I liked the like the constantly escalating stakes of the show I did enjoy but it doesn't

[00:21:54] really ever pay off yeah I agree it really stood out to me there was that scene like at when they're

[00:21:58] all at the table and it's the baddest as a grill high that was a really cool scene and that was just

[00:22:02] like a well drawn two page spread which made me think oh yeah this guy actually knows how to draw

[00:22:07] when he tries yeah yeah I feel like all of the best jokes in this manga involve hard boiled cute

[00:22:13] animals yeah yes absolutely it's like a in Nico Wapu which is a manga by as we talked about as

[00:22:20] assistant there is just this uh what is it Gendo from Evangelion yeah there's a hamster that is

[00:22:26] a parody of Gendo from Evangelion who's like a commentator during this race it's the best joke in

[00:22:31] the whole series and yeah and yeah if this uh in this manga like let's see we got first chapter

[00:22:37] we got like this badass pigeon who like is super manly and has like a scar over his eye and

[00:22:44] talk it to must avenge him and then like towards the end we got this bunny that keeps talking

[00:22:49] out how bunnies have been born in war and there's just like these these little drawings of bunnies

[00:22:55] with like AK 47's that were actually like like I really liked yeah and then there's like this one

[00:23:01] little baby chicken this I want to say that because so it doesn't sound like I'm talking about like

[00:23:07] a girl in a strangely uh misogynist way and the chick is just like constantly saying these

[00:23:15] really like intense things and the the big bad is like he's the only guy I wouldn't want to have

[00:23:22] just imagining that the chicken like hatching he's born with an eye scar already

[00:23:27] and like an eyepatch in fucking yeah but yeah I just also the heart fighting the kid scene

[00:23:33] that was just so overlit top stupid and they think that's the space he needed to be in

[00:23:37] yeah yeah just he has some fun character designs as you said Amber and it just makes this

[00:23:42] seems fun but there's just god it's just oh you had you know how to make funny manga I'm just so

[00:23:47] mad that you just for some reason didn't do that with this series there were some good visual

[00:23:52] gags I also liked the dude who had like the pompadora that was like I was like non-chucks oh yeah

[00:23:58] that was good yeah and then before we go into work at a gun Amber do you have any other thoughts

[00:24:02] about things you actually liked I know it's hard to think of them oh I like this power where he

[00:24:07] pumps his own heart faster to make himself stronger yeah I thought that was fun I forgot

[00:24:12] oh my god I did too yeah there's only eight chapters here and yet we forget so much what happens

[00:24:18] in this series that's one of the only times where something is clearly presented as here is my

[00:24:23] power this is what it's called and this is what it does yeah instead of just like stuff that is

[00:24:28] inexplicable happening all the time the human bike yeah oh yeah I forgot it never mind it's not

[00:24:34] completely split yeah he's the human bike I don't know all right let's get to work at a gun I don't

[00:24:40] even know how to transition let's bike on over to where it could have gone there you go where could

[00:24:45] it have biked if it was the human bike in terms of where could it gone I do like the idea we talked

[00:24:50] about this weird like punk student world where just imagine if they did root literally every chapter

[00:24:55] introduced a new big bad and it was like the boss and so it just escalates infinite it's like

[00:25:00] a staircase of escalation and then it just ends without resolving anything and that was like on

[00:25:06] kind of did that I feel like stuff for the on purpose part no I now I hear you I feel like this

[00:25:12] series like where could the series have gone where could it have gone I like what they're gonna

[00:25:17] they're gonna keep fighting in the ranks to get higher this is going to be our new podcast as we

[00:25:21] said a dnd actual play radio trauma set in the chagot show universe where we have to figure out

[00:25:26] the plot of chagot shows god good luck that's really hard I would say that like most dnd sessions are

[00:25:33] better planned out than this manga was it's like call of cthulhu where you can only lose hey hey

[00:25:39] Sean McKenzie survived seven sessions of call of cthulhu which may actually be a world record wow

[00:25:45] my character's motivation was I get the fuck out one of our infamous is we were we worked for like

[00:25:51] a detective agency and we had to find out if they were saying things supernatural going on at this

[00:25:54] convention and we found like this guy who got mummified like on the spot by a demon hand and we're

[00:25:59] all right and I was like all right well mission accomplished we can go and report this in the

[00:26:03] deems like or the arc players like don't you want to stop them like no that wasn't the that was

[00:26:06] the objective I'm just gonna leave and then they all everyone else died because they tried to fight it

[00:26:12] you don't really win in this like you don't fight those things yeah that was my meta game was how

[00:26:17] long and I survived for one character all right uh yeah so anyway and where could it go on uh yeah

[00:26:22] let the jokes breathe um actually just kind of established what is going on with this world student

[00:26:28] punk world I don't really know how to fix this because it just got abandoned after a chapter or

[00:26:32] still offered if this was dead on arrival I mean the problem with the gag manga is ultimately the way

[00:26:37] that you fix it is just be funnier yeah have you tried being funny Jordan says like hey author have

[00:26:43] you tried being funnier I mean I know you have in the past but like with this manga what could I say

[00:26:47] like the real reason this failed is that it just wasn't funny ultimately yeah yeah exactly and

[00:26:53] the pacing is a mess is really like they could fix the pacing I feel like maybe some of this would

[00:26:58] work better yeah good pacing is that's a good point is there anything like more structural people can

[00:27:04] think of us ways to improve this series maybe this series should have gone like the mashel route where

[00:27:09] like mashel got 10 chapters into just being a goofy gag manga is like all right fine let's let's

[00:27:14] be a shown in battle manga now and it ended up working for mashel like maybe this series could have

[00:27:20] just been like could have just kind of slowly turned into like a semi legit shown in battle manga like

[00:27:26] I did like the ideas for enemies they had that one guy who just made like traffic cones appear all

[00:27:32] over him oh yeah oh yeah I like that guy imagine if it was like every it's a battle mug by everyone

[00:27:37] has two enforce powers yeah that would work like because I think some of the parts it works better

[00:27:42] as when he actually lets the fights to breathe a little bit more and it's not constantly trying to

[00:27:46] cut away do a gag yeah if I could it could have just said one thing to this guy when he was writing

[00:27:51] it just be like dude chill oh if I can say don't well okay if I could say a second things to this guy

[00:27:58] I'd be like chill or just don't show again the miscellaneous but let's yeah so I actually was

[00:28:07] reading this in Jordan is this set in the same universe as SWAT which amber for context is a school

[00:28:12] about really shitty schools and students just fighting each other because that's all they know

[00:28:16] I don't even remember what SWAT was about but I believe you in terms of quality maybe because SWAT

[00:28:21] is fucking terrible yep all right fair that's totally fair you don't remember SWAT that was like

[00:28:27] our fifth episode ever one of the most forgettable manga we've ever read anyway yeah it was pretty

[00:28:32] shit amber how about you is there anything you feel you have an chance to say yet not just yet

[00:28:36] I don't think I think you make a good point here like at the document I'm looking at where you say

[00:28:40] I can't remember a lot of series of men are okay beating up female characters it's like honestly

[00:28:45] like he does treat hemoari as like equal combatant and like a pretty high power level combatant

[00:28:50] compared to like your average guy in the show I thought that was actually pretty cool yeah I was

[00:28:54] actually thinking about that and for instance the status Luffy has only actually had one main female

[00:29:00] antagonist he physically fights oh wow really yeah and that was Alvita at the start of the series every

[00:29:05] all their main antagonist is male that Luffy actually fights Alvita who is one of the two odour

[00:29:13] body styles and not the hot one so it's okay I guess yes of course well there's big mom yeah

[00:29:20] but he doesn't fight big mom directly oh okay how about this translation guys yeah the translator

[00:29:27] really liked this series and I just don't understand how it like why he thought it was funny

[00:29:31] the translators notes made this into a kakaku means plan level translation for me honestly there

[00:29:38] was just so many things where you'd say a word and they'd be like this actually means to this word

[00:29:42] and it's like well why didn't you use that word my favorite of those is the one where they

[00:29:47] introduce human bike and there's an interesting under that's like I don't know something about

[00:29:51] like murder cycles I don't I'm not entirely sure what he's going for

[00:29:57] there were so many notes where he's like I'm not sure if this is what he meant it may be this

[00:30:02] I think yeah he was like I think this is a pun on the celebrity name but I'm not quite sure

[00:30:09] yeah which is also one of the problems with reading these series 10 years after they came out right

[00:30:12] well 10 years after they came out from a different culture yeah so who's this George Clooney guy

[00:30:18] yeah well 16 years after it came out don't you feel old don't say that to me don't I didn't

[00:30:25] need that oh my god I feel like if this also would come out more recently it would have made

[00:30:29] fun the Shibuya arc in jiu jitsu kaisen if you two are familiar with that series I'm not very far

[00:30:33] into it I just kind of started it recently actually jiu jitsu kaisen has a really great arc where

[00:30:38] there's a character who actually has to enforce as his power it has one of the best fights in the

[00:30:41] series oh I love that yeah I won't spoil anything but he fights like a very very major bad guy

[00:30:48] oh that's fun and it's amazing when they fight yeah it's kind of like a gear fit kind of

[00:30:52] situation but yeah and then does anyone have any other miscellaneous thoughts or should I read off

[00:30:55] some of the notes maxi b r wonderful manga researcher has told us I thought it was funny how

[00:31:01] the giant head that ran gorilla high was made with NASA parts and then misoto was like god damn it

[00:31:08] NASA I thought that was god damn it NASA I can never forgive NASA yeah I can never forgive you NASA

[00:31:14] or something like that wouldn't like panic line I will never forgive the Japanese that a rock

[00:31:19] he is introduced into our vocabulary what's that from again I mean which part it's from part three

[00:31:24] of jojo at the very end oh god we're gonna go to Japan and he's super mad about it

[00:31:30] all right but I can always forgive the maxi b's so let's read off some of their fun facts this is

[00:31:35] the fastest cancellation weekly show and jump history so for context amber and author usually

[00:31:41] is told chapter eight how long they have to go so that's how bad this situation was he didn't even

[00:31:46] get feedback on the series before he got canceled to the point where there is famously a U19

[00:31:52] club where manga usually get to 19 chapters but if you get under 19 it's like notable so the fact

[00:31:59] that this got to chapter eight and canceled that's that's pretty crazy I wonder if yeah you got

[00:32:05] a wonder is it like were they like this wasn't good we gotta get rid of this or was he like man what

[00:32:08] am I doing what is this I don't know if you guys have ever watched I think you should leave

[00:32:13] this catch count I think you should leave so Tim Robinson actually got fired from snl two weeks in

[00:32:18] and he said Tina if they just put her hand on his shoulder was like you're this is not for you

[00:32:24] and I'm just imagining the editor that editor doing the same thing to him like uh but yeah

[00:32:29] so why says in the volume addition he tried to approach gagmonga from a different direction

[00:32:33] which did not work but he thinks jump for letting him try which they shouldn't have

[00:32:37] you know that's nice yeah and then do you remember back on cyborg grandpa G when I was like

[00:32:42] I used to know the guy who translated this they do muscle fetish art now oh they might have

[00:32:48] did the last month go we read perhaps that he read st muscle you two can understand the beauty of

[00:32:53] muscles yeah the translator according to max cb is named stranger ataru and then uh chaggikus started

[00:33:01] the same year as a toraco and so why being a big fan of the author he also had his own muscularly

[00:33:08] character introduced while smoking a tree it's much cooler in turaco the fuck that dude because he's

[00:33:12] a pedophile yeah and as everyone I'm sure is listening they want to know the bobo bo references

[00:33:17] sure and I know you've been excited about this part oh yes thankaku man and don patch are on the

[00:33:21] first color page of the series in chapter two ccguchus smashes did the link with statue and one

[00:33:26] resembling don patch from bobo bobo in chapter two one of the schools on the hierarchy map is

[00:33:30] nose hair technique high and the mysterious tiger mask is also just don patch having lots of spikes

[00:33:36] and gained a disguise that's why he insists he doesn't have a leak which is don patches weapon

[00:33:41] that's what that joke was i was so confused and explains why he freaks out seeing that one's

[00:33:47] linked covered in traffic cones i spikes oh i need to read bobo bobo i've never actually read it

[00:33:52] well it was pretty good i mean it's probably not as funny to me as it was when i was 15 but you

[00:33:58] know i read the first couple chapters to compare and yeah it's it's pretty good as we wrap up

[00:34:04] our conversation one again to the final verdict so starting with six word summaries from our

[00:34:08] community we have from maxi b nonsense manga simply makes no sense or paladin is this any good

[00:34:13] no no no no and alternatively ooh have fun on the honeymoon i don't know if that was a six word

[00:34:17] summary but thank you i hope i do have fun blonde moon who says yankie was funny until it wasn't

[00:34:22] i don't know i don't think it was ever funny in this manga that's so many dude rock says eight

[00:34:26] chapters somehow felt like 20 yep that is true and well at least it was short but it felt long

[00:34:31] gray potter says somehow makes less sense than bobo bo or alternatively it translates later

[00:34:35] notes uneironically the funniest part lord anuba says weekly shown and jump speed run any percent

[00:34:41] oh that reminds me of fun fact there actually has never been a manga that ran exactly nine chapters

[00:34:46] it was either this and then there's five or six manga maxi b said that ran for 10 chapters

[00:34:50] so i've just thought that's a weird statistic well i hope somebody decides to go for that specific

[00:34:56] number sometime that's gonna be the runtime for basket ball grandma yeah so amber if you're

[00:35:01] unaware i actually wrote a manga called basket ball grandma which for the record is way funnier

[00:35:05] than this right Jordan well it's not hard but yes but it is it is and then continuing on we have from

[00:35:11] red blade huh huh what huh what huh that was our reaction too

[00:35:16] i thought that's about right yep spubby says mark bobo bobo before even bobo game god that's

[00:35:23] that's jory i know that one that's a good that's a contender for best experience every

[00:35:27] of the year bobo bover before it even bobo boogan difficult little bit of the tongue to

[00:35:32] us through but pretty fucking good i love it spikes says no no no is a different act series

[00:35:37] and smooth criminal moonwalk straight to acts spook says the jury is in not funny and T wolfwood says

[00:35:43] comedy is subjective this is shit or this gagging manga is seriously unintelligible

[00:35:48] and then amber what was your six word summary best part is one that ended i love it

[00:35:52] hey what what what what what and then mine was yeah quitting was the right call

[00:35:58] god imagine if you just like let this go on for like an art he could he probably had enough

[00:36:02] star power he could have strong arm this into like fifty chapters i mean here's the thing i think

[00:36:07] it might have been a situation where like these panels were so busy it clearly took a lot of

[00:36:13] effort to create this manga and it wasn't funny so he was just like this is too much work and

[00:36:18] i'm not really getting anything out of it so i'm not gonna keep going yeah did you know if there

[00:36:24] was like a three or four page like one of the chapters like chapter five or six i think that

[00:36:28] all the art looks completely fine and then it just falls apart again it was really weird

[00:36:33] like he has like really straight line work and it's like oh this is so easy to look at and then

[00:36:37] it just yeah comes weird as shit again i did that was weird yeah i wasn't quite sure what that

[00:36:42] was about so it might have been a scan relation thing where they do sometimes add filters to make

[00:36:46] it more readable but it genuinely looked like maybe he didn't draw that chapter and he had

[00:36:50] as assistant i don't know it was very strange yeah maybe a 3d model yeah because the way that

[00:36:55] it looks normally is like as if he was like well if i put more lines you don't make up for the

[00:37:00] fact that i don't have any good jokes yes yeah lines but no punch lines exactly just kick lines

[00:37:07] that's parts of a good six or sorry in there and then uh do we all feel good this was a third five

[00:37:11] flop this hot piece of shit yeah i'm pretty confident like this being a flop for a good reason

[00:37:17] yeah so amber what would you say someone should check out instead well if you're looking for

[00:37:21] uh media about your like high school delinquent delinquent i really enjoyed uh

[00:37:26] river city girls and river city girls too oh that's really right games in the kune okun series

[00:37:30] which inspired this nice that's a great one and then how about you Jordan so i i have uh two

[00:37:36] if you're interested in high school delinquent comedy chromati high yeah that's a great series

[00:37:41] but if you're interested in just pure incoherence uh Xavier renegade angel which is you can somehow

[00:37:48] follow easier than this manga god and then my recommendation is actually a manga i got told about

[00:37:54] yesterday which is called ultimate rock paper scissors shadow toe andy roe 17 where it's about a

[00:38:00] rock paper scissors tournament which includes a psychic someone who can see into the future

[00:38:05] someone who can speak to ghosts in a multi billionaire and a kid who has super luck powers to

[00:38:11] decide in this tournament who gets one wish granted by the god of rock paper scissors and it gets

[00:38:17] absolutely absurd in kene kuman there is one tournament where in order to decide the who gets

[00:38:23] in they do a rock paper scissors tournament and one of the characters which just has like

[00:38:29] flaws for hands and can only do scissors and he's like fuck that's a fun hair choke than any

[00:38:36] choke in this maca yes literally all right so Jordan this actually is in the discussion

[00:38:42] is this the worst thing we've ever read somehow no so you would still say school judgment is

[00:38:46] worse than this i'd say school judgment is worse i think zon is even worse too like i forgot about

[00:38:54] zon which is funny because i brought up swat so amber for context swat which i mentioned is well

[00:38:58] the worst things we ever read and then the offer made a manga that's even worse than that

[00:39:03] yeah and it's it's it is genuinely if you look up zon you will be like how is this

[00:39:09] polish and shonen jump because it's potentially the worst draw in manga and shonen jump yeah

[00:39:13] obviously if i'm comparing it to oh and school judgment is a pedophile manga uh about 12

[00:39:19] year olds and that also ran in shonen jump and is on the official shonen jump app thank you shu asia

[00:39:25] it's by the artist of deaf note what does that mean exactly okay well we'll just bring up

[00:39:30] what we usually do when we talk about it which is that the um the artist said that he made an effort

[00:39:37] to show one of the characters breasts develop in real time and the characters are 14 years of

[00:39:43] 12 david they're 12 yeah yeah dcy our guests did not want to finish the manga and we didn't blame him

[00:39:49] yeah that makes sense because it's called school judgment and the first chapter is like it's school

[00:39:53] judgment it's like phoenix right in middle school and we're like all right cool and then the next

[00:39:58] phoenix appears it's like oh that's not what this mom goes actually about um okay well you would

[00:40:04] think the artist of deaf note could actually do whatever he wanted but i guess that's what he wants

[00:40:08] i like to be the problem yeah he's like i just want to draw sexy 12 year olds guys come on oh

[00:40:15] so that's bad for a different reason than zon and uh swat but that's go to jail was the two we put in

[00:40:22] jail but but yeah chagachan the thing is it is bad it is hard to follow but it's kind of interesting

[00:40:29] in a lot of moments and there are a few jokes that do land this is not completely without merit in

[00:40:35] the same way that swat and zon are just wastes of time just completely there's no reason to ever

[00:40:42] read those manga now jordan is this better worse than hechagokis under control which is the worst

[00:40:47] gag manga i think we've ever read i still think that fuck what was that one about the bodyguard the

[00:40:52] kid bodyguard with all the penis josemy yeah i think that one's first i think first of all that

[00:40:56] one's worse you're right that is worse you're right i remember its name it was that i think the

[00:41:03] chagacha is still better than that one all right but i think itchagokis is better than chagacha

[00:41:09] all right that's fair so when we get into wrap up and get on talking about this manga amber i want

[00:41:13] to say thank you so much for joining us you've made it to the end you never have to think of

[00:41:17] that chagacha ever again where can people find all of the fantastic things you do okay so you
