MAL Description:

In a shopping district of closed shutters and turned keys, Ajimaru, a lone Chinese restaurant, bravely faces its impending closure. Everything changes when they serve up a free meal to the starving Nasunosuke, wandering waiter extraordinaire, who might be just what they need to spice up their shop!

[00:00:00] Hey, listen there WhatsApp you may notice something a little different in this episode and the thing is David usually one of the two hosts on here is currently on his honeymoon in New Zealand. Oh my god

[00:00:24] right but yeah so because of that we have the wonderful Dylan who is our editor and also the editor of anime out of context our sister podcast who you keep sending erotic messages about to us so you probably know what that is anyway Dylan take it away.

[00:00:43] This episode is brought to you ad free thanks to all of our wonderful patrons you get tons of exclusive content and help us keep the show going by joining a patreon dot com slash shonen flop and welcome to this episode of shonen flop where we talk about manga and shonen jump that didn't make it big i'm Dylan I'm Jordan and next week David will be back if you'd like to read along with us be sure to join the discussion in our discord and submit your six word summary you can find a link to the discord in our episode description and on our

[00:01:13] website shonenflop.com I'd also like to say it's gonna be episode 100 and for our guests we're gonna have the wonderful void burger aka Jess oh my god I'm so excited I've been following her since high school so this is gonna be fun. Oh yeah getting a lot of big names lately. Oh my god yeah that's because she's also from skull tenders. We're lucky enough to have gotten everybody from skull tenders.

[00:01:43] And that's pretty awesome. That is pretty great but this week we're talking about service wars and normally this is where there's an extra guest who gives a 30 second intro however.

[00:01:54] Flat twist Dylan is the guest I'm the guest and also the co host for this one and also the editor oh my god Dylan do you want to tell us about what you're up to as the guest so those of you who know me know that I'm the editor of anime at a context as well as the occasional guest toast and the voice of their disclaimer.

[00:02:12] And that aside from doing that editing shonenflop that's all I really do. Good hey that's enough that'll do Dylan that'll do which probably actually talk about the the manga we're covering this week.

[00:02:24] I suppose that we should listen or David is better keeping us on task. I'm sorry anyway. Ah so this is service wars it was written by hot to mune suren and apparently this may be a pen name.

[00:02:40] Tucker says that hot to mune essentially means pigeon breast. I know that hot to means pigeon because I played hot to full boyfriend. Oh that's what it means.

[00:02:50] Oh the pigeon dating sim hot to full okay pigeon okay yes that's a pigeon dating sim and sudoon is apparently very close to sudo which means brain as everyone knows the bird that you make an origami.

[00:03:04] The author's first major work was actually titled the naked swan so perhaps this may be a pen name chosen to pair with that original work and max to be as confirmed that it is indeed a pen name and his editor hates it.

[00:03:18] Apparently this guy hasn't seemed to have been an assistant for anybody notable nor have they had any notable assistance but there are other works include the aforementioned naked swan 2017 to 2018 for volumes and jump less.

[00:03:36] Apparently it's about Kakarou Shiratori a beautiful high school student selling it everything but carries a dark secret Dylan he's an exhibitionist.

[00:03:46] Oh my god oh the mishaps of comedic situations he must get into the high jinks and hey you know you may say that four volumes that's a flop but apparently this was originally intended to be one volume so actually that's pretty good.

[00:04:04] Still technically qualifies for shown in flop I guess but still qualify as but I mean hey if you only tended to go for one volume and end up having four you know what what more can you ask for.

[00:04:15] And his next work though 2019 2020 me Thomas security spirit busters not only is that an episode that's one of the better series that we have covered on here easily one of the better series I really liked that series

[00:04:29] and that is about an exorcist named joe me Thomas who was actually scared of ghosts and loves basketball that is episode 11 actually.

[00:04:39] I actually went and read some of that manga after we finished reading this and I was like okay yeah I can definitely see the through line from how he went from

[00:04:49] to the security to service wars and how he's grown as a mangaka yeah there's definitely through line says very much the exact same man.

[00:04:59] Very similar guy you can tell similar comedic styling definitely similar art but yeah we're not talking about that stuff today we're talking about service wars this ran and shown and jump plus

[00:05:11] apparently internationally ran in manga plus and it ran from March 26th 2023 to December 3rd 2023 so not a full year which is why it's on this show.

[00:05:22] And it under the series it replaced and series it replaced it maxi b notes that this is not how jump plus works I don't know anything about jump plus but I'm assuming that they do.

[00:05:35] By the way shown and jump plus is in fact just a mobile app and website that explains it see in weekly shown and jump you can only have a certain number of manga but the internet is infinite you could have as much manga as you want all of it all of the manga all of it but a series

[00:05:52] that started around the same time as it was the pension life vampire by show eachy to Gucci which also ran for four volumes so maybe that's flop eligible but we're not talking about that today we're talking about service wars went for 37 chapters and four volumes and let's get into the god damn plot summary Dylan.

[00:06:10] Hell yeah.

[00:06:11] The adjumaru ramen shop is in trouble the place run by you all and his daughter rengay is in some serious debt and exist in a mostly dead shopping district one day a man collapses outside of their restaurant but when they try and feed him he turns the tables literally on them and instead serves them his name is not so nosuke and he is a wandering waiter in gratitude for giving food he starts working bringing in a ton of customers including a famous.

[00:06:41] The owner of the restaurant is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who

[00:07:11] is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is a man who is

[00:07:41] a woman named my blanket.

[00:07:48] Who complains about the temperature it is in the store and is an old flame of Nassinowskays after servicing the hell out of her.

[00:07:58] Oh yeah, she falls back in love with him and decides to help the ramen shop but just then the rest of the

[00:08:04] flame shows up to intimidate them before riding out of the whole manga on their bicycles like they'd

[00:08:11] never show up again.

[00:08:12] They're fucking disappeared, they do not matter.

[00:08:15] I mean it, they ride out of the manga.

[00:08:17] They say we'll be back this ain't over and they're gone for good.

[00:08:21] They're gone, they were wrong, it was over and they were not back.

[00:08:24] Scoping out the district, they discover a punk bagel shop run by a guy named Bagel who serves Bagels with

[00:08:32] chocolate nails in them.

[00:08:33] He literally goes up and he's like, ah, you want my bagel full of nails?

[00:08:38] You all want some of my bagel full of nails in some poison coffee.

[00:08:43] And then Nassinowskays like, now I am on the receiving end of customer service so I will

[00:08:48] be the ultimate customer.

[00:08:50] I believe that he bows in the golden ratio.

[00:08:54] His bow anytime he does it they highlight the golden ratio behind him.

[00:08:59] It's amazing.

[00:09:01] And so he eats it and he's like, the nails are made out of chocolate.

[00:09:05] And you say poison coffee, it's just regular coffee with an extra espresso shot.

[00:09:10] And Bagel is so happy about that that he just joins their team.

[00:09:14] Next after Nassinowskays saves a woman who was brainwashed into overworking by Heaven and

[00:09:19] I, the group meets Tajima, a salesman and Heaven and I who tricks people into working for

[00:09:25] them by using big business words.

[00:09:28] Spouting them non stop talking about, you know, mergers, acquisitions and, uh,

[00:09:35] retirement plans, whatever like all that bullshit.

[00:09:38] Oh yeah, Nassinowskays defeats him by forcing him to take a break.

[00:09:44] It was fantastic he just knocks him out.

[00:09:46] It's really good popcorn Dylan Tajima then invites Nassinowskays to the mandatory tournament

[00:09:51] are the king of service.

[00:09:54] If he wins then Heaven and I will pay for Ajmaar's renovation and continued upkeep.

[00:09:59] But if he loses then they will continue their harassment until they're driven out of

[00:10:03] business.

[00:10:04] I like that because it's just kind of like, well what do you do if we lose and he's like

[00:10:08] we're just going to keep going and we will eventually destroy you.

[00:10:11] We're gonna win eventually, you can't keep this up forever.

[00:10:14] This is your out.

[00:10:15] Yeah, it's like all right cool rock and a hard place.

[00:10:18] Naturally Nassinowskays accepts.

[00:10:20] And in the tournament arc they meet LOSEN, a legendary convenience store clerk, Yoneki

[00:10:25] a muscle bound for light attendant and Instagram eGurl also known as Sean's dummy mommy.

[00:10:30] Hey!

[00:10:31] And so Jima, a security guy as well as professor Pomeranian, a teacher who wears Pomeranian

[00:10:37] mask to hide his identity, Yago, a genius doctor and QQ, a literal serial killer who

[00:10:44] believes that killing people is the ultimate surface.

[00:10:47] An actual serial killer.

[00:10:50] They introduce QQ as saying they have 300 years of mandatory service to make up for murder.

[00:10:57] Yes, and there's one more person.

[00:10:59] Oh yes, forget about this guy, he matters.

[00:11:03] His name is dumb as shit, his name is corn.

[00:11:05] He is Nassinowskays former co-worker and rival who works at a host club.

[00:11:09] During the matches, these service workers reveal that they can use service energy to create

[00:11:14] Jiu-Jitsu kaisen style domain expansion.

[00:11:17] It's literally domain expansion.

[00:11:18] It is, every time it's brought up, I think they even call it that at one point in the

[00:11:23] translation.

[00:11:24] I think they literally call it field expansion?

[00:11:27] Yes, they call it field expansion.

[00:11:29] Come on, y'all!

[00:11:31] They're not even hiding it.

[00:11:32] I mean, I think it was literally like a spoof at that point.

[00:11:35] We're in a tournament arc we may as well bring in some other shonen battle elements.

[00:11:40] Yeah, it's, I mean, it's a tournament arc for customer service.

[00:11:43] What do you want?

[00:11:45] After several rounds, the finals consist of Nassinowskays.

[00:11:48] Corn, QQ and Sojima.

[00:11:50] Corn Sojima are knocked out while Nassinowskays uses his obrigene eyes to determine that QQ used

[00:11:54] to be an incredible service worker just named Q.

[00:11:57] But after being hit in the head while overworking themselves they were given a super-service serum

[00:12:02] which is really hard to say with a list by the way.

[00:12:04] Oh god!

[00:12:05] Also known as the SSS by Konomizu, the president of heaven and I which drove him to insanity

[00:12:12] and murder.

[00:12:14] Did it drive him to murder?

[00:12:16] Yes, we'll get to that.

[00:12:18] We'll get to that!

[00:12:19] Nassinowskays summons Umatunasu to reignite his love of service and turn QQ back to normal.

[00:12:25] Just then Konomizu makes Tajima grow into a giant fucking kaiju with just by injecting

[00:12:31] it with a bunch of service serum.

[00:12:33] He grosses a lot, he breaks out of the stadium, causing all of the service workers to join

[00:12:39] forces and fight him.

[00:12:40] The end result causes Tajima and Konomizu to fly halfway across the world and land in Egypt?

[00:12:47] I guess they landed Egypt, right?

[00:12:49] I guess but they're dead, right?

[00:12:51] They died!

[00:12:52] I mean look if Team Rocket can survive.

[00:12:55] I guess if Team Rocket can survive.

[00:12:57] I guess they can survive.

[00:12:58] You know.

[00:12:59] And then we have our classic failed manga time skip to three years later.

[00:13:05] Q works for Ajimaru since he technically didn't kill anyone,

[00:13:09] even though he fucking killed a lot of people.

[00:13:11] He absolutely killed people!

[00:13:13] He absolutely killed people!

[00:13:16] It's bullshit!

[00:13:17] He had a massive ball and chain that he was bashing people over the head with.

[00:13:22] These people were fucking dead.

[00:13:24] One guy started moving and he's like, oh I guess I didn't kill that guy yet.

[00:13:28] And that is a direct implication that he killed the other people, right?

[00:13:32] Like you don't say it.

[00:13:33] Yeah, yeah, he's stating.

[00:13:34] Other people died.

[00:13:37] My has married Bagel despite just being way ahead over the heels,

[00:13:40] still in love with Nassanozka even states at one point.

[00:13:44] You can't always get the one you love.

[00:13:46] Bagel's like the fuck you say?

[00:13:48] You can't always marry the person you love!

[00:13:50] Yeah, they have a kid.

[00:13:52] They have a kid with a tiny little bit hair.

[00:13:54] Look, I'm just saying that little hairstyle kind of looks like Nassanozka's bagel.

[00:14:00] Hey Bagel, I don't know.

[00:14:01] You might not be the father.

[00:14:03] But they did have Bagel's Mohawk flattened down,

[00:14:05] so it kind of looked similar.

[00:14:07] Maybe what they're going for.

[00:14:08] I doubt it though.

[00:14:09] I think that's Nassanozka's kid.

[00:14:11] It's either Nassanozka's kid or she's just like,

[00:14:13] I'm just gonna style in like Nassanozka, which is creepy.

[00:14:16] Yeah, it's a little creepy.

[00:14:17] Kind of weird.

[00:14:19] Yoneki, the buff stewardess and corn are apparently together.

[00:14:24] Kind of doing their own thing yet corn still is hitting on Renge.

[00:14:28] It's pretty seedy.

[00:14:29] Like I don't know.

[00:14:29] I thought it was a little nicer than that.

[00:14:31] But I definitely see where you're coming from.

[00:14:34] It is kind of like, hey, you're old enough to come to my bar.

[00:14:36] Come to my host club.

[00:14:38] But it's-

[00:14:38] Yeah, I guess it depends on the type of host club that it is.

[00:14:41] Yeah!

[00:14:42] That's true.

[00:14:43] But he, yeah, this is on host club now, which is pretty sick.

[00:14:46] Pretty sick, good for him.

[00:14:47] And Nassanozka has just wandered the earth

[00:14:51] to become the service warrior as they hint at in the final splash page

[00:14:56] where it shows him delivering a giant squid to a whale.

[00:14:59] Yes, really?

[00:15:01] Was the service warrior like the coming Suven Service War?

[00:15:03] Was that a joke or do you think they were being serious?

[00:15:06] I feel like the author was kind of joking, kind of not.

[00:15:09] He's like, I'm leaving myself open to this, you know?

[00:15:12] But in case it has run its course, he's an out.

[00:15:16] We'll get into it but I feel like the author,

[00:15:18] it would be understandable if the author felt like he left a lot on the table here,

[00:15:24] so to speak.

[00:15:25] So I would understand if he feels like he would want to continue this,

[00:15:28] but I also think he doesn't feel like he's going to be given that chance.

[00:15:32] Yeah, I actually checked out his Twitter.

[00:15:34] He has all he's been really been doing is pimping out the published volumes saying,

[00:15:39] hey, if you want to buy it or get some merch, it's over here.

[00:15:43] I mean, hey, it is his most recent work at least.

[00:15:45] Yeah.

[00:15:46] But yeah, let's get into the characters!

[00:15:48] You know, there are a couple characters in this.

[00:15:50] Kind of, sort of, not really, but yeah.

[00:15:52] Yeah, sort of.

[00:15:53] This is a few.

[00:15:54] First takes first is talk about Nasa Noseke.

[00:15:56] He is a super waiter,

[00:15:58] a absolutely like a play on the wandering samurai trope.

[00:16:02] Oh yeah, that's definitely how they introduce him.

[00:16:05] Yeah.

[00:16:05] And he has the Aubur Jean Eyes which are just straight up the sharing gun.

[00:16:10] He's got his Aubur Jean Eyes thing,

[00:16:12] priest, his customer service skills by 15%.

[00:16:15] And apparently he has a medallion that they use as a battery.

[00:16:19] Oh God, I don't remember that part.

[00:16:22] It was during the final bit, he was wearing the necklace

[00:16:26] after he gets flushed and QQ just says, all right,

[00:16:30] I'm going to give you my energy so that you'll be able to summon the goddess.

[00:16:35] Yeah, he's got like an eggplant medallion

[00:16:38] that's like, you got 0% energy.

[00:16:40] Oh, you got 10% energy.

[00:16:42] You know, like that kind of thing?

[00:16:43] Yeah, it charges as he delivers excellent customer service

[00:16:47] and then when it's fully charged, it's kind of like a limit breath.

[00:16:50] Yeah, exactly.

[00:16:51] One of the things I really like about Nelson Noscay

[00:16:53] is on his off days, he just shuts down.

[00:16:56] Oh yeah, I mean if you're a customer service worker

[00:16:59] and you work even like a double,

[00:17:01] the next day you're gone.

[00:17:02] So imagine being that level of on top of things.

[00:17:05] I related to that super hard.

[00:17:07] Yeah, they show him during his off time just during one issue

[00:17:11] and he just shuts down for a bit

[00:17:13] and then his interrupts like shit, shit, shit,

[00:17:15] gets himself all pretty double looking like an eggplant

[00:17:17] because that's his style.

[00:17:19] He is completely comatose just like on the ground drooling.

[00:17:23] Face down, ass up.

[00:17:25] That's the way he likes to recharge.

[00:17:27] Totally relate to that.

[00:17:28] That was me after my most recent job

[00:17:30] where you just kind of collapse it as the second you get anywhere.

[00:17:34] You fall down wherever it's not even slightly comfortable.

[00:17:37] You're out.

[00:17:37] Yeah, yeah, I was ugh.

[00:17:39] But yeah, he has decided to travel the world

[00:17:42] to become a better service worker

[00:17:44] and he truly loves working service.

[00:17:48] Yeah.

[00:17:49] He loves servicing people.

[00:17:50] Just services.

[00:17:51] Everybody.

[00:17:52] Yeah, the reason he actually left is because he wasn't able

[00:17:55] to properly service blanket

[00:17:58] and then he was like, all right, I gotta do better now.

[00:18:00] So we left to wander the globe

[00:18:02] and improve his service skills when really all blanket needed was a hug.

[00:18:05] That kind of is all blanket needed.

[00:18:07] Maybe a blanket.

[00:18:08] Yeah, just give someone a hug.

[00:18:10] Give someone a hug today.

[00:18:11] Warm them up.

[00:18:11] Yeah.

[00:18:12] Don't wait they'll stop complaining about being cold.

[00:18:13] But yeah, the first time we meet him,

[00:18:15] he is feeding a bear.

[00:18:18] He is giving a bear a fish.

[00:18:20] And also knocking it out at the same time.

[00:18:22] Yes.

[00:18:22] I don't know if he was feeding it

[00:18:23] or if he was just beating the shit out of it.

[00:18:26] There's a couple times where his servicing

[00:18:29] is very hard to distinguish from just violence.

[00:18:34] He's normally not typically very violent,

[00:18:36] but sometimes he does beat the shit out of someone

[00:18:40] just to provide excellent customer service like knocking them out.

[00:18:43] But hey, maybe they need an app.

[00:18:44] One of his moves is he suddenly pulls out

[00:18:47] a back massager on somebody.

[00:18:50] And they're just like, oh my god, thank you so much.

[00:18:52] During the Kajufite between,

[00:18:55] not the Kajufite with Tajima,

[00:18:58] but the Kajufite that was more specifically

[00:19:00] between when QQ had turned into the embodiment of death

[00:19:05] and Nasunosuke summoned Umatanasu, I believe Umatanasu.

[00:19:09] I looked it up.

[00:19:10] I think Umatanashi is like a Japanese term

[00:19:14] that roughly translates into hospitality.

[00:19:17] That makes sense.

[00:19:18] So he summons basically the Avatar of Umatanasu

[00:19:22] and forges using energy, a giant back massager

[00:19:25] just to just to end the five little earlier.

[00:19:27] There's a couple times where some ins

[00:19:29] or just pulls out random back massagers.

[00:19:32] And yet they're not the kind one would expect.

[00:19:34] They're not like the nice ones that wrap around

[00:19:36] vibrating pulse.

[00:19:37] They're just a little ballon stick.

[00:19:38] This is old school shit.

[00:19:40] Yeah.

[00:19:40] This is pre-electricity shit.

[00:19:42] Next up we have Rengay, daughter of Ajimaru's owner

[00:19:45] and is basically the audience surrogate

[00:19:48] who just makes shock faces going,

[00:19:50] oh my god!

[00:19:50] Ah!

[00:19:51] And stating generic,

[00:19:53] I can't believe that happened the entire time.

[00:19:56] She has no agency as a character.

[00:19:59] Not really, no.

[00:20:00] She doesn't really do much.

[00:20:01] She is notably Gaslit by the last few chapters.

[00:20:05] Yes.

[00:20:08] Basically what happens is there's a point where

[00:20:10] I really actually thought this was really funny.

[00:20:13] Soajima falls and is impaled on a spike.

[00:20:17] You see the spike come through his guts.

[00:20:20] It looks like he is dead.

[00:20:22] People are like, oh my god,

[00:20:24] he died.

[00:20:24] Like it is brutal.

[00:20:26] And then he just shows up.

[00:20:27] It's like no I'm good.

[00:20:28] I'm fine.

[00:20:29] I was wearing this little girdle to help my back.

[00:20:32] And that protected me.

[00:20:33] And it protected me.

[00:20:35] She's like, no.

[00:20:36] I saw you get impaled.

[00:20:37] I was like, no, I don't know what you're talking about.

[00:20:38] I didn't get impaled.

[00:20:39] I didn't get impaled.

[00:20:40] What are you talking about?

[00:20:41] And I think other people are like,

[00:20:42] Rengue, what are you talking about?

[00:20:44] He didn't get impaled.

[00:20:45] Yeah, Rengue, just drop it, man.

[00:20:47] Which I thought was really funny.

[00:20:49] That definitely felt like harping on your typical,

[00:20:53] no, he was totally fine the entire time in the audience

[00:20:56] saying, mother fuckers dead, come on.

[00:20:57] Yeah, I think that that was either a retcon.

[00:21:01] I mean, that was a retcon definitely.

[00:21:03] But it was the author kind of being like,

[00:21:05] don't worry about it.

[00:21:06] Lamp shading it kind of.

[00:21:08] Forget about it actually.

[00:21:09] Forget about it.

[00:21:10] It didn't happen.

[00:21:12] Forget about it.

[00:21:13] We can't have QQ actually kill anyone despite the fact that, you know,

[00:21:17] that's 100% why he did it.

[00:21:20] Yes, I forgot.

[00:21:22] That's 100% why he did it.

[00:21:24] And then aside from that,

[00:21:25] Rengue kind of has the hot,

[00:21:26] it's for Nasa Nosek.

[00:21:27] She asks him out on a date at one point and then that's it.

[00:21:31] It's kind of hard to tell like because she asked him if he wanted to go

[00:21:34] to the bagel shop, which could be a date,

[00:21:37] could not be.

[00:21:37] She's like really excited when he said,

[00:21:40] yes, the way she was excited and then tried to play it cool.

[00:21:43] Yeah.

[00:21:43] I think she was down for it.

[00:21:45] I can see that definitely.

[00:21:46] Although I feel like,

[00:21:47] unfortunately for her Nasa Nosek,

[00:21:49] only has eyes for service.

[00:21:51] And maybe corn.

[00:21:52] Maybe corn at one point perhaps blanket,

[00:21:55] but I don't think so blanket.

[00:21:57] I'm sorry.

[00:21:57] I'm not really.

[00:21:58] No, I think customer service and corn and with corn,

[00:22:02] it's kind of like that rival to lover dynamic.

[00:22:05] Yeah, it definitely feels more that corn is into him

[00:22:09] than he is into corn.

[00:22:10] Oh, yeah.

[00:22:10] Speaking of which, let's get into corn.

[00:22:17] 90s kids will get that joke.

[00:22:20] So corn's Nasa Nosek's rivalry works at a host club

[00:22:23] and he's essentially Nasa Nosek's Vegeta.

[00:22:27] Yeah, he's the slightly edgy grumpy guy.

[00:22:30] Still has a heart of gold but kind of sundare.

[00:22:34] Oh, very sundare.

[00:22:35] Yeah, the entire reason he became so good at customer service

[00:22:39] is because he wanted to pass up Nasa Nosek

[00:22:43] because I'm and have him get in the way

[00:22:44] in the ways he think.

[00:22:45] I don't know.

[00:22:45] I'm subservient to him or something.

[00:22:47] Yeah, what's great about this style of mongon?

[00:22:49] You run into this in like food wars too.

[00:22:52] It's like when characters defeat somebody,

[00:22:56] even if they're like quote unquote evil,

[00:22:58] it's like it's not actually evil.

[00:23:00] I mean except for QQ, that's a different thing.

[00:23:02] That is a different thing.

[00:23:04] Like there's at one point you see corn

[00:23:06] like standing next to a like a passed out guy

[00:23:09] and you're like, oh my god, he just beat the shit out of that guy.

[00:23:12] But the guy wakes up and he's like, oh my god,

[00:23:14] thank you so much.

[00:23:15] I needed that 20 minutes of sleep.

[00:23:17] And then corn's like, do you think the 20 minutes of sleep?

[00:23:21] Huh?

[00:23:21] I think you'd use another few hours.

[00:23:23] That they just he does a fist in the North Star

[00:23:26] but instead of his head exploding, he just goes to sleep.

[00:23:29] Yeah, it doesn't need to that to his inner thighs.

[00:23:31] He just like goes between his leg and structures

[00:23:33] jabbing him a million times.

[00:23:34] I think so.

[00:23:35] Yeah, he does like acupuncture techniques.

[00:23:37] That's what he spent his time learning.

[00:23:39] Yes.

[00:23:40] And to be clear, this is a good thing for that guy.

[00:23:43] He's like, oh, I feel so rested.

[00:23:46] Oh my god.

[00:23:47] I totally needed to be assaulted into sleeping.

[00:23:49] I needed that yes.

[00:23:51] What more do you say about corn?

[00:23:53] I don't know.

[00:23:53] The audience during the tournament arc

[00:23:55] definitely describes him as being hot.

[00:23:57] I have no idea what's up with his face paint.

[00:23:59] Is it supposed to like corn kernels

[00:24:00] that are removed from his face?

[00:24:02] I don't know.

[00:24:03] I think I know what you're talking about

[00:24:04] and I had no clue what was going on up there.

[00:24:07] Yeah, um, and then really aside from corn,

[00:24:10] there's only one other notable

[00:24:12] like character has anything that really we haven't said

[00:24:15] and that's QQ who is described specifically

[00:24:19] as endroxanous.

[00:24:20] They don't know what sex QQ is.

[00:24:24] They say gender unknown.

[00:24:26] However, they drop that after a page.

[00:24:28] After that one page,

[00:24:30] they use he-him pronouns for QQ.

[00:24:33] For the first page, they did use them and they.

[00:24:35] Okay, yeah.

[00:24:36] Which I thought was actually really cool.

[00:24:38] It's like, oh, cool.

[00:24:39] Are we gonna have like a non-binary character?

[00:24:41] That's a fascinating way to approach it.

[00:24:43] On one hand, I thought it was cool on the other hand.

[00:24:45] It's like, uh-huh.

[00:24:46] You make the endroxanous guy,

[00:24:48] a horrible murderer.

[00:24:49] Yeah, that's cool.

[00:24:50] Yeah.

[00:24:51] That's cool.

[00:24:51] Yeah, that is a trope.

[00:24:53] It is unfortunately a trope.

[00:24:55] The evil and Drauganous one.

[00:24:57] Dispawning that phone with the trope.

[00:24:58] Yeah.

[00:24:58] QQ wasn't really evil despite the fact that-

[00:25:01] That was so stupid.

[00:25:03] QQ fucking murdered a bunch of people.

[00:25:06] I'm sorry.

[00:25:07] QQ murdered people.

[00:25:08] He was going to murder an entire crowd.

[00:25:11] At the very least, he should be in jail

[00:25:14] for so many counts of attempted murder.

[00:25:17] I'm sorry.

[00:25:17] Is attempted murder not a crime in Japan?

[00:25:21] What the fuck?

[00:25:22] They'll wipe it away by the people getting up

[00:25:24] and then saying, oh man,

[00:25:25] my bones feel like they were put back into place.

[00:25:27] I'm feeling great.

[00:25:28] Yeah, except they didn't do that.

[00:25:30] No, they did.

[00:25:31] They did not even touch that.

[00:25:32] Like for other characters,

[00:25:33] they do violence and then the guy gets up

[00:25:35] and he's like, oh, thank you.

[00:25:36] You like really put my back into place or something.

[00:25:40] For the magical doctor,

[00:25:41] that was the thing where he would throw

[00:25:43] like compresses on them

[00:25:44] and they would then magically get better.

[00:25:46] They don't touch on that at all with QQ.

[00:25:48] QQ was just murdering people with a ball and chain

[00:25:51] or strangling them or crushing them in a stadium

[00:25:55] or throwing them off a pit into spy.

[00:25:58] QQ's whole thing is that because life is pain,

[00:26:01] killing people is actually the best service you can do

[00:26:04] to release them from that.

[00:26:05] Which if they had stuck more to their guns with that,

[00:26:08] I think could be really interesting.

[00:26:10] If they didn't go the route of, oh no,

[00:26:13] this person was actually just made evil by some goo.

[00:26:15] Yeah, he got the super service serum.

[00:26:19] Anyway, let's get into wide failed

[00:26:20] so I can just talk about QQ a little bit more.

[00:26:23] So to make QQ work,

[00:26:25] he belongs in a different manga.

[00:26:27] Yeah, QQ does not fit the vibe of this gag manga.

[00:26:30] QQ does not fit in service wars.

[00:26:33] I'm sorry.

[00:26:34] I don't even think the hop does.

[00:26:36] You mean soajima?

[00:26:38] The security guy?

[00:26:39] Yeah.

[00:26:40] Yeah.

[00:26:41] But at least soajima is technically serves people sort of

[00:26:46] but it's also, I feel like,

[00:26:47] I mean here's the thing man,

[00:26:49] this manga should not have had the tournament arc.

[00:26:52] The tournament arc killed it.

[00:26:53] Yeah.

[00:26:54] Having service workers fight against each other,

[00:26:57] it ended up not making a lot of sense

[00:26:59] because by definition you kind of need a customer.

[00:27:02] Exactly.

[00:27:03] If they were going to do that,

[00:27:04] it would probably be more long lines

[00:27:06] of them competing to serve a group the best

[00:27:09] and then getting scored at the end

[00:27:10] if you're going to do a tournament arc.

[00:27:11] And that's a big if.

[00:27:13] Like food wars?

[00:27:14] Yeah, there you go with food wars

[00:27:16] where they're actually being judged

[00:27:17] on the quality of what they make at the end.

[00:27:19] Not fighting each other physically.

[00:27:21] The problem with the tournament arc is that

[00:27:23] for its style,

[00:27:25] it went with like dragon balls

[00:27:27] a year hunter hunter even you Haka show

[00:27:30] for its archetyping when it should have gone with food wars.

[00:27:33] Yeah, it should not have been your standard shown in battle.

[00:27:37] It should have been more of a competition,

[00:27:39] more of like a sports manga even.

[00:27:41] And they try and justify it with like service energy.

[00:27:44] Okay, that's kind of funny.

[00:27:45] But then at the end they're like

[00:27:47] the more service energy you put in

[00:27:49] these chairs bombs explode which got really confusing

[00:27:53] and they didn't really do much with actually.

[00:27:55] And it felt like it disappeared shortly.

[00:27:57] It was used for maybe five panels

[00:27:59] and then the idea was dropped.

[00:28:01] This feels like we've talked about how

[00:28:04] it seems like the editor often comes up to people

[00:28:07] and is like, hey, your manga's failing

[00:28:09] put in a tournament arc.

[00:28:10] That's kind of what they mentioned

[00:28:12] when they swapped to the tournament arc

[00:28:14] when they jumped from it kind of being

[00:28:16] this more customer service,

[00:28:18] not competition but the world's expanding around

[00:28:20] the world that we're building.

[00:28:21] They were doing monster the week.

[00:28:22] And then I think they actually specifically

[00:28:25] mentioned in the translation

[00:28:26] the mandatory tournament arc.

[00:28:29] Oh god, which I think the monke was a little bit like,

[00:28:33] fine, fuck it, whatever you're killing me here.

[00:28:35] I feel like the manga could have had to know

[00:28:37] that this was a problem.

[00:28:38] I mean, for instance, like,

[00:28:40] claim, which is what they were building up

[00:28:42] to disappear completely disappeared

[00:28:45] which was such a shame

[00:28:47] because for the first couple chapters

[00:28:49] where they had one or two guys coming in

[00:28:51] who were proving to be like an actual hassle,

[00:28:53] a problem for Nasunaske to solve.

[00:28:56] And then they threw all of them in at once.

[00:28:59] That was disappointing.

[00:29:00] Listener, you may have noticed

[00:29:02] that the vast majority of our criticisms

[00:29:05] are about when the tournament arc starts.

[00:29:07] We've barely set had any criticism

[00:29:09] about the beginning of the series.

[00:29:12] When it takes place in the restaurant,

[00:29:13] I love that part of it.

[00:29:15] If it would have stayed there for longer,

[00:29:17] I would have been so happy.

[00:29:19] It is such a shame.

[00:29:20] But I also, here's the thing,

[00:29:22] there's two thoughts in my head here.

[00:29:24] First of all, I think that part of the reason

[00:29:26] we liked that part so much

[00:29:27] because we have experience in customer service.

[00:29:30] Both of us, we were able to relate so hard.

[00:29:32] You listen to the Chibi to hear it.

[00:29:34] We related so hard to that first chapter

[00:29:36] because we've had shitty customers

[00:29:38] and it was really cathartic

[00:29:40] to see Nasunaske show that motherfucker up.

[00:29:42] But problem is most of the people

[00:29:45] reading this kind of manga probably kids

[00:29:47] who haven't had jobs like this.

[00:29:49] And so I can see them not relating to this premise.

[00:29:53] Which, I think if this had been

[00:29:55] maybe made for a slightly more mature audience

[00:29:59] and put in the...

[00:30:01] What is the more adult version of Shonen Jump?

[00:30:05] Jump squared?

[00:30:05] I think so.

[00:30:06] If it had been in something like that

[00:30:08] if it had been Zaymore...

[00:30:10] Yeah, if it had been more adult-focused

[00:30:12] if it had been in a more adult-focused platform

[00:30:14] or at least older teenager.

[00:30:17] So the kids who are working their first jobs.

[00:30:18] If it had been focused more towards that goal...

[00:30:20] Yeah.

[00:30:21] I think it would have found its audience

[00:30:23] and wouldn't have had to do

[00:30:25] the standard Shonen tournament arc.

[00:30:27] It just kind of feels like

[00:30:29] it's in an odd situation with that

[00:30:31] where it's not really mature enough, I feel.

[00:30:34] It's very much in all ages manga.

[00:30:36] Yeah.

[00:30:37] But it's about something

[00:30:39] that only older people

[00:30:40] who have worked jobs can relate to.

[00:30:43] Yeah, it definitely is kind of

[00:30:45] an audience issue mixed with

[00:30:48] I'm sure editorial meddling.

[00:30:50] It's a similar issue that Mashall had to deal with

[00:30:53] where those first few chapters

[00:30:55] is kind of like,

[00:30:55] well, where do you go from here?

[00:30:57] Like, is it gonna keep being the same thing,

[00:31:00] the same monster, the weak thing?

[00:31:01] I think that it could have gotten some kind of plot going.

[00:31:04] I feel like it was heading somewhere

[00:31:06] until Tajima showed up to invite them

[00:31:09] which in retrospect kind of feels

[00:31:11] sudden and out of place

[00:31:12] when Tajima, like they just defeated him

[00:31:14] and then he just shows up at their door

[00:31:16] like the next chapter

[00:31:17] and he's like,

[00:31:17] oh, I'm better now.

[00:31:18] Thank you.

[00:31:19] Here you go.

[00:31:19] I'm feeling so much better.

[00:31:21] You actually allowed me to get some rest.

[00:31:22] Now I'm going to invite you

[00:31:24] to the King of Games tournament.

[00:31:26] There was no

[00:31:28] like foreshadowing to that.

[00:31:29] It kind of just happened.

[00:31:30] No buildup.

[00:31:31] Like if maybe they dropped a couple lines

[00:31:33] beforehand that Nostano Skate

[00:31:34] wanted to win that tournament

[00:31:36] or something along those lines

[00:31:37] and they build up was slower.

[00:31:39] We'll get into that

[00:31:40] and to where it could have gone.

[00:31:41] But like, you know that a series

[00:31:43] has an issue when you can pinpoint the exact moment

[00:31:46] when the editorial mandate took effect.

[00:31:49] Yeah, and you can tell that he knew

[00:31:51] at least a couple issues ahead of time

[00:31:53] that it was coming

[00:31:54] which is why he dumped the entirety

[00:31:56] of all of these evil complainers show up

[00:31:59] wreck shit

[00:32:00] and then turn the tails and run.

[00:32:02] But I feel like that's almost a sign

[00:32:03] that he didn't know

[00:32:05] because they showed up

[00:32:06] and they were like,

[00:32:06] we'll be back.

[00:32:07] Yeah, they did say they'd be back.

[00:32:09] Maybe he thought he'd have more time to work on it

[00:32:11] after the tournament arc.

[00:32:13] Yeah, maybe it was like,

[00:32:14] all right, after the tournament arc

[00:32:15] we're going to bring these people back.

[00:32:17] But it's hard to say because I can

[00:32:19] I can see a lot of manga doing that

[00:32:21] where after a tournament arc

[00:32:22] where they use that to be their big draw

[00:32:23] show off the power scaling of the universe

[00:32:26] and then they settle back

[00:32:27] into the normal pattern of something.

[00:32:29] I can see that being a bit more common

[00:32:31] but did not happen here.

[00:32:34] No, but you know

[00:32:35] we talked a lot about like its issues with here.

[00:32:37] Let's get into what it did well.

[00:32:39] Honestly during the initial run-up

[00:32:42] during while claim was still a factor

[00:32:45] the complaining customers were spot on

[00:32:47] with people that we have

[00:32:48] that I've encountered in the service industry.

[00:32:50] Yes, they were like sure,

[00:32:52] they were a bit flanderized

[00:32:53] but you kind of have to do that

[00:32:55] in a gag manga.

[00:32:56] These are still types of people

[00:32:58] that you encounter on a day-to-day basis

[00:33:00] working any variety of service job.

[00:33:02] Yeah, you've got

[00:33:03] the people who are always complaining

[00:33:04] about the atmosphere

[00:33:05] about being too cold

[00:33:06] about the temperature.

[00:33:07] You've got the people who want

[00:33:08] to make sure everything is done as fast

[00:33:10] as possible and they will throw a fit

[00:33:12] if you know, you're everything is even slightly late

[00:33:14] or not exactly to their liking.

[00:33:16] You've got the people that will sabotage things

[00:33:18] just to complain even further.

[00:33:19] You've got the assholes that will say,

[00:33:21] oh I want this and this and this and this and this

[00:33:23] that isn't related at all

[00:33:24] to what you're actually supposed

[00:33:26] to be providing for them.

[00:33:27] You see that all the time.

[00:33:29] Yes, I mean at the end of the day

[00:33:30] a lot of this series

[00:33:32] is the author venting

[00:33:34] about just shitty people

[00:33:36] and shitty bosses that he's dealt with

[00:33:38] because tojima

[00:33:39] the author definitely worked for a boss like that.

[00:33:42] Oh, absolutely.

[00:33:44] Like there's even a moment where he's just

[00:33:46] like look at that punchable face.

[00:33:48] Look at that punchable face

[00:33:49] and his bow is all posture no humilid.

[00:33:52] Yeah, and it's just like

[00:33:54] like that's when this manga is at its best.

[00:33:56] I want to say for like the first 11 chapters

[00:33:59] this manga's kind of goal.

[00:34:00] Yeah, the problem is that after that

[00:34:03] he has to start figuring out a way

[00:34:04] to like build up these other service workers

[00:34:07] and the manga stops becoming venting about customers

[00:34:11] and starts being about how cool it is

[00:34:13] to work at like a convenience store and stuff

[00:34:15] which there were moments where I think

[00:34:16] it still worked.

[00:34:17] There were moments where I think

[00:34:18] it was still really funny.

[00:34:20] Like I liked some of these characters.

[00:34:22] When yeah, it's when the

[00:34:23] turnminar characters were going

[00:34:24] into their actual stories.

[00:34:27] Yes, approaching customer service

[00:34:29] from the eyes of a different industry.

[00:34:32] Yeah, that was definitely one of the better things

[00:34:33] it did once it hit that turnminar

[00:34:35] that was one of its saving graces.

[00:34:37] Yeah, but like at the same time

[00:34:38] it's like those moments just became fewer

[00:34:40] and far between whereas in the first 10 chapters or so

[00:34:44] it was so much fun.

[00:34:46] Like they had like the customers

[00:34:47] were like so much more clever to me.

[00:34:50] Oh, so much more so than just the villains.

[00:34:52] Well, in the sense that like

[00:34:53] they had the guy who was really hairy

[00:34:56] and would drop hair in his own food

[00:34:58] and then just be like,

[00:34:59] look at this hair that's in the food.

[00:35:02] What the hell?

[00:35:02] This place has hair all over its food.

[00:35:05] I wish they would have gotten around

[00:35:06] solving him as a customer.

[00:35:08] I imagine we've been something along the lines of waxing him

[00:35:10] which would have been hilarious.

[00:35:12] Oh God, waxing him or like shampooing him or something?

[00:35:17] Oh your hair follicles are inflamed.

[00:35:19] That's why you're shedding hair here.

[00:35:20] Let's give you a full spa day.

[00:35:22] It was often like legitimately funny

[00:35:24] how they'd fight and like improve each other

[00:35:27] in that way. Like when like one of the early things

[00:35:29] is you see corn like punch on a nosque

[00:35:32] in the face and they're like,

[00:35:34] whoa, did he break your glasses

[00:35:35] and actually what he did was polish his glasses?

[00:35:39] So Nassenosuke strikes back by grooming his eyebrows.

[00:35:42] Oh yeah, it was kind of fun when they were doing that.

[00:35:45] They improving each other to provide better service

[00:35:47] and escalating it slowly.

[00:35:49] That was definitely one of the more fun aspects of it.

[00:35:52] Another thing I really enjoyed.

[00:35:54] So I ended up reading some of the metama security

[00:35:56] after we finished this.

[00:35:57] Yeah, the art though now is a huge step up.

[00:36:00] It is cleaner.

[00:36:01] The faces are better.

[00:36:02] Yes, the details are like when they're added

[00:36:05] are actually more helpful.

[00:36:06] They're less muddy.

[00:36:07] Overall huge improvement in art.

[00:36:09] I actually really I enjoyed the art in this one.

[00:36:12] Yeah, no.

[00:36:12] The art in metama security was definitely rough.

[00:36:16] Yeah, you could absolutely tell.

[00:36:17] And the art here while not like amazing.

[00:36:20] No, it wasn't perfect.

[00:36:21] It was like a lot cleaner.

[00:36:23] No, I went from Donda Donda reading this

[00:36:25] and it was like,

[00:36:26] this manga looks bad when you go from Donda

[00:36:29] to two service wars.

[00:36:31] It's not fair.

[00:36:32] Donda, is that the lizard head thing?

[00:36:34] That's Dora Hedora.

[00:36:35] Donda, Donda's like a whole separate thing

[00:36:37] but Dora Hedora's art is also fantastic.

[00:36:39] I've only seen a few panels of that and it is wonderful.

[00:36:42] Dora Hedora is great.

[00:36:43] High recommend.

[00:36:44] But I just can't stop thinking about

[00:36:46] when Nassinozki bowed in the golden ratio

[00:36:50] that might be like my favorite moment.

[00:36:52] The manga there's no need for that as a gag.

[00:36:55] It doesn't really add anything but it's just so good.

[00:36:57] I also appreciate how this manga

[00:37:00] like there's this really intense work culture in Japan.

[00:37:03] I know that.

[00:37:04] There's an intense work culture in America too

[00:37:06] but Japan is famous for it

[00:37:08] where it's just like constantly work hard

[00:37:10] and that's the only way to succeed very little sleep.

[00:37:13] Keep going but this guy's kind of like no,

[00:37:16] just don't destroy yourself.

[00:37:18] Like he has a character who's been essentially

[00:37:21] zombified by heaven and I to work constantly.

[00:37:24] I really like Rengie's description

[00:37:27] where she's talking about her

[00:37:28] and she works at a bagel shop

[00:37:30] and she's like,

[00:37:31] she had fair skin that was like bagels.

[00:37:35] Which is a way to describe someone that's for sure.

[00:37:38] Horrifying.

[00:37:41] I fucking adored the translation.

[00:37:43] Translation was really good.

[00:37:45] Especially some of the puns apparently

[00:37:48] so my favorite one is Rizzly Bear

[00:37:51] where they give a Grizzly Bear a makeover

[00:37:53] and it's just gorgeous.

[00:37:54] Oh that was so good.

[00:37:56] Apparently it's better than the Japanese pun

[00:37:59] which was it was a portmano of the term used

[00:38:03] for a hot guy and bear

[00:38:04] so it was just it's a hot guy bear

[00:38:06] but Rizzly Bear is something else.

[00:38:09] Rizzly Bear is fantastic.

[00:38:12] Overall translation was great.

[00:38:14] A lot of the puns worked really well in translation

[00:38:17] and those some things I think could have

[00:38:18] definitely been translated better like claim.

[00:38:20] They don't actually state what it's an abbreviation for.

[00:38:24] I don't think.

[00:38:25] I think they do but it's just confusing kind of.

[00:38:28] Yeah like they did kind of the um

[00:38:30] the French thing where doctors without borders is MSF.

[00:38:34] They kind of approached from that angle.

[00:38:36] Well it's military or sans frontiers.

[00:38:38] Wait no no no that's the Metal Gear Solid thing

[00:38:43] because it's military.

[00:38:45] That's frontiers whatever.

[00:38:47] Ah where's Maddie when you need her?

[00:38:49] Ah anyway yeah I know from a translation

[00:38:52] it was really fun but yeah let's let's go

[00:38:54] on to where it could have gone.

[00:38:56] So we kind of talked about it a little bit.

[00:38:58] I um about like what it was setting up.

[00:39:00] I feel like where the author was headed here was um

[00:39:04] first of all Q was not going to just suddenly snap into being like

[00:39:08] a good guy member of the crew.

[00:39:10] That is no I feel like if you're gonna have a character like that

[00:39:13] there gonna be a recurring villain

[00:39:16] that slowly improves and becomes less violent over time.

[00:39:19] Yes I feel like that's where he was headed.

[00:39:22] It would have been a lot slower.

[00:39:24] I think Soajima would have died when he got impelled.

[00:39:28] Oh that fucking spike that 100% felt like a red con.

[00:39:33] Oh my god.

[00:39:34] Yeah if it actually had him kill someone

[00:39:36] and then face actual consequences as a result

[00:39:39] it would have been nice.

[00:39:40] It would have been a little nice to say that okay

[00:39:42] maybe he was killing people he was you know

[00:39:44] working his way back though from being a killer

[00:39:46] but then one thing happened and it was maybe someone else

[00:39:50] will take the fall for him or something

[00:39:52] but in the inculcule still blame themselves

[00:39:55] maybe he'll do it him maybe he'll jump off himself

[00:39:57] and say well fuck you and then fall back onto the spikes

[00:40:00] and inculcule blame himself something like that.

[00:40:02] This manga because art was not strong enough

[00:40:05] to have a dramatic shift.

[00:40:07] Yeah the the shift in tone

[00:40:10] the tone shift yeah like Mashel was able to pull it off

[00:40:13] where Mashel was able to turn into like an action manga

[00:40:15] with some seriousness.

[00:40:17] This manga couldn't do it.

[00:40:19] I really don't think he was be able to do that

[00:40:21] which again is a problem when you have QQ

[00:40:24] because QQ feels like he belongs in a completely different manga

[00:40:26] Because all these characters have soft kind of round

[00:40:30] very easily characterized faces even just from an art standpoint

[00:40:32] QQ stands out because QQ has a sharp angular face

[00:40:35] empty dead eyes

[00:40:37] Yeah just does not fit with the world

[00:40:39] it does not fit with the world

[00:40:42] the author cannot pull off super like hardcore dramatic shots

[00:40:47] especially with the the faces

[00:40:50] since they're always using the shock faces in the corner of every panel

[00:40:54] if you have a moment where people are actually supposed to be shocked

[00:40:57] don't fucking do it

[00:40:58] don't do that

[00:40:59] No

[00:41:00] because QQ's backstory is so ridiculous

[00:41:05] like it's again for a gag manga it works

[00:41:07] but it's like you can't they'd have him be a serial killer

[00:41:11] No

[00:41:11] Oh you you you

[00:41:12] No

[00:41:14] QQ should have been a one-off joke

[00:41:16] There you go

[00:41:17] If he was defeated in that initial arc leading up to the tournament

[00:41:22] like if he was kind of someone they had to get by there

[00:41:26] I think that that would have worked

[00:41:27] but to have him be like a main recurring character

[00:41:30] it kind of became a problem

[00:41:32] because again he's killing people

[00:41:35] I'm sorry he's not

[00:41:36] but you know

[00:41:36] but he is

[00:41:37] You can't have someone just blatantly murdering people with by bludgeoning them

[00:41:41] in a gag manga

[00:41:43] where people sum in

[00:41:45] out of the ether a convenience store and gummies

[00:41:49] Oh my god

[00:41:50] it just doesn't fit

[00:41:51] As for claim

[00:41:52] I really think either of the author was planning to do that until he was stopped by the editor

[00:41:57] I think that's actually what was happening

[00:42:00] because they were talking about let's revitalize this whole district

[00:42:03] and that's what the plot was going to be

[00:42:05] because they brought up the bagel store

[00:42:07] and then Nassenoski helped the bagel store

[00:42:09] I think what they were going to try and do

[00:42:11] was they would have another shop show up

[00:42:13] and then maybe one of the claim guys

[00:42:15] would go into that shop

[00:42:16] and try to shut them down

[00:42:17] and Nassenoski would show up

[00:42:19] and they'd worked together

[00:42:20] and it would be like this whole thing

[00:42:22] I am almost certain

[00:42:23] that that's what was going to happen

[00:42:24] That's definitely what it feels like

[00:42:26] when they introduced

[00:42:27] the metal bagel shop initially

[00:42:29] I wish they would have continued that trend

[00:42:32] of being monster of the week

[00:42:34] expand the shopping center

[00:42:35] help the shopping center get back up on its feet

[00:42:37] and then introduce maybe having an iZ evil plot

[00:42:41] kind of in the background

[00:42:42] or more subtly

[00:42:43] instead of just out of nowhere

[00:42:45] having one of the big bad shop

[00:42:47] and say hey

[00:42:48] I'm one of the evil guys here

[00:42:50] you're going to fight in a tournament arc

[00:42:52] It just seems so clear that the tournament arc

[00:42:55] was a product of editorial meddling

[00:42:57] it just doesn't fit

[00:42:59] I do want to see what will happen

[00:43:01] if this mangaka doesn't have an editor

[00:43:03] I'm sure it'll be nuts

[00:43:04] It'll be humorous

[00:43:05] Yeah

[00:43:06] or at least with less editorial meddling

[00:43:08] something along those lines

[00:43:11] I mean use the thing

[00:43:11] I think editors are more important than we realize

[00:43:14] yeah

[00:43:15] At the same time

[00:43:16] it is like

[00:43:17] ShonaJub has to get the fuck off this tournament arc thing

[00:43:20] They have to chill the fuck out

[00:43:22] How many flops have had a tournament arc

[00:43:24] Do you know if they're up your head

[00:43:25] how many recently

[00:43:27] Recently I don't know

[00:43:28] but I know

[00:43:29] it happens all the fucking time

[00:43:32] The Shonen focused manga

[00:43:34] have some tournament arc in it

[00:43:36] and it kills it

[00:43:37] It's either tournament or exam arc

[00:43:39] The most famous one to me is still

[00:43:41] um

[00:43:42] Hunter's Guild Red Hood

[00:43:44] where the author just got so fucking mad about it

[00:43:46] that the rest of the series

[00:43:48] is like borderline

[00:43:49] fourth wall break meta story

[00:43:52] about how the editor can ruin a series

[00:43:56] Did they end up being a tournament arc in um

[00:43:59] The series that the monk good did prior to this

[00:44:02] No I don't think so

[00:44:03] I read I don't think that there's a tournament arc in

[00:44:05] metamaskarity

[00:44:07] There's a great training arc

[00:44:09] where I think I mentioned it before

[00:44:10] It's like oh he's training to be a better

[00:44:12] like a spirit detective essentially

[00:44:15] and then it turns out he was just training

[00:44:16] to be a good basketball player

[00:44:18] They definitely touched on the basketball

[00:44:19] on the first bit of it

[00:44:20] That makes sense

[00:44:21] Basketball is a huge part of metamaskarity

[00:44:25] Since we're going on a bit on the basketball side of things

[00:44:28] How about we move on over to miscellaneous thoughts

[00:44:31] Yes, that's a good idea

[00:44:33] He fucking loves basketball

[00:44:35] Though there was a lot less basketball in this

[00:44:37] than I was expecting

[00:44:39] Especially compared to the other series

[00:44:40] I mean it like a third of metamaskarity is basketball

[00:44:44] Yeah spirit ball is a basketball

[00:44:46] And there was the basketball ghost

[00:44:48] in like the third issue

[00:44:50] or in the third chapter

[00:44:51] Yeah

[00:44:51] I just think he couldn't find a way to put basketball into this

[00:44:54] I think that was maybe he could have added a ring boy

[00:44:56] If the series kept going

[00:44:57] there 100% would have been a basketball player

[00:45:00] or there 100% would have been

[00:45:01] something related to basketball

[00:45:03] I feel like maybe it would have been

[00:45:04] like the world's best water boy

[00:45:06] Yeah or something

[00:45:07] Something like those lines

[00:45:08] where providing service for the players

[00:45:10] Yeah

[00:45:11] Some right of ringside attendant

[00:45:12] But also can do everything involved in the sport too

[00:45:16] For if the player gets tired

[00:45:18] Good service will be taking over in their place

[00:45:20] And that would be a very

[00:45:21] like maybe there an arcade or a gym opens up

[00:45:24] at the shopping center

[00:45:26] Yeah

[00:45:27] That feels like a good place that would have

[00:45:29] that they would have introduced

[00:45:30] That but there was only a handful of references

[00:45:33] to basketball in this one that I could remember

[00:45:35] I only caught the time that they said slam dunk

[00:45:38] There were I think there were a couple

[00:45:39] at least generic sports references

[00:45:40] with the term goal being used

[00:45:41] But yeah it was less so

[00:45:43] I think editorial kind of forced him to ran that in

[00:45:46] Or maybe he just decided

[00:45:48] No

[00:45:48] Maybe he just didn't want to

[00:45:50] I like the implication that if this guy was like

[00:45:53] untethered he would just make everything basketball

[00:45:56] A basketball gag manga could be pretty fun

[00:45:58] There's a part of him that just wants to make

[00:46:00] a basketball manga

[00:46:01] But he doesn't feel like he's got it in him

[00:46:03] I would love to see him

[00:46:04] Just even a one shot

[00:46:05] Just a single chapter

[00:46:06] Of a basket

[00:46:07] Like kind of

[00:46:08] Like kind of like David's

[00:46:09] Lunga

[00:46:10] Yeah the basketball grandma

[00:46:11] Yeah

[00:46:12] You know it's kind of interesting how this guy

[00:46:14] He has flops but there's longer flops

[00:46:17] Yeah

[00:46:17] And I kind of want to read the swan one

[00:46:20] To see if that how that compares

[00:46:22] If that's a gag or not

[00:46:23] Yeah

[00:46:24] Because from what I can tell

[00:46:25] The exhibitionist thing probably a gag manga

[00:46:27] But also could be a thriller

[00:46:28] But I also kind of feel like

[00:46:31] That makes sense for this guy

[00:46:33] Because he's not bad

[00:46:34] He is a talented manga

[00:46:36] It's just like

[00:46:37] He had someone working with him maybe then

[00:46:39] It just hasn't worked for him

[00:46:41] But it's also like people

[00:46:43] Recognize that he's not terrible

[00:46:45] He's not U19

[00:46:46] This is one of the longer series that we've covered

[00:46:49] Metama security I think was over 40 chapters

[00:46:52] So this is not manga they got thrown in their trash

[00:46:56] And it's clear that he's not running out of steam

[00:46:59] It's that something is causing him to have to end things a little early

[00:47:02] Yeah

[00:47:03] I do feel like metama security starts to drag at certain points

[00:47:06] So maybe that is kind of it

[00:47:08] Like I feel like this guy picks ideas

[00:47:10] That kind of don't go for 100 chapters

[00:47:13] There is a limited scope

[00:47:15] I can see metama security having a much broader scope than service wars

[00:47:18] But yeah

[00:47:18] Service wars I could definitely see still being a limited series

[00:47:21] With a finite indie

[00:47:22] A final ending in place planned before even starting

[00:47:26] There is such a difference between writing a shorter series with a definitive ending

[00:47:33] And writing a series that is meant to go on forever essentially

[00:47:36] And shown and jumped demands that you write series that go on forever

[00:47:40] Unless you're a curatorian

[00:47:41] RIP by the way

[00:47:43] This is the first episode we've done since a curatoriama died

[00:47:46] Rest in peace

[00:47:47] Absolute king

[00:47:48] I was devastated

[00:47:49] Me and my girlfriend were crying

[00:47:51] Oh my god

[00:47:53] I'm bullying the rest of anime to cortex to doing an original dragon ball

[00:47:57] Episode as soon as possible

[00:47:58] Because we need to do that man

[00:48:01] I do want to get into maxi b's thoughts here

[00:48:03] They said that this is hot to moones

[00:48:05] First series without editor jenichi tamata

[00:48:08] Who've been working alongside him since his first submission

[00:48:10] The akatsuka awards in 2011 but had to move on

[00:48:14] Entering trans-partituation's dash books division

[00:48:17] That might explain a lot

[00:48:18] Because that means that he was working with a different editor this time

[00:48:22] Which this definitely would have been probably one of uh jumps in house guys

[00:48:27] And yeah

[00:48:28] That makes a lot of sense

[00:48:29] Why this spelt a lot more like your standard shown in affair after a certain point

[00:48:33] Which is unfortunate

[00:48:35] Ah it's shame

[00:48:36] Yeah it sounds like the other editor probably got him more

[00:48:39] Which is why they had they seem to have had just based on that sentence

[00:48:42] Like a working relationship

[00:48:44] Hmm

[00:48:44] It's a damn shame

[00:48:45] One of maxi b's other notes is that uh hot to moones often mistaken for a woman

[00:48:49] Because of his art style as a major part of his study for a naked swan

[00:48:54] Involved reading and learning from copies of basetsu margaret

[00:48:57] I definitely know what that is

[00:48:59] Thank you maxi

[00:49:00] I absolutely know what that means

[00:49:03] Um

[00:49:03] I'm definitely not googling it right now

[00:49:06] One of Tucker's notes that I thought was kind of interesting

[00:49:09] Heaven and die holding links is actually play on words

[00:49:13] Yeah

[00:49:13] parody of seven and die holdings which is the japanese parent company

[00:49:17] That bought out 7-11

[00:49:19] Unlike in the united states

[00:49:20] In japan the holding companies branding is everywhere

[00:49:22] And they have a very particularly catchy jingle

[00:49:26] That's everywhere as well

[00:49:29] Which is interesting

[00:49:30] I wish that's kind of how it was in america

[00:49:33] Because then you would notice

[00:49:34] How few holding companies own a billion things

[00:49:38] Oh what do you mean everything's owned by written met romney what

[00:49:41] Hahaha

[00:49:42] Wait really

[00:49:43] Bane capital

[00:49:43] Yeah

[00:49:44] Oh my god

[00:49:45] I didn't realize he was being capital

[00:49:46] Anyway enough about politics

[00:49:49] Yeah

[00:49:49] Let's get into final verdict

[00:49:52] And six word summaries

[00:50:44] They gave Gordon Ramsay among

[00:50:45] Oh man

[00:50:47] I think Gordon Ramsay was actually the gormande in metam

[00:50:54] Or have him just sit down and have some of the foods from food wars made for him

[00:50:58] That would be interesting

[00:50:59] That'd be interesting

[00:51:00] Like he's a judge, yeah

[00:51:02] Oh yeah

[00:51:02] Quack

[00:51:03] My eggplant eyes the wasted potential

[00:51:05] Redblade by showing in battle to please people's problems

[00:51:08] Do drugs the earth child stand

[00:51:09] Karen's destroyed by great customer service

[00:51:12] The wolf the wood the trafalker

[00:51:13] Better food wars but less horny

[00:51:15] I don't know

[00:51:16] I really like food wars a lot actually

[00:51:20] I don't

[00:51:20] Yeah

[00:51:21] Food wars actually inspires me to cook

[00:51:23] Meanwhile this doesn't inspire me to do customer service

[00:51:25] Which is fine

[00:51:26] Yeah

[00:51:27] I feel like this is not met

[00:51:28] Well I don't know I feel like maybe this I don't know

[00:51:31] From David

[00:51:32] Oh hey I can submit one

[00:51:33] Thank you David

[00:51:35] Much appreciated contribution buddy

[00:51:37] Sandman DF

[00:51:38] This is my six word summary

[00:51:40] Thank you Sandman DF

[00:51:42] Time for David on that one

[00:51:43] Grape otter king of questions

[00:51:44] Genius host detains true egg plant deification

[00:51:47] Thor's aka Daniel

[00:51:49] Rizli bear

[00:51:50] 10 out of 10

[00:51:51] Yep

[00:51:51] Pretty great

[00:51:53] Carbon

[00:51:53] Strongest customer service employee of today

[00:51:56] Watchtower

[00:51:57] Ylad which you could use a like a dragon

[00:51:59] Business management minigame manga edition

[00:52:01] Spook sir Skellington

[00:52:02] No summer this week and fasting

[00:52:04] I think they meant summary

[00:52:06] But it is six words

[00:52:07] So I don't know what they were going for

[00:52:09] From Andy Royd 17

[00:52:10] Don't remember that part of 1984

[00:52:12] That is I believe referencing heaven and eyes

[00:52:15] Banner being everywhere during chapter 9

[00:52:17] Oh okay

[00:52:19] Jordan what's your six word summary

[00:52:21] Oh I remember customers like this

[00:52:24] There are too many of them

[00:52:26] How about you Dylan

[00:52:27] Here it's service or be serviced

[00:52:30] We didn't even talk about the double entendre with that

[00:52:33] There were so many service double entendres

[00:52:36] I was sending them to all of my friends

[00:52:38] I was reading them

[00:52:39] Oh side note I really liked the guy who wanted to win the

[00:52:42] King of Service award

[00:52:44] So he could satisfy a dream of swimming

[00:52:46] Through a giant pool of curry

[00:52:48] That just sounds so messy

[00:52:49] I was thinking about those like

[00:52:51] What kind of career like a more liquidy

[00:52:52] Like tykery or Japanese curry

[00:52:55] Or like a thicker Indian curry

[00:52:57] I don't know the dealer's choice

[00:52:59] You know

[00:53:00] Scrooge McDuckett just dive on in

[00:53:02] Hell yeah

[00:53:02] Dylan flop or not

[00:53:04] No I don't think it was a flop

[00:53:05] How about you Jordan

[00:53:06] I think it was a flop unfortunately

[00:53:08] I think that if it had stuck to the first 10 chapters

[00:53:12] Wouldn't have been

[00:53:13] But I just think that the

[00:53:15] Remaining chapters were just not very strong

[00:53:17] I still like this series

[00:53:19] I don't think it's terrible

[00:53:20] But I just feel like that

[00:53:21] That drop off in quality just kind of really heard it

[00:53:24] It just started to drag

[00:53:26] And it's a shame

[00:53:28] I do feel you there

[00:53:29] I think I probably would have continued

[00:53:31] To read it though

[00:53:32] Which is where I would

[00:53:33] That's where I would have the

[00:53:35] The line between flop or not

[00:53:36] Flop is if

[00:53:37] This here

[00:53:38] I just feel

[00:53:38] I don't have the energy to continue

[00:53:40] But this

[00:53:40] If Service Warrior ever comes around

[00:53:42] I'll give it a few chapters

[00:53:44] Oh I will too

[00:53:45] Again I didn't dislike this series

[00:53:47] I liked it

[00:53:48] I just feel like

[00:53:48] Don't think it had that a

[00:53:50] Staying power that

[00:53:51] Genesec was

[00:53:53] That like a lot of non-flops have

[00:53:55] I can definitely see that

[00:53:57] So what would you recommend in place of this

[00:54:00] If someone wanted something that wasn't a flop

[00:54:02] The Bear is a great series

[00:54:04] About running a restaurant

[00:54:06] It's stressful as hell

[00:54:08] But it's just a fantastic show

[00:54:10] Hell yeah

[00:54:11] Yeah I do need to just to get around to watching that

[00:54:13] It's on my list after X-Men 97

[00:54:16] I really want to watch X-Men 97

[00:54:18] But I watched it yet

[00:54:19] Oh my god I was just watching the trailers

[00:54:22] And getting goosebumps from all the nostalgia

[00:54:24] Holy shit

[00:54:26] They used the original theme in the trailer

[00:54:27] I hope they use it in the show

[00:54:29] The...

[00:54:29] Dada da da da

[00:54:30] Dada dum

[00:54:31] Not just

[00:54:31] Oh shivers

[00:54:33] No I watched the intro from 97

[00:54:36] Don't worry

[00:54:36] Don't worry they keep it

[00:54:38] Oh hell yeah

[00:54:39] Yeah

[00:54:40] So yeah the Bear and apparently X-Men 97

[00:54:42] Yeah there we go

[00:54:44] There you go

[00:54:45] Well

[00:54:46] Dylan based on what you've heard from editing

[00:54:48] Do you think this is the best or worst series we've talked about?

[00:54:51] No I don't

[00:54:52] I think this falls in the positive end of mid

[00:54:55] In the grand scheme of things

[00:54:57] I agree

[00:54:59] I easily do not think this is the worst

[00:55:01] Far far from the worst

[00:55:03] It is closer to some of the best series that we've read

[00:55:05] But that's mostly because we 90% of the time just read absolute trash

[00:55:09] And this was like decent

[00:55:11] But do you think this is better or worse than Chain Saw Man

[00:55:14] Since he said it wasn't a movie

[00:55:15] No where near is good as Chain Saw Man

[00:55:17] Okay

[00:55:18] No where near is good

[00:55:19] Ah

[00:55:20] Fuck that here with that

[00:55:22] FOOOW

[00:55:24] Anyway

[00:55:25] Ah let's get into the wrap up now

[00:55:27] Ah thank you so much for joining me today Dylan

[00:55:29] Oh it's always a pleasure to be here

[00:55:32] Thank you so much Jordan

[00:55:33] For making the opening and being

[00:55:35] Stasdika wasn't helping with our editing throughout this

[00:55:37] Oh thank you so much

[00:55:39] Of course

[00:57:29] That's moving on to the $10 Raviyoli tier where you can get pictures of David's wonderful

[00:57:34] dog.

[00:57:35] Raviyoli?

[00:57:36] We got Chris Zina Fantos, Eva, Lady T, Matti, and Trevor Shector.

[00:57:42] Thanks for coming to our $8 King of the Forest members.

[00:57:44] We got 090Z.

[00:57:45] Chad Mason is Dylan secretly Blitz PhD on TikTok.

[00:57:50] Sean check on it.

[00:57:51] Dylan, what do you think about that?

[00:57:52] I've heard that patron name in the previous episode of Anime Intercontext and I looked

[00:57:57] them up.

[00:57:58] We look nothing alike.

[00:57:59] And we don't sound anything like one another.

[00:58:00] We are just white guys who wear glasses and have long dark hair.

[00:58:04] I like the idea that you would have to look him up to determine whether or not he was

[00:58:07] you.

[00:58:08] I mean, sometimes hey, I don't know what I get up to.

[00:58:11] Jacob Andrew Galloway, Justin Heffner, Kirby Mondoscalus, Marty Max Baker, Riley, 3.14,

[00:58:19] Sarah Hyder, The Wolf the Wood and the Trafalgar, and Tommy Boy.

[00:58:30] I love all of you so much.

[00:58:33] And Jordan, is there anything else you want to talk about before we sign off?

[00:58:36] Check out Mission Ignition.

[00:58:38] My podcasts were I covered fucking van piers.

[00:58:42] Hell yeah.

[00:58:43] You should watch van piers still in just to see what we're talking about.

[00:58:47] You know where it's available?

[00:58:48] I tried looking it up earlier and couldn't find anything.

[00:58:50] YouTube.

[00:58:51] It just YouTube.

[00:58:52] Okay, cool.

[00:58:53] Yeah, that's where we get it.

[00:59:26] Yeah!

[00:59:27] Yeah!

[00:59:28] Ha!
